Hey now.
I'm going to be in LV at the end of this month, going to a place called the Huntridge Theatre to see some shows. I was wondering if anyone has been there, heard things about it. Seems to hold the same calliber shows as the 9:30 or so. At the same time if anyone has any other suggestions of things to do in town, let me know.
Thanks.
-
no, but i am going at the end of March and there is a big "skafest" at some skate park there at that time. you probably alrady knew that, give your username.
-
I hear gambling and hookers are allowed there.
-
Yeah,
The ska summit. Should be interesting, at least. Some good bands though; Let's go bowling, Fishbone and Mobtown. I wish there was more representation from the east coast though, besides the shitty toasters... www.skasummit.com[/url]
What's so shitty about the toasters? I was into the Toasters while you were still shitting your diapers.

Not moi. Two things I'll never do in my life: go to Vegas, or visit a hooker.
-
Well you are missing out not going to Vegas, just looking at the people is enough entertainment.
-
I'd have to agree...Vegas is great for people watching.
As for the toasters, just because they were the first to bring the ska thing into the US, doesn't mean they're good, in fact I think they're sub-par as far as a ska band goes, unless you like a whiny brit singer with too goddamn much vibrato. They had their moments, when Coolie Ranx was with them, but as far as musical talent, they're washed up. When I think of a good ska styled band, I'd lean towards the folks who are writing really good music, like Vic Rice and Agent Jay and Django in NYC.
And, I'm pretty sure I wasn't still shitting myself when you started to listen to the toasters. Wait. I just shit myself.
-
I saw the Toasters probably a good 10 times between 1987-1996. I like the fact that they never injected punk rock into their ska like a lot of the 90's ska bands did. Ska's not really my thing anymore, but I'll havefond memories of a number of Toasters shows.
-
Yeah,
Toasters shows were always a ghood time, but listening to them recorded was usually pretty painful for me. My first toasters show was in 1988, and it was a blast.
-
You may be right there. SkaBoom was the only album that ever interested me enough to buy it. And now it just sits on the shelf.

quote:
Originally posted by Skaboss:
Yeah,
Toasters shows were always a ghood time, but listening to them recorded was usually pretty painful for me. vegas is great. . .go to the bellagio for a great buffet, water show and the blackjack tables, in my experience, pay quickly. mgm grand, disappointing, but nice rooms. paris, new york new york, caesars (check out the animatronic scenes in their mall), and bellagio are excellent. and, for the $3 blackjack tables, head downtown, things'll be great when you're Downtown, no finer place for sure Downtown, everything's waiting for you. . .
I found NY disappointing in its appearance and its restaurants lame as well. However, I was impressed by Paris and its monument replicas; I hear the food is good as well, especially at the Eiffel Tower restaurant. Also, I had a blast hanging out at the Hard Rock Cafe, as it was more geared towards my friends and I's age group. They have a cool Mexican restaurant inside too, the name escapes me. And you can't beat the memorabilia.
As for clubbing, I hear Ra in the Luxor is a nice draw, but there are many more to choose from in that category as most hotels have several nightclubs of their own.
[This message has been edited by Dandy01 (edited 02-05-2003).]

Lame restaurants? I think DC leads the way in that category.

I don't think so at all, we have so much to choose from, including eateries from all kinds of countries!
[This message has been edited by Dandy01 (edited 02-05-2003).]

There are lots of good restaurants in DC though! Bistrot Du Coin, Oceanaire Seafood Room, Butterfield 9...those are my fovorites. I think we're pretty lucky here.

Well of course DC has a number of redneck towns beat, food wise. But it's way overrated and way overpriced. And I've yet to find Indian food as good as the Indian food in the rinky dink upstate NY town near where I grew up, or as good as the Indian leftovers I just ate that I had cooked myself.

quote:
Originally posted by jadetree:
Try living in the midwest, and I don't mean Chicago.

Falls Church and Fairfax are in Virginia. I thought we were taking about DC.

quote:
Originally posted by Dandy01:
Have you tried Raaga or Haandi in Falls Church? or the Connaught Place or Jaipur in Fairfax? But I generally agree that there are not that many good restaraunts, most of the ones people go on and on about are pretty average. Still beats trying to find a restaraunt in St. Louis, unless you want Italian, and I don't.

I gotta check it out myself, thanks.

Yes, Aditi and Jyoti are both pretty decent. I guess I've gotten more critical as my own cooking ability has improved.
I'll quote my dear on this one, and though I hate to use the phrase, I haven't eaten anywhere in DC that "blew me away".
Can't believe yo didn't find good food in NYC, Dandy. I always used to when I went there more often. But then again, maybe my standards were lower back then.

And we may have had the worst food ever at Iota last night. Don't order the ziti (horrible taste) or the Caesar salad (you'd have to see it to believe it). Go there for the music, but skip the food.

In the East Coast NY, I like those 24 hour coffee shops like 7A, or Simone's, or the Waverly restaurant where they are a million variety of pancakes, etc.

Was just in Vegas two weekends ago, and go often ($400 for direct flight and three nights at the Circus Circus). First, while there are cheaper casinos downtown, that area becomes verrrry sketchy at night, and if you wanted shitty casinoes, just go to Atlantic City. I think the fun of Vegas is the strip. At the Excalibur/NYNY/MGM end of the strip, you'll have a hard time finding any blackjack tables less than $20 minimum bet. However, on the other end, some of the older-skool casinos like the Sahara and Circus Circus have plenty $5 and even $3 tables, and you get as many free drinks as any other place. I went to Bellagio to gamble once -- half an hour later, I walked out having lost several hundred bucks.
I've stayed in most of the hotel casinos on the strip and when it comes down to it, the actual hotel rooms are all pretty much the same. And for that reason, I love the Sahara and Circus Circus.
Just my two pennies.

It was a great time: blackjack, drinking, shows at the House of Blues, hanging at the pool, drinking, people watching, good food, and some drinking as well. None of the things listed are my thing. Well people watching, but I couldn't imagine the people in Vegas to be that interesting to watch. And food, but I'm guessing it's not a vegetarian mecca.
I did go to Reno once, and it was a horror show. I just imagine Vegas to be like Reno, but on a much grander scale.
Guess that's the beauty of the world, there's a place for everyone to enjoy.

quote:
Originally posted by scumpond:
I never went to vegas until last year at the advanced age of 36. If so I saw Dance Hall Crashers with a couple of bands with a load of merchandise to sell a few years back. (real memorable acts they were)
The Huntridge is a vintage movie theatre (30/40s) thats been converted to a music hall. The front section of seats was removed for a pit and the seats the rest of the way back. It was a nice venue especially if you wanted to be able to sit. I was very disappointed in the sound mix for the DHC bass player. It was muddy and just awful.
I remember the Sahara for having the least obnoxious canned music. Lots of 50/60s classics. There was a decent record store near there too...
Did somebody say the Vegas?
Smackie loves Vegas. I still go about 4 times a year (when I lived in LA I would go 12-15 times).
The Huntridge?
I'll be there friday (dropkick murphy's). Been there before for punk shows. It is north of the strip (just past the Sahara).
As for knocking vegas without trying it - not even listening. words cannot describe Vegas.
If you're going to Vegas for the restaurants, you're going to Vegas for the wrong reasons.
Hookers are illegal in vegas, however brothels are legal in Nevada (there's a difference and I'm not going to go into it). The Bunny Farm/Ranch is the only one I know of that still exists. the feds used to own the Mustang Ranch but I think its shut down now.
Low stakes gambling is only in downtown these days and I recommend the Sahara as well and I also recommend the NASCAR racing game. See if Vansmack still has the fastest time (I set it in August of 2002).
Hi stakes gambling is the only way to win a lot of money. The poker tournament tables are a good way to drink for a long time and not lose a lot of money.
The Joint at the Hard Rock is the best place to see a concert and the bar in the middle is cool to hang out but it gets crowded really fast and there is a dress code. the HOB is nice in Mandalay bay and the hottest chicks with clothes on are at Rum Jungle. there will be a long line and the cover will be steep. The rooftop Voodoo lounge atop the Rio is a party.
The best place for beautiful women with their clothes off is Olympic Gardens.
What sets Vegas apart is the sports book. this is sports dead time but NASCAR and the Tourney are starting up so it could be a good time.
that is all I have for you. No go off and enjoy Vegas you heathens.
