The gauntlet has been thrown down!
originally posted by Rhett Miller
Earlier this year, I compiled a list of my 40 favorite albums from 1/2002-9/2005. I'll bet you can't name ten of the albums on this list, and I'll give you all day and as many guesses as you wish.
-
Somehow.....'GGW' and 'Fun' just don't go together
-
The challege was to Jaron, not the collective board. I don't think it would be that difficult for the board collectively to come up with such a list. But have at it, if you wish.
-
Nellie McKay - "I'm Liza Minelli Reincarnated"
Norah Jones - "Smooth Jazz for Aging Hipsters"
Old 97's - "Drag It Up"
-
Well, I do remember earlier this year you posted a link to a post you made on the Old 97's board, and I believe clicking on your "last posts of this member" section rendered a result of you proclaiming, if I remember correctly, that Drag It Up was "maybe the best record of the decade".
I'll try and come up with your list after lunch. I always enjoy a game.

ego?? i honestly enjoy seeing what people put on their top albums of the year list ... it helps me pick up a bunch of discs that i wouldn't have otherwise found, what's so egotistic about starting that thread?
-
I do too, when individuals limit their lists to 10 albums for one year. If they list 70 albums or whatever, it becomes more of an exhaustive list rather than a "best of" list.

I wasn't on here 3 years ago, so I have little idea what you raved about 3 years ago, but here's some stuff I can imagine on your list:
Norah Jones - Come Away With Me
Flogging Molly - Drunken Lullabies
Jesse Sykes - On My Own
Jesse Sykes - Reckless Burning
Robbie Fulks - Georgia Hard
Bobby Bare Jr. - End Of Your Leash
Jolie Holland - Escondida
Drive By Truckers - Dirty South
Drive By Truckers - Gangstabilly
Old 97s - Drag It Up
Nellie McKay - Get Away FRom Me
Lucinda Williams - World Without Tears
BR549 - Tangled In The Pines
Stars - Set Yourself On Fire
Ted Leo - Shake The Sheets
-
Oh, and Interpol's last two records, nothing screams "Charlie's musical tastes" more then "Interpol."
-
Now admit it, you went back and looked at my list on the Best of 2004, right?

Of course I did, but to be honest, I only picked up Jolie Holland - Escondida that I didn't have before.
Also, I remember you liking the Devotchka's first record.
-
I'm not making rules...just saying...
Best of lists are about singling out your very favorite albums of the year. If you're going to come up with a list of 78 for ONE YEAR, you're not really making a best of list, are you? You're just making a big long list to post to impress people. At least that's my take on it. No offense intended really, wouldn't have even brought it up if you hadn't first commented on my ego.

Well it just soothes my ego to know that people are paying attention to my blather. ;)
Actually, it's Devotcka (not the Devotcka's...different band), and it's their third and most recent album...but good recall. I will hereby refer to you as "ggw jr". I'm sure y'all will be equally pleased.

Yeah, I knew that. The "the" in the sentence was directed at "first record" although I garbled it.
Brendan Benson, you like him as well.
