I was sat in the car suffering through "Fix you" on the radio and it got me thinking to myself.....why do you not get this band, when they seem to be the be all and end all of music at the moment.
Now, I don't hate the band....I don't even dislike the band.....I don't love the band, and I don't even like the band. In fact, they leave me absolutely stone cold. Whenever their songs are on I have absolutely no desire to sing along, when the song is over I am left completely empty, without emotion or opinion one way or the other....and I realised that's it...that's the point! Coldplay are "cold play", and so that's the perfect name for them. I would rather listen to a band I absolutey can't stand, so at the end of it I can think, "well, that was crap!" and feel alive because I had an emotion and opinion about what I'd just listened to.
Another band I had a similar experience with was Radiohead....I saw them at the 930 a few years ago, the show was okay, worth the price of admission, but that was it. By the time I'd driven home I'd pretty much forgotten who it was I went to see.
R.E.M....now that's a band I just can't stand, but at least I sing along to the chorus "Don't go back to Rockville" so I get something out of their music.
Coldplay??? Nothing!!!!

Well, it's funny that you mention those 3 because both Radiohead and Coldplay talk all the time about how they were influenced by REM.
And it's funny, because most people who are into Coldplay will say they love the emotion and passion they hear. Just the opposite of what you get (which is nothing).
I LOVED Colplay when I first heard them back in 2000. I loved their last record, Rush of Blood. I felt the emotion. The latest release....I feel like you do. Blah.
Anyway, nice take on the name thing.

nice music, not really my taste, but nice music. does nothing for me lyrically

I saw them at Austin City Limits Music Festival couple weeks ago. I am not a big Coldplay fan and wasn't really looking forward to them closing the entire festival out, but I have to admit, they impressed the hell out of me as a live band. Either my expectations were really low or they're just that good. I won't be buying their CDs anytime soon though.

i have seen them twice. once in a pretty small venue and again at the horror show what was the nissan show. they are very good live, but that new album is just brrrroke. i question whether i would see them again. i sure as shit wouldn't see them or anyone else, save elvis, at nissan ever again. i can really see where these coldplay haters/"have nothing for them types" are coming from when i listen to that new album. i also thought, at this latest nissan show, that i thought martin's hopping around was silly. i little hopping is fine. a lot of hopping takes on a whirling dervishness quality. enough about hopping and coldplay.
speaking of bigger bands, i have lost it for, do people really like these last couple o' foo albums? i have no use for them anymore. to the point where, having seen them at the black cat 4 or 5 years and having been thoroughly raaaawked by them, i didn't even attempt to buy tix to see them at 9:30 on sunday. you feeling me?

Agree. Great live band. Great first 2 albums. Terrible 3rd album. I saw them in baltimore a few years back...One of my favorite shows Ive been to. I was in the pit at Nissan and it pretty much left me cold...(hey I guess that name works)

Also I have always found the lyrics to be a bit cheesy but with this 3rd album its almost a joke how trite and simplistic they are. I dont expect Shakespeare but it sounds like a 5th grader wrote them...

exhibit a - lyrics to "what if?"
What if there was no lie
Nothing wrong, nothing right
What if there was no time
And no reason, or rhyme
What if you should decide
That you don't want me there by your side
That you don't want me there in your life
What if I got it wrong
And no poet or song
Could put right what I got wrong
Or make you feel I belong
What if you should decide
That you don't want me there by your side
That you don't want me there in you life
Ooh ooh-ooh, that's right
Let's take a breath, try to hold it inside
Ooh ooh-ooh, that's right
How can you know it, if you don't even try
Ooh ooh-ooh, that's right
Every step that you take
Could be your biggest mistake
It could bend or it could break
That's the risk that you take
What if you should decide
That you don't want me there in your life
That you don't want me there by your side
Ooh ooh-ooh, that's right
Let's take a breath, try to hold it inside
Ooh ooh-ooh, that's right
How can you know when you don't even try
Ooh ooh-ooh, that's right
i mean, come on. CORNY!
maybe they've all sounded this corny to some people. i'm no singer-songwriter, never will be, but that is fookin' shite man.

Great first album. Good live show. Decent second album. Crappy third album.
