Title: The Five Great Third Albums of Alltime
Post by: kosmo vinyl on September 28, 2004, 11:53:00 am
stealing ggw's thunder but, some bands shoot their wad on the first record never to recover, some build upon the early records  with mature plus experience and create their best work.

 U2 - War
 XTC - Drums and Wires
The Jam - All Mod Cons
 Devo - Freedom of Choice
White Stripes - White Blood Cells

and of course The Clash - London Calling

Most bands have done their best work in their first two albums, right?

Two exceptions: Old 97's and Slobberbone.

if you include their self-released album as their first, it'll be their third.  they're planning to re-release it on cd in the near future.  when it comes out, would you consider that to be their third instead?  it was recorded/originally released before.  i consider it to be their first, even though it's currently not widely available for purchase.  (i have two copies on vinyl, though (limited to 300))

Rome never looks where she treads.
 Always her heavy hooves fall
 On our stomachs, our hearts or our heads;
And Rome never heeds when we bawl.
Her sentries pass on - that is all,
And we gather behind them in hordes,
And plot to reconquer the Wall,
With only our tongues for our swords.

We are the Little Folk - we!
Too little to love or to hate.
Leave us alone and you'll see
How we can drag down the State!
We are the worm in the wood!
We are the rot at the root!
We are the taint in the blood!
We are the thorn in the foot!

 Mistletoe killing an oak -
Rats gnawing cables in two -
Moths making holes in a cloak -
How they must love what they do!
Yes - and we Little Folk too,
We are busy as they -
Working our works out of view -
Watch, and you'll see it some day!

No indeed! We are not strong,
But we know Peoples that are.
Yes, and we'll guide them along
To smash and destroy you in War!
We shall be slaves just the same?
Yes, we have always been slaves,
But you - you will die of the shame,
And then we shall dance on your graves!

We are the Little Folk, we, etc.

We are the worm in the wood!
We are the rot at the root!
We are the taint in the blood!
We are the thorn in the foot!

1) The Smiths -- The Queen is Dead
 2) Iggy and the Stooges -- Raw Power
 3) Queens of the Stone Age -- Songs for the Deaf
 4) Heatmiser -- MIC City Sons
 5) The Charlatans UK -- Up To Our Hips

I am tempted to list Zen Arcade by Husker Du...was Everything Falls Apart really an LP? I guess it was. Anyway, Zen Arcade still feels like Husker Du's first proper LP to me (Land Speed Record I suppose is, but generally speaking I rarely count live albums in a band's LP-making career).
