Title: front row seats? am i the only one?
Post by: sonickteam2 on August 23, 2007, 12:58:00 pm
all this talk of people with their front row seats. am i the only one whos never had them?

not counting GA shows, which even then i have never been against the barricade, save a few short times at festivals.

i had 4th row seats at a Coldplay show in Baltimore way way back but thats as close as i have ever had seats.  am i doing something wrong here, haha.

The only time I've ever had front row seats for anything was a seated general admission show.

only "real" front rows i've ever had was for primus ar DAR, which i got through the fan club.  ended up being directly in front of les.  t'was a ton of fun, seeing his facial expressions up close.

i've gotten AA row seats at patriot center a few times (most recently for muse), which is front row of the sides (i.e. not floor) - excellent seats, raised off the floor.

i pulled front row orch for arcade fire, but they are all the way to the side (right against the wall).  i threw them back.

I started in the 5th or 6th row for the Arcade Fire at DAR a few months back but managed to get up front when Win told everybody to ignore the ushers.

I did once for a concert at the warner theater. I bought them a week before the show and it just happened to be when they released some VIP (maybe season ticket holder?) seats.

I found front row to the right of the stage at the Patriot Center the day of the show.

I've only had them a few times.  Bloc Party was the biggest show.  Laurie Anderson at Lisner in 2004 and a couple of Dead-related things nobody else cares about. hmmm....that may be all.  It's definitely rare for me.

First row 4-5 times for Pearl Jam. The benefit of having a low fan club number.

We got front row for Arcade Fire at DAR...tried once and it told us it couldn't find any tickets, then tried again and ended up with front row, and in one of the center sections too.

The only front row seats I have ever gotten were from connections, never through ticketbastard/tickets.com/ticketron(if you're old enough).

I've had them about a half dozen times over the years and it's almost always been a mistake which makes them memorable.

Prince, Tacoma Dome, Purple Rain tour, mom hooked up the family with Purple Circle tix right up front and this was fantastic, first time that close to anything, and every experience went down hill from there.

The Cure at San Diego Arena, kiss kiss kiss me tour, too close as it sounded like shit with the reverb.

Iron Maiden, same venue, Powerslave tour, they had so much shit on the stage I couldn't see everything very well, and again with the reverb. Only positive is that I caught Steve Harris' Westham wristband that I keep ticketstubs from that year to this day.

Depeche Mode, Dodger Stadium, Violator tour, place was so freekin big that front row didn't mean shit.

Natalie Merchant, Cambridge Corn Exchange, Motherland tour, way too close for comfort, had to look straight up, and everytime she sat on a stool she'd have to cross her legs and I had to turn away because her bloomers were looking at me.  Sound was spotty too.

Mary J. Blige, DAR Constitution Hall, No More Drama Tour, this show introduced me to the fact that front row at DAR sucks, too close, no leg room, too loud, all around bad.  Now I only go with 4th/5th or back there.

Probably too much information, could have just said you're not missing shit.

More times than I can probably remember.

Chili Peppers/Queens Of The Stone Age
 New Edition
 Jane's Addiction/Audioslave
 Tool

Several in the 1st 10 rows:
 Stones (Twice)
 The Police
 Arcade Fire
 Nelly Furtado
 Jay-Z (several)
 R. Kelly
 Prince
 Michael Jackson

Many more in the teens I can't remember:
Up In Smoke Tour (Dre, Snoop, Ice Cube, Eminem)
Hard Knock Life Tour (Jay-Z, DMX, Method Man & Redman)
 The Who
 Chili Peppers
 Stones

 Countless GA shows . . . . Too many.

VARIATION ON THE THEME:

so, front row ain't all that... and the one Orch-A that i did get was a great show, but not mind-blowing. SO - let's change the question from what's the "absolute" best seat you've had, to a more subjective/relative "what good/great seats were you most psyched about?" or were more meaningful to you...  take quality & size of the show into account.

for me, better than my front-row primus tix were:
 - fourth row dead-center, foo fighter acoustic show, DAR
 - fifth row, dylan & raconteurs, patriot center
 - tenth row, prince at wachovia center

for some shows, they really turn up those front fills... no need for that.

the purple one always is, i can only imagine what he was like during the purple rain tour.  he so blew me away in DC that i hopped online as soon as i got home and got myself the above-mentioned floor seat for his show in philly a week later.  prince it truly one of - if not the - greatest entertainers and live performers active today.  of all the rumors of upcoming tours, his is the one i'm most excited about.  i'm a shoe-in for catching him in both NYC and philly (fingers crossed).

bnyce - you're the second person i know for whom prince's purple rain tour was their first show... he too used the exact same phrase: "it's been downhill ever since."

Correction, first FRONT ROW show, my FIRST show was Led Zepplin and Judas Priest,  Kingdome Seattle July 17th, 1977, again Mom hooked me up big time.

Judas Priest was my favorite band after that for years, had Rob Halford plastered all over my walls, wasn't really clued into the gay thing back then, though in hindsight it's sooooo freekin obvious, heh?!

should this thread-jacking be successful it couldn't be a "thread-rape": i can't do it alone, others must participate, and through their participation others will have given their consent (except for mr. pee, of course, since he would be drunk and thus his posting could not be taken as a sign of consent   :p  ).

in addition to the two shows i had front row tickets (eits in nyc back in feb and coldplay in louisville in 03), i HAD front row tickets to a king crimson show outside of pittsburgh in 01, but my friend flaked out on me for goign to the show and i was unable to find anyone to go last-minute and ended up not being able to go to the show at all..

And here they will accuse you of being me.

Totally agree with you, Pollard. I haven't been to a show that WASN'T general admission in nearly 20 years. Check that, there was one Wolftrap show I had seats for, one Lisner show, and one DAR show, but that's it.

I'm with you.  I can think of a handful of shows I've been to at larger-then-9:30 sized venues, and I really didn't enjoy any of them.  The Pixies at DAR was the except, but I was also in the 6th row.  If I can score GA tix to Merriweather, I'll take them, otherwise, I don't bother.

For me, it's less about the size of the venue and more about where I've seen the band before.  The White Stripes at Merriweather stood up well against their Recher Theatre show, but then again,  I had GA seats.  The Shins at DAR was a stinker, especially after seeing them at the Black Cat.

Large seated venues are for soccer moms.

Large venues aren't so large when you're up front.  I was closer for Bloc Party/Arcade Fire at DAR than I was at their 9:30 shows.  And I wasn't crammed in with people shoving me, stepping on my feet, trying to squeeze past me, etc. like I was at those club shows.  Well...not until the end of the Arcade Fire show anyway.

It's all about how badly I want to hear the music.  Do I want to go hear the band, or do I want to sit at home and think about the good-old-days?  I've been known to do both.

My only issue with the bigger shows is the bigger cost that generally goes along with it.  That keeps me away more than anything else.

Oh - except stadiums.  I hate stadiums.  And Nissan.

festivals, as big as they can get, i like.  places like Verizon, Nissan, Merriweather, Patriot Center, i cant do, really ever.  unless its someone like Radiohead or Prince or Pearl Jam, i mean then its, you either see them or you dont.  and most of the time, you just go to say you saw them.

that said, shows with less than 50 people at them are equally lame.

No killer seats i.e. 1st 20 (at worst, prefer 5 - 15 rows back) rows = No Director

I find it hard to believe every group you like/would pay to see live only performs in theater-sized venues.

And to answer your question, what you get out of it, is a priceless night you remember for the rest of your life where one can let loose, party, sing, dance (if you wish), & kinda make time stop for an hour and a half.  Two+ with encores.  That's all.  Nothing special.

I'm sorry, but I am a seat WHORE.

With seated shows for someone I really like, I will guarantee myself in the front 5 rows. Aside from that, I usually have good Ticketmaster karma.

I don't find it hard to believe, knowing Pollard's tastes. Some people, like Pollard, actually discover and see bands multiple times before they ever get to the theater-sized venues.   ;)

on the occasions bands I like start playing big venues, I stop attending, thats why I make sure to see them when they are at smaller venues

the biggest venue I have been in the last 10 years is DAR, and only for the Pixies and Wilco/Sonic Youth, Pixies was a letdown for me, and that was the last wilco show I will ever attend, the best wilco show for me was the 9:30 show in september of 2001 before yankee hotel foxtrot came out, not a snobbish thing, just the best experience I had at one of their shows

well i dont think ive had first row seats (aside from broadway shows - which is entirely different) to any concerts ive been to.

but the last time i saw morrissey at the apollo theater - i had the very top row/last row in the entire theater. we were so far back it was pretty funny. the only good news is this time its at hammerstein. no worries on that.

cant wait to see where my cure seats are at MSG. unless i get pit tix for most these shows - i figure ill be way back. i had awful seats at oakland coliseum for the cure and DM last time they were around. cant be any worse.

oh i did have 5th row seats for tori in concord. best friend is a die-hard fan, which is how we ended up with those.

The only front row seats I can think of was R.E.M. at Merriweather in 89.  That was cool.  During the encore Mike Mills jumped off the stage and played right in front of us for a bit.

 Arlo Guthrie/Pete Seeger
 Steve Vai/Zappa Plays Zappa

Was against the stage railing for P!ATD this past November at Patriot Center.

Never gotten a front row ticket though.

Springsteen on the Devils and Dust tour within the first ten rows.

Was given 13th row floor tickets by the Stones' "people" at their last D.C. show.  Three of my friends and I had bought tickets in the nosebleeds, obstructed view, the works, that were still seventy dollars.  A woman and a security guy approached us and asked, "How many in your party?"  We were with our moms, making it six people.  The security guy said "Nope, too many."

We had no idea what they were talking about but I had a hunch that it had something to do with moving us up to better seats, because Springsteen does something similar at his shows.  I pulled the mom/daughter, music bringing people together card and ended up with $2400 worth of seats completely free.  One of my more memorable experiences at a show.

Only front row seated show I've had was 1992 Steve Miller band. It was the weekend me and 3 of my buddies all graduated from college, and we scored the perfect front row, center stage tickets for the show. At the time, we were into the power acid thing, and we all took 4-5 doses each and just tripped out on Steve's ripples (he'd gained considerable weight) and on how shit-hot of a guitar player he is (or seemed to be).

Most of the shows in my concert-going history are general admission standing, so I've been in the front row many, many times.

However, I've yet to sit in the front row at a seated concert. I'm not that lucky.  :D  At the Ryan Adams & the Cardinals show in Seattle last month, I was six rows back. I'll be in the sixth row at the Crowded House/Pete Yorn show in Portland next week.

judas priest tour dates from 1977 (http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:O2liRBXZ31AJ:members.firstinter.net/markster/SINAFTERSIN.html+priest+opens+for+zeppelin&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=5&gl=us)

they did play shows with zeppelin.

"Judas Priest did two shows with Led Zeppelin; it was the Bill Graham event DAY ON THE GREEN at the Oakland Coliseum. The true essence of metal came out of those first two dates with Priest in the late '70s - coming out to America for the first time. It was Robert Plant who got us on that bill. He knew that Priest were in town, and he said, 'Get me that band from my home on the bill, I want Priest to open the show'. Those shows were responsible for breaking Priest on the west coast. All the press and international media were at those shows. That was a very pivotal moment for Priest and for metal music."

4 front rows, all fairly recently after many (25)years of no front rows at all

wilco at merriweather a couple of years ago - it was uncomfortable being that close

ben folds w/bso at Strathmore - too far to stage left to really see ben play the piano

elvis costello w/bso at Strathmore - awesome

fountains of wayne at the hard rock - general admission show - great to be right at stage right

Backstory, growing up in Tacoma, WA we didn't have professional sports outside of the Supersonics until the Kingdom was built, so the closest NFL & MLB was in Oakland were we had season tickets for the Raiders.  It made sense at the time as my folks met in the Bay area where they were undergrads.

Anyway when they built the Kingdom we got the Seahawks and Mariners, and my folks got season tickets for the Seahawks and along with it priviledges for shows at the venue, and so how/why we were able to go to the Zeppelin show, where JP did not play.

However that following weekend, we went to shows in Oakland where JP along with others played with Zeppelin, again hooked up primarilly because of having season tickets.

My parents sold out, and became "Seahawkers" shortly after while I'm still a diehard Raiders and A's fan.

Moral of the story, 30 years can play havoc with memories, but I did become Priest fan after those episodes, and they were my introduction to concert going, and I'm obviously still scarred...
