I'm burning a vacation day to be with my Valentine's Sweetie.
-
Not me. Private sector, baby!
Metro was *crazy* uncrowded this morning around 7:45am. I'm usually happy to get standing room near one of the doors. Today, a seat, all to myself. I wish all my commutes were like this.
-
me!!!!!
but not for long because i am going to go downtown to take pictures of the snooooooow
and that is, hands down, one of my favorite simpsons episodes of all time. psht. to be so lucky to have Ralph as your valentine.
-
I'm home. It's just not worth the hassle to me. I'd rather burn the vacation day.
I hate the fact that I'm not allowed to telecommute. I could easily do 90% of my job from home. In fact, I'll probably end up doing some work today anyway.
-
my client's building is opening late, so i got to sleep in an hour and am about to head out the door. scrapping off the car, which was parked outside last night, promises to be fun.
-
hooray 2 hour delay

Count Me In! Work called me to tell me that the office was closed. Now, I got to shovel all the ice and snow that was left behind.

Another school day to make up in June

Another school day to make up in June
Same here. I don't care. I'll take it. Hell, I work summer school anyway. Its nice waking up at 10:00 on a Wednesday.
-
I'm home, and planning to watch as much bad TV as possible. I've already started with "E! True Hollywood Story: Drew Barrymore."
Did you know Drew Barrymore's rise to fame was swift and turbulent? Neato!

on the ramp leading from the george washington parkway on to 495 north, i was going too fast, hit a snow patch, spun 180 and ended up eating the snowbank. all turned out fine, i was rather calm during the whole affaire except for the momentary thought that the snowbank wouldn't stop me and i'd plough through it and end up in the deep ditch. didn't happen. all-wheel drive assured that i could get out of the snowbank, but i then found myself facing the wrong way on 495 with no shoulder to turn myself around in. had to wait for a big break in traffic and pull out in to the middle of the highway.
maybe i should have stayed home.

They haven't plowed my street! Niiiice! I'll be sitting in the spa all morning...heh
-
they only add days on to the end of the year once we've had more than five snow days, sillyhead. this is only number two.
-
i came in 2 hours late
took about half an hour to get to work (10 extra)
and half an hour to get in the parking lot

I've been teaching for eight years now and I still don't know the drill. Don't we get out early if there are NO snow days? And we can miss four days and the schedule stays the same? Actually I don't give a shit. Having a teenager schedule kicks ass. It certainly is one of the better things about the job.
-
Got up at 7:30 to see if the university was closed. After seeing that it was I went back to bed. I just got back up about five minutes ago.
-
My office is closed. We are all supposed to be "working from home" today.
*nudge, nudge. wink, wink...*
-
all my classes are canceled, and wednesdays are my 12-hour hell days, so i'm happy
-
Got in at 9:00 on the dot, will work full day. May leave a bit early -- Mooney Suzuki tonight!
Guy who works for me says he's going to telecommute. Bullshit. It's him, not telecommuting. He doesn't even know how to check his voicemail remotely.
-
No school today :) or tomorrow :D

Don't you mean *nugs, nugs. wink, wink...*

Schools are let out because they don't wanna be sued. I think it is really not bad out there...but i catch the Metro.
-
its pretty bad on the road my office is on
-
I was going to DJ the Mooney Suzuki show tonight but decided not to risk hitting any icy patches on the way home, so next time.

I was born in Fremont. I never heard of snow days until I moved out here.

yeah, the only time we had school cancelled was the day after the '89 earthquake.
-
I drank some cough syrup, took a coupla pain pills and zoned out.
My unemployment claim was denied, BTW.
But I cannot do a job search while the roads are blocked.
I guess I'll catch up on my cable-TV watching. If you are paying for cable and not watching...you are losing money.
I also finished a coupla books that have been constipating my brain for awhile.

Regarding snow days and teaching schedules:
Traditionally, a system will add a few days in to allow for snow; generally 3-5 days. At the end of the year, you either got out early for the days you did not use or make up any extra beyond. Sometimes a planned holiday or other day off might be forfeited in it's place. That's for a normal system.
If there is a stretch of extra bad weather which causes you to use up extra days, they can apply to the State to waive those days. Occasionally, that waiver is granted like when we had that crazy snowstorm in 2003, I think it was.
For a whacked out system like Baltimore City, it can be a whole other story. When I was teaching there, those bastards wouldn't close for anything! In fact, for a few years, they refused to even place any snow days into the calendar. Katrina could have hit and they would insist on opening on time! and then stay open all day. If the parents complained, they would just tell them they had the option of not sending their children to school or come pick them up early. On nasty days, any lateness or absences for the students was never held against their record or even showed up on their report cards; however, the falculty and staff were docked and not even allowed to use sick time if they did not come in.
The dirty little secret was that Baltimore City was hellbent on playing Big Mother towards these kids. City Government would close yet the schools would open with the excuse that they had to feed these kids. Bullshit! It's a flipping school, not their homes! As we all knew, and often said, it would take the death of a student on their way to school on a day like today for them to finally change that policy. In the meantime, I had known a couple teachers and other staff who had died trying to get into work on these days but the damn City couldn't care less about their own employees.
Ironically; and not at all surprisingly; on a day like this, the Superintendent at the time demanded that schools open on time yet he never came into work himself. I think it was then the next ice storm when the girl died on her way to school. Real shame and I still blame the damned school system for her death. Now they have 3 snow days worked into their calendar and will close; of course, this all started just after I quit. My dumb luck! When you have to make the days up, it is a total waste to open the schools for nothing but a busy day because there are just enough absences and disruptions to the schedules that you usually can't conduct important classes those days. The other teachers know what I'm talking about.
One thing I've noticed, the DC area seems to be much, much better at allowing their employees some leaway with bad days and holidays. I rarely see that in Baltimore. Wish more businesses used more common sense like DC. Days like this, people should stay home and keep the roads clear.
-
DC people = valuable
Baltimore people = scum
But the Washington Monument, in Baltimore. is older than Washington DC, the city. So there!

Word. Preach on, sister. Preach on.
-
Can y'all go shovel Dulles so my flight will actually happen tomorrow? I'm returning to the Baltimore/DC area for a few days and go figure my trip aligns with an ice storm.
-
Just worked a 15-hour day...ugh. Those of you that got to stay home, count yourselves lucky!
-
I love snow, but I was planning on going to the Post Secret exhibition in Baltimore today, and it was cancelled. So that sucked.
"It said you choo-choo-CHOOSE me, and it had a picture of a train!!" :D
-
I went to the exhibit last year and it was really crowded! Fun though.
I stayed home yesterday, but braved my icy parking lot today and made it in with no problem. Nothing like snow to really bring out the fact that people are inconsiderate. No one in our lot shoveled. And you know they're going to take my lovely shoveled spot when they get home.
meanies.
-
I cannot feakin believe DC public schools are closed today - disgraceful!
-
Schools closed again today...yecch!
-
Cabin fever has arrived.
-

i like the people who brush off just enough snow and ice off of their car so they can see to drive, but dont seem to care that ice chunks are flying off of their car in every direction at the rest of the cars on the road.
makes me wonder whether they didnt really think about it, or they just dont care.
makes me wanna make a bunch of snowballs before i leave for work, then just hurl them at those cars...see how they like it!
-
heres a question:
did anyone get to stay home from work yesterday because their work was closed for "non-essential employees"?
if so, how did that make you feel?
-
A Canadian complaining about flying ice?
Isn't that like an Arab complaining about the price of gas?
-

Well, UMCP was closed yesterday but many physical plant and resident facilities employees had to work. Gotta clear the lots and sidewalks and feed the freshman. The libraries were closed so I stayed home and slept in. So did the professors. I felt relaxed and refreshed, got in some listenin' and readin'. And I didn't lose a day of pay.
-

no you piece of white american trash, its not.
-
What if he had said like "complaining about sand?"
-
maybe. but...
i wasnt complaining about ice necessarily, and even if i was, an arab complaining of the price of oil is not similar in any way.
sand would be better, yes.
probably still just as bigoted, but a little more witty and more on point with the analogy.
-
Sorry I'm witless today. I'm having rather a wicked brain freeze.
Is there such a thing as Canadian White Trash?

at work in NYC. but its not sooooo bad. the roads are a bit of a mess and as long as the streets havent turned to ice and i can walk home its all good.
ill hope the subway isnt as much of a nightmare. earlier there were delays on a bunch of the lines.
-
MCPS just cancelled tomorrow too!
woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
-
Our county schools, in Arundel, are out tomorrow. This is maybe a little too much. I love snow days, but is it really that bad out there?
-
Hey, what's one more day. No school on Friday in MoCo.
-
i went out yesterday and everything was fine. but i know that at least in montgomery county, they haven't been able to clear all of the parking lots because everything keeps re-icing. it is divine.
and don't complain, because including the upcoming president's day, we will have had six and a half consecutive days off. which kicks more ass than anything ever. i'm just upset i didn't take a cue and go have a little new york vacation...

Sonicfreeze: "probably still just as bigoted"
And what was bigoted about my poast. Did I say 'black' Canadians?
