Title: How much do you spend on concert admission per year?
Post by: Charlie Nakatestes, Japanese Golfer on August 23, 2007, 03:52:00 pm
Not counting drinks, merchandise, and travel to the show (unless you want to include that separately).

My guess for myself: $200, though that may decrease now as I'm getting older and have a baby and wife at home...

Now that I think about it more, I'm guessing I'm probably in the $150 range...

That's a good question.  I don't know off the top of my head, since I go in weird spurts.  If I had to guess, I'd say somewhere around $300 - $400 on an average year.

I can't wait to see the Director & bnyce's tallies.

Last year I must have spent about...400.

This year.....probably close to 400 already, considering i paid 60 for White Stripes and 200 for V Fest plus other shows here and there. And I just got wind of like 5 to 10 shows I wanna go to. Plus traveling [Philly to see Justice].

Let's just say it has 3 zeros behind it & leave it at that.  Don't even make me think about including travel, drinks, merch, and the dreaded "et cetera" category.  Only those fortunate enough to kick it with me a show know about that.  Names are un-necessary.

And my yearly total is prolly a slow quarter for bnyce.   :D

i spent $150 on cure tickets for my girlfriend and i this year, and thats the most I've ever paid. i dont go to all that many shows a year, maybe 10 at the most. on average, i spend about $100-$150 a year. this year, i've probably spent about $300.

only 2 other shows i have to go to this year, Mono @ Ramshead, and Doug Stanhope @ Arlington Cinema Drafthouse. i dont think im going to any others. maybe DMST @ black cat and Megadeth @ 930. but those are maybes.

lets see, probably about $500 between me and the wife, she likes to go to some cheesy shows, which always seem to carry a higher ticket price. then add about another $150 for shows i go to without her, so i only have to buy one ticket.

i'll go with $650. (more if we pick a festival, of course)

and i would think the Bombay Chutney may have a lot of people beat too.

I wonder if I spend more on concert tickets or clothes to be quite honest.

As such, this year i've probably spent about $500 or $600... possibly heading upwards of $800 by the end of the year. And I didn't even have to buy Virgin Festival tickets...

I would say just under $1000.  I wish tickets.com had a working order history.

Probably not as many as you'd think.  I don't go to very many "big ticket" shows or festivals and I don't go to nearly as many club shows as I used to.   I spend way too much, but I'm sure plenty of folks here have me beat by an indie mile.

i'm sure i'd be shocked if i came up with my exact annual spend, so i'd rather not find out.  i'm definitely into the four digits too, on tickets alone - but one must consider i'm buying for two 90% of the time, since in this couple concert tickets are my responsibility. i/we do tend to go to a lot of expensive "big ticket" shows.

i suspect that ixkpd-bk's total would be right up there with those two.  boardee trivia: what do all three have in common? (other than an addiction to live shows, of course...)

joe marshmellow is probably on the same level as me - a step below those three, but still boardline insane     :p

as thedirector said, it's an investment in my happiness.  i have the income to support this habit, and this is what i chose to spend it on as it brings me the most happiness.  for some it's shoes, for others it's cars, other it's financial investments... me, it's the unique high i get from a good performance.  it does take on a "chasing the dragon" quality at times.

I don't even wanna think about the wardrobe budget.  But then again, one must keep up appearances.  Image is everything.

Funny this thread pops up. I remember a conversation with a certain boardie here who
until they opened their trap never made me even think about what I was spending on shows.

I currently have tickets for Hoodoo Gurus, Hives, Jens Lekman, QOTSA, Superdrag, and Dylan.  Other than Dylan (for which I've got 2), they are all singles.  Including service charges, that's ~$400 just for those 6 shows for which I have already purchased tickets.  I can think of at least ten other shows in September and October that I will attend.

 So, a conservative estimate is ~$200 a month. I would guess ~$2500/year

these days probably less than Rhett, but even when I was going to shows all the time tickets were normally under $15, $2 vodka nights before hand at pollys tended to add up though, how I dont miss the morning after those or the schlitz and a shot specials at Velvet Lounge

Probably between $2,000 to $3,000. More this year 'cause of Coachella and Lollapalooza   :)

 I'd say $5,000 this year.

i think i spend prolly close to 3 digits at least. the festival brought it up this year, plus some high priced shows - crowded house, morrissey, the cure, etc

i try not to think of it - as im debating which shows to get tix to. lately some bands have been so nice to get me on the guest list - which im most grateful for.

on that note - i scored rentals tix for $3.50 tonight. since i could get 4 tix - i was generous and shared the wealth without even charging a person more than i paid.

I spend at least a good 5000 in concerts every year, on tickets alone.

Travel is a completely different category, in which I probably spend about a good 10000 a year.

I mean, but I'm a different case than most people because I follow bands/tours, and I just know that shit adds up if you're not careful.

For instance, I'm planning on doing at least 25 dates of Tori Amos' upcoming tour (no judgement), and I already know I need to save about 2000 for it. I just did the three Daft Punk dates across the country, which although it didn't set me back as much as 25 shows in 2 months, it still set me back a couple hundred.

But you just roll with it, I mean, it pays off in the end for me, anyway.

Speaking of denial, am I the only one who has noticed that the biggest spenders, and most obsessive, are boardies of color?

Anyway, my total annual expenditure is silly, but if we limit it to just admission and NOT associated expenses, it's not that bad less than 5K for sure.

But again, single guy, no kids, no debt, and no other nasty habits other than this.

Over the last 3 years I have averaged 55 shows per.  Looking over the list I am guessing about $20 - $25 average ticket cost.  Doing the math, the ticket expense comes to between $1,100 - $1,375 per year per person.  Most of these shows are at least an hour out of town so add whatever to that.

Just adding up my ticket stubs so far, $660 this year. But unfortunately, if I go with somebody, I almost always have to buy their ticket to get them to go, so you can probably close to double that figure already.

EDIT: I also have already purchased $575 in future tickets for shows within 2007. /edit

Plus I live in Richmond so you can probably come close to tripling it since every DC show has a built-in $35 gas expense.

But I have saved money and will be buying house #1 in November, so Rhett should be proud of me for that.

You should go to more shows alone, so you'll be sure and have enough for the down payment, considering the crazy market at the moment your lender may ask for 25% down at the last minute  :p

Same here. Except for my minor cocaine addiction.  ;)  But yeah.

And wow, yeah I know I'm somewhat of a newbie here and all, but I had no clue the big spenders in the show-going category were all black. Awesome.

Side Note: I did a little sum of my YTD spending on tickets, and it's embarrassing. Between the North American Bjork shows, seeing Queens of the Stone Age in Oklahoma, Daft Punk, Massive Attack in the UK back in February, and the shows I've seen here it's ridiculous.

Oh, and I'm totally not rich by any means, like, don't get me wrong, there are some days I don't have money for the fucking Metro because I have REALLY bad money management skills. I just invest in my happiness, as the Director wonderfully put it.

i know that in 2001 i spent close to $700 on concert tickets and cab fare-and those were all local shows! i gleefully told my coworkers that i couldn't afford vacation because i was going to see BDB, Travis, Dplan, U2, Madonna, etc etc etc. That music was my vacation. How f'n music geeky of me! HA!

but yeah, i too, have gone well into 4 digits. i think i'd rather just not tally the amount. so much for using that entry in microsoft money!

i will travel for shows. typically its just philly but a train ticket and hotel room is over $150 combined.  and once you start going further-nyc, chicago, san fran, the price of your concert ticket was the cheapest thing!

it also depends on the artist touring that year. i know for prince, madonna, springsteen, u2, its going to cost $100 a ticket versus $15 for the frames. and if its u2, i'm going to see them multiple times on the tour.

im right up there with you joe. ill be lucky if i only attend 25 shows in sept/oct. everytime i go out with friends, inevitablly they want me to go check out some other band, so the amount of shows keep going up. and im not even beginning to yet think about cmj.

and if the rentals play DC, they rocked! i highly encourage everyone to check them out.

My friend and I decided to cut back on shows because we've been to so many good ones that we're now hard to impress.  Do any of the big spenders here or you well connected kids find yourself getting bored just because you go to so many shows?

I don't know if I go to all that many, in a raw number sense, probably average three a week over the year, but I hit more festivals than the average person which I would count as one each.

There really isn't anyone I want to see that I haven't seen, so I try to find new bands, as well as reliable favorites.

I love to travel so that's a big part of it, so going someplace new with a show being the excuse is common.

I also don't have as much free time as most so it's about convenience over cost, so if someone I want to see is playing in NY on the weekend and DC or Baltimore during the week I'll likely opt for NY with the added bonus that post show options are o'plenty.

Plus I usually consider a show as the beginning of the night, I like to go dancing and generally party pretty hard so weeknights are again not optimal cause I leave for work pretty early.

My spending is large mostly because of those constraints and prerequisites, not so much because of sheer number of shows, I'm at a point in my life where time and convenience is far more scarce/valuable than cost/money so that always takes precedence.

So no boredom is not a problem, I'm pretty selective, I don't have time just to go to a show because I don't have anything else to do, it's pretty calculated and I'm always planning 6-9 months ahead of time, especially for setting up festival runs.

That's my thought. The less is more theory. The less I go to, the more I enjoy those that I do so. Or at least moderation.

And like you, having gone to so many shows makes me tough to impress!

Looking at some of these totals, I had two thoughts:

 1) I think I need to revise my guess.  I have a feeling I'm way too low, and I probably don't catch more than 4-6 shows a month at the most.

 2) Having a trust fund must be awesome   :D

 3) Christ, after typing #2, I think I'm turning into Rhett

You're a little more soulful than the average Canadian I've encountered.  I'm considering giving you an honorary black person pass.  Just don't forsake it/us while you're driving.       ;)

For a lot of the bands that I've seen multiple times, with the exception of maybe Daft Punk or Massive Attack, their setlists change (sometimes radically) from show to show, which keeps me on my toes. I don't really get bored at shows. Tired sometimes, but not really bored.

I would venture to say I spend $600-700 a year on shows, including a festival or two (Bonnaroo this year). I'll be going to 3 shows within a week toward the end of Sept. - Soulive and Kings of Leon at 930, and Electric Magnolia Co at Black Cat. Should be a good fall

I hope I'm not sidetracking this thread, Rhett. I am so curious though - without getting too personal (and not to repeat similar discussions) -- do you all have great jobs that you can afford these amounts which include travel, food, drinks?  And for some it's a hobby, lifestyle, whatever, but is there some competition in this area to be at the "happening" show?

I'm curious too.  Either fools have a TON of vacation days each year, or some of you aren't gainfully employed.  Which of course begs the question "How the fuck do you pay for it all?"

As for "competition in this area to be at the "happening" show", I wonder that too.  Either we've found a board of people that mostly have an IDENTICAL taste in music (what are the odds of that?) or there is a bit of scenester-ism going on.

I think I'm a little older than some of the other hardcores, I'm in the middle income bracket I suppose, but without any "obligations" ie. spouse, kids, crack habit, etc.

No student loans, car payments, etc. just a couple of mortgages and insurance, so my disposable income ratio is pretty high and I view this as a lifestyle.

I enjoy my work, but I work to enjoy my life, I have a lot of interests sports, cinema, theater, politics, travel, but music is the center of it all I suppose, I plan my life around concerts and travel, and I love my life....

Time wise, I'm relegated to using the weekends, holidays, and work associated travel time.  And being accustommed to not getting a lot of sleep, but again no one at home nagging me about it, so it's cool.

People with different tastes largely get chased off the board or don't post because there aren't many people with their tastes here.

As for scenesterism, it definitely happens, but I think it's often misinterpreted.  I don't think a lot of people say "OMG! I have to go to that show because it's the place to be!"  I think many go because they are curious to see what the hype is all about.

i have a job. i work 9:30 - 5:30. not speaking for others - but as most the shows i see are in NYC - theres virtually no travel costs (public transportation or walking) - its pre-tax dollars from my paycheck for subway. dont drink at shows all the time (often time friends buy me drinks). and i just put a good chunk of my money towards rent & concerts. no more vacation time than anyone else (prob less), but unfortunately it also means i cant travel to shows.

doubt that any of us are trust fund babies, we just have different priorities. like some of the guys stated, im single, own property and am not worrying about being home at xyz time or family comittments. (family is in cali). i also go to a ton of free shows when i can, and have been meeting people who can get me into shows for free. but i dont mind paying $10/$15 for a show. my friends like to do the same things, so these days its as cheap as seeing a movie.

will i be doing this in a few years?? who knows.

Dude, you bastardized a ton of posts, but....First off I don't work for Apple, I have stock in Apple.

2nd,  I didn't jump on a plane to France, I took the Eurostar from London because I was ALREADY in the UK for ATP Fest the weekend prior and added a couple of days onto the previously scheduled trip once the show was announced. This was just good ole vacation time.

The week after when I went to PinkPop in the Netherlands was sorta a free weekend because I had meetings in Brussels, just cost me hotel and festival pass as the airfare was covered via work.  Used travel and comp time to make up the difference.

I'm a strategic traveler, I foot the bill for most myself, but often working internationally is bonus for a concert nut job like me.

I'm guessing a lot of these people telecommute and just take their laptops with them.  If I travel to a show I generally do it cheaply by using air or hotel points, staying with friends,  taking the smellyass Chinatown bus etc.

Okay this should help: I have four weeks of paid time off at my job, I try and telework as MUCH as possible, and my rent is cheap.

But essentially, I am just really bad with money, and I act very compulsively. If I see tickets are on sale for a show that I want to see for a band that I like, more than likely, I'll be on that shit. I'm a fan of Southwest Airlines because you can fly a bunch of places for hella cheap if you book early enough. I've been doing what I do (seeing multiple shows and what not), since about 99, and I still managed to get away with graduating college and maintaining a somewhat normal life. I'm no superhuman super-scenester with a trust fund, I'm just a regular 23-year old with a job and really bad money management skills... (and maybe OCD?)

Getting back on topic...

I average about 40 concerts per year. I guesstimate that my average cost per concert is about $25 for admission. That comes to roughly $1000 per year, not including ancillary costs like transportation, drinks, etc. I almost never buy concert T-shirts anymore, and I only have an occasional beer. As for transportation, I usually take the Metro unless it's a large venue in MD or VA.

I do get a lot of vacation time, but I don't take it to attend shows. I'm single and gainfully employed and have a flexible work schedule. (Did I answer all the questions?)

Wait a minute. What kind of work do you do that gives you four weeks of paid vacation, and enough money so that you have 5K per year for concert tickets, and another 10K per year for concert related travel, and still be able to pay all your bills....when you're a 23 year old recently out of college?

I'm a public policy consultant for a company here in DC. I get most of August off, due to Congress being out on recess, and I'm damn good at what I do. Went to school on scholarship. Not really high in debt. Every 23-year old doesn't necessarily "struggle" with finances.

I spend between $500-$1,000. Depends on who I'm seeing.

A few big shows @ MCI Center, other venues( Madonna, Destiny's Child, Beyonce/Missy Elliot/Alicia Keys) and a few at 930, other venues(Massive Attack, Garbage, Lily Allen 2X, Peaches,Nelly Furtado)

Sort of a concert newbie, really didn't start going until this year, but spent about $350 so far and tickets in hand for 2007.  Note: Includes 2 comedy shows (~$100).

But that's not including mom's b-day gift tickets to Tim McGraw.  I had no interest, but had to buy 2 so she wasn't alone.

That's tough to figure out.  I'm going to guess $2K, but that includes a badge for SxSW and a couple big ticket shows (this year, two Police shows if not three and The Who; in the past Madonna, Simon & Garfunkel, etc.).  Luckily I got a $60 presale three day pass to Lolla.

I'm estimating about 40 shows at clubs, averaging $17, and then the big ticket items.

But, this is my primary entertainment/hobby.

Usually about 1500, but with the house this year, less than 200.
