Lord, it looks gorgeous outside. Looks like perfect Ft. Reno weather, but I'm not familiar with the lineup:
CANYON, GARLAND OF HOURS,
THE FATALES
Any thoughts?

Dude, but LOOK AT THAT HAIR -- so supple, so shiny, so full, so New Jersey mob wife!
-
Hey, we're not being helpful at all! I know a couple folks mentioned Canyon as a possible opener for Idlewild, so someone must know about them. Alas, I can give no guidance, though I may head out just because it's so nice today.
-
Oh no, Bags, Michael Bolton was VERY helpful. He reminded me I need to condition tonight. But I'm with you--it's so nice out, I might risk an evening of no-talent ass clowns.
-
i like canyon...alt-coutryish/rock stuff. ive seen them a couple time and they put on a good show. i might head out for the show myself.
-
it is a nice day, but man. those bands are baaad.
-
why do you think canyon is so baaad?
-

every band has to start somewhere. Fort Reno is a showcase for local talent and is free. What are you going to do, ask for a refund.
I can understand being disparaging after seeing a show, "here is 25 cents go and phone your mum and tell her you will never be a rock star" And I can understand slagging off a band if you paid good money to see them and they were bad.
I dont see the point on ragging on inexperienced local bands playing Fort Reno, that is what its all about. And for what its worth from what I remembr I think canyon are Ok.

except most Jersey mob wives have more hair on their chests...

In my opinion....
Canyon kind of suck.
They aren't that bad but not worth a walk across the street.
I'll stay home and file my nails and play some good CDs.
-
I say go. It'll be a beautiful evening and you may end up liking one of the bands.
For a band that allegedly sucks, Canyon sure seems to get a lot of gigs. I'm tempted to see them some time just to see why they suck.
-
Go for it. Maybe you'll turn into a big Alt-Country/Canyon fan.
And as you say, it is a very nice evening. Much, much closer for you too to take a chance.
-
Fatales were alright. Walked out during Canyon, pissed on my elementary school with the boys. Paige was there, she left during Canyon too. I thought the slide guitar would be enthralling, but no dice.
-
In my opinion, the only band that I liked was the Fatales. I'm sorry, but the Garland of Hours or whatever's female singer had the most flat, horrible voice. Sure she could play the piano and the cello - which was cool, but I mean I could have sung better than she did! Canyon didn't interest me as much as I had hoped, but I tried to give them a fair shot. However, I was just let down, bought a cremesicle and went on home.

you say that based on who you saw at the show last night? are your black rimmed glasses out of focus? when i hear "emo" i think of the kids who wear beaded bracelets, tight dickies, hair in their eyes and care bears t-shirts all while accessorizing themselves with a bad attitude and arrogance....
i didn't see many of those people last night.
more a crowd of older (by no means old though) more low key people.. i did see a few grandmas too. ;)

agreed. Fort Reno tends to be the awesome people capital of the east coast, in my humble opinion. There's definitely no better scene in DC.
-
that is what i mean...and i did see people like that. guess we werent sitting near each other. most ft. reno shows are like that...
-
What I love the most about Ft. Reno is just how eclectic the crowds are... it isn't so discriminating and even at times cut throat (I've been to shows where people are absolutely brutal to each other!) and the atmosphere is just so great... Woo Ft. Reno!
-
save for those indieestros who tell people to sit down. at least they say please though.
" 'scuze me, I'd like to get by now..."

Anyone have any thoughts on Velvet or The Deep Six?
-
Well Velvet's this crummy little hipster hangout that will have a good band once in a blue moon; haven't heard of the other place. Where is it located?

Whew, why the harshness over Velvet Lounge?? I know, I know, Iota's like the best place to see a band ever. But Velvet fills a niche as well.
What I'm wondering is if I should get to Galaxy Hut more....

Yeah, I wonder if I'm missing a lot of interesting new bands by not going to more GH shows. (It's my favorite bar in VA/DC area, regardless.)
-
Anybody know anything about the bands playing tonight -- particularly Velvet and The Deep Six?

I've seen the Deep Six. I enjoyed.
-
I agree with Paige that The Fatales were the only band worth listening to. I thought they drew inspiration from perhaps Interpol, Radiohead, and even The Strokes. I actually spoke to them afterwards and they mentioned that they were missing their bass player who couldnt make it from NYC.
-
because of the bad weather forecast, D Plan will apparently be updating www.dismembermentplan.com (http://www.dismembermentplan.com) about whether or not they will be playing tonight
right now it says
Down to the last show at home...check this space for updates on the rain vs. Fort Reno .
-
Thanks, Pollard. I was wondering about that myself after watching the weather this morning. 60% chance of rain between this evening.

don't know about you all but i'm doing the "no rain between 6 and 10pm dance" so dplan can play at fort reno. i saw them in philly on sat. bit bittersweet as soon there will be no regular touring from the guys.

Latest from D Plan website:
07/28/2003
The word on Fort Reno now is: if it's raining lightly we can still play, if it's storming or lightning, we can't play. Showtime is 7:15pm, we're on at 8pm.
-
Doesn't it strike you funny that the D-plan only plan to have their last domestic show in DC... the last show will be in.... Japan?
-
That's it. I'm calling my trip to see d-plan off for tonight. That radar pic is too threatening considering I was going to introduce my 4 month old to live rock music.

quitter! brave the rain! it will be fun! and i bet fewer people will be there, i.e. closer to the stage action!
well, if you have a youngin, i see where you don't want to go out.
wait.. are you the cool dad that is covered in tattoos and lets his little daughter run around in the dirt? if you are, she's adorable. :)
-
tatoos are for loosers.... so no... it's not me... and I wouldn't be acclimating my 4 month old to live music tonight if I was... and another thing, after attending the field day fiasco in june and braving no less than 50 inches of rain in 10 hours, I have had my fill for quite some time.
-
Ah, what other message boards bring you live weather feeds? :D
The 9:30 board rules! ;)
-
ooooo man! Looking at our 9:30 message board doppler at 8:00 doesn't look rosey down at Ft. Reno. So did the show go on?
-
so did d-plan end up playing? i was down there for the aquarium and left after travis came on stage and said they were going to wait to see if the rain was letting up...we stood there for a little while in the rain arguing about whether we should stay or go..we eventually left..

dude... i'm sorry you left. after the skies opened up and the rain poured down (not that bad actually!! annoying but fun)... they managed to squeeze in an hour's worth of good d-plan tuneage.... wow. got to love them. they apologized and said they'd definitely come back and play a club show to make up for the lost time and the weather tonight. they were looking superfine and sounded great. what fabulous energy..
hightlight of the show (well, two): Travis saying "i ain't no ho! i receive payments through paypal for any services rendered" after some kids threw some money onto the stage
During the beginning of "You are Invited," someone was holding up a "Very Sexy" sign and in the middle of singing, travis kept laughing and smiling and could bearly keep a straight face. "you cant put it up with the drum machine!"
-
It was a very good time...withstanding the elements only added to the goodness. And the setlist was splendid...D Plan Get Rich was the highlight off the top o' me head.
P.S. To clairify, it was a "Ben is Very Sexy" sign that was held up during You Are Invited, and as Ben is the drummer, it seemed to be odd timing... :)
P.P.S. Paige, we make good pirates...I've had worse weather on the Spanish Main arrrrr.
-
Yeah, we got over there at 9:00 and caught about 40 minutes of Dismemberment. It was good -- but I can understand if you left -- it was coming down in BUCKETS right around 8:00. It didn't seem possible to hold a show even if it stopped raining, but after a couple margaritas at Guapo's, we were leaving and it really did seem nice out. So we headed over and were very lucky.
But here's my question -- a friend was with me and his comment was, "I forget how awful indie crowds are." We were in the back, and from our vantage point you couldn't see a person moving, much less kinda 'concert dancing.' I'm sure right up front it was great, but 80% of the crowd just kinda stands there with hands in their pockets. What's the deal with that?
I was in back dancing and enjoying. And they're playing agian in about six weeks!!! Ya-hoo.
PS, their drummer KICKS ASS. Wow.
-
grrr...i told my boyfriend that the weather was going to get better...but he kept pissing and moaning about how he didn't like standing in the rain...oh well, sounds like it was a good time
-
I stayed just long enough to get soaked through, but didnt really feel it was worth once they said they would play another show. Somebody who stayed told me the sound was awful, not true?
-
I'm sorry I missed the set. I got completely soaked, saw no one and headed home. I'm glad to hear there will be a club show to make up for it!

well, i think there would have been more dancing if it hadnt' had been hurricane-like conditions before the set. i was in the mood to dance, but anytime my legs moved i was cold and sticky (obviously).. there were some major dancers, but i guess that the weather put a damper on that.
and yeah, their drummer does rule! love him. wait, love the whole band!
-
the drummer's name isn't ben. its joe. i think the highlight was "one to many blows to the head."

my personal highlight was "Gyroscope" -- it's my favorite of all time.
-
Agreed. I braved the elements, but I at least was smart enough to bring an umbrella...not that it helped. And while I am highly excited for one last club show, man, that was a blast last night. I can't even remember if I've ever heard "One Too Many Blows to the Head" live before.
Walkman...I'm pretty sure I saw you over to the right side of the stage, under a plastic tarp I think. I would've stopped by to say hi, but as I was miserable waiting for them to play, I felt it better to stand still and sulk.

I'm no sound engineer, but I thought they sounded GREAT, especially considering the conditions and a rushed sound check. I tend to love shows when there's been rain because everyone feels a little crazy and the bands tend to cut loose. Really great energy last night, I thought. Glad they're going to do another one, though.

Yup, that was me. I hope we can meet again under better circumstances.
-
I'm no soundman either, but everything sounded great to me. Their drummer does kick ass!! It was nice to see how many people either stuck it out or came back. How many people you think were there? I estimated 400. That may be a bit high, but it was a big crowd!

I thought the energy was good but the sound was so/so. I'm not complaining but the vocals were very soft last night, and the sound was just not that great over all. I think they did an amazing job considering no sound check and there was standing water on the stage. However I don't think it was anywhere close to one of their best shows. I'm just glad that they are going to do another club show; I never thought that Fort Reno should be their last show.

I think that might be a pretty good estimate, the place looked empty when it was raining hard. But when they came back out to play people came out of the wood work. There was pretty much solid people from the front of the stage to the sound truck.
-
they did the song at the bowery in new york and also at tla in philly last week.
was rather surprised to see them open with "the city". that's usually a mid set or later song.
and i also agree that sound wasn't great, esp with the vocals, but considering everything, i didn't really mind.

There was a lot of video footage being taken, is there a DVD or some other video coming out of the Plan or better yet something about Fort Reno?!
-
no, kids just tape shows to use as emo currency.
-
A friend just pointed me to the Fort Reno website...Apparently, the Apes are not playing tonight. No clue why, although I was told the singer is on his honeymoon? Very odd...
-
hope the weather holds out for my friends in Zero Beat.

They announced that one of the band members eloped. So yet again I am thwarted in my attempts to see The Apes... At least it was a good excuse.
-
I missed the first band's set, heard the last half of Tuohy's last song, and saw the last two bands full sets.
I was really impressed with the last two bands. Spirit Animals and The Max Levine Ensemble were both a fun time. Granted, they were both pop punk, but they played it well.
Anyone else there last night? Kurosawa, I believe I saw you there. Didn't want to interrupt you and your friend though.
-
i was there. it was ok. i liked how there was some more energy in the bands, but it was so humid and those dancing kids really bothered me.
-
I take it you didn't see the dancing Mom in the melee of dancing kids.
-
I saw my friends Zero Beat play first, thought it was good. But I'm biased. I thought the sound was much better than previous shows, no broadcast signals and such. I saw 1.5 songs of the second band and decided to ditch. It was such a nice night I didn't want to ruin it. Anyone know what language that girl was singing in? The music wasn't awful, but the vocals was so close to it. The kids loved it!

i didn't see a dancing mom. but i saw a lot of dancing sweaty kids. it was annoying only because of the sweat that flew off onto me, and their over enthusiasm was just not appreciated. dancing is funtimes, by all means, dance. however, don't throw your huge body mass into mine when yours is covered in sweat and other things.

Wonder if the show will go on tonight. Don't think I can handle another drenching.

The Apes will be playing with Q And Not U at the Black Cat on 9-5.
