damn miss p.  bursting my bubble!!!! what was bad about them??

doors are 7.  i'd expect Sea Wolf at 8pm, SSPU around 9.

seems like that would have the show end at 10 though?

i'll be there around 8, figuring nothing will happen before then.

hmmmm....and their music seems to have good energy, and they seem too young to be still standers!  perhaps their own show will give them some extra oomph!  cause i wanna shake my ass too!!!

Opening slots on bigger shows suck the life out of many a band.  The SSPU show at the Black Cat last summer was solid.

let's put it this way. i took my mom (she loves snow patrol as most moms and 14-year-old girls do nowadays although she is pretty hip thanks to her super-sweet daughter) and even she was bored to tears.

So are SSPU more boring on stage than Interpol?

touring with Snow Patrol would suck the life out of me, i know that!

perhaps they were playing to the Snow Patrol crowd, figuring they must like boring music!  ;)

sonick, keep the hope alive.  i seem to remember that in the snow patrol @ bender arena thread, most people enjoyed the pickups.  i also remember thinking that they'd be MUCH better headlineing a smaller venue instead of opening in a larger one - so this show should be right up their alley and i'd have higher expectations for it.  i would be at this show if i didn't already have plans.

The chick bassist is pretty sedentary, and the keyboard dude hides in a corner. But if you just watch the drummer, you definitely won't be bored.

some friends saw them open in nyc on the same tour (and before that at cmj) and they were voted one of the best bands to see live at cmj. id normally take that stuff with a grain of salt, but considering i really liked the other bands listed and saw some of them live, i figure its probably spot on.

seemed most of their shows they played very solid sets that didnt leave people bored to tears. perhaps its the audience? and FYI - snow patrol in NYC draws pretty energetic crowds that do get into their music. im not going to start the DC people dont dance debate, because thats not relevant, but perhaps the show lacked people showing emotion/energy/signs of life??

which reminded me - i saw the dandy warhols at the 9:30 club a few years back, then days later up in nyc. i was able to talk to CTT for a bit and i recalled him saying that the DC show was so bad, that the band just didnt care, and since the crowd wasnt into it, they werent either.

A band might have to be asleep on stage to be less interesting on stage than Interpol

Never seen a boring SSPU show, but I'm a pretty big fan and familiar with the music.  I suppose if you had never heard of them, were generally sKeptical about opening bands, and aren't that patient (I think if you're looking for Snow Patrol/OKGO hooks, and general pop-i-ness then new soundscapes aren't your thing) then they could be boring.  But if you DON'T think Bardo Pond, Sonic Youth, and Big Sleep (non pun intended) are boring then SSPU will be right up your alley as well.  And if I was using my mom as a barometer for what's hot and what's not...well.  No slaggin moms, she took me to most of my early shows (Zepplin/Judas Priest Kingdome 77), Commdores/Earth Wind and Fire Paramount 78, even was groovin in highschool Madonna/Beastie Boys Paramount in 85 got me backstage passes) but still.

Bottom line, I think this will be pretty good, even worth dealing with the smokestack and talking that happens at every baltimore venue:)

I've heard the record with Kissing Families.  Maybe they've gotten better since.  But all I remember thinking is that they sounded like one of the gazillion early nineties alt-rock bands that were on the radio during that period.  And from the video of that song, yea, they look really, really bored.  I admit though that I've never seen them live.

I'm going.  Missed them every other time they've been around so I'm looking forward to it.  I love Pikul and Carnavas.

My only fear is that sunday night + Towson + non-stop touring = lackluster show.  Though, if they've been playing a lot of openers and festivals, a smaller venue like Recher could be more up their alley.

I live "here" so smoke or no smoke that's reason enough.  And something tells me that Sonar, Recher, Ottobar, and Rams Head will have a special dispensation to continue torturing my lungs well into the future

Saw 'em at ChiliCookOff.

Great look, decent sound -- but, despite lots of good moments, the songs aren't great enough all the way through.
 I wish 'em well, though

Baltimore, gets a one year respite of me slaggin it.  This show just entered my top 10 of 2007 and I don't even have 10 great shows for the year quite yet.  For those worried about it being boring, I can only say this was the type of experience I spend way too much money chasing worldwide and I got in my own backyard for next to nothing on a Sunday night no less.  Simply spectacular, and I'm underselling it.   This weekend was wicked, I saw Bjork in Chicago and SSPU throw the gauntlet down on the non-believers...Ok I'll stop slobbering now and go to bed.

Not sure if it was the fact that they were headlining at a smallish club, but this was an excellent show.  The previous comments about lack of stage presence and boring live show certainly didn't apply last night.

i wholeheartedly agree with bnyced0 and shemp and cannot say enough good things!!

definitely NOT boring, even on the tiny recher stage.  the songs were a brilliant mix of melody and fuzzy distortion.  dude's voice didnt miss a note. the drummer was fun to watch too.

and while i thought they were very very good most of the time...they totally killed it on at least 3 songs...lazy eye, kissing families and comeback kid.

and they were totally loving the show too, you know you're a good crowd when the drummer is taking pictures of the audience at the end.  the bassist girl said it was "maybe the best show on the tour" (they were cool enough to come out and chat with people at the merch table after the show).

next time they're in the area....see them, no excuses.

Agree with all of the above - great show, great energy.  That lead has an amazing voice to go from melody to scream and back to melody without so much as a hiccup.  My expectations for Kissing Families and Lazy Eye were sky high, but they still delivered.

Only thing that would've made the show better is for it to have been on a saturday and at Black Cat or somewhere in DC.  Recher is a bitch to get to for me (2 hour drive home with the construction on 95) but I've never seen a bad show there.

Thanks to Bnyced0 for the extra ticket!

Yeah, wish I'da known about that paving work going on on 95.  Made for an unpleasant trip south.  And running over that deer carcass was pretty nasty too.  At least the show was good.

I must have hit that thing doing 70+.  Knocked my car out of gear and scared the shit out of me; fortunately, my whip seems no worse for it. I have no idea how I didn't see that thing laying in the road.

I concur with all the other reviews - excellent show. Better than the backstage show.  I guess touring for the last 6-9 months has tightened them up. The Pilipino animal behind the drum kit still steals the show, in my opinion.

Sea Wolf were pretty good -- kind of like the Decemberists with balls.  I don't know that I would rush out to see them again, but I'm glad I caught their set.

I was merging onto 32W when I noticed flashing blue and red lights in the distance.  Having had an 'incident' with HoCo police on this road before I was a bit concerned.  With my attention directed uproad I failed to see the Bambi bits strewn in front of me.  Fortunately I was able to steer my entire right side directly over the largest chunk.  Whump!

After spending an hour on 95 going a total distance of about 4 miles, I needed a bathroom break, so I pulled off on 32.  Like Shemp, I got distacted by the cop on the shoulder.  Then, after swerving around the scattered entrails, I saw the motherlode too late and my left wheels went right over it.

Wow! after reading this thread I was so hoping for something really great. Im a huge fan of SSPU, but last nights show was a f'ing nightmare. Granted it was entertaining at moments, but if there were vocals on songs, you'd have never known. Songs were indistinguishable because the guitars were so loud and everything sounded the same. It was pure disappointment.

For entertainment - we did get a lesson gravity and jumping up and down, vs jumping into your neighbors and starting a mosh pit. so basically the only time you could hear any vocals is when the band was not playing.

This has occurred at plenty of shows in the past at Webster Hall and I thought this was remedied, but perhaps not. Needless to say, Im not rushing out to see them anytime soon. It might have been one of the worst shows I've seen this year.

It didnt help that I saw LCD Soundsystem the night before at Webster Hall, and that show kicked ass!

My friend agreed with me, so I know it just wasnt me. A lot of disappointed fans.

Sea Wolf were OK. A bit mellow, but their second to last song, was really enjoyable. The cellist and drummer joined up on 2 different songs with the band. Cant remember what they were right now, one possibly Lazy Eye but I'm not entirely sure.

They did, and it helped everyone played such short sets so they could basically wrap their most accessible songs into a killer rapid fire package. I guess I'm just a homer for the band, I said it before I've never seen a bad SSPU show, only lame SSPU crowds.

Yeah, Sea Wolf definitely came up on Lazy Eye.  The other song I can't remember.  I'll upload some video footage for you of their B'more & D.C. shows.  Bnyced0 was there in Bmore & I'm sure can vouch for the awesomeness of the show.  Then again, they did do D.C. Saturday, Bmore Sunday, Philly Monday, & N.Y. on Tuesday.  Maybe it was fatigue, maybe the venue sucked ass, maybe they were off.  Who knows??? I made a thread about my "SSPU Weekend".  Check it out if you care . . . . Peace . . .

P.S. I'm a be around your way come late July for both nights of Rage/Wu-Tang @ Randall's.  We should get up for drinks or something . . . . .

Yes - I agree 100% about Webster Hall. As I said, lately sound has been good there. LCD Soundsystem sounded great there. Perhaps it wasnt all about sound for them, but just great energy, and lots of love.

It was a sold-out show and had been sold out awhile. Last time, I believe they played Bowery and sold out that as well.

As far as the crowd, they were definitely into it. As I mentioned, the lead singer (Im drawing a blank on names, aside from Nikki) stopped the show at one point, because the crowd (front area at least) was out of control. Made some comment about how the guys shouldnt be hitting/crashing into all the pretty ladies. The crowd showed lots of love for the band, so I dont think it was a lack of energy by the band, I just think that their sound was shite.

They had a nice little jab about the "festival" they played in DC and they couldn't believe they were playing on the same stage as Buckcherry. It was pretty funny.

Oh and plenty of people I know said it was one of the best shows they went to. I take that with a grain of salt from most people, but I go to at least 5x (if not more) as many shows as probably the average person. Perhaps Ive become a bit more picky, or just have seen incredible shows that they dont know what theyre missing.

I dont know if being in back would have helped in this case. I was in the very front, standing right in front of Nikki. She seems a cool cat.

No worries about the board review and my reception of the show. I had a ticket months ago, long before the review. It has been sold out for awhile too. I had always wanted to see them, and love their music. Im still glad I got to see them, just wont be trying to see them anytime soon at larger venues. I think the Bowery or Mercury might have been better for sound.

We should get up for drinks or something . . . . . [/b]
read your thread about your weekend with them. i was very envious  :)

im always up for drinks. shoot me an email or remind me on here when it gets closer.

I was backstage with Joe, Chris, & their manager for the last part of Buckcherry's set pretty much just clowning.  Until I heard, "Lit Up", I had no idea they were even still onstage.  The shit sounded like one long ass song.  The lead singer walks offstage right by us with this weird ass look on his grill like, "I just rocked it."  We just looked at each other and started fuckin' laughing . . . . . .

â??As far as the crowd, they were definitely into it.

She seems a cool cat.â?

A couple of things youâ??ve said stand out to me.  Iâ??m curios where were you standing for LCD SS?  I canâ??t imagine that being totally up front at ANY show would sound that great, unless youâ??re at very large venue where even the front is separated from the stage/sound system by quite some distance.  The sweet spot in the PA imaging is going to be somewhere in the middle, and highs may have been just being blown over you if you were having trouble hearing the vocals.  Itâ??s sort of like when you set up your speaker system at home, you wouldnâ??t put your listening seat in back of, or parallel with the speakers the imaging would be beyond your hearing and you would just get bass and reverb.  Or perhaps an even better analogy would be if you were listening to an ipod with the ear buds partially dislodged from your ears.  Anyway, based on what you said about others impressions it may be a case of you being a concert-holic and it takes more and more to get you drunk, I recognize the symptoms and if there is a Concert Anonymous keep the freaks that attend the hell away from me because Iâ??m staying OFF the wagon.

i agree with this, mostly about 30 feet back dead center is where i try to find a spot. i dont need my hair blown back by the sound!

for lcd soundsystem i was in the middle area i guess. but i am hearing from A LOT of people that the vocals were shite for sspu from everywhere in the club. most the people i heard that from were in the middle. so i think it was just an off night. i happened to be in the very front, but ive been in the same area for some bands and havent heard the sound that bad in a long time. sea wolf sounded fine from where i was. so perhaps just their setup?

webster hall used to be awful for most shows, as most bands just didnt sound so great. it seemed they have improved lately.

I will be seeing JAMC there and plan to be nowhere near the front, unless i want my ears to bleed.

oh as far as being in the front - im so short that if im in the middle i guarantee i wont see near anything. and im not a huge fan of balconies and arriving so very early to get a great spot.

Actually only 1 for each night (29th/30th) so two total.  I have someone that agreed to try, but if you're going to give it a whirl I'll pay for them if you can get 1 for each show, if I end up with two I'll just give the extras away for free.

I'll see them on Tuesday, and the following Monday so I'll give you a detailed report on what we actually have in SP 2007.
