sorry to break up this playlist bonanza, but i was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on must-see things in philly
we're going up from thurs-sat, have reservations at matyson on thurs night, going to the phillies/cubs game on fri, planning on seeing the king tut exhibit at some point and doing some of the philly tourist stuff that i've never done ... any bars or nightlife that we shouldn't miss? we'll be staying in the historic district, but can cab it anywhere i assume
gracias!

South Street is always fun for wasting an afternoon.
-
Philly makes Baltimore look exciting.

Yes, there's a great falafal place on South Street...part of a European chain, I think the Philly place was the only one in America at he time we went...we also went to one in Barcelona on our honeymoon. Anybody know the place I'm talking about?

i saw the Tut exhibit a few weeks ago. pretty neat stuff, though, a couple of the people i went with have seen the exhibit before and were unimpressed with this particular collection.
make sure you drop the extra $7 for the headphones!

though i'm sure you've checked already
Cornelius is playing the fillmore (TLA) on friday night, perhaps a late show.
Clutch at the Troc on saturday, yowsah!

The best Falafel I had in Philly was at a street cart called Cristo's, but the line is ridiculously long. 20th and Market.

Maybe a couple hrs to walk South St, not a whole afternoon unless you get in the slowwww line for a cheesesteak @ Pat's
Main St Manayunk is another colorful semi-bohemian strolling area; I'd rather hang there than filthy South St any day
Walnut St isn't very bohemian, but that's where I notice the most hot chix

I've been to this place, a stone's throw from the Khyber...good call.

I love Monk's cafe. Awesome beer selection, good food, good atmosphere.
Monk's website (http://www.ripsneakers.com/monks/)
If you're into cuban food, check out Mixto. Very yummy.
Mixto website (http://mixtophilly.com/)
There's also the Rodin museum. It's within walking distance of the Philadelphia Museum. It's a nice little museum.
Also, the Mutter Museum. I still haven't been there, but have been meaning to go for quite sometime.

I should add that Monk's has about 300 beers or so in bottles. They don't mention that on their website, that I could see.

Smackette lived in Philly for four years and would agree. We've never had a trip back to Philly that didn't include a stop at Monks. Great place.
-
I went last weekend.
Right now the Mutter is featuring a Ben Franklin themed exhibit, along with their regular oddities area.
If you want to drop lots of money, you can go to Iron Chef Morimoto's place. Called Morimoto. It is on Chestnut.
Sushi and other goodies.
Amada, also on Chestnut for Tapas. (again expensive)
There is a place called Fork right on Market between 4th and 5th that is good for Brunch.
I do not think Philly is boring at all.
They have better record shopping than DC.

^^listen to this girl^^
monk's was one of my favorite spots. and there's nothing better than good cuban food.
not sure if it's still around (or if you're into jazz clubs at all), but Ortlieb's (4th & poplar? somewhere in northern liberties area) is another great spot.
-
Definitely go to the Mutter Museum.
-
You can get just as good of a Cheesesteak elsewhere, so waiting in line at Pat's is kind of overrated.
-
Support local music stores and head to Space Boy Records.
I like to visit Manayunk too when I'm there.
-
Just noticed on the WXPN website (I check to see what the free mp3 is ever day)
Free at Noon
Tim Finn Tim Finn
See Tim Finn Friday at XPN's Free At Noon Concert. Hosted by Helen Leicht - May 11 at 12noon ET from World Cafe Live. RSVP NOW to see Tim Finn.
-
You guys are thinking of Jim's on South Street - Pat's is in South Philly at 9th and Passyunk. Jim's is actually a really good cheesteak, I'd wait in line for that as opposed to going to Pat's or Geno's. But if you have a car and want the best cheesesteak, head up to Roxborough and go to Dallesandro's on Henry Ave.

Probably... whatever the one is that's black&white bathroom-tiled if I remember correctly
-
the mutter museum is awesome and creepy and excellent and awesome again.
jim's steaks is the place to go.
around the corner is (i hope it's still there) the philadelphia record exchange. staffed largely of The Strapping Fieldhands if anyone remembers them.
There's a short run of good clubs on 2nd st. the khyber is still there. upstairs at nicks is something else now...
-
thanks for all the tips ... monks and eulogy bar were great, awesome beer everywhere we went in the city actually, not sure if we just got lucky
-
I'm glad you went to Monks! It's one of my favorite bars in the US.
-
I'm going to be there this weekend. If anyone knows of good record stores that sell vinyl hook me up with the names.
If one of the record stores have any albums by The Fall I'll buy the person who recommended the place an ice cream cone.

there's a really neat club called The Fire; the stage is like...four feet wide. tiny. it is wonderful.

There are a couple of cool ones off of South Street. There's the Philadelphia Record Exchange at 618 S. 5th St. Cue Records at 617 S 4th St. and my favorite, Noise Pollution at 619 S 4th St. I used to buy Oasis and Suede 12" singles there.
If you're into dance/techno. 611 records is great. It's at 611(natch) S 4th St. You see Josh Wink in there a lot. Or at least, you used to. I haven't been there in a while.

Three to choose from (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/12198/independent_record_stores_in_philadelphia.html)
-
For records, I really like Cue (on 4th Street off South) -- downtempo and midtempo breaks-y stuff, defiantly labeled with the old-school "trip-hop"; hip-hop; and soul/R&B stuff.
I thought 611 had closed and was going to re-open some new store or something; I could be wrong.
If you're looking for albums by the Fall, I'd try Spaceboy. Last I was there, it was above Zipperhead on South Street proper.
-
Spaceboy closed last year.

Parts of south Philly feel like a Mafia gun battle could erupt any minute...
