WASHINGTON - Despite hours of often heated debate, members of the D.C Council have passed a smoking ban.
The council approved the ban on Wednesday by a vote of 11 to 1, with one council member absent.
The legislation -- which will take effect January 2007 -- would ban smoking in most places with the exception of hotel rooms, medical research facilities, cigar and hookah bars and tobacco stores.
Bars, restaurants, brew pubs, taverns and nightclubs that earn at least 10-percent of their revenue through tobacco sales would also be exempt.
Councilwoman Carol Schwartz was the only council member to vote against the smoking ban and says she feels good knowing she's "not responsible for taking away civil liberties [from] consenting adults making free choices."
The approval of the smoking ban was "historic," Councilwoman Kathy Patterson says.
"We're moving in a very, very good direction and I'm hoping that with time that we can perhaps even strengthen our smoke-free bill," she says.
The council rejected a slew of amendments, including a proposal by Councilman Adrian Fenty to move up the date the restriction would go into effect to July 2006 instead of January 2007.
Backers of the new measures have been trying since 2004 to pass a ban on smoking in most indoor locations.

As most other jurisidictions have proven, a smoking ban does not really affect levels of patronage. Friends in California has told me people get used to it and a ban actually helps business. It's a great day for DC!
-
yay FREEDOM!!!
-
And in related news, the 9:30 Club is looking into ways they can designate the upstairs portion of the club as a "hookah bar".
-
yay! pity Fentys amednment didn't pass, oh well, 361 days to go :D
-
yay, government once again imposes its will upon the people! yay!!!
-
Shame they have to make any laws at all. Damn the government!

In Va there's some laws saying bars have to make a certian % of profit from food sales to be in compliance with ABC laws. To be in compliance,in like '88 or '89 this one bar in Richmond called the Jade Elephant would give a coupon for one free hotdog to every person that paid the cover charge. So basically to get in you bought a hotdog that you did not eat.
Maybe 9:30 and Black Cat could do something like this with cigarettes?

Welcome to 1998.

shame that they decided to legislate what people can and can't do. a person can choose not to go out to a bar and can choose to drink at home.
-
everyone loves the govt when they make a law that suits them.
lets hope for Rhetts sake they dont ban shitty country music in DC bars next..

Good one.

Well if people went around taking dumps on the floor at bars and restaurants, I'm all for them legislating that, too.

I thought you were quitting after that last packet of Fortuna's!

The timing of this sucks. I put up with cigarette smoke at shows for 20+ years, and the year that I'm planning on effectively retiring from going to clubs is the year they ban smoking. Great. But I guess I should be happy for the rest of the clubgoing DC audience.

Why the retirement? Is it cuz you're planning a family? Just cuz there's litte ones underfoot doesn't mean you never go out again.
-
You're right. "Extended vacation" from clubgoing would have been the more accurate term. Retirement, probably not.

:p You actually plan (with actual year) to stop going to shows? You don't head out that often now, really, do you? Why the need for an official going out party?

the DC ticket sales for alterna-country shows just dropped by 50%!!!!!
-
I plan to stop going to shows once my wife is pregnant and when we have a small infant at home. When the kid gets older, I reckon we'll begin going to shows again, if it's something we're still interested in.

Celeste is still going to go?

Yep, the 9:30 Club will only be half full the next time Old 97's or Drive By Truckers come to town.

-
Is your game plan to try to say random stuff that will draw my ire? It isn't working, nice guy.

thats your game, actually. i just made a joke.

It definately does...I have 2 kids....I guess that makes me a doubly super duper bad parent. The least I could do is give the kids something better to sleep on than a straw mat on a dirt floor and newspapers for diapers. Who can afford anything though with these 930 ticket prices!

They say that kid is 9 but just look at the picture....he's at least 10 or 11. They would have been fine home alone for a few days.
-
Geez, ladies. Don't get so defensive. By the time I have a kid and (s)he's beyond infancy, I'll be well into my 40's. I don't envision myself going to club shows forever, so who knows if I'll even still have the desire. And having a wife who has minimal interest in going to shows (until I take her and she actually enjoys herself) doesn't exactly make concerts a hot date event...
That being said, good for you. Glad you can work the rock and roll into your schedules. More power to you.

One or two nights a year at best. What happened to "date night"? Gotta keep things new w/ the home fires burning, ya know? (for kid #2... )

Who's being defensive? I'm raising my kids natural style - and proud of it.

Well, depends. Rhett, does this mean you won't be coming around the fora in 2007?
Good thing it's not a U.S. Presidential election year. Worlds would collide!
-
Nah, one kid is going to be our limit. Don't you think one offspring of me will be a bad enough infliction on the world? :D
I think my wife would appreciate a date night consisting of me cooking for her and giving her a massage more than any possible shows, anyway.

Hey, Sophie and Henry paid for that themselves with their milk and clothing allowance. I had nothing to do with it!
