devin the dude.. nice.

i saw him earlier this year at some club in bethesda (i think Fuzion?) and the show was so poorly organized. doors open at 8, devin doesnt go on stage until midnight?? in the meanwhile, we're subjected to any and every local rapper in existence, most of whom were terrible. devin finally goes on, plays 2 songs and then the power is cut?? a fight breaks out, then 20 minutes later, he goes back on for maybe 20-30 minutes max and the show is over. well, for me anyways. after devin left, the local rappers took the stage yet AGAIN. i guess the 4 hours before wasnt enough time for them to get out their "message."

but it was cool getting to see devin live.

a number of the bands listed above had announced shows in NYC for some time now (the Rodrigo Y Gabriela on 10/19, Justice on 10/20, etc etc)... these aren't "new" shows.  now it looks like it's being presented/represented as part of CMJ?  is that how this thing works?

further confusing things for me: one can buy individual tickets to these events.  however,  CMJ is selling expensive festival passes (http://www.ticketweb.com/t3/event/EventListings?pl=cmj&orgId=10527).  how does that work?  if i  buy tickets for justice (http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/00003F0FD4DDBAF8)  (and only justice) through ticketmassturd, can i be denied entry because a ton of CMJ'ers showed up and filled the venue?

I was hot I missed that show, too.  After hearing what jumped off, I'm glad I wasn't there.

yeah those shows were announced and they are part of CMJ. that was the most recent update CMJ had. shows will start getting announced, but you can also check myspace pages as a lot of them are starting to list showcases they're playing in. lots of showcases put on by labels, blog shows (underrated kicked ass last year), etc. a lot of the larger shows get announced earlier and do sell out.

i got the feeling that bowery presents was opening terminal 5 just in time for cmj. another venue to have shows at. so yes - justice, mia, rodrigo y gabriela, etc. are all part of cmj shows.  badges dont guarantee admittance to shows, but you get into a lot of other things with the badges. oh forgot to add- ticketholders get into all shows. doesnt matter what time you show up - with a ticket they cant deny you entrance. naturally with a badge - for the hotter shows you have to show up early and sometimes sit through a lot of bands you dont wanna see.

ps the cmj site tells a lot of this info.

to add on to what's been said about this, certain shows have a specific limit of the number of CMJ badges they let in - sometimes it's 50 sometimes 100.  And yes, ticketholders always get in.

I only paid for a badge once.  You can volunteer and get your badge for free and meet fun people at the same time.

Flosstrodamus

small typo: Flosstradamus    :)     one thing i'm not digging about the CMJ website is that it gives you zero information about date and venue.  a quick web search turned up nada - if anyone knows when flosstradamus is playing, please share.  they were my biggest surprise at lolla, totally rocked the small mindfield stage.

not all of the shows have been announced. bands are announced ahead of times as to who will be playing at cmj. some places (ie bowery and terminal 5) have announced some of the line-ups. but most shows/venues havent listed who they have playing at cmj. i think knitting factory announced of their nights (at least as far as it being a label show). forgot which label it was.

and im holding off on buying tix till i know who will be playing when. but im bummed i cant see the bsp show. ah well ill catch them at maxwells. stars is the same night.  :(

One of Bay Area's worst. There's a reason they never made it big.  :)

my friends and i are all big fans of them. i really couldnt care less what anyone thinks, but if that music doesnt make you 'shake your ass' (per the song), im not quite sure what would. and i didnt say they were one of the bay area's best bands, just one of my favs.

birdmonster is easily my current favorite out of there. scissors for lefty a close 2nd, and too many other bands to name. its a shame creeper lagoon broke up, i somehow missed seeing them when i had a bunch of opportunities.

whoever came up with the idea of packing this many bands in so few days and over such distances should be shot...

on thursday 10/18, how to chose between:

 a) Simian Mobile Disco Plus Crystal Castles
MUSIC HALL OF WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN, NY

 and

 b) British Sea Power Plus Pela / 1990s / Tiny Masters of Today/ Stardeath and White Dwarfs / The Grey Race
 Bowery Ballroom, NEW YORK, NY

i've been wanting to see SMD for some time now, but the line-up at the bowery is damn solid too...

uhhh thats why you see the bands whey they are NOT playing at cmj. simian mobile disco was just here this past saturday night. bsp has a bunch of dates (not with that entire lineup).

cmj has a lot to offer. thats why you go and see a bunch of shows at a bunch of venues and pick and choose which artsists you HAVE to see. i think friday ive turned it into 4 different venues and a ton of bands. luckily theyre all within a 1 block radius of each other. I <3 the LES.
