Hey all you apt. dwellers. A friend of mine is thinking about subletting her apt. in order to find a cheaper place to live. She's got a few months left on her lease. However, management doesn't allow subletting. Any of you all participate in such shenanigans? Is it easy to get away with?

Gosh, Thirsty, I always thought you were one of those well behaved mommas boys. Now you want to go and help someone break the law?
Good for you! Next thing you know, you'll be eating french fries and Payday's on the metro.

I haven't done it, and probably never would because of the risk.
Having said that, just make sure she knows the person really well. Get references, paystubs, the whole nine yards. Your friend should have her renters' insurance policy up-to-date as well.

That's the angle my lawyer tried to play to keep me out of juvie.

if your subletter turns out to be a psycho, you are basically fuq'd. As the person who signed the lease you remain the one legally responsible for the apartment, and if your subletter stops paying you rent or trashes the apartment or turns it into a crackhouse you are still expected to pay the rent and damages.
although this all seems unlikely, there is actually an incentive for a subletter to stop paying rent, simply because you have no legal grounds to force them to, since the entire arrangment is illicit.

And I'd appreciate it if you'd pay my last invoice in a timely manner. I've got staff to pay.

You fell asleep midtrial and then started drooling on Exhibit A!

Don't do it. Have a friend who would sublet the basement, first housemate was cool (ed) then got a total flake who changed the locks and wouldn't pay the rent. Was hell to get him out, and she ended up having to pay back taxes and stuff for having a renter in the first place.
