Title: MORE PUMPKINS THAN YOU CAN HANDLE
Post by: bnyced0 on May 14, 2007, 03:24:00 pm
Fred Mills
 May 14, 2007
Now here??s a news item you don??t read every day from any band: in a nigh-on unprecedented move not witnessed except in the jamband milieu, the Smashing Pumpkins have just announced two sets of residency gigs: nine slated for the Orange Peel in Asheville, NC (June 23, 24, 26, 27, 29, 30 and July 2, 3, and 5) plus eight at the Fillmore in San Francisco (July 22, 24, 25, 27, 28, 30 and 31 and August 1).
The residencies will bookend the July 10 release of the new Pumpkins album Zeitgeist.
Acccording to band management, these ??very special and intimate residencies, the band will vary set lists from night to night. They'll perform songs from Zeitgeist Pumpkins classics plus retool songs that didn't make it onto Zeitgeist and even offer tunes written the day of the show. The shows will give fans a unique opportunity to see the Pumpkins inside the process of creation and operating in the spur of the moment.?
The eight concerts in San Francisco mark the first time the band has returned to The Fillmore since April of 1994 when they were invited to be the band to re-open the historic venue. The Asheville shows mark the first time the Pumpkins will have played a residency since their four gigs at the Double Door in Chicago in 1994.
And in a neat move to pre-empt the inevitable bootleggers, the band is actively encouring fans to bring audio and video gear to record the shows in Asheville and San Fran.
Here??s the rest of the important stuff??note the admirable anti-scalping measures being instituted. Not that that won??t prevent eBay from going into overdrive shortly after the on-sale? caveat emptor.
General admission tickets for these all-ages shows go on sale Sunday, May 20.
The San Francisco tickets ($25.00 each) and will be available at 10:00 AM Pacific via www.ticketmaster.com (http://www.ticketmaster.com) and www.livenation.com. (http://www.livenation.com.)
For the Asheville show, tickets ($20.00 each) will go on sale at 1:00 PM Eastern at www.theorangepeel.net (http://www.theorangepeel.net) or www.ticketweb.com. (http://www.ticketweb.com.)
Tickets for both shows will be available through internet ONLY.
Tickets will NOT be available at either box offices, charge-by-phone or ticket outlets. Two-ticket limit per person. Purchaser must pick up tickets at the box office night-of-show only. Ticket-holders must immediately enter the venue. Photo ID required for ticket pick-up. Tickets are non-transferable. No refunds or exchanges. A service charge is added to each ticket price.

Do you think they'll do some good hiking while they're hanging out in the Asheville area?

I'd like to see them play DC...
I'm thinking DAR perhaps? (though I'd be into 9:30)

Remember that talk about going to concerts solo - here's a good example of one I'll likely have to take in solo.

Fly me out and put me up for a week, and I'll join you.

I'm going to try to get tickets to both shows of the second weekend of the Asheville residency. If any are still available after getting those two, I'll try for the opening weekend.

We talking the Filmore dates?  I'd be more than happy to pick up a ticket for you if you'll be in town during the "residency."

Unless I'm mistaken, Jeff Schroeder and Ginger Reyes (the reported other members of SP) are from Asheville and San Francisco.

Lying?

Asheville is in NC, not SC, dummy. Probably the coolest town in NC, unless you're a big Carrboro fan.

I'm going to try for 6/29 and 30 but, sadly, my prospective other ticket would be taken.    :(

Also, after some fact checking, I was inaccurately informed. Both the new members are from Cali. No one is from Asheville. The Asheville paper says the pumpkins manager is friends with the person who books for the Orange Peel. Apparently, they wanted an east and west coast residency, and this is just where they picked.

Asheville logistics, I've gone to the Orange Peel a couple of times and there's a Day's Inn within walking distance. It's nothing special but it's relatively cheap (less than $75 a night) has free internet, microwaves, and fridges in the rooms.  Hopefully the link below works but if not its on Patton Avenue.

Selfish bastard:)  Could you each buy tickets, I'd take one and I'd just give the other one away to a sad soul at the door that would otherwise be left out?

Actually, if you're willing to do some sort of paypal thing after I order the tickets, I think we'd be willing to attempt this. I can't PROMISE anything because obviously it's the Pumpkins in a club that holds <1000 people, but we'll try.

"lying": you've stated several times on this board that you couldn't go out for an in-town show, and you want us to believe you'll leave your pregnant wife (or newborn child) for a whole week?

yeah, i caught the SC/NC mix-up and corrected it previously.  i've never been down that way but have friends to visit, need to get on that at some point.  i'm told it's very pretty country.

Yeah, you caught me lying. Guilty as charged.

Depending on a number of things, babies first show(s) might be the free Drive By Truckers show in NYC on 7/19 and the free Neko Case show on 7/20, or the free Camera Obscura show on 8/24.

But alas, flying solo to SF is out of the question. Unless there is a work conference there. Which there is not, this year.

According to the email I received from The Orange Peel, both audio and video taping of the shows are encouraged, too bad that the Orange Peel is one of the worst fucking venues I've ever encountered in my 15+ years of filming to shoot good video in.

Chuck, I remember you raling against the filthy hippies and panhandlers when you were in San Fran. Asheville has PLENTY of filthy hippies roaming around that town!

Aw, I love Asheville.  Really nice hiking places there.  I almost went to school there.  But, now I'm glad I didn't.
