I'll be there...after having seen a lackluster show in Chicago (Morrissey w/the Killers), I could use something with a little energy.
-
what was lackluster about it?

I'm going. I'd like to get there early enough to see at least some of Reigning Sound's set but I'm not sure if that'll happen.

My complaints about the Morrissey show: mainly that it was very downtempo and lacked an energy that is usually there at his concerts. However, a lot of people commented that they had seen him earlier in the year and this was better. Also, a couple of drunks made it difficult initially to enjoy the show. I managed to get away from them thankfully. The highlights were definitely "Such a Little Thing Makes Such a Big Difference", "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out", "I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday" and then they started off "Subway Train" by the NY Dolls and went into "Everyday is Like Sunday". The band wasn't cohesive for the first half of the show, then they got it together though. Nice to see Boz and Gary still on guitar and bass.
-
Damn. I missed getting tix. Just like last time at the Black Cat. Damn damn damn.
-
I'll be there along with a gaggle of others, including the entire Exit Clov crew (aren't I lucky). Listened to a promo of the new Sahara hotnights CD, its ok. What's the skinny on Reigning Sound? They worth seeing?
-
I'll be there with a few friends. Can't make until Sahara -- we've got a dinner beforehand.
-
I've been told to go. So...I should be there - when? Depends on set times...
-
I'm heading to New York in the morning....hate to miss the show but that's the way scheduling happens!....I was been cranking the new Hives disc all weekend while I was at the beach and it was pretty damn cool....look for then to do their one hour set and leave everyone drained.....have fun!...

Hope you have a ticket already! Since there are three bands playing, I'm guessing the first one will begin around 8:15/8:30pm with the Hives going on between 10-10:30pm.
Yeah, I'm not expecting more than an hour from the guys, probably closer to 45 minutes.

looks like I'll be there thanks to the generosity of a friend

I enjoy this Rolling Stone review because of the capsule explanation of the other garage bands (second paragraph)....
The Hives
Tyrannosaurus Hives

For the stellar garage-rock class of 2002, it's time to show and prove. The Hives blew out of Sweden a couple of years ago, riding the maniac guitar attack "Hate to Say I Told You So," part of a wave of hot young bands giving rock & roll a desperately needed kick in the ass. Like the Strokes, the Stripes and the Vines, the Hives arrived in style. They had matching black-and-white suits, party-commando lyrics, a drummer who must have done time, cheap Detroit-style punk riffs and madman vocalist Howlin' Pelle Almqvist. They also had a killer single: "Hate to Say I Told You So" was a Swedish version of Blur ripping Pavement ripping Big Black ripping the Music Machine ripping the Stones -- and an instant classic.
Now the Hives face the same question as their garage comrades: What do you do for an encore? Well, if you're the Strokes, you could streamline your original rhythmic concept on a sharp new bunch of songs and prove yourselves as groove masters. If you're the White Stripes, you could stretch out stylistically, indulge all your sickest pretensions and prove you can get away with anything except letting the drummer sing. You could also get drastically better (the Von Bondies), have your lead singer lose his mind on drugs (the Libertines), try to sell your fans weak outtakes from your first album (the Vines) or attempt a song titled "Hong Kong Fury" (the Datsuns). Or you could just plain suck as bad as any of the new-metal dinosaurs you were supposed to replace (Jet).
But the Hives have a smart strategy: They strip it down beyond minimalism, refining their sound to an elemental buzz and blast with a scientific sense of precision. Tyrannosaurus Hives is so tight and efficient, it makes Veni Vidi Vicious sound almost like it came from a jam band. It adds Devo-like keyboards to the same mechanically engineered herky-jerk riff, set on "stun," for a filler-free half-hour of fast thrills -- thirty minutes and five seconds, actually. Almqvist has a violent relationship with the English language, screaming over the top as high-speed riffs such as "Abra Cadaver," "Walk Idiot Walk," "Antidote" and "See Through Head" go slamming into one another like an ugly day at the go-kart track.
The only stylistic departure is a great one -- the near-ballad "Diabolic Scheme," a brazenly synthed-up rip of James Brown's "It's a Man's Man's Man's World." Almqvist lets his tortured wail fly ("I had time well spent/I got your mind well bent") over a fake string section and a guitar solo that eerily replicates the sound of the late Robert Quine. Elsewhere, the Hives are more at home just revving the tempo and letting the staccato guitars beat each other senseless, as in the album's finest moment, "B Is for Brutus," which takes less than three minutes to play and might have even taken longer to write. The Hives may be hard-partying rock animals, but from the sound of Tyrannosaurus Hives, they're also a tribute to the precision and power of Swedish engineering.

From yesterday's Post:
HERE & NOW
Sunday, July 18, 2004; Page N09
POP MUSIC
EVERYONE WILL BE THERE for the Hives, a quintet of Swedish neo-garage meatballs, but show up early on Tuesday night at the 9:30 club and catch the opening act. The Reigning Sound is led by Greg Cartwright, who reminds you of what's missing from most of the retro rock being made these days: great songs. In a former incarnation, with the much-missed Compulsive Gamblers, Cartwright wrote "Stop and Think It Over," which is one of those ageless tracks that don't seem composed so much as discovered -- as if it were always there, waiting to be stumbled over. With the Reigning Sound, Cartwright has channeled the spirit of '50s doo-wop through his vintage amplifiers, to memorable effect on an album called "Time Bomb High School." The band's latest, "Too Much Guitar," draws from more modern inspirations and seems every bit as inspired.

i'll be there.
-
i'll be there and have an extra ticket to sell...
edit - ticket is on its way to a good home...
-
i'll be there...only for the reigning sound. i posted my thoughts on this fantastic band about a month ago in another thread about this show.
i'm leaving after TRS to go to the black cat to see thee snuff project and the ponys. i might stick around for a little bit of sahara hotnight action, but i really don't care for the hives.
too bad these two shows are happening simultaneously.
-
I'm looking forward to seeing The Reigning Sound. (The Hives actually covered a Compulsive Gamblers song last time they were in town.) And I'm expecting some good, witty lines from Pelle. And a few high kicks as well.
I do wish the Ponys show was a different night. I really, really wanted to see them. Damn.

Yup, my friend just confirmed. I'm there.
-
I'll be there (broken arm and all). Despite a band new titanium plate and eight screws in my right arm just above the elbow thanks to the great game of hockey, I'll drive up from Richmond to catch this one. BTW I do have two extra tickets so if you need a pair look for me with my arm in a sling. I usually get there early enough to be near the front of the line. Probably go upstairs to the bar at the back so I can rest the arm if I need to. (Yes I'll be back on the ice soon too!)
-
I'll be there.
So I've heard good things about Reigning Sound... anyone know if Sahara Hotnights is any good? (Besides being a quartet of hot Swedish babes.)

Sahara Hotnights are pretty good live. I saw them a couple years back when they opened for the Mooney Suzuki at the 9:30. Stellastarr* was also on that bill. Pretty energetic and I remember the lead singer being a near carbon copy of Runaways-era Joan Jett.

I saw a bunch of their promo stuff at Tower. I saw their stickers and picture of four women and I thought they were those four women w/ violins (know who I mean?).

Can't wait to see the show tonight-- my friend will be there earlier than i will to get a good spot in line. There may not even be a line but, better safe than sorry. When we saw the Hives at the Black Cat several years ago the line was around the block. The Sahara Hotnights are a great band too, but I forgot to bring my cd to work with me so i guess i can't get it autographed by them. Oh well. I'll totally be there! I'll be one of (the only) black ladies in the audience. If you see me, feel free to say hello. :)

Olsson's has the CD for $12.99. I'm sure it can be found less, but I went for the local chain within a decent walking distance from my office.
Album clocks in at 30:03.

Hey, Rhett. I dunno where I've been... I guess I did drop off the scene awhile. But I'm still here. I just haven't been going to too many shows as of late. Also my pc is on the fritz at home so the only chance i get to use the forum is here at work. It's feels nice to be missed, though.
-
Wow. Just wow. What a great fuckin' show!
-
Broken arm and all I made it to the show and back home. Got very lucky and got invited to the sound check party. Chris gave me a drum stick which he autographed for me. Met some new friends and saw a kick ass show. Thanks once more to Eddie and the crew for running such a freaking great club.
-
Haha! Just learned that my boss also attended the show.
-
yup the show was hot, the crowded exploded when the fab songs from VVV were cranked out and i forgot how many standout tracks there were. for me a great drummer is whats sets a band apart from other bands. and chris dangerous is a monster... pelle seemed a bit less jaggeractive this time out, but still quite the energtic front/show man. rest assured he's lifted some daltrey mic swinging into his stchick.
-
wow - quite a show - any band who can get a DC crowd jumping around like that has my enduring respect - twas lots o fun at the front
good music, great showmanship - the lead singer is freakin hilarious
-
Great show. I had a big grin the whole time.
Did anyone else see Pelle standing at the backdoor immediately after the show, thanking people for coming?
-
A few of the guys were back there, thanking folks. It was a great show. Sahara Hotnights were a tad bland for my taste, but I oh so needed a good dose of loud punky music in my diet. The Hives were great.
-
All three bands performing last night were top-notch. Pelle is an excellent showman along the lines of Mick and JB. The Hotnights were fast and loose and sexy as all hell. The Reigning Sound were also impressive and I intend to cop one of their records.
-
Wow. What a show! This one was even better than their last one at the Black Cat several years ago. Unbelievable. Front and center is where i was and it was great. Got to grab onto Pele a few times too. Okay, so i got banged in the head with a few elbows and I think someone felt me up  but hey, it's rock and roll right? Besides, I got an autographed post poster pre-show and Nick Arson gave me one of his picks before they left the stage. Just handed it right to me. Just wished i could have stuck around later.
-
I was really astounded -- people kept saying they put on a great show, but I didn't think it would be that good. I'm not a huge fan; I have VVV but never listen to it. DAMN-olicious, they were great, with energy and personality that filled the whole damn club. And hilarious. "Washington, Deee Ceee..." How many times did he say that? And Nicholas -- that man stands between songs with a shit-eating grin that says, "hey, I'm cool -- I *know* I have the biggest dick in the room."
I can't believe Pelle was ever *more* Jagger-esque. That's scary.
And Sahara Hotnights brought nothing to the show, I thought. For a group with energetic songs, they got *one* person in that crowd moving. Granted, I was upstairs for this show (not my norm, but some friends wanted to be up there), and there was no energy whatsoever. Had me worried about the Hives set -- I was ready to move downstairs by myself, but no need. The whole place rocked for nearly their entire show. Glad there was enough buzz here on the forum to get my bad self over to the club to get tickets a couple weeks ago.
Oh, and hey, who was the luckiest gal at the show? ME, I got this bitchin' Exit Clov CD on my way out of the club...

Ah, the little things in life.
-
Great show, many thanks to Kosmo for hooking me up with a ticket.
I liked Reigning Sound mostly because the songs were very simple, but they came across well. The singer/guitarist looks like an average-at-best guitar player, but he pulled it off anyway. If they keep getting better, they could make a go at it.
Sahara Hotnights were pretty flat. Thing is, they all seem pretty skilled with their instruments, and the songs seem to be well constructed, but it just comes off as flat. The vocals are waaaay too screechy, for one thing. When I saw them a year or two ago as a headliner at Black Cat, I enjoyed it quite a bit. Last night, not so much.
And the Hives were great. Again, it was hard to really hear the vocals (and this was from a front-and-center balcony spot), so the new songs didn't always move me, but the hits from VVV and Barely Legal definitely came across. They're a great band, lots of fun to see, and I was also grinning and laughing the whole time.
Great way to spend 16 bucks.
-
The Reigning Sounds' drummer looked as if he came straight from the office to the show.

My sentiments exactly. I expected him to pull out a laptop or something. Why was he the only one wearing a suit? Kinda distracting to me.
-
I loved the show. They are such a fun band, and Pelle's comments always make me laugh out loud. Loved the posturing. Loved the tunes (new ones included). (I had forgotten just how much I love Main Offender.) My favorite moment of the night was when Pelle said, "I've been watching the news here. No honestly, I have. I am being completely serious. So I have been watching the news, and I think you all have been (screams) OUTSMARTED!" Great, great segueway into a song. Pelle reminds me of an evangelical preacher.
I did not like Sahara Hotnights at all. I found the tunes incredibly flat. And I was disappointed by The Reigning Sound as well. I guess I was expecting something different from them. But The Hives delivered!

I laughed out loud myself, a number of times. I loved it when Pelle looked at Nicholas and said, "Nicholas, give them some candy. Give Washington, DC, some candy..." WAAAAHHHHH, into Main Offender...
I'm assuming you were way up front, Kurosawa...?
-
Great show. They're great performers. Reigning Sound was good too, but sahara hotnights sucked.
-
i was there for the reigning sound, and i thought they totally kicked ass. 25 minutes of pure r&b-influenced, raw garage. greg cartwright, the singer/guitarist, has been doing this stuff for well over a decade, and though his abilities on guitar may be limited, he writes amazing songs and has more soul than five average garage rock bands combined. i last saw him with the oblivians on their 1997 farewell tour, and the reigning sound rarely tours, so i was completely satisfied.
i saw about three sahara hotnights songs before i left to go to the black cat. they were catchy and poppy but nothing extraordinary. at least they're superior to the donnas.
i saw the ponys over the hives, and i'm glad that i did. they proved that in the red has never signed a crappy band, and probably never will. they are a quartet comprised of two guitarists, a bassist, and a drummer, and they all take turns playing a farfisa (except for the drummer). one of the guitarists played a rickenbacker, and their chord progressions mixed classic jangly folk-rock with snarling upbeat garage-rockers. my only criticism was that the drummer had a pretty weak sound.
thee snuff project opened and served up a strong set of their own style of garage-psych. those of you who like the carlsonics should do yourself a favor and see thee snuff project next time they play.

No, with my injured foot, I was safely tucked away in the balcony. But front row balcony!
And Snailhook, please bring The Ponys to the Warehouse. I was really sorry to miss them!
-
I was up on the balcony, but middle row of the steps on the left (facing the stage) -- didn't see anyone, but didn't look as I figured most of you were tucked up close to the stage.... Sorry about your foot -- looks like you really banged it up! Blech...
-
Sounds like a bunch of us injured folks were at the show and in the balcony. I got there early enough that I got one of the bar stools (dead center) at the upstairs bar. The arm in a brace and sling would have not done well on the rail where I usually hang out.

From the Washington Post:
Sweden's Hives, Itching to Play at the 9:30 Club
Thursday, July 22, 2004; Page C10
There's one conspicuous difference between the two Swedish bands that performed Tuesday night at the 9:30 club: The Hives are showmen and Sahara Hotnights are songwriters.
The headliners took the stage in matching two-tone outfits -- black shirts, white jackets, black pants, white shoes -- as a neon sign proclaimed "The Hives." The quintet essentially updates the Ramones formula, playing old-timey rock faster and harder than any '50s rockabilly cat could have imagined. But where Joey Ramone was coolly detached, Hives frontman Pelle Almqvist is a hyped-up huckster, extolling his band's greatness after every number. Some of those songs -- notably "Missing Link" and "Dead Quote Olympics" -- were pretty catchy, but the band relied more on swagger than melody. Borrowing heavily from Mick Jagger and James Brown, Almqvist was a dynamic yet overly self-conscious presence. He kept the 50-minute show moving briskly, while carefully avoiding spontaneity.
The music of Sahara Hotnights is a dissertation in punk, glitter and classic rock, as thoroughly footnoted as that of the Hives. From pithy guitar riffs to unison choruses, however, the quartet's music is much better endowed with hooks. Paced by sprightly tunes including "Walking on the Wire" and "Difference Between Love and Hell," the band's 35-minute set never faltered.
Still, Hotnights would be livelier onstage if singer-guitarist Maria Andersson weren't so dominant. The group doesn't need identical costumes, but a little more interplay between the musicians would make them more interesting to watch.
The show opened with a Memphis trio, the Reigning Sound. In some other context, its twangy but near-tuneless retro-rock might have been refreshing, but on this bill the Sound was just more evidence that American rock inspiration has been outsourced.

Just watched the video for "Walk, Idiot, Walk" on Yahoo! Launch (http://launch.yahoo.com/artist/default.asp?artistID=1054175). Very cool video to check out.
I haven't seen MTV2 in a while, so I'm not sure if this is in rotation on there or not.

There aren't too many bands out there that can wear white spats and make it work.

Seriously! That was the most excited I've seen Dave about a band in a long time. He was genuinely into the band.

I saw the Letterman appearance too -- amazing, and Dave's reaction was great.
