Anyone heading out Sunday night for this one? Any word on what the Furries are doing live these days?
-
I may be in, although more for the Furnaces and Holy Fuck than the SFA.
-
I'll be there.
You can request songs you want played on this site:
http://www.beggarsgroupusa.com/blog/?p=231 (http://www.beggarsgroupusa.com/blog/?p=231)
I'll do my request tonight but it looks like there are only 5 songs requested so far for DC!
-
I'm there
and pumped as hell
that voting thing wotn be the only songs theyd play. however, there are some good choices there
anyone know what time sunday night shows like this one usually end?
-
this is pretty cool with requesting the songs (although it doesnt work for me at work :( ). Ill be seeing them tonight in williamsburg.
-
i have an extra ticket to saturday's show in philly - free to anyone who wants it, although i'll happy accept beer in exchange. PM me if interested.
Super Furry Animals

at Starlight Ballroom, Philadelphia, PA

Maybe.
Don't know much about SFA honestly but I've liked what little I've heard.
Love Holy Fuck live though.
-
I'll be there although I always come out of their shows disappointed. They've seemed disinterested and played short sets at the shows I've seen.
-
I'll be there. I bought tickets having never heard their music, on either 1) a vague recollection of someone's past recommendation or 2) blind faith and a desire to see more shows this year. I've since listened to Phantom Power and I'm digging it.
-
I'll be there.
I'm really interested in Holy fuck...i've only heard what is on their myspace.
Fiery furnaces i need to hurry up and download something.
and
sfa i like what i've heard. Sooooo it should be fun.
-
After doing a radiator-->guerrilla-->rings around the world marathon today I'm excited again. Surprise me SFA!!! Plus I think Hey Venus is one of their best so hopefully this is the one.

just came back from the philly show.
holy fuck tore the place up. their lo-fi junk-yard eletro had the place jumping. i strongly recommend that people get to the club in time to catch their set. azaghal, you won't be disappointed. bring your dancing boots.
we didn't get the fiery furnaces in philly, although it meant that we probably got a little more HF (they played for just under an hour - did i mention how enjoyable and danceable they were?)
SFA were very good, solid... but not mind-blowing. whereas HF hit you upside the head with a sonic sledgehammer, SFA won the crowd over with subtlety. pretty psychedelic pop that pleased, but after HF the crowd was pumped and it was quite a change of energy. i'm not sure this bill was a good pairing, if SFA had a calmer opener i would have left very very happy with their set. but instead i was glad i heard SFA, and really looking forward to hearing HF again (they mentioned that they'll be back in philly at johnny brendas in march, didn't ask about DC). to the person who complained about short sets: they played for about 1:40.
as always, YMMV. except for the holy fuck part - if you don't enjoy that, you have no soul.
-
awesome. can't wait.
-
Looking forward to all 3 bands. The last Holy Fuck album is really good. And I'm a bigger Fiery Furnaces fan now than before.
Did SFA do Venus & Serena?

they didn't last night.

it would have been nice just as a Evening with the Furries, as while the warm-up acts weren't horrid and unlistenable they didn't any value
Holy Fuck were pretty good, but need to work on their compositional skills a little... as all the songs had the same format of intro followed by a couple crescendos... Interesting melodies and hooks just very predictable. Plus, it's a pet peeve of mine but they need to figure out how to keep the flow going between songs. short song with lots of stops kinda of an energy killer..
Fiery Furnances - just didn't see what all the fuss is about them, to me they were just overly clever with all the tempo and what not changes and in need of a little editing.
SFA on the other fan had me engaged and hanging on every note from the get go. They are one of those bands that while I'll don't listen to them on frequent basis, the songs have seeped into my psyche. They also show restraint as they know how to keep the jammin' to just enough to just the right amount. They seem like the types that could easily get lost in the weeds with the guitar wankery... Rarely do I go into a show like this with any set lists of songs I'd like to hear, but they definitely played a number of my favs. Do I wish they had cut loose more often like they did for "The Man Who Don't Give a Fuck"? Of course but the softer stuff works just as well....
-
I thought Holy Fuck's live sets were completely improvised?
I didn't go because I'm lame.

I didn't go because I am sick :(

I didn't go because I was hanging out with my wife instead :)

Not only was the sound fantastic, it wasn't ear splitting loud...

I wish all shows were like that.

im with sweetcell on this show. in BK it was just Holy Fuck and SFA. Holy Fuck were brilliant and the crowd loved them. They played a solid set lasting probably close to an hour. They were quite excited and kept saying how they'd be back in about a month or so. Ill definitely be at their next show - although Im figuring out how to see Digitalism first and not miss Holy Fuck.
SFA were great as always. Solid set, but it lacked the energy that was there previously for HF. Gruff sounded great, and they were excited to play the songs the audience voted on. The first one was "Northern Lights", forgot what the others were. They played for an hour and 40 or so. Im tempted to see them again at Bowery, but not sure yet if Ill commit.
The setlist was as follows:
The Gateway Song
Runaway
Golden Retriever
Do or Die
She's got Spies
Neo consumers
northern lights
battersey
carbon dating
zoom
the gift
earth
juxtapozed
into the night
show your hand
receptacle
slow life
baby at my eightball
calimero
earth
destroy you
hello sunshine
man dont give a fuck
cosmic trigger
rings around the world - was played at some point, not on the set list. they started playing songs that people were yelling out, so the list was a bit messed up - as gruff pointed out.
-
I had a good time as well. Spent an hour or so with Gruff earlier in the day and he was really sweet. A little out of it...but nice all the same.

recognize mah reviewin' skillz.
shit - how to choose between digitalism and HF (appearing with a place to bury strangers)?!? i don't think you/we will be able to make both shows, i'm fearing both acts will be hitting the stage at about the same time. dang dang dang. going to have to think about this one. thoughts? help?!?
i was chatting with someone who claimed that it was the seventh or eigth time he was seeing SFA, and he also stated that this was the most "subdued" he had ever seen them. his tone was tthat of apology with a light hint of disappointment.
-
Setlist addendum: I don't remember them playing Northern Lights but I know they played Torra Fy Ngwallt Yn Hir and possibly The International Language of Screaming (these were my highlights along with She's Got Spies and everything off Hey Venus!).

Digitalism on a Saturday night at webster = early show. as far as i can tell - HF is headlining at North 6 which means late show over there. I wouldnt think HF will be on before 11pm (at the earliest). Im going to call Bowery at some point and find out if HF is def headlining.
and Cornelius ended at 10:30 this past Saturday night, if that gives any sort of indication (also at webster)

good to know about the cornelius precedent. additonal info:
according to the website of the Music Hall of Williamsburg (http://www.musichallofwilliamsburg.com/calendar/show/1189/), show starts at 10:00 so HF on at 11:00 sounds right.
according to digitalism's myspace (http://www.myspace.com/digitalism), they go on at 9:30. i'd definitely want to confirm that, tho. TM (http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/00004037EDDCC4BB?artistid=1153868&majorcatid=10001&minorcatid=5) states that doors are at 7:00. i haven't heard anything about an opener.
hopefully taking the L from webster to williamsburg will be do-able :)

very do-able assuming trains are running on time. its like a 5 min walk (max) to Music Hall of W'burg from there. And the L is near Webster Hall as well.

I've seen them 5-6 times over the years, starting with their show at the old Black Cat before Radiator came out in the US (1997?), and every show has been less exciting than the last.
But that first show was dy-no-mite. As they did then, they encored with Man Dont Give a Fuck and it seemed to last like 15 minutes.
I wish I could remember who the opener was, because I remember they were great.
-
I'm pretty sure radiator was out at that time because I was at that show and remember already knowing the album. I had the version with their b-sides disc included that was on flydaddy.

I also had the double-disc set with b-sides, but I could've sworn I'd bought it on import. You might be right that it had come out in the US, but if it had, I think it had come out within a day or two.
