Sounds about right.

Come on! It's forced charitable giving. Got a problem with that?
The Police announce plans for reunion tour
The Associated Press
Monday, February 12, 2007
WEST HOLLYWOOD, California
The rock trio The Police announced their first tour in decades Monday at a rehearsal at the Whisky a Go-Go as a throng of fans crowded near the legendary Sunset Strip nightclub.
The group, which led off Sunday night's Grammy Awards with a live performance, broke up in 1984. Members Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland have since pursued individual careers.
The packed club got a taste of Police hits, "Roxanne" and "Message in a Bottle," and listened to the members talk about the decision to reunite and joke about the conflicts that led to their split.
"I woke up one morning about three months ago â?? it's like a light bulb went off in my head ... I'm going to call Andy and Stewart," Sting said. "What's happening is sort of very healing."
His bandmates kidded about Sting's demanding personality.
"We refer to Sting as our dear leader," Copeland said.
"On a good day," Summers added.
They insisted the disputes were artistic, not personal.
"The nature of the arguments were all about music .... also hairstyles," Sting joked.
The Police plan a world tour of arenas, stadiums and some festivals beginning in North America on May 28 in Vancouver, moving to Europe in September and October, then returning across the Atlantic.
Some confirmed cities include New York, Boston, Seattle, Denver, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Dallas, New Orleans, St. Louis, Toronto and Montreal. The group will headline the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Tennessee.
"It's going to be three guys on stage, that's all," Sting said. "The show is going to look simple but spectacular."
The group plans to stick to Police material and not include Sting's solo hits.
They sidestepped questions about whether there would be a longer-term relationship including recording new music.
Tickets for the North American leg will range from $50 to $225 (â?¬38 to â?¬173). A portion of proceeds will go to WaterAid, an anti-poverty organization that seeks to provide poor people access to safe water.
-
There went my interest in the tour!
-
Doesn't seem too crazy to me.
-
Just go to Bonnaroo, then. Tickets will be cheaper, plus you get three days of music.
-
Wait - it gets better:
In the United States, members of Best Buy's Reward Zone program will have the opportunity to access tickets prior to the general public. To qualify for the presale, participants need to be 18 years old or older and must have a current Reward Zone program membership that was activated by February 1, 2007. Presale tickets will be sold through Ticketmaster on a first come first served bases. Complete details of the Reward Zone program presale can be found at www.bestbuy.com/thepolice. i remember back when â?¬38 was $34 and we all walked to school uphill in the snow ... those were the days ...
-
so... i guess they're getting back together for the love of mu$ic.
-
I'm hoping I can cash in my rewardzone points to get an upgraded ticket.
-
I don't know how those prices are surprising. Same for The Who, way more for Madonna or Simon & Garfunkel...
-
i agree. go to bonnaroo and see a bunch of other shows.
3 and a half days of music for $150 isn't too bad, unless the rest of the lineup blows.
-
No way.
I'm buying the $90 tickets and you won't hear a complaint out of me. I've been asking for this tour for nearly two decades. I want a full set of Police songs, no less!
-
Yeah, maybe not surprising, Bags, but there's also a reason I wouldn't both with the Who, Simon & Garfunkel or Madonna live!
-
Keep in mind - headlining sets at Bonnaroo are full sets. Tom Petty, Radiohead and Phil Lesh all played over two hours last year.
With the rumors of the other nights...I'm banking on Bonnaroo.
-
Did they have hidden backup singers when they played on the Grammys? I heard at least two voices doing backup at one point when I could see the drummer dude definitely was not singing
-
Well, nkotb, I will say that I scored floor tix to the Who for $100. And I overpaid for S&G and Madonna, no question. I'd never seen either of them, though. I won't see Madonna again; felt I needed to do it once.
I am usually not in to arena shows, but what's fun for me is that it tends to be a bit broader group going than my normal 'indie' concert crew.
Okay, Bonnarroo is in Tennessee. There's a cost associated with going, no?
Austin is my festival travel for the year. Maybe Chicago for Pitchfork or Lolla.
-
police = yawn! zzz

details about the BestBuy presale below... note the dates that I've highlighted - we now know when to expect more dates. does anyone else think that the Washington DC date, now described as "Washington/Baltimore area", might be VFest?!?

also, for those who aren't part of this bestbuy reward zone thing - from ticketmaster.com:
Beginning February 13 at Noon, you can purchase tickets before the general public by ordering The Police Tour Fan Club Membership during the presale as part of your ticket purchase transaction, which will cost another $100 USD ($120 CDN).
In approximately 10 business days, The Police Tour Fan Club will send you an email so that you can then activate your membership.
-
Or you can join the fan club (https://signup.thepolicetour.com/) for $100 to access the presale. Are you kidding me?
I think there were some pre-recorded backing tracks during their performance last night. And obviously Sting can't maintain the high octaves anymore.
-

Okay, this fan club thing. A friend just explained how the Stones do it -- " you know, what i'm not clear about is whether you can buy the membership when you buy the tickets. in other words, you don't have to pre-buy the membership, you can wait till the onsale time and see what tickets come up. they just would tack on $100 to the whole price of the tickets. that's what the stones have done."
Okay, if that's the deal, that is the downright shittiest thing I have ever heard. That is NOT about the fan club, that is about charging $100 for early access. YUCK.
I am appalled, and those of you on here who kinda know me know that I'm willing to throw money at shit to make it work or easy, but that is just NASTY.
Forget it. If I miss 'em I miss 'em, even though they were my very very favorite band from 14 to 24. Even more than the Smiths in college, or Foo Fighters now. Still, I cannot condone that shit.
>rant over<
-
Yeah - that's how the Stones did it too. But I think that's the normal cost for a Stones fan club membership anyway - tour or not.
My guess is you can still get decent seats for $90. Yeah - The best Who tix are about $200, but you could get good 100-level seats for $100.
When tickets go on sale, just immediately go for the $90 seats - not "Best available". They probably won't be too bad.
-
That is the deal. You can fork over the additional $100 at the time of purchase if you so choose.
-
From the J. Freedom Grammy chat...
"Could happen if they play a large enough venue. FedEx Field, for instance. Or, I don't know -- something a little bit more unconventional, like Pimlico. If they do smaller venues, though -- Nissan or Merriweather, for example -- then forget it because, you're right, the scalpers are going to wind up asking for the title to your car."
V-Fest anyone?
-
V-Fest anyone?
Thank god I'm going to Madison Square Garden. I wouldn't want V-fest to be my only show.
-
heh, i beat you to the VFest guess :)
i like the police, but i'm not willing to pay $100+ for a mediocre seat. having them at vfest will be a good middle ground for me - pay about the same amount for the police but also get 2 dozen other bands and DJs.
-
I've been hearing bigger rumors about V-Fest that will blow the Police out of the water.
-
I'm in. Not overjoyed about $225, but it's the Police. Sometimes there is a scientific phrase which applies to this situation:
Fuck it.
P.S. 703, do tell. Don't hog the unconfirmed truths to yourself.
-
callat: start spilling them beans about VFest rumours, or i'll make your gig tomorrow night... unpleasant
seriously though, would love to hear. festival rumours are, in my opinion, a billion times more interesting than hollywood gossip (but unfortunately just as reliable).
-
i'm not one to spread rumors, so I'll remain vague for now. but if what I've heard is true, the early '90s could be well represented.
-
but if what I've heard is true, the early '90s could be well represented.
Pumpkins or Rage?
-
There went my interest in the tour!
Ditto.
-
Worst possible scenario:
The DC/Baltimore stop is at the Al Gore Global Warming benefit on July 7 and we get The Police along with sets by Don Henley, Aerosmith, Black Eyed Peas, etc...
-
Can someone please just answer the question of whether or not these ticket prices are a joke or not? Because if they are, if the Police are joking, its not funny. I just don't find any humor in it whatsoever. If they are not a joke, then these ticket prices are very, very high and I won't be able to attend.
-
i _MIGHT_ sit through 1-1.5 hours of the police if someone is willing to pay me $225. is that the going rate? it would still be torment, but i think i could stick it out for ~$100/hour in compensation.
-
For the love of crap can we just get The Police at Verizon Center and be done with it??
-
Verizon Center date does not look likely if they won't announce the details; its one of the only dates on the tour in which they will not announce additional information.
If you want to see them at a real venue, you might want to head up to MSG; they'll play at least 4 shows there.
-
Can someone please just answer the question of whether or not these ticket prices are a joke or not?
no, it's not a joke; yes, those are the real prices. go to ticketbastard.com and search for "the police". select any date and look at the "price" pull-down menu. any time old dinosaurs like the police, the eagles, the who, the stones, etc decide to roam the earth, they charges such ridiculous prices. so while i really wouldn't mind seeing them, i'm not a big enough fan to pay those prices. $100+fees for 2 nose-bleed uppers? $500 to take the lady out one night? no thanks.
-
I saw them at Painters Mill in '80. One of my alltime faves. I don't think I'll spoil that memory for this tour. Anybody else see that show? They're some talented musicians, no doubt about it. Anybody remember Clark Kent?
-
The ticket prices are no joke! The teenagers who grew up listening to The Police in the late 70's/early 80's are now in their mid 40's and prime money making days, and will have no problem or qualms paying these prices.
The very first time I got stoned was in 1979 while listening to Reggatta de Blanc instead of studying at a friends house! I'll happily pay the $100 plus ticket price just to relive that day alone! (actually I recently joined the Sting fan club for $65 in anticipation of this crap, so I am now automatically a member of the Police club for $65 instead of $100!)
The fan club has said it will be holding a serious amount of tickets for its members, so if you are serious about seeing any of these shows I strongly recommend paying the $100 and buying through the fan club as I don't think you'll have much chance with the public sales and the rest of the world. Just my two cents.
PS: Tickets are already listed on stubhub for $14,000+!
-
This is the way that all artist are doing business now. Buy my membership and get great tickets.
-
yeah but not all fanclubs charge you $100 for the honor of getting tickets and a lithograph of the band. Pearl Jam's Ten Club for $20 a year gets one a Christmas 45, newsletters and other cool publications printed on good quality stock.
-
Kosmo is right; the ticket prices can be justified, the membership cannot. This kind of stuff is simply out of control, unnecessary, and a slap in the face to anybody who has supported this band in the past.
Any person that says they are reuniting for the love of music and pulls stuff like that is lying.
-
I would assume $225 is for seats right up front (which if they were regularly priced the average person would never obtain anyways) and I'm sure the $90 seats will be fine and for a band that hasn't toured in over 20 years I have no problem with that. As far as the fanclub goes, why bitch about it? Use a bestbuy rewardzone number (from a friend if you don't already have one) which will allow you to get tickets a day before even the fan club allows you to. Goddamn what a cry fest on here
-
it's capitalism... i guess i don't have a problem with that. you get what you can.
but, it does make me respect other bands - who could easily cash in by reforming - even more.
Pink Floyd comes to mind... how much could they make off a world tour right now?
but they opt to regroup with Waters for Live 8 and hint at future performances for charity... that's class.
-
Anybody remember Clark Kent?
I remember him so well that I know it's Klark Kent, with two "K"s. LOVE that album.
I can't figure out what to do. The scenario that the goddamn Al Gore concert is our city's date is really really pissing me off. Lovely, 100,000 people on the frickin' mall.
So, I'm definitely planning on Madison Square Garden, but this presale stuff is STILL driving me crazy!
Anyone got a Block Buster Rewards number they're not using? Give you $50 for the use of it.... I'd rather money go to a human I have some degree of separation from than a conglomerate.
-
I seriously doubt the only area Police performance will be Al Gore's thing, that has only been rumored as taking place. Seeing as they probably wont be making any money at such a gig.
-
I'm a little surprised how many of you on here don't have Best Buy Rewardzone numbers. It's free and you get free stuff when you buy things, like, I don't know, music, stereos, MP3 Players, TVs, DVDs, video games and computer equipment. Seems like this lot would be the target demographic.
-
Bags quote:

You're right Bags. I had a friend give me a copy on an old certron cassette. Needless to say, I wore it out but never replaced it. Shame on me.

No urban hipster in his or her right mind would be caught dead in a Best Buy.

I had Klark Kent on a 7 inch, but it was 33 rpms, so it was kinda like a full album (8 songs).
So good....he did a video wearing a mask. Wonder if it's on YouTube.
Of course it is! Klark Kent singing "Away From Home" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8XfHdcFVGM)

No urban hipster in his or her right mind would be caught dead in a Best Buy.
Considering one's self an urban hipster already puts one in the wrong frame of mind.

I'm a member.....but I don't like the Police
-
maybe i am just not old enough...but i never liked the damn Police.
Sting is obnoxious and i wouldnt pay $20 to see them.
and if i went to Bonnaroo, i'd probably watch some other band instead.
phooey on sting. :)
-
Considering one's self an urban hipster already puts one in the wrong frame of mind.
Me = suburban non-hipster.
-
Sonick, I think 'not being old enough' could well explain a lack of affection for the band (not that a few years added to your age means you'd automatically love them).
In the (very) late 70s and early 80s, Sting was not the Sting of today, and the band really was cutting edge. They got kind of odd and a bit puffed up around Synchronicity, but for four albums they were just a great band, no nonsense, a new sound. I adored them oh so much, and Synchronicity is my least favorite album of theirs.
Solo all of Sting's airs and self-importance really blew out of control. Blech. He's still hot, but what a prig.
As for this insane ticket sale for Madison Square Garden, thanks to Brennser for not liking the Police at all, I got very expensive but great seats in the 100 section right next to the stage.
Meanwhile, a friend of mine today paid for the Fan Club in advance and got tickets in section 425. Yup, nosebleed -- terrible terrible.
What they've done is split up the Fan Club pre-sale in to two parts. You can join the Fan Club in advance, and you were eligible for the pre-sale that started today at noon.
Tomorrow at noon they're allowing the "Fan Club Bundle," when you go in, get tickets, and they add the $100 fan club fee to your ticket purchase price. It's a day later, but at least in that sale you have the option of not taking the seats you get (and not having to 'join' the fan club).
Will be interesting to see what happens tomorrow during the 'bundle' sale...
-
Sorry, but the Police were never cutting edge. Perhaps as cutting edge as Nirvana was.
-
Sorry Rhett but I have to favor Bags' side of this arguement...and that's coming from someone who can't stand the band. Though, as far as 'cutting edge' is concerned, I tend to think of them more as being a dull knife in a set of cutting edge cutlery.
I will admit that when the college stations first got ahold of the song "Roxanne", I did like it for about 4 months. Then something went terribly wrong within my head between my ears and my brain and it's been all over with since then. To this day, Sting's voice grates on my nerves so bad that I avoid it as much as possible. And that's not even taking his personality into consideration.
Back then, the Balt./Wash. area was loaded with great radio, some of which had direct lines to the NYC and UK underground. (I know, hard to believe for you more recent arrivals.) We got the song early on (late 70s) and one of it's trademarks for being cutting edge is that it helped to introduce the Raggae or Ska beat into New Wave and Punk music. Prior to that, at least within the US, any kind of Raggae or Ska was generally limited to other kinds of rock or left to it's own genre. The exception would be some of the Ska and Black & White scene that was coming out of the UK but The Police were about the 1st to make it popular in other parts of the world. I might be wrong but I think The Clash came along (to the US college market) just afterwards. So, in those regards alone, you have to recognize them as being 'cutting edge'. Actually, pretty much all of their earlier works had that sound and they were very much credited and known for this.
About 2 years later, their music seeped into the Mainstream, with many thinking that "Roxanne" was a new song, and by then, it wasn't quite as obvious. As what usually happens, those who thought this was a new song didn't realize the importance of their influence within the New Wave and Punk scenes as many others then took those ideas and used it within their own music. By then, it was a crap shoot as to which band heard whom first as to who actually influenced them since those sorts of sounds became widely popular and you could then hear them everywhere. Back then, The Police were actually included within the Punk genre but eventually became disenfranchised as they became more Mainstream and Punk went more hardcore.
With all of that said, I still can't stand them! I always liked Stewart Copeland though but that has much more to do with him once being a member of Curved Air than anything else. Always loved that band.
-
im a best buy rewards zone member and did get a code for the tix on ticketmaster. but i still couldnt get a damn ticket at MSG. maybe lots of people were using it, or theres very limited tix. dont know. any way, at that price and MSG, dont think ill be seeing the police.
-
i was talking about reggae influences on rock in a separate thread about elton john, but wasn't his "jamaica jerk-off" on 73's "goodbye yellow brick road" fairly widely heard in the states?
-
I had that album. Jamaica Jerk Chicken wasn't a hit. Island Girl was a minor hit.
-
Hoya, Elton John was never New Wave or Punk. Go back and you will notice that I specified within those genres. Eric Clapton did it before Elton but, again, The Police helped to bring it into the newer styles during the late 70s. Believe me, they were very much recognized as such at the time but over the years, it's been pretty much forgotten.
-
makes sense
-
Had three friends trying for Friday New York tickets during the third pre-sale, and none of them got tickes.
Hope this means there's a big allotment left for the general sale, but I'm not optimistic. I think more NY shows will be added...
-
Just got me two tickets for the First Deck of the SF show on June 13. I could have had field seats but smackette hates the field.

The only time I'm going back on that grass is when we win the AL West in your back yard. Again.
-
the police recently gave me a ticket for $50. :(
-
On the Best Buy page where they give out the presale codes, the DC date that was previously "TBD" is now completely gone...
-
I read somewhere that it will be in Baltimore?
-
last i heard, it was supposed to be in baltimore but they couldn't get M&T bank stadium on the desired day - ravens and 'skins are having a skirmish/scrimmage/whatever on the day that worked best for the tour. haven't heard anything since then.
-
I used my Best Buy rewards zone (which I signed up for as an afterthought when I bought some $4.99 DVD or something. I think it USED to cost money to be a member but now it's free) pre-sale password for tickets at Hershey. I think they HAVE to add a DC/Baltmore date but Hershey's only about two hours away.
I actually lucked out and got two $90 tickets in the A section.
Now, before those of you who like the Police become jealous, let me tell you I went to U2's Pop Mart show at the Meadowlands and paid $60 for what HAD to be some of the worst seats in the stadium. And they were the upper tier tickets! Apparently there were $40 tickets SOMEWHERE. So that's a tradeoff, right?
This was before U2 came to their senses and realized that they were the only "important" band left. Which meant that they could charge $150+ to perform lame Oasis-like perfect-copy retreads of what they did twenty years ago.
Only not as good.
