Hello all.
As most of you know, Smackie's moving to San Francisco on August 1 with Smackette. We are planning a little going away happy hour/cocktail hour next Friday, July 25th to say goodbye. Some of you have already been invited because I had your email address, others were not because the forum now uses private messages instead of email addresses and I didn't get the chance to write your email address down before the upgrade.
Therefore, if you would like more information, please send me a private message from the link above or email me at vansmack@msn.com.
Cheers and I hope most of you can make it.

I will go, but only if you promise to drink your own body volume in Guiness.
-
I was going to go but now scientist markie wk is going I think I'll pass. ;)
Are you still going to the Rovers game next Wed?

Yes, and I think we should share a pint at the Lucky bar if you're red lining in or at the capital lounge if you blue or orange line in. If you're driving, the you name the place.

I'm thinking 5:30-6ish. And depending on the outcome of the Duff deal, I may be wearing my Irish national jersey (since they delayed the damn black kit!).

You know Duff didn't fly out with the team right?

Yes, but he checked his bags in and nearly boarded the plane before being told to stay in England. He can come out before Wednesday or catch up with United while he's out here. ;)

I like your thinking. Number 7 would be a good number for him don't you think? He may even get to knob a spice girl too!!!
I read that Fergie was holding out for him until next year when he thought he could get him for much less.....maybe they'll shell out the dosh form him early rather than lose him to Chelsea, which he does not want to go to. The boy doesn't want to move to London, which I can't say I blame him...shite beer, cockney's and Aussies! ;)

He won't wear 7, but with gigsy in 11, he'll have to find a new number. He wears 9 for the national team so maybe he will choose that.

Smackie...strong indication Goofy-fecker will be introduced as the new signing for Barca on Monday (they're welcome to him) so it looks like United will be turning their attentions onto stealing Duff from Chelsea.....I just may have to go to church on Sunday if you know what I mean!!

But that's the beauty of Catholicism, you can go to confession right before you die and still get into heaven. And extreme amounts of tidings never hurt either.
Anyhow, Ron gone, bring on Duff!

So, Ronaldinho ended up in Barcelona, I hope he is that good. Finally, it looks we might get out of recent years' misery. What is Manchester United doing with all the money from Beckham's transfer to Madrid?

Congrats on improving your team. At the price, I don't think Rono improved ManU like he would Barca so I'm glad we didn't pay the fee. However, if Ronho goes for 21M pounds, Real got the deal of the century for Becks.
As for the cash, here's what makes the deal even sweeter for Real: it's £5.2m pounds now, £12.24 over the next four years, the remaining £7m are conditional upon Real Madrid's performances in the UEFA Champions League. So if United beats Real, they actually lose money on the Beckham deal. I'm sorry, what ManU money are you referring to? Man U are looking like the biggest fucking idiots right now and they had better make the Duff deal soon.
-
Hey Mankie.
We lost Duff too. He signed with Chelsea. Unbelievable.
-
Vieira maybe??
I think Rohnaldino is about 15mil overpriced at the money they paid for him....what has he done at club level in both Brasil and France? SQUAT! All his success has been with the national team, and my GOD! I would look good playing on that team. At worst he's carried by the rest of the team and at best he's the Esa Tikkanen of football, he makes no effort unless it's a vital and important game.
My feelings are that Barcelona bought him out of ego damage control, they lost Beckham so had to sign just any big name player. Sorry Barcelona but thats how I feel, they did United a big favor IMHO.
As for who do United go for now? They really don't NEED anyone....and as for Chelsea, I just think that's going to be a huge train wreck by seasons end...The NY Rangers of the premier league.

Ronaldinho = Esa Tikkanen - that's great! there's about 5 people on this board who would get that!
Yes, Chelsea is a train wreck waiting to happen, but Man U must keep Veron now or we will struggle mightily in Europe without a replacement for Beckham and losing Veron.
I'm as convinced as you are that Ole will fill the right side perfectly in the premiere league, but with Keano getting old and Diego Forlan still unproven for an entire season, can United really rely on Ruud alone to score 30-40 goals a season? I don't think so. I'd like to see one more proven mid-fielder or striker move to United.
Oh and as for Kewell, serve's you right! couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.
-
Kewell the tool! Che-he-he-he!
We signed Bellion remember, I don't know anything about him but Fergie has been after him for a long time and the last player Fergie pursued like that was Ruud!!!
I would like to see Keano fill in as player/assistant coach for one season then take over as assistant full time next year, then be prepped to take over the reigns when Fergie steps down, but I doubt it will happen.

speaking of signings. . .how about federov to the ducks???
btw, how late do you plan on being out on friday smackie?? i can't get there until around 8:30 or 9.

No offense to smackie intended, but Federov has won his last Stanley Cup.

Oh yes, I forgot to tell you about that. A member of his representation called me Thursday to tell me about that (he knew how devasted I was about Kariya/Selanne). I had to keep it a secret though. I'm stoked about it. Federov and Vaclav Propsal, I'm impressed with the management doing something.
Oh, and Mankie I love you but no Caps fans can talk to me about winning Stanley Cups. Ever.

I wasn't taking the piss, I just think that the Ducks playoff run was a major over-achievement, once in a career thing, so Federov making the switch there has pretty much sealed his fate as far as finals go.... I was cheering for them as if I was a native born CA born native.
The Caps on the other hand are the leagues greatest under-achievers...well, apart from the current Rangers squad that is.

And that's something a Caps fan would know about so I will note your opinion and move on. The Federov deal can be likened to the Jagr deal in some circles, I'm just hoping that this isn't the case.

Even Jagr under-achieved after he came to Washington..it must be the "Capital Curse" or something.
-
well. . jagr excels when there is a better player with him. look when he was with the pens, he joins up with lemieux and they win back-to-back stanley cups. . .lemieux retires, the pens still make the playoffs and beat the caps every year, but no stanley cup finals. . .lemieux comes back and has one relatively healthy year and they make it to the wales, errr, eastern conference finals. as good as oates and/or bonda is/was, jagr needs someone who is far better than him to make him look good.
-
Oates would never have worked well with Jagr....Oates's talent lies in taking control of the ice by slowing the game down, Jagr's skill's shine by speeding the game up.
Bondra is pretty friggin fast, maybe they'll gel better next season, as long as Jagr doesn't start sulking like he can be prone to do. He's a great player but I'm not really a fan of his.

Looks like we missed a good one, Mankie:
DC UNITED BEAT BLACKBURN ROVERS ON PENALTY KICKS
Associated Press
Jul. 23, 2003 11:02 p.m.
WASHINGTON (AP) â?? Substitute Brian Carroll tied the game in the 85th minute and D.C. United beat Blackburn Rovers 6-5 on penalty kicks following a 1-1 tie in an exhibition game Wednesday night.
The first five shooters for each team converted their penalty kicks before the sixth shooters - D.C.'s Brandon Prideaux and Blackburn's Andy Todd - were unsuccessful.
United's Dema Kovalenko sent a low, hard shot past goalkeeper David Yelldell before Rovers defender Nils-Eric Johansson kicked wide right, giving D.C. United the victory.
Yelldell came into the game in the 75th minute in relief of Brad Friedel, the U.S. starter at last year's World Cup. Friedel made five saves.
Kasey Keller, Friedel's backup, played for the United States on Wednesday night in its 2-1 overtime loss to Brazil in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean.
Blackburn's Andy Cole scored off as header for a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute.
The tying goal came after Yelldell tried to clear a ball near the left post. D.C.'s Ali Curtis slid to block the attempt, and the ball bounced to Carroll, who had entered in the 65th minute.
The match at RFK Stadium drew 9,452. Blackburn is preparing for the start of the Premier League season on Aug. 16.

Mank,
Finally saw the match last night (after my "chores" were done) and they looked great. took advantage of nearly every opportunity and Ole gunnar was brilliant in Becks replacement. He set up the first goal, scored the third, and just to show him off, Fergie moved Ole to the left side after Giggsy was replaced by Bellion and Ole nearly set-up Bellion for another from the left. I'm going to like watching Ole play the entire match.
-
Not bragging about my knowledge of the reds here smackie (okay, I am)...but I think if you go deep into the archives of this board you'll find more than a few comments that I've made praising Ole and wondering why he's a bench warmer...and didn't I say in the Dubliner that we really don't need another striker because we've got Ole!! huh, huh, huh? ;)
Is smackette speaking to you yet?
-

I'm just reaffirming you're already brilliant remarks, my friend. Last night after he scored I jumped around and repeated the "and Solksjaer has won the European Cup for Manchester United...Manchester United Rule Europe...the Munich players are on their knees...they don't know what's hit them...Manchester's hit them!" which got a smile out of Smackette and she's finally talking to me again.
-
When I got home last night the brother-in-law and his family had arrived, so there they are, My missus, the bro'in law and his wife, sat at the table sipping on the old booze chatting away. I opened the fridge door to grab some water and was greeted by a shelf full of the old mad apple. "Oh dear" I thought to myself, "here we go again"...and I was right! :D
Are you going to make any United games with the move and all?
-
Last night was the first night in a little over a week that I didn't get completely drunk, though I suspect that I'll catch back up in no time tonight. I feel all the better for it this morning.
I have now moved myself right out of both coasts for United. I had that ticket to LA in case we were back before the 27th and had tickets to Philly in case were still here on the 3rd and as it turns out I leave the East on the 2nd thus missing every opportunity to see United in the States.
The only saving grace is that I get to watch the Philly game with my United friends in LA who I haven't seen in years, but that's hardly the same as seeing them live.
The good news is the first time I see United will still be at Old Trafford someday, which makes sense in a really bizaar kind of way.

When you do...be sure to pay your respects at the Munich clock, and take a credit card with high limit because the souvineir shop is unbeleivable.

You can get those little soccerball keychains, and "I Love Soccer" t-shirts and Umbro shorts. Pretty hot stuff. Don't forget to snag the soccerball candy corn.

I was thinking more of the Manchester United bed-sheet and quilt set with matching United curtains and bedside lamp would be more Smackies speed.

Actually, I've had to relinquish control over decorating the bedroom due to my recent absences - there goes the quilt and bedsheets. So I get the office which as a man I can do a lot with and yes, there will be United paraphanelia everywhere. I was thinking of doing the Jeff Agoos type display of Jerseys from the sports section of a recent Wash Post.

The picture above doesn't show Mankie's favorite poster, which he has affixed on the ceiling above his bed:

Think he shaves or waxes?

Beckham is great, no doubt...but this man is my favorite United player...and oh, look, he's just kick the piss out of a Manchester City player!

I thought about it but had already copied the photo so couldn't be arsed changing it. Anyway, weren't the Wedding Present around more than 3 years ago, so most board members would never have heard of them.

Veron to Chelsea? What is going on between him and Manchester United? I consider him one of the top 5 players in the world. Wish we had the money.
By the way, Kluivert wasn't allowed to enter the US and was sent back to Barcelona.

I do agree Veron is talented but he's not a good fit for United...I think he would be better suited heading back to Italy or Spain. I have a funny feeling United have a huge transfer in the works so are making room both financially and in the squad...Raul maybe?
I heard about the Kluivert thing, had to do with the fatal car accident he was involved in so he's a convicted felon or something....like one more felon in the USA will make any difference.
