Yes, I am indeed a left-liberal according to this. How my centrist wife puts up with me, I'll never know. Just like Carvel and Madelyn I guess.

well the overall results would have to be a bit skewed seeing as it's a on a site advocating self-government.  plus i would have to agree with harriet on the over simplification of complex issues.  i.e. no mention in the question of what are the ramification of totally legalizing drunks.  i suspect that abuse would become a bigger problem, that health care costs would rise and productivity would be lowered.

it follows that a libertarian site would oversimplify the issues, given that libertarianism itself offers some great ideas in THEORY but greatly oversimplifies reality

I guess what is amusing is the people that have taken it are far more left and middle than the national averages. I wonder if that is a product of our age, location, wealth or all three.

the right wing authoritarians are too busy planning how to rule all of us fucking around with internet quizzes to actually waste their time taking them

By the way, I got this quiz from the Robbie Fulks chatboard.

 http://www.theadvocates.org/celebrities/robbie-fulks.html (http://www.theadvocates.org/celebrities/robbie-fulks.html)

Fulks, apparently refers to himself as a libertarian, though he adds:

Ayn Rand's biography easily beats any of the books she wrote, if it's interesting books you like. I am comfortable enough with the libertarian tag, though after 9-11 an abridgment of the absolutist understanding of civil liberties was both inevitable and necessary.

I hate musicians that dabble in political issues, or even say much about them, because it transforms them immediately from dashing figures of romance to pious retards. I'd hate to rob anyone of the pleasure of my music just because he read somewhere that I voted for Reagan. Oops.

what i find interesting is the results of a more "scientific" telephone poll of 822 likely voters in 2000.  the results are still going to skewed in the favor of liberatian because of the simplicity of the questions.

"Using the same questions and scale, a Portrait of America telephone survey of 822 likely voters found 32% of American voters are centrists; 16% are libertarians; 14% are authoritarians; 13% liberal; 7% are conservative; and, 17% border one or more categories."

  http://www.theadvocates.org/library/poll-results.html (http://www.theadvocates.org/library/poll-results.html)

addendum:  I wonder what the results of this quiz would be post 9/11 with this question still in place "People should be free to come and go across borders; to live and work where they choose."

I find the number of you leaning toward the authoritarian sector of the grid a little alarming...it seems to indicate you want to be protected, and so you'd be willing to cede your freedoms for this...bah!

Like I said, maybe you are more comfortable with the government controlling things since you work for them...BUT...you can't give over so much control. I think "the people" need to stop looking at it as corporations/industry vs. government with government on our side. Government is no more on "our" side than industry. We should not think that government will protect us from the big, bad corporations to the point that we give government sooo much control. It has to be balanced. Hence, my centrist score (in this oversimplified quiz).

I'm comfortable with the goverment regulating industry, which doesn't mean controlling it.

I'll trust someone whose job it is to regulate something over someone whose job it is to make as much money as possible on most days of the week.

Other than the question about minimum wage, what other items in the quiz are about protecting us from big bad corporations?

indirectly, the business and farm subsidy question, the free trade question, the tax question, the foreign aid question...hell, in a country based on capitalism, ALL the economic questions can touch the relationship between the people, the government and corporations, actually

Regulating for the sake of regulation is dangerous.

Tariffs help corporations.  Subsidies help corporations.  The tax question was a wash, as corporations would likely have to pay more since they use the government more.

How does privatizing foreign aid help corporations?

Do tariffs really ALWAYS help corporations? Wouldn't it depend on the tariff?

Subsidies help corporations, sure, so what if someone chose "YES", they'd then be making a choice against "corporate welfare" (I guess the Libertarians threw the Farm thing in there to muck the issue up, since subsidizing farms and subsidizing business has different implications)

One could say that privatizing foreign aid would help businesses because they could do more business in the countries that they are aiding, however, the government gives contracts to private companies in these efforts, anyway.

Hmmm, I'm not really sure what someone would have chosen in this quiz to land in the "authoritarian" netherworld of the lower region of the grid, actually.

A little boy goes to his dad and asks, "What are Politics?"

Dad says, "Well son, let me try to explain it this way:

 1. I'm the head of the family, so call me the President.
 2. Your mother is the administrator of the money, so we call her the Government.
 3. We're here to take care of your needs, so we'll call you the People.
 4. The nanny, we'll consider her the Working Class.
 5. And your baby brother, we'll call him the Future.

Now think about that and see if it makes sense."

So the little boy goes off to bed thinking about what dad has said.

Later that night, he hears his baby brother crying, so he gets up to check
on him. He finds that the baby has severely soiled his diaper.

So the little boy goes to his parent's room and finds his mother sound
asleep. Not wanting to wake her, he goes to the nanny's room. Finding
the door locked, he looks in the peephole and finds his father in bed with
the nanny. He gives up and goes back to bed.

The next morning, the little boy says to his father, "Dad, I think I
understand the concept of politics now.

"The father says, "Good, son, tell me in your own words what you think
 politics is all about."

The little boy replies, "The President is screwing the Working Class,
while the Government is sound asleep. The People are being ignored and the
 Future is in deep shit."

Tariffs protect corporations from having to compete with foreign competition.

The vast majority of farm subsidies go to corporate farms.

Isn't the line between "foreign" and "domestic" corporations often blurry?

I didn't realize the subsidies were to corporate farms...I guess I had this vision of an old-fashioned farm...that's a good point. Yuck! I don't like corporate farms!
