Title: Guster Question
Post by: sonickteam2 on July 14, 2003, 01:10:00 pm
I have a question about a sh ow that is supposedly on 9/1 at GW Smith Center but possibly for students only. Has anyone heard of this show, its on thier site, and pollstar, but not on Ticketmaster.  Is there anyway a couple nonstudents could get into a show like that?

its probably for their fall fest. i went to gw. and generally labor day weekend, afte the first full week of classes, is fall fest. they have a free concert for the students sponsored by the university's program board. and yes, unless you have a gw id, you ain't gettin' in.

actually, on the other thread he said he liked Steve Wynn, and you have still not clarified what folk pop duos there are out there, I don't think you know what you are talking about, unless Spin has done a feature about folk pop duos, they were probably too busy discussing Kenna, Radiohead, Mars Volta and The Music

Best line I've heard in a long time...In the movie Laurel Canyon 40something record producer played by Frances McDormand, when her son mentiones Spin Magazine, responds disgustedly, "I do NOT read Spin."

well, some would say that exit clov, www.exitclov.com, (http://www.exitclov.com,) was a folk pop duo. now they're a foursome and not folk. And they're pretty damn good. (shamless plug) But Rhett's still elitist trash....

Actually, it's sonicteam2 who is the elitist trash. I was quoting him directly from the "shows this weekend." If my comment sounded retarded, elitist, whatever, it's because I got it from sonic.
    That said, Guster still sucks.

An album for all you folk pop lovers...

 http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/gband1 (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/gband1)

These "People's Choice Winners" thrilled thousands of listeners at Garageband.com.

Sometimes you just need a good song. These 10 tracks know how to say it in a song. Hints of James Taylor, John Mayer, Emmylou Harris, Tracy Chapman, blend with the modern sounds of Alanis Morrisette and Beck inside these truly original and inspiring works.

Garageband.com is dedicated to independent music. Since 1999, twelve bands discovered by Garageband have been signed by major recording labels, and one has already gone double-platinum!

That description of folk pop does not really remind me of the Fruit Bats, allmusic.com similar artists are - The Possibilities, Holopaw, Radar Bros., The Shins, ESP Summer, The Polyphonic Spree, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci

Can I just clarify, in the proper thread, that i DO NOT like Guster.  I never have, and never will.

It was simply a question because a Guster fan-friend of mine is coming to visit over Labor Day and i was thinking it would be nice to take her to see them.

   geeeeeez.

No need to get defenseive over a band you like (or don't like). I like Dasboard Confessional, who is ruefully hated by the vast majority of the board. Don't hide from your true self sonic...release yourself from the bonds of the status quo.

Yeah, I think guster kinda sucks too though.

Yeah, i definitely dont like Guster. I just think people were taking it a little too far, and not in just one thread, so i figured i would let it be known that i dont like Guster. In fact, I dont like much "folk" music at all. which is why i was ribbing Rhett about liking shitty pop folk bands.

I think the more popular the band is, the more they suck....apparently. cause I thought the Mars Volta was being talked up at one point.

And i read Q not Spin, get it right...besides, who listens to a Canadians opinions anyway?

So if Guster is sucky folk pop, then what are the Jayhawks, and is it reasonable that i dont like Guster, but I really like the Jayhawks?

From what I can tell, Guster is more from the collegiate/frat Dave Matthews school of music, whereas Jayhhawks are more alt-country/70's rock...unless you're talking about Smile or Sound of Lies, maybe they are in the sucky folk pop category.

Sound of Lies is not folky at all, and IMHO is a damn fine album.  Closer to Power Pop.  Smile is crap though.

I've known of them since 1994. I still don't understand how tickets to their last show at the club cost $25. I mean how did they gain so much notariety?

That's a $25 show.... For $40 I'll pass seeing as I would only go strictly for the entertainment, and not musical stimulation.
