Missed the openers; Secret Machines were awesome, as expected... Kings of Leon okay.  It was a really odd crowd...half rockin' out/half stone-still statues...Here's a non-music story:  The back bar was "seized" by the Secret Service so the Bush twins - Jenna and Barbara - could have a private meet up with the Kings of Leon. BARFFFF. The end of the world is near.

Regulars were banned, of course, and only a handful of the twins pals were admitted.  The Secret Machine guys were visibly surprised and distressed by the news - and when I last saw them - had decided to NOT join the royal princesses.

I'm really surprised and disappointed that the 930 management would agree to that. Since the backstage area is already secured, why not escort them to the green room and leave the public spaces to us proles...evicting the regular customers who look at the back bar as part of the evening's tradition and meet-up place is just wrong. Jenna and Barb should stick with their signature preppy Georgetown clubs - and leave U Street to us liberals and poor people...WTF.

Guess they're not hanging in Crawford with daddy and mommy.  I'm pissed, and will probably be arrested shortly for unpatriotic sentiments.

the bush twins were in the club tonight, but the situation in the backbar had nothing to do with them, and they never went down there at all.  they picked up the tickets that they paid for at will call, declined any special treatment, and watched the show from the crowd like everybody else.  the secret service agents were friendly and as laid back as you could possibly be in that line of work.  all in all, their presence was undetectable.  they left before the show ended.

the band had an after show party.  that's it.  all of the people down there were their guests.

Best Forum Party Ever!

charlie, canker and the bush twins were seen dancing on the bar.

flawd pouted all night because no one would let him spin his "music"

walkonby, distance and hitman were locked in a to the death rock, sissors, paper contest to see who would have to use capitals

bags stole bob moulds karoke machine and she bearman and brennser sang, abba, replacements and sugar tunes all night long.

me i passed out and missed most of it.

You missed when sonic and rhett had a crossfire style debate over the merits of certain bands. Rhett lead with this stunning 4 minute soliloqy about the old 97s that had us all on our feet applauding until sonic responded with "you filthy slut!" we declared sonic the winner because comedy trumps logic any day.

The best part, though, was when we gave the bouncer a picture of BadSushi and told him she wasn't allowed in. Man, that was classic...

A: Van Helsing doesn't have two alcoholic daughters.

I only caught the last song by Helio Sequence (if you're going to cover a Beatles song, then it might as well be Tomorrow Never Knows).

I really liked listening to Secret Machines but they weren't really much to watch on stage. I thought they could have worked on the pacing of the setlist. It dragged in places but finished strongly.

I left after about half a dozen Kings of Leon songs. Sorry - not my taste.

I'll refrain from commenting on the special guests. Don't want the SS swooping down on me.  :)

Oh yeah - who was DJ'ing last night? I really liked what was played between Secret Machines and Kings of Leon.

Maybe someone should have told Brendan...KOL forgot to invite the Secret Machines.  I didn't make the story up; a couple of your staffers told me.  If it was a KOL private party, perhaps you could have put the NO ADMIT sign up earlier in the evening so none of us would have planned to meet up down there later...you also have a website updated daily where it might be considerate to post such notices.  I'm sure DC9 appreciated the maneuver, however...

Perhaps next time, you can give the headliner the backbar, and us proles the green room... Last time KOL played 930, they had to mingle will all us nasty fans in the backbar.  They were so put out and snotty, I'm not surprised they asked for privacy...I think they'll get lots of it eventually  :D    :D    :D

Thanks for the settig the record straight.

A few Saturdays ago at Zucchabar, Jenna Bush was there.

The newspapers are all correct: She drinks, smokes and parties a WHOLE lot.

I felt weird being in the same room with her though, I have to admit.  Also, I didn't see what the "big deal" was with her in terms of looks - I found her quite plain.

I'd rather have caught Kiefer Sutherland when he was at Zucchabar though, instead of her.  ;)

 Cheers

But it's so cathartic. Especially when it's about important things, like music and bars.

Oh yeah, one question for the KOL fans.  What's with doing tune up and sound check as your opening chords...(including "testing, testing....")...That was the most unprofessional thing I've seen on the 930 stage since Westerberg lay down behind the drum kit to nap during a solo...

I would've loved to have seen The Secret Machines again as a headliner for a lower ticket price but wasn't going to pay extra for a band that I would've left before seeing.

Why would KOL fans have an answer to your question? And weren't you a KOL fan a few months ago?

well it's a good thing i had vansmack monitoring the proceedings with Secret Webcam installed, he'll be sending me the capture later today.

Fair warning - around 2am Celeste flashed everybody, and unless you want to throw up like the rest of us, you probably want to skip that footage. I'd heard of "innie" and "outie" bellybuttons, but nipples?

Yep, I was...I heard 'em live several times, but I don't like their newest CD, their repetitive beat bores me now - and the most of their newest lyrics are bordering on misogynistic.  Honestly, I was also a little influenced by how mean they were to several fans in the backbar during their last show...

Given the choice between Secret Machines and KOL, I'd pick SM anytime...and except for the fact that I ran into some old friends I wanted to catch up with - I'd planned on leaving right after SM's set...Do I get flamed for falling out of like with a band now?  Your choice....

I think you're expecting too much/asking too much of the club.  KOL are dicks -- not the club's fault, and not the club's responsibility to make all these alternatives and notices available.  The club isn't Madison Square Garden; I'm sure anyone who had planned to meet up after the show could find each other.

I think it's hysterical that Secret Machines didn't know it was a KOL after-party.

Not mean to me.  I don't generally approach performers I don't know...The next morning I spoke with two gfriends who tried to get them to sign their CD jackets, and all four of the KOL guys blew 'em off...not a cool way to treat fans who spent money on your product... BTW:  I did like their new work  - which they were promoting heavily on their last tour...then I put it away and haven't been compelled to even load it on my iPod...want to make a big deal out of that too?

So, you did a great job of finding my older posting...it must be a really slow day for you.  Since I'm self-employed, I only screw myself when I spend so much time on the board...Do any of you more rabid hipsters here even bother going to shows anymore?

Since when is drinking, smoking, and partying hard considered normal behavior for early 20's? What a sad society we've become.

my guess is Kings of Leon rented the backbar from the club for whatever reasons... it's not like it's a public space so the club can choice to do with it what it likes.

the secret machines do a whole shitload of acid, i wouldn't be surprised if they "misinterpreted" what was going on in the backbar

Bet this will be news to Brandon...were you doing a few tabs with them?  Maybe they'll cover "malicious slander" during your first year in law school.

BTW:  That small wallet photo is now a full-sized poster hanging in the office....and they gave the small one to the secret service last night.

oh badsushi, you are so cool, referring to band members by their first names and stuff

well, your best friend told a national television audience on MTV2's Subterranean that they spent during their first few months in new york in a tiny heat-less apartment they "did a lot of acid"

Altered States: The Secret Machines' Narcotic Blis (http://www.portlandmercury.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=31520&category=22153)

"The First time you take acid, or have any kind of a psychedelic experience, from that point on you look at the world a little differently." Brandon Curtis squints his eyes a little as he says this, like a scientist subtly underscoring the tenets of his lesson. The Secret Machines, for whom young Brandon sings and plays bass and keyboards, play post-acid rock--flavored with sorbet-light touches of Flaming Lips frazzle, a never-ending motorik groove they liberated from the Germanic likes of Neu!, and the heaviest kick-drum detonations since John Bonham's gargantuan kit finally fell silent. But this isn't just about the drugs.

"Meditation is a part of it too," he continues. "We're all into self-examination, the processes of the brain. Drugs separate you from your usual point of view, offering a different perspective. It's not necessarily advisable," he grins. "But anything could throw you into that state. Like hearing a groove for 10 minutes--that alters my state every time, with or without chemicals."

"You can't underestimate the mystical impact of the things you don't understand," adds his younger brother, guitarist Benjamin. "Whether it's hearing great music, or a drone that lasts for ages, or having a 9-hour acid trip, or driving for 15 hours straight, no breaks."

Traveling is second nature for them, anyway. Brandon and Benjamin hail from Norman, Oklahoma, and later moved to Dallas; charismatic, hirsute drummer Josh Garza moved to Norman a year after the Curtis boys quit town, later hooking up with them in Dallas. They released a debut EP, September 000, in 2002, showcasing frazzled morsels of Lipsian psychedelia that showed a promise their new album, Now Here Is Nowhere, pays dividends upon. Drawing upon the grooves and Krautrock leanings of their live shows, there are a number of metallic, mantric noiseouts amongst the blissed-out ballads and anthemic rockers. Given that their stark, white-light-drenched concerts are fast becoming the stuff of legend, that's definitely a good thing.

And I don't think that 18th Street on a Friday night is an accurate reflection of the life of a typical 20-something. More like the reflection of those 20-somethings who choose to hang out on 18th Street on Friday nights.

And just because most people do something doesn't make it "normal". And just because most people do something doesn't make it a good decision. And just because most people do something doesn't mean it should be encouraged.

i don't want to distract us from making badsushi look like the idiot that she is, but i was having a discussion about 18th street a couple of saturdays ago from the vantage point of a friend's roof overlooking the madness:

how many people do you think are on the strip during the most crowded moment of the evening?  5,000? more?  we guessed that there are as many people on the street as there are in bars/clubs when the night is at it's craziest

I said nothing about encouragement or good decisions.  And I'm sorry, but most people doing something does make it normal when you're talking about what is normal behavior.  Alas, it's normal behavior to treat your family members badly sometimes.  Sorry, it's normal.  Neither a good choice nor encouraged.

A couple times over the past couple of years I've been on a bus going up 18th Street around 2:00 or 2:30 a.m., and it is downright scary.  It looks like there's some sort of riot or event going on -- certainly thousands are out on the sidewalks and in the streets, most looking for taxis.  And more than you'd think eating those humongous, head-sized slices of pizza.  Scary scary!!!

If 18th Street isn't a reflection of normal behavior of a typical 20-something, try Georgetown, Capitol Hill, Dupont Circle on a late Saturday night... These places may not be a mob scene the same way 18th St. can be, but those typical 20-somethings are all doing the same thing there too.

I'd say thats pretty "normal" behavior.

Secret Machines were fantastic.  Seemed better than last time, if only because they've gotten even more dynamic......they really know how to build and structure a song live so that it becomes much better than the recorded version.

Someone said they dragged a little bit, but this has been true each time I've seen them.  It's not dragging to me, it's just adding to the dynamic.  S/he was maybe referring to the Dylan cover they did (on their new EP), but I loved it; seems they purposely slow things down so they can get back to crescendo level.

Kol?  Poseurs.  It's not a coincidence that the British press is in love with them.  Those tight jeans and ironically gelled-to-look-naturally messy hair styles make them all about the look, which is maybe supposed to distract you from the fact that their music is repetitive.  They are sound more and more like a bad version of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers each time I see them.

Badsushi, mentioning an uncontrollable desire to punch Hoya in the nose is a "threat of physical harm".  Following through on your desire would be considered actual physical harm.  I think 9:30 should have a picture of you to keep watch for.  While Hoya may display so called "anti-social" qualities according to you, at least he isn't threatening to punch someone because he can't handle an insult.

Great sets by Helio Sequence and Secret Machines.  Iâ??ve been a big fan of both since last yearâ??s Black Cat gig.  I left halfway through the Kings of Leon set.  Probably the first time I had seen an entire lineup previously and knew for a fact that I would like the openers more than the headliner.  KOL arenâ??t bad, but the show had nowhere to go but down after Secret Machines.

Great songwriting and musicianship from Helio Sequence.  One of the most dynamic rock drummers Iâ??ve ever seen.  He plays the drums like a lead guitarist â?? every stroke matters; heâ??s not just keeping the beat.  I could have watched them play another hour, and with three full length albums already, they have the material.  Love and Distance was one of my favorite albums of last year.  In a three band lineup, the first group can sometimes be a throwaway but Iâ??ll bet the club could come up with a killer all-star show of the best of those openers from any given year.  These guys and Nic Armstrong from a few weeks ago would make my short list.  Letâ??s do this.

This was my 4th time to see the Secret Machines, and I may have to say that last night was the best theyâ??ve sounded.  I like the new material live and I think they are playing it tighter than their last 9:30 gig.  My only criticism of Wednesdayâ??s Recher show would have been that they seemed to let the sound get away from them a few times.  That may have just been the setup though â?? last night was better.  The light effects are also improved.  The intensity is still there, but without the piercing white lights pointed directly into the crowd.  I agree with the above comment that SM can lose momentum in some of the longer songs, which are already longer than most.  Didnâ??t bother me much though.  They always start and finish well.  Their closer, First Wave Intact, was a beast.

The crowd around me got very annoying near the end of the set.  Too much yapping and jostling for KOL position.  Not unexpected since I was up close, but Iâ??m always amazed that someone can obliviously chat away while a band is tearing it up on stage like SM were near the end.

I want to say that the Secret Machines arenâ??t radio friendly enough to really have mass appeal, but between iPods, commercials, and TV soundtracks, being radio friendly isnâ??t necessarily required for popularity anymore.  If they ever really do blow up, Iâ??ll certainly miss the small club gigs.  I think there were about 100 people at the Recher show.

Tom:  That was a great review.  I also noticed the talking, which was the worst durng "Girl from the North Country" which sadly is missing from their newest CD.  Did you notice how great SM's sound-balance was last night?  I usually wear ear-plugs, but even during "First Wave" their sound guy kept everything within melodic ranges...which I cannot say was true with KOL. Sorry I missed Helio...but I'm a big Nic Armstrong fan too...so based on your recommendation, I'll check out their cd.

i've worked at the 9:30 for well over two years and i post here quite frequently, and i have no idea what you look like.

also, it is naive to think that the secret machines have not used drugs before, especially hallucinogens. it is part of rock 'n' roll, whether a band sounds psychedelic or not. i have no reason to believe the secret machines are lying and that interview was mere gossip. and lastly, who cares? why should they care what straight-laced people think of them? if it's part of who they are, then why can't they be honest?

i didn't see this show, but i would have liked to see secret machines and the helio sequence. i'm not a kings of leon fan.

Okay, back to the music stuff.  I'm confused about the Secret Machines discography.  I thought Now Here is Nowhere is their most recent cd; was there ANOTHER EP on sale last night?  I know they had an ep at the Black Cat for their first outing here - but I cannot find it in my very messy cd cabinet... so I'm not sure if it's the EP you guys found "Girl from the North Country" on...it's not on "Now here is Nowhere".

you know i thought the same thing about KOL seeing them live awhile back. This whole they only listened to 60's and 70's music is baloney, i also heard alot more Tom Petty than anything else from them.  and a sort of a follow on to one of Ms. Sushi's comment, i thought it was odd for them to take the time to tune a guitar between songs of thier two song encore.  it's rock n' roll who is going to care if your slightly out of tune, kinda killed any momentum they had going too.

If it was a KOL private party, perhaps you could have put the NO ADMIT sign up earlier in the evening so none of us would have planned to meet up down there later...you also have a website updated daily where it might be considerate to post such notices.
there are various areas of the club that can be open to the public or restricted at just about any time during the night.  at most sold out shows, people complain that the vip area is roped off.  last night, it was open.  most nights the backbar is open, but sometimes we close it.  sometimes entire sections of the balcony are restricted.  sometimes, we even mark off areas of the floor with tape and keep people out of them.  we do not, and will not, post announcements every time we do so.  it's just not practical.

i'm fairly certain that the majority of the passes for the aftershow were given out to fans in the crowd, not people on the guest list.  i saw a member of their crew handing them out throughout the night.  either way, it's up to them.  if they want to keep people away, they can choose to.  the repurcussions fall on them, and no one else.

the secret machines have a new EP out... it's the same same cover as the LP only done in black.  it has six songs on it.  which brings the SM discography in the US up two two albums and an EP.  One independently released one.  There a some European singles out there as well.

And all this time I thought you were faux celeb...turns out your actually faux porn.  Interesting.

Well in a way. I like pr0n that purports to be of celebrities, but it is in actuality not. It's an interesting linguistic formation, I'll grant you.

Like Britney Rears in "Wild Back Stage Sex Party' or Kim Basinger in "9 1/2 Weeks"?

Hey Thatguy, did you spend your early 20's weekend evenings in the 18th Street bars smoking, drinking, and partying hard?

I believe that was Kim Assringer, technically.

But actually I meant more like Kirsten Dunst's head on some porn star's body. But only the classy, high quality stuff-  that's where the CONNOISSEUR comes in.

Hmmm, I notice you use the plural to refer to the baby-sitees...  This would insinuate that there were more people drinking, smoking and partying than babysitting.  And, that even a guy not indulging in those debaucheries, like Thatguy, was still surrounded by people indulging....

well, I didn't mean four specifically, but still entertaining.

I still can't understand what is so bad about being a 20 something that likes to go out and party hard on weekends. I'm one of those people and I do it because it's fun and what my friends and I like to do on a Saturday night. I can understand someone who can't afford to do that every weekend, I know I can't. But gosh, if I didn't cut loose every once in a while on a Saturday night, my parents might think there is something wrong with me!

At my age, my parents and I are both mature enough that I don't feel it necessary to give my parents the G-rated version of what I do on weekends. There is no point in trying to pull the wool over their eyes. My older sisters tried that and it never worked.

They get a slightly edited version   :p

i agree, and i love the Ottobar.  reminds me of a place in northern Ontario. anyway, what kind of bands?  I'll be there with bells on.

hm, as i understood it:

 a) she made crazy comments about the show
 b) people just began refuting them step-by-step
 c) i mention the band does acid
 d) badsushi lashes out at me
 d) i defend myself

but hey, you've proven that your ability to recall chains of events is always perfect, so i'll defer to you on this one.

If I tell you on-line, it'll just encourage another endless stream of irrelevant bullshit slamming the bands - from Hoya.  As usual it will be totally unrelated to their music/talent because he's quite skilled at Google and obfuscation - and seems to hop in on threads about shows he doesn't even attend.  Then he'll counter with personal attacks.  I'll PM you. It's a clear-cut case of OCD fer sure.

so how is stating matter-of-factly -- with actual quotes from the bandmembers themselves -- that the secret machines have done acid a slam on the band? your logic has way too many holes in it. also, hoya has said that he likes the band, so why would he slam them? you're looking for points of contention where there are none.

Well, Mr. Hook, I appreciate you views on my logic...and btw:  I think you do know me, but probably haven't made the connection with the forum name.  Here's his quote:

"the secret machines do a whole shitload of acid, i wouldn't be surprised if they "misinterpreted" what was going on in the backbar"  Wow, shitload:  what a precise term..."do": present case.  Would it worry you if you (or one of the bands you seem to hold in high regard) were driving around the US in a tour bus with this kind of info being put out there, reminding everyone that these drugs are still illegal?

His sources are supposed interviews - but btw: who gives a shit?  He does, cause he obviously spent time looking up website quotes (ad nauseum)...and if you think I am argumentative and full of shit with an opinion on EVERY subject, here's a number for you:  2,033 posts since  March 2004; versus 488 posts since Oct. 2003...and this, Mr. Hook, is the final word on this boring thread from me.  I promise.

are you really that deluded?  i made an off-hand comment about their drug use and you flipped out, accusing me slander and all sorts of other crap, then threatening to punch me ... and you don't give a shit? hah!

this by the way was the post of the week, i laughed, cried and got in touch with my outer adult...

You can listen to this show here:

 http://www.npr.org/programs/asc/ (http://www.npr.org/programs/asc/)

Have only listened to the first song so far and the vocals are too high in the mix, guitar too low.  Maybe they'll fix it as it goes along.  But in general, sounds good.  You don't really get the full, powerful impact SM makes. Still, really nice to be able to listen to this.
