Title: lcd soundsystem dance contest
Post by: kosmo vinyl on May 11, 2007, 08:46:00 am
So whose ready to show the world that DC isn't a bunch of hands in the pockets stage starers and do some lockin', shagin', robotin',or any of the 1000 dances out there.

I will be on hand to serve as your DJ and dance contest judge.  If I come tap you on the shoulder kindly leave the dance floor so others can bust the funky chicken.

Quick question... How intertwined is LCD Soundsystem and DFA records.  Is James Murphy just an artist on the label or is behind some of the DFA remixes, etc...

Yeah it's partially his label and the remixes are done by him and Tim Goldsworthy (or is it Sweeny? I always get those 2 confused).

I think I won this competition last time, being on stage and all.

BUT, I will say that I'm definitely bringing my "A" game, and my American Apparel shit for the concert came in yesterday!

there was a small group in the middle/back by the bar that accepts credit cards. that's where my group was dancing... the rest of the people in our immediate area simply couldn't be bothered. hate that.

If you see me coughing in the DJ booth Sunday it will because of the dust being blown off the vinyl... While listening to some New Order remixes I was reminded of the cool Richie Hawtin remix of "Blue Monday" trapped on vinyl, which prompt a scan through the much neglected collection.  There was the 12" inches goodness of B.A.D., Charlatans vs Chemical Bros, Clash, and Detroit Techno of several varieties all saying pick me pick me. Along with my favorite Beastie Boy instrumental b-side. Of course I'm really diggin' the Steve "Silk" Hurley of New Orders "Fine Time" at the moment.  The only think I know for sure at this moment is hope those guys in Tribe Called Quest found their wallet...

this is a great interview with James Murphy.

and last night one of the guys i was hanging out with at the kooks, is a neighbor of James. I know he mentioned something more than that, but the massive intake of beer has done nothing for my memory.

You must not know 'bout me...

Winner takes the crown, not the ribbon. The crown being the guitarist playing riffs while he was sitting on my head in the encore!

But whatevs! I'll show ya's on Sunday!

pardon my ignorance (an on-going request, i realize), but what's the deal with this "dance competition"?  i wasn't at the last LCD show so i'm lacking context.  did something of the sort go down?  did people really end up on stage?

for the ignorant  :)

i wasn't at the last lcd show so therefore have no clue as to went on or off stage

 for me

dance contest = roll call and of course to discuss further that no one actually has fun and dances at shows in dc.  must be that strict DC policy of not allowing dance-a-teria types past the border...

i was the one who mentioned a pre-meet, so let's get this rolling.  just called the club, and set times are:

 Doors 7:30
 Yacht (http://www.teamyacht.com/) 9:00
 LCD Soundsystem 10:00

just downloaded a few of yacht's tracks off his website, and based on these samples of glitchey goodness i wouldn't mind catching his set.

so my proposal is: meet downstairs in the backbar at 8'ish.  head upstairs around 8:45 and catch a few of kosmo's tunes (maybe even throw a few things at him) before yacht. spend the rest of the night dancing and/or standing in place.  going upstairs before yacht should also ensure that we can get decent spots.

i'll be wearing a yellow t-shirt, and will most probably be accompanied by a brunette way way out of my league.  hope to see/meet some of you tomorrow night.

ok, grabbing a bite to eat and heading over to the club... looks like the lady won't be joining me for the backbar session, so look for a dark-haired white boy in yellow t-shirt with 5 small dancing stick-men on the front (AOL mascot).

May or may not be there for the pre-meet & greet, as I'm running a little slow this evening.  Still, I'll probably stop by the booth and say hi to Kosmo between bands.  If anyone sees a guy wearing a light blue TVOTR shirt and dirty shorts (yardwork, wouldn't you know?), please say hi.

Pretty impressive show I must say...and this is coming from someone who is not very fond of the new release   :)

Could have been better, though! DC got a 1 song encore instead of the normal 3-song encore in other cities (we did not get a Joy Division cover, "No Love Lost" and "Someone Great" (my fave song on the new release...WTF!!!) Were they tired or what?!

 Anyway, it was a $15 show...so couldn't really complain...

amazing show.  if you didn't make it, start kicking yourself.  based on LCD's performance at coachella, i wasn't expecting much.  dunno if it was the venue, or the crowd, or the band, or (most likely) a combo of all three, but that was simply a great performance.  i was down on the floor about 25 feet away from the stage, and the energy was probably the strongest i've ever felt it at the club.  if anything, this show puts to rest the "DC doesn't dance" stereotype - the place was hopping (not sure who won the dance competition, tho  :)   ).  the main set, which clocked in at just over an hour, was damn near dance-rawk perfection.  the last song, "yeah", was incredible.  james admitted that his voice wasn't in top shape but he soldiered through and gave us a hell of a show.

two low points: one, the encore. after a very energetic and sincere 5-10 minutes of applause and screaming, the band came back out and played... "new york i love you but you're bringing me down".  and then left.  very anti-climactic after having made the crowd shake their asses off for an hour+ and made them scream for an encore.  meh.  second, the volume.  tonight's show was TOO LOUD.  even with my etymotics in all the way, my ears had a little ringing on the way out.  the encore may well have clocked in as the loudest blues ever played at the club.

opener, yacht, didn't do much for me.  funky white boy spastically singing/rapping along to pre-recorded/pre-mixed tracks on a laptop.  he did get top marks for audience participation and making the most of a one-man/no-instrument show.  he dove in to the crowd twice and cleared a path for himself that he danced & thrashed through.  i guess that was kinda fun, but the music just wasn't there to back him up.

nice to meet nkotb, and thanks to kosmo for his hospitality.  kosmo played a dancier/techno-ier set that i expected, which i enjoyed a lot.  i get half a scene-point for lucky-guessing the hawtin track  :)

Yeah those are my thoughts summed up perfectly. James did say that his voice was shot between a couple songs; that could've been the reason for only one song for an encore.

That show was so much fun.  I'm such a slacker  and i don't have their first album..now i wish i did...that crowd was crazy.  the front got a workout. haha
  ummm
the opening act.  Sucked. was not funny..entertaining...just annoying.

and the encore. i was letdown. I was sooo pumped for more.
 oh well

so i ended up going... and had a fucking blast. didn't realize i was going to go until 7:30 but found a ticket out front no problem (you see that sweetcell?).

as for yacht, i enjoyed his energy and his enthusiasm, not anything i would write home about, but i found him fun and entertaining.

lcd was awesome. i wasn't disappointed (except for the encore) and was able to shake my ass as i am always looking to do. i think the guy behind me tasted my ponytail a few times, but had he been moving half as much i was, he could have avoided it.   ;)    ;)

Did anyone notice !!! up in the balcony, including Tyler Pope, LCD's regular bassist. It was kind of frustrating seeing one of my favorite bass players standing next to the stage while his replacement didn't quite fill his shoes.  Still a fun show, but not quite as magical as the last two times they've been by (9:30 Club with MIA and Sonar with Juan Maclean)

I was proud of the DC kids for getting down though.

I thought YACHT was pretty entertaining, but would have been better with a real musician or two on stage.
Title: Re: lcd soundsystem dance contest
Post by: kosmo vinyl on May 14, 2007, 10:00:00 am
i too thought they were overly loud and perhaps because of not being on the floor bouncing around only thought the show was OK... also thought the new stuff was all pretty average

but it was fun getting dig through my neglected vinyl on Sunday afternoon looking for inspiration, and the reason i don't get out the techno/house/80s vinyl more often is out of laziness and not being able to beat match my way out of a paper bag.

Don't have anything to add that hasn't already been said.  The last time I saw LCD was in Baltimore at Sonar.  The show was a total bore; a friend and I left midway through.  Granted, it was a late weeknight in Baltimore, so being tired was a huge factor.

Last night, though, they were fantastic, and it overcame any exhaustion I was feeling from a hard day of house- & yard-work.  Everyone who mentioned the crowd going crazy was right on; I managed to move my way up to the front and people were spazzing out.  And I'm sure it didn't hurt that they songs were "rocked up" for the stage.  The encore was the only let down; why end such a high energy show with the most slow-tempo'd, non-dance track?  Oh well...I still left with a huge smile on my face.  I swear, they must have played every song I wanted to hear.

YACHT I found highly entertaining.  Dude is not a live entity at all.  One guy dancing to pre-programmed laptop music isn't something that's worth the price of admission, so it was nice to see him doing his best (Q&A session, dancing into the crowd) to really get people into it.  I was amazed so many people applauded him.  And a lot of his songs were pretty catchy.  Still, I'd never go out of my way to see him live again.

And it was great meeting some new people.  Thanks to Joe for recognizing me (and hitting me in the kidney), I got to meet him and sweetcell, who were both super nice.  Look forward to catching you guys before a show so we can actually get a drink and talk.  And as always, it was good to see Kosmo.

Anybody jot down a set list?  This is mine from memory, but I'm not 100% sure this is right:

 US V Them
Daft Punk is Playing at my House
 Time To Get Away
 North American Scum
 All My Friends
 Tribulations
 Watch the Tapes
 Movement
 Yeah

I got a copy of the setlist and they had both "Someone Great" and "No Love Lost" on there in the encore befor "NY I Love You," but they didn't play them. I guess James really must have fucked up his voice like he said. Even still, it was a pretty fantastic show and didn't seem overly short, even without those songs.

His voice was really shot to shit, but he REALLY gave it all during the main set. I wish he'd have done Someone Great/No Love Lost, but it's okay. He'll be back in September.

yes, that was fantastic. before it started i was like, "i really hope it's uncomfortably loud" and they sure came through there. took a couple songs to find the groove, i thought they sped through "daft punk" a bit too much, but from there on out it was just phenomenal. "yeah" couldn't have been more insanely great, same with "all my friends." i usually will only headbob even if i'm really into something, but how could you not be getting down last night? i mean, it's dance music, so i danced. right? also, i was drunk.

anyway, the encore was indeed a letdown because "someone great" is the best song on the album and "no love lost" is the best warsaw-era joy division song and it sounds great on the "all my friends" single, but if his voice really was shot (next to last night of tour, and all) then "someone great" is a tough one to pull off. minor quibble, though. great fun.

Good fun.  Was loud, but not insanely loud, some shows make that one feel like an acoustic set (Garbage).  Give credit to the band for hanging out before and after the show, chatting up the fans.

Kosmo, not sure what song, but the roadies were laughing over one you played early on that they recognized.

I got there around 7:45 and had to find some tickets for two friends who decided to jump in last moment. Only had to wait like 10 minutes though.

Amazing show but a little short. Only song I really wanted to hear but didn't was Sound of Silver. Get Innocuous, Daft Punk, and North American Scum were the songs that really seemed to get the crowd going.

As per Kosmo's request, I danced all evening - albeit poorly. But fun was had by all and for $15 it was incredible.

YACHT was hilarious. I don't know whether he's a genius or a complete idiot, but we all stood with our mouths open the entire set watching that kid freak out. Most "interesting" opener I've seen in a while.

review from fluxblog

LCD Soundsystem @ Webster Hall 5/14/2007

 SETLIST:

Us V Them / Daft Punk Is Playing At My House / Time To Get Away / North American Scum / All My Friends / Get Innocuous! / Tribulations / Movement / Yeah // Someone Great / Watch The Tapes / New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down

I've seen a lot of good live acts since 1995, but very few of them are in the same league as LCD Soundsystem. This was certainly the best show I've seen the band play -- from start to finish, just relentless perfection. I'm afraid that I'm still too overwhelmed to describe it in any useful, thoughtful way.

I can tell you that last night's performances of "North American Scum" and "Yeah" immediately rank among the most completely thrilling concert experiences of my life. I was totally lost within those songs. I felt totally alive.

I can tell you that my appreciation of "Time To Get Away" and "Watch The Tapes" has skyrocketed after having seen them played live. They both seem kinda minor on the album alongside the big epics, but they shine in the context of a concert.

I can tell you that even though "All My Friends" and "Someone Great" may be two of the most sublime songs to be released in this decade, the show was so excellent that they could've skipped them both and it wouldn't have mattered very much.

I can tell you that LCD Soundsystem fans, or at least the ones in the front half of the room, are total fucking maniacs and I love them for it.

I can tell you that James Murphy has become a very good singer; he's really put in the work. He has developed this great, controlled charisma -- he's not hamming it up, but he's definitely putting on a show. The entire group is like that too; they hit this very rare sweet spot between session-player precision and "band of friends" comradery.

I can tell you that whenever my mind wandered (which was very rare), I just kept thinking "Why can't this be normal? Why can't everyone bring it like this? How long will it take before people start to learn from James Murphy and his bandmates?" At first I thought Nancy Whang's vocal hook in "Get Innocuous!" was sarcastic, but maybe it's actually a challenge to other musicians: "We can normalize / don't it make you feel alive?"

Nice review - thanks for sharing. kinda sums up two nights ago. great, energetic show. i havent left a show with clothes dripping wet in a long time, which is completely disgusting, but its impossible NOT to dance when they play. Daft Punk.. was so fast, but it works regardless.

Yacht was very entertaining too. I loved the Q&A's with many of the questions being disregarded because they weren't questions. "You Suck" - to which he responds "Oh Im awesome?"  :)

Great show and was glad I finally got my ass in gear to see them.

yeah, nice review. although i don't know what dude is thinking saying skipping "all my friends" (best song of the set both times i've seen them this tour) wouldn't matter..
