.....So I'm driving down the toll road this morning and get myself a ticket from VA's finest.
On the ticket is says the charge is
"RECK LESS DRIVING 77-55"
Can someone from VA please explain what that charge is please as MD residents are not aware of such a traffic violation.
Thanks!

Looks like you got yourself a speeding ticket!! You were doing 77 mph in a 55 mph ZONE!! Over 20 mph infraction is considered reckless if I'm correct. I think you got the "reckless" charge because it was over 20 mph over the limit. Otherwise you would have got just a speeding ticket. That may be more points! Slow down!
-
Okay thanks....the charge in MD is
"RECKLESS DRVING"
If I was going even faster would the charge have been
"RECK MORE DRIVING"
?
-
at what point does it go from "reckless driving" to "driving with intent to kill"? 30 mph over? my friend got a ticket for that once, and i can't remember how fast she was going.
-
"Driving with intent to kill" I can't imagine there would ever be such a charge...How could a prosecuter ever prove that you were out with the intention of killing someone...unless of course you went up on the kerb and went after someone..like the old dude in Santa Monica, but even then his intent was not to kill.
-
No... that old guy just plowed through an entire block of 100's of people.... but he didn't intend to kill. What did he think was going to happen? Oh, I forgot, at the age of 80, thinking stops.... sorry about that ticket by the way. Not to rub it in, but that is one of the reasons I long ago decided to stick to the speed limit... I hate going slow but then I thought, "what am I really in a hurry for?"... and now that most states are using offenses like this to pay bills like welfare and healthcare, the fines will only get steeper.
-
I don't usually speed that much, I normally stay around 65 but was running a bit late for work and the toll road was quiet...got nabbed this time,no biggie. I have 0 points on my license so if I get a lawyer to represent me I'll get it reduced down a bit to just a speeding ticket....and life goes on!
-
I think if you're doing double the speed limit in a flashing school zone that's the worst speeding ticket you can get.
-

yea.. maybe the officer referred to it as that, but all i know is that my friend was going pretty damn fast.
i'm not a speeder, but sometimes 25 just feels way too slow. the highest over the limit i go is about 10... however on the highways when the limit is 55 and everyone else is going 80, well, you kind of have to keep up with everyone else.
-
I know in Virginia anything over 80 miles an hour is an automatic Reckless Driving. I was nabbed two years ago going 82 in a 65, the officer was cool though, since i hadnt got a ticket in 13 years he brought it down to 80 so i would only get a speeding ticket and not a Reckless driving ticket. Sad part is i had been driving for two hours and was 30 seconds away from my exit.
-
Wait til you come back over to Manchester Mankie. There are new hi-tech speed cameras all around the M60!
-
hey this raises an interesting question. If you flash those traffic cameras the bird do you think they'll mail you a ticket for insulting an officer? :D
-
I was nearly hauled off to jail for 95+ on the 101 up near San Francisco when I was 19. The officer let me guy so long as I agreed to appear in court 2 months later (which was an 8 hour drive from my home in So Cal). So for two months I prepared this research about how the speed limits wer lowered in the 70s to save gas and were never raised afterwards (i.e., not for safety issues so it can't be "Reckless Endagerment" which was the charge - an automatic suspension of your license. I ended up driving up Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) to get back to court so I couldn't get another ticket - it took alomost 10 hours but was the most beautiful drive I have ever experienced.
Anyhow, this asian guy in front of me had a similar ticket, pulls out a similar study and starts arguing with the judge - he immediately suspended the guys license and made him spend a night in jail. I go up there and apologized profusely for disrespecting the laws of Santa Rosa county and for wasting the tax payers time with my foolishness and was willing to accept whatever punishment the judge handed down. He asked me a few more questions, reduced the ticket to reckless driving (2 points) but made me pay the fine for reckless endangerment ($375 back in 1993) and told me to drive back to So Cal slowly and safely. I did. It was 10 years before I got another ticket - last month driving back from NY in MD. 72 in a 55 - $75, which pales in comparison
-
Did you at least wait to go home the next day so you could buy the Asian dude a beer for saving your butt?
-
you're pretty lucky, smack. you let the dude in front of you be the guinea pig. and yeah maybe it sucked to drive so far to court, but like you said, at least it was a beautiful drive.

I got out of Santa Rosa as quickly as the law allowed. I wasn't sure when he was getting out of jail anyways.

I appeared in court in Santa Rosa myself!! 1990.
I plead not guilty to a charge of public urination and an open container in vehicle!! I was found guilty and paid fines totalling 275.00.
I was living in San Fran at the time and spending weekends in Sonoma.

You need to learn how to kiss ass Mankie. I've gotten pulled over 3-4 times going better than 20 mph over the limit but never gotten a reckless charge.
If you're worried about the points (how many more points is reckless vs. speeding 20+ over the limit?) get a lawyer and take your car to have its speedometer checked and, presumably, found faulty. That way you can say you didn't think you were going a hair above 74.
-
Shit, I love getting rental cars and having a UK license......
I got caught doing 95 in a 70. I got a $100 fine and that was it. I was annoyed about it at the time, looking back I guess it wasnt so bad.
I love it when they chase after you with the blue lights flashing and then tell you that you are really naughty.

I totally kisses his arse...by the time he had walked to my car I had the license, reg and insurance all ready, told him I was late for work and apologized for speeding.
He looked to be about 14 years old, and when I drove off there was another trooper with him showing him how he should have parked his car in relation to mine etc. So I assume he was a rookie. I have a mate who's a pro at tickets (from experience) he said to get the speedo calibrated, write to VA to have the record of the last time the radar gun was calibrated and also when the Trooper was last certified in the use of one. He probably was only training on the radar so I could get it thrown out....I just want it droped to a speeding ticket.

better watch out. . .my friend had to spend the night in jail in leesburg after getting caught speeding on the greenway.. .apparently that's the law on the books out there

I think that the further south you go in VA, the worse things get for speeders. One of my friends was caught heading home from UVA for break and had to spend 72 hours in jail. Just ridiculous.

VA just needs some leg irons, a road boss, and a hard boiled egg eating contest and they would be just like the south..
jailed for speeding..what a good use of police time..

Somewhere in Bumf**k VA I got a 72 in a 65 zone! On Christmas day no less. I was livid, but paid the fine, and will never go near that area again. They had it set up with the little POS town having a sliver across 95 (or actually some other interstate...) so they could put their local git on the road running a trap. Can't beat these guys.

Ironically, decades ago I noticed that, generally, the fastest drivers on the roads in Maryland are Virginians. That's when I started calling them all a bunch of displaced Germans. I've yet to figure out how they've managed to make it through the state ticketless yet I'll see a Marylander pulled over for doing something like 60 in a 55 zone after the Virginian has speed by at about 70+.

Virginians drive fast to get around the typical Marylanders who are doing 48 in the left lane. What's up with that? Is it some sort of reverse custom in Maryland that slow traffic must stay to the left?
-
so scientist you like it when a man in uniform tells you that you are really naughty
-
Probably because they've got further to go, duh.

Not true! I'm a Maryland driver, and this topic was started because I was driving too fast. ;)
I've noticed that cars with DC tags are the most arrogant, dangerous and dumbest drivers in this area. Cutting you off, making right turns from the far left lane, tailgating, pulling into traffic then proceeding at 20mph..etc.

Oh, Christ! I know those types too well. Some of them drive like that because of all of the damn tickets that we get for watching the road instead of the speedometer because of Big Brother On Wheels.
And then there are the idiots who always drive just fast enough to get in front of you on a single lane road. You know the type. The ones driving 30 on a 45 road. Take their good old time getting to the green light and then step on it just enough to slide through the yellow light while you're stuck at the red light.
Sometimes it gets worse. The 1st slow poke works his way down the road but slow poke #2 makes a right or left turn at the intersection and then you are stuck behind another dragging-his-asster!
I just want to know how Virginians get through Maryland without a ticket. I don't want to stop them, I just want to know how to do it.

I think it's because VA is further south so they have that "notten mar state boy" attitude.
Also, VA consider speeding fines as revenue rather than punishment, so are more eager to write tickets. I've been told that there's speed traps further south that are designed solely for the purpose of catching non-locals...for example, a long straight stretch of road will have a 55mph limit then suddenly switch to a 35mph for no apparent reason, then have a cop there full time.

Delaware is like that! You wonder how they can get by with no sales tax. It's all the tickets and/or nights in jail they collect. But Maryland is Tax Hell. We pay them too. In fact, there are organizations who are in the process of trying prove that the red light cameras in Maryland are purposely set with too short yellow lights in order to collect revenue. I've even heard of cases where people have come to complete stops, made legal rights on red, got a ticket in the mail, went to court and were still forced to pay them with the logic that you don't get points. Fucking extortionists!

I got nailed by a camera in Bethesda, and this is exactly how it happened;
It was on the way home from work about 8:45 at night, it was raining so the roads were wet. I came to a stop at the light and heard the screeching of wheels on the road. I looked in my rear view mirror to see a minivan heading right for me. I drove forward to avoid getting rear-ended and "FLASH" I got my photo taken. Maybe I should've stayed were I was and got in a wreck but avoided a fine...I could've sued and everything had they rear ended me.
I thought we had the right to address our accusers in the USA...how the hell do you address a friggin camera?

I've heard plenty of stories like that about Big Brother's Eyeballs! In fact, when the first cameras were installed in Maryland, someone slammed on their brakes because they were afraid of getting a ticket. Should have gone for the ticket because they ended up dying!
-
the only reason that they have cameras is because the stupid police (i apologize if anyone here is or loves a police officer personally) are too damn lazy to wait around all day giving people tickets.

In Baltimore Shitty, it's because they are too busy chasing down real criminals. I won't knock the cops there because they are very overworked and treated like shit in the 'city that bleeds'. It's the judicial and political systems that are so fucked up.
We did have lots and lots of people abusing the light system and going through lights that had been red for a good long time. They are the ones that I blame! But Baltimore and Maryland are very greedy and see all the money coming in and have turned it into one big KGB spying network to suck as much money out of everyone that they can. Supposedly, in Baltimore Shitty especially, the yellow light time has been cut back intentionally to snag more people so they can extort more money. And from what I've heard, going to court to fight it, no matter how innocent you really are, doesn't work. They just add on court costs. Fuckers!

well i agree about the red light cameras.. sorry i didn't really read all of the thread (how typical) but i was talking about the speed trap cameras... but with the red lights, i have a very personal and painful attachment to an incident involving some asshole who ran a red light at a very busy intersection and pretty much escaped without so much as a slap on the hand... i think the cameras may seem like a nuisance but in the end, if you're dumb enough to run a red light blatantly (i'm not talking about it's still yellow when you get there, etc etc)you should get a ticket. where are you going that is so damn important it can't wait 30 more seconds?

If the punished drunk drivers enough maybe they wouldn't need to use big brother to fix the traffic light sequence to catch us out.
A good few years ago I was delivering pizza's part time....on 23rd December I was stopped waiting to make a left turn when I was rear ended by some prick who was drunk out of his skull. When it got to court he gave the old "I'm a Vietnam vet" horse shit and ended up with a $200 fine and had to attend some driving classes or something like that...I was so pissed off at the sentence I jumped up and yelled, "I'm a Falklands veteran, don't I get any justice because we actually won our war or what?" ...not the smartest thing to say I know, but I was so mad I lost control. I ended up with 9 months of physical therapy and was unable to work for 6 months....bottom line, it cost the drunken arsehole $200 and me thousands of dollars in lost wages, all my savings, my excellent credit rating and medical problems for the rest of my life as a result. That was Maryland by the way.

Of course I've heard of Gulf war syndrome, but they aren't really whinging on like the 'Nam' lot do. It's time they got over it and got a feckin job like all the other veterans do.
