let's begin the 2 week debate over stat categories ... can anyone dig up last year's thread?

No holds. I think this category is pure luck.

I prefer to get rid of walks, but it is not a dealbreaker.

traditional 5x5 is almost always the way to go. if the sabremetric folk wanted OBP instead of AVG, i'd be down with that, but could go either way.

there could always be more than one league...
i've always wanted to make a league with almost completely off-the-wall categories rather than the standards..

i run a cumulative points-based league every year that's based on something similar to this:

 Stat Modifiers:

 Hitting

 TB (5)
 R (5)
 RBI (5)
 SH (2)
 SF (2)
 SB (5)
 CS (-3)
 BB (3)
 IBB (1)
 HBP (3)
 K (-1)
 GIDP (-3)

 Pitching

 TBF (3)
 K (1)
 GIDP (1)
 ER (-4)
 TB (-1)
 BB (-1)
 HBP (-1)
 WP (-1)
 BLK (-1)
 SB (-1)

 SV (90)
 SVOP (-40)
 W (45)
 L (-15)
 HLD (40)

the pitching is being radically revamped this year, but the hitting should be similar

i'll let you know if there are any open slots

my proposal:

 OBP / SLG / R / RBI / SB

 ERA / WHIP / W / K / Sv

i'd really prefer to do a league that uses SLG in some way (OPS, SLG, whatever)

the points league was actually very cool...

I love the idea of a league with more off-the-wall categories.

I was going to be in a league that tossed W (overrated stats if ever there was one, especially in the Minors), Sv and straight BB and K out the window and was going with ERA, WHIP, BB/9, K/9 and AVG against for pitchers ... can't recall the offensive categories but it definitely included OPS, AVG R and TB ... not sure what the fifth was. Maybe SB-minus-CS?

But it was going to be an all-Minor League league, and sadly the commish realized that the stat service could not access all the Minor League stats, and he had too many other leagues to be able to do it by hand.

I can access the stats but until they add about 10 more hours to the day, I am not volunteering for that job ...

Hats off to the folks who tally the points leagues by hand. My former boss did it every day for a 15-team league with active 40-man rosters.

Callat, would love to hear more about your league at Rock and Romp.

i want bonuses for pitcher's hitting. . .if that means an nl only league, so be it (the dh rule still sucks).

no offense, sue, but your league sounds retarded ... why would you use three overlapping stats like OPS, AVG and TB?

Oh, first of all, it's not "my league" ... just one that I was approached about in the formative stages of discussion but it was pretty much nipped in the proverbial bud once it was realized that no stat service could do it ... so no offense taken as far as that goes.

Honestly, while I know those were the five pitching categories, I don't specifically recall the five offensive categories since it was discussed and discarded pretty quickly ... so now that you mention it, it may well have made more sense than that. My bad.

The league I AM in is very run-of-the-mill (AVG, HR, RBI, SB, W-minus-L, ERA, K, Sv, blah blah blah). So was just sayin' that I'm intrigued by the idea of something more complex ... (and hey, don't worry, I wasn't asking to be in your league, I just was interested to read the "fantasy baseball" thread here).

since no one else did this, i started a league

 http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/league/930_2007 (http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/league/930_2007)

 the password is 'aaaa'

 the draft is this sunday.
please don't sign up if you're going to just give up in the middle of the season.
i'm open to tweaking the scoring or whatever else, but there's not much time til the draft and it's mostly the same settings as last year's league.

i am in. the league ID # is 245613 if people couldn't figure that out (it took me a few minutes). this will be the last year i kick all y'all asses, ok?
Title: Re: fantasy baseball
Post by: distance on March 21, 2007, 05:22:00 pm
i bumped it down to 2 DL.

if we want to add in some other stats (1 pitching, 1 hitting), i'd do that, but i really don't like using 'holds' like we had last year.  wouldn't mind TB and some other stat?

it is set up for a live draft, but even with a live draft you can do rankings and have it auto-draft for you.  i would consider moving the draft but i went ahead and put it sunday because we don't have long to get the draft done and also i already have 2 other drafts on sunday.

anyway, feedback.  and signups! come on.

i could move it to say 330 or something.  i just need it to be before 430 personally.   we have 7 now.. i'd like to hit 10 at least... so 3 more spots we should really fill. i think it's set to 12, so there's really 5 more spots..

draft doesnt matter to me on sunday, i cant do it at all on sunday.  but i dont know what the hell i'm doing anyway, so i just pre-ranked a ton of dudes and figure yahoo'll probably do a better job than me anyway!

so ok

teams are set, but since i have never played this before, give me some knowledge.

so there's a limit on games each position can use? so if i play a catch every day, sooner or later, i'll use up all his spots? or is that each player can only play 162 games (which would be the max anyway)

and i dont really understand rotisserie or head to head or whatever.  are we playing against another team each week? or what?

help me out so i dont just get my ass kicked too bad (though, unless the red sox and tigers have monster seasons, i will anyway!)

for the game limit, consider this. . .it's a 162 game season, but there are more than 162 days in the season.  it's a matter of parsing out your starters.  unless you have 3 catchers, that is one position that you are not likely to have problems with.  frankly, don't really worry about game limit for the first few months of the season, just focus on starting your best players and making sure they are playing that day- many times have i rued the fact that i put someone in the starting line-up, only to find out they didn't start, and got 0 points out of the position for that day.

as for structure- everyday you make your line-up, and your standing is based on the stats put up by those players you started on that day.  based on those numbers, you are ranked against the other teams stat-by-stat; so, since there are 9 teams in this league, if you are leading the league in runs, you'll get 9 points, but if you are last in runs, you'll get 1 point, and so forth for each stat category.  person with most points at the end of the season wins.

 hope that helps.

This is a lineup sure to put the fear of god in any opponent:

The Pirates have announced that Tony Armas and Tom Gorzelanny will fill out their starting rotation, which will also feature Zach Duke, Ian Snell and Paul Maholm. Duke will take the mound next Monday when the Pirates open the 2007 season in Cincinnati.

They've come a long way from what could have been:

 Jason Schmidt
 Jeff Suppan
 Chris Young
 Zach Duke
 Oliver Perez

Maybe this will finally be the end of the Dave Littlefield era.

i was away rounding up the next bunch for a fiddler crab convention, so i didn't have time to comment on this.  but what a fantasy team these guys would make: a catcher, a man with a big bat, and a guy in bondage. except of cource for that f'd-up left arm of gimp boy.  that thing looks like a t-rex chicken wing.

funny.  I have the #1 pitching staff in the league with a sick 2.24 ERA (which is slightly higher than the ERA of the Red Sox top 4 starters)  but i have the WORST bunch of batting losers ever, the #8 hitting team.

well, the real problem is that we have so few roster spots for 8 teams .... you could play with 4 teams if you had enough roster spots to make it interesting
