Say what you like about "this washed up old has been", Cyndi Lauper has one hell of a voice...multi-octave range, and she knows how to use it. Sound check sounded good, she's got a talented band with her. We expected the show to sell out when we booked it.
So what exactly do you have against her Markie?

Since when is having a recent hit the benchmark for artistic ability? Seems to me I've seen plenty of discussions on this very forum arguing the very opposite. Anyway, I'm with Chills, why be judgemental? And why be insulting?

When was Lloyd Cole EVER popular in the mainstream? I think his work has been consistently good throughout his career. Though the one time I saw him live, he was pretty boring.

quote:
Originally posted by markie:

I dont know about the US.....
But in the UK there were a triumverate of hipster records every student worthy of the name owned:
The Smiths, The Smiths
Prefab Sprout, Faron young
Llloyd Cole, Rattlesnakes
I think that album shifted millions. He had a kid in the early 90's and then released the bad album with morning has broken on it.
I saw him 10 years ago and he was great then. But then he has fantastic songs.

I never even heard of Lloyd Cole until his second album, Easy Pieces.
In the U.K., Easy Pieces was a Top Ten hit. But although the album saw something like a proper release in the U.S. and the Commotions toured extensively, no American breakthrough materialized.

I saw Lloyd Cole many years ago and found him a rather drab entertainer, although he does write some very good songs.

Oooh...the Heatseeker chart, now there's a true measure of album sales...
Rhett Miller's album debuted at #1 on the Heatseeker chart. Sounds impressive until you realize that that translated to #126 on the overall chart.
I'm surprised Ms. Lauper was even on the Heatseeker chart. markie i went to the show because i have been a fan of cyndis from 83 and have all her records, so i went and was bored to tears, easily the worse event i have been to and i include the ideal home show in my list of events, bad sound, she stoped songs if they didnt sound right and told a hundred of the most boring stories ever, there was a large gay following and a most people were 30+ some in there 40s, if you can take the pain of having a dick shoved up your arse you can take the pain of a cyndi lauper concert, i couldnt, i left when she started the 100 monkeys story,i should never have gone.

I remember Bungle Bud saying he didn't want to meet Markie for a beer because that would be "too gay" to come into the city to meet another guy for a beer. Now BB comes into the city and hags our with hundreds of gay men at a club. Bungle, you've come a long way.

I have to agree with Bungle Bud on this one, not only were us straight people a minority but the damn stories kept going and going and going and going and going.....good thing you left at the 100 monkeys story cause that was about 15 minutes by itself. She sounded good when she actually sang but that was rare. It was either her telling stories or her having the crowd sing. And the country version of She-Bop was a total waste.....Oh well it was still better then Natalie Merchant two years ago.

Lose the homophobia, people. This is 2003 and that's so not cool. If the show was lousy, fine. I don't know because I wasn't there. If the stories were really that numerous and long, then I agree it was a bad show. But just because there were a lot of gay people there is not a valid reason to dislike the show. Gay people go to events all the time where they are outnumbered by straight people and don't have a problem with it. Why is the reverse such a big problem?
