Title: Weird Al Roll Call
Post by: Driveway on August 16, 2007, 02:33:00 pm
Well?  Surely I won't be at the Warner Theatre alone!

Please explain to me why you would choose a Weird Al concert over a Neko Case concert. Or why someone would choose to go to a Weird Al concert period. Not trying to be judgmental, just trying to understand!

I mean, sure, his parodies are mildly funny if you're familiar with the song her is parodying. But live? Does he do lots of song and dance routines or something?

Jeez, Rhett. It's not like there are similarities between the two. Besides, Neko is sold out and she often tours; she'll be around solo five times again before Weird Al comes back.

Don't hate on Weird Al.  What he's doing is probably more unique and memorable than what Neko Case will be doing.

Having seen him at Ram's Head a few months ago, I can answer this one: yes.  It's far more than just Weird Al singing, he turns the whole thing into a production, complete with props, set changes and outrageous cosutume changes, which occour dozens of times in the set, all themed to the song or set of songs being performed.

It was my one and only time seeing him, after having been somewhat of a fan over the last 15 years, and I can definitely say it was worth seeing once.

Also, this went on sale long before Neko Case was ever announced.

Believe it or not, I don't think I've heard Neko Before.  I've heard Nico, but not Neko.  People also think I'm weird because I love Destroyer but I haven't really listened to New Pronos.  Al does a great show.  I saw hime once at KING's DOMINION a few years ago.  Most diverse audience ever.  It was like 45 bucks for a day at the park and the show combined.

rhett, how come whenever i open a thread and read the initial post, you're always the second post on the thread, totally pissing on whatever it was the initial poster was excited for or mentioning? does it make you feel better or is it some kind of weird obsession?

please try to tone it down, its slightly ridiculous.

I was hardly pissing on what the poster was mentioning. I just find it tough to imagine actually wanting to go to a Weird Al show, and was hoping he/she could shed some light on the live Weird Al appeal. And they did. Gee whiz!

If you're referring to the MIA thread, guilty as charged. But I'm sure there are plenty who are turned off by her music.

So should every thread just be a long list of "woohoo, I'm going"? How interesting is that?

I dont think that's the issue here, but man, you are the most prejudiced guy in this bboard for sure...(or should I say, for "Surly"?)

I'll be there.  I'd love to see Neko, but I missed Al at Rams Head and he definitely puts on one of the best live acts I've ever seen.

personally i'm torn... on the one hand it is predictable and boring.  i mean, most of rhett's contributions are "don'ts" - i don't get it, i don't want to go, i don't like it, i don't get how anyone else can like it, etc.  maybe being oppositional-defiant is the new mainstream? (that would definitely get him to change his ways   :p  )

on the other hand, it gets debate going.  i just need to remind myself that i'm not going to change his mind, and not take his curmudgeoness seriously.  there is no justifying taste.

as interesting as automatically pissing on everything?    :p

"roll call" threads serve two purposes, as far as i can tell: seeing who's going to the show and how excited they are about it, and a place to come back and post reviews, post-concert questions, etc.  as the incubus fiasco taught us, one-stop shopping is a good thing.  "roll call" threads help keep things neat.  i guess it also provides a place to ask "why"...

if i wasn't packing tonight i'd definitely be at the weird al show.

By definition, parodies are less "unique" then original material.

A+ one of the better shows I have seen this year.

interesting - what about a parody of britney, fallout boy, or some other un-original bubblegum shlock?  the original might be very derivative, thus creating space for the parody to be more original than the original (for example, taking a bland oh-oh-i-love-you song and making some cutting social commentary).

But its a different medium.  Its comedy.  The purpose of the parody is to ridicule or at least poke fun at the originals.  I'm not exactly a Weird Al fan, but I'd consider his material superior to 90 percent of "original" music out there these days in terms of quality.

He put on the fat suit for fat.  Dressed as Nirvana for Smells like Nirvana, played The Saga Begins complete with a bunch of storm troopers and darth as his "dancers."  He played about half of "Trapped in the drive thru" and all of "ALbuquerue."  Video clips of interviews with K.Fed, Britney, Celine, Marshall Mathers, justin others and of course stuff from UHF.  Sold out crowd of nerdy parents and soon to be dorky children.  It was great.

Loved the storm troopers.  And I was so psyched to see Albuquerque.
One of my favorite moments, though, was the Rage Against the Machine schtick.  During the song about suing people.  Good stuff.
