i hope soon.
though, i must say. the smell of smoke mixed with whatever perfume i was wearing the night i was at the club that sticks on my clothes through a couple of washes IS quite nostalgic.
but not getting lung cancer is a better trade off. i 'd say.

It's gonna be harder to light up blunts at the club without the staph noticing.

clearly I meant January 1, 2007

Drugs are bad, m'kay. (http://www.mcnamee.co.uk/josh/drugs.swf)

The positive effects of smoking:
* Nicotine increases alertness. This may enhance concentration, thinking and learning. This may be a benefit to people with schizophrenia whose illness or medication leads to cognitive problems.
* Nicotine can help relaxation, and it can also reduce negative feelings such as anxiety, tension and anger. So smoking may help people with mental illness deal with stressful situations.
* Nicotine might have an antidepressant effect. Nicotine stimulates dopamine production in part of the brain and so may help negative symptoms of schizophrenia, such as lack of motivation, lack of energy and flat mood.
* Nicotine may reduce positive symptoms, such as hallucinations for a short period.
* There is some evidence to suggest that smoking is associated with reduced levels of antipsychotic induced Parkinsonism.
* Smoking can help to relieve boredom and provide a framework for the day.
* Smoking can improve social interaction, something that may be of particular benefit to people with negative symptoms.

i don't fucking even understand why people even start in the first place, with all the knowledge today about it's negative affects on your health; and especially knowledge of how hard it is to quit.
i know that most people don't think that it is going to happen to them, but it isn't rocket science.
i view a lot of smokers as completely ignorant about their health, and what they are doing to their bodies...
-
i welcome the change. it'll be nice to have another venue i can go to and not completely reek of smoke when i come home.
the world does indeed revolve around me.

On a number of occassions.
BTW, I got a pretty cool postcard from SIGIT with them on front. They sent it wishing me Merry Christmas. I thought that was really cool of them especially considering I think they are a bunch of Muslims. Great guys!

Youbebetty, everyone takes calculated risks, but in their calculation is the thought "it can't happen to ME." This includes not just smoking, but also that other dangerous pursuit, sex, which of course can kill you or get someone knocked up, no matter how many precautions you take. Driving is incredibly dangerous yet most of us do it. So it's not ignorance -- most people know what the risks are -- it's irrationality.
Jaguar, that's cool about SIGIT. I got several Christmas greetings from Indonesians who were Muslims. One of them, who wasn't sure what religion I was (I'm not a religion, but they don't understand that, so I always answered with some vague answer) sent me a Rosh Hashanah card!
-
Here is a case where the teenager is wiser than the adult.
The odds of dying from being a regular smoker are probably astronomically higher than dying from a lifetime of protected, "safer" sex. And I'm bet most people, even smokers, would agree that the payoff from sex is much higher than the payoff from smoking.
While we're at it, why don't we just argue that weed is as dangerous as heroin, because they're both illegal drugs.

What if you went into a roomful of 1000 people, and half of them were FARTING? Would you not feel like complaining?

i dont think so. perhaps some people just like to complain more than others.

Would those pesky anti-Bush war protestors be among those people who like to complain more than others?

Well, I view people who smoke in public to be completely obnoxious. There; I said it.
So, a lot of you are probably going to hate me due to the fact that I said what I did, but I stand by what I said very firmly.
Secondhand smoke is dangerous to others, and it makes me want to puke when I see smokers blowing it into young childrens faces.
Not me...I have plenty of friends that smoke, and yes; sometimes I willingly surround myself with them, for their company. I'm not going to hate you because you smoke. I just personally feel that it should only be legal in the privacy of your own home.
(Farting, too; but at least it doesn't add to known risks of lung cancer...yet...)
-
My grandmother smoked for about 60 years. She finally quit. Got breast cancer and died within the year. On her death bed said, "I should have kept on smoking, I wasted a year not smoking."
yea, yea, so she maybe got the cancer from smoking, so what, she lived a very healthy life until she died at 85.
Good for all you non-smokers and people who hate it. You're right. But I'm more fun. :D It's common knowledge that smokers are smarter and have more fun. Go to any party; the smokers standing outside are having better conversations and laughing more than the risk-averse non-smokers inside. :p :p
-
See, I'm not risk-averse. I'm just smart.

we would have to care before we hated you! and personally, i am a LONG way from that!
do you get this irate about people that speed on the highway? surely thats just as dangerous as second hand smoke!!!

-
yes, actually.

Cigarette smoking probably reduces the general level of fart gas, since the prevalence of all those open flames will help burn off the methane.

This has never been established to the satisfaction of science, despite numerous medical studies. What's the source of your new info?
Are you worried about carbon dioxode levels and melting Antarctic ice sheets too..?

Where does your deep distrust of climate change come from given that you spend 24 hours a day looking at bizarre websites?

well, there are studies going on at uc-davis about the effect of methane released by cows (either through farts or gas released while chewing cud) on the atmosphere of the central valley of california. initial studies show that methane released from cows is a larger contributor of smog than car exhaust. so, in fact, yes, farting (and the methane released) does contain known risks.

Wouldn't everyone going vegetarian mean less dead cows and therefore more cow methane in the air?

I don't think there would be as many cows born if farmers weren't deliberately breeding them as quickly as possible for meat production.

course, without cows there would be no milk, cheese, butter, ice cream, jello (mmm, gelatin), etc. the cows in the central valley are mainly dairy cows anyway, i think.
-
Yes, I grew up on a dairy farm, and am well aware of the products that result from said business.
