it was a performance - a horrible, embarassing one, but still just a performance. she got hella nervous because she was on national TV, her brain turned off (and we all want to believe that it was never turned on) and ended up making a fool of herself. she should have stopped, regrouped and started over. instead she forged on with her higher cerebral functions on vacation.
she had to win other such contests to become miss south carolina in the first place, so she has pulled off the answer-a-question thing in the past. while damn entertaining, let's not blow this outta proportion. does anyone seriously believe that she is truly that stupid, on a day to day basis?

really? maybe i'm an optimist, maybe i'm too much of a humanist, but i (personally) believe that this young woman can answer a question like "what did you think of that restaurant?" without bringing up south africa, asia, and people on the street's lack of menus.
this video, in its various forms, has clocked something like 3 million views. i fear we're going ot be hearing about this for longer than we should :roll:

But the "she froze" excuse doesn't cut it, especially if you believe she did some heavy lifting previously to make it this far. I don't know what to think, but this wasn't her losing her place, she didn't have ANY coherence, not with thoughts, words, ANYTHING. When you're nervous it's common for a bunch of "umm's," "AND's," "I mean's," etc. But what this tape showed (if it's true and not parody of some sort, in which case I guess I've been punked into engaging), was so obscene and cringe worthy I felt like calling 911 to report a crime.
I don't only feel sad for her, but anyone related to her, anyone who knows anyone related to her, and for the women she beat out to become the representative from TN, because it's inconceivable there were women (well girls) dumber than her, and there's not a woman alive beautiful enough to put up with that level of stupidity, NOT A ONE.
As sad as it is, why the phuck do we even have a Teen USA? That's probably the saddest thing of all.

SMYRNA, Tenn. â?? A man who authorities say used his computer to make fake $100 bills to buy lap dances at a strip club has pleaded guilty to counterfeiting charges, federal prosecutors said.
Strippers at Deja Vu in Nashville were suspicious of the bills and called police after Damon Armagost spent $600 of the fake money April 16, authorities said.
When officers arrived, Armagost first told them he got the money when he sold gold coins for $1,400 to an unidentified person.
U.S. Secret Service agents later determined that counterfeit bills with the same serial number had been passed in other parts of the country. When they went to Armagost's Smyrna home, about 20 miles southeast of Nashville, a family member told agents that an image of a $100 bill had been on a computer there.
Armagost then acknowledged that he had downloaded the image from the Internet and printed 14 of the bills, prosecutors said. He pleaded guilty Friday to manufacturing and passing counterfeit currency and has a sentencing date of Nov. 5.

MD has better crab cakes, and a football team playing within its boundaries that actually represents one of its cities. You'd think a state that's flat, has a lot of cars and is, well, filled with Jersey people would have at least a half-dozen drive-ins. I would have thought New Jersey would be the drive-in capital of the East Coast. It's not. Maryland has Bengie's. Even Delaware has one.

North Carolina can lay claim to -- among other things -- the music scene of Chapel Hill (Superchunk, Archers of Loaf, Ben Folds Five, Southern Culture on the Skids, etc.).
I can't think of much to say about South Carolina that's positive, but it's definitely unique. The highways all have those yield-no-merge-area entrance ramps, and people all drive at 65 mph no matter what the speed limit is. (Work area, speed limit 40 mph = everyone drives at 65 mph. Non-work area, actual speed limit of 65 mph = everyone still drives at 65 mph.)

Well there are many states that have an oasis of relevance amongst an otherwise forsaken and non-descript landscape, (ie. Austin, Las Vegas, Chicago, etc) so I can give you Chapel Hill, but beyond that why the hell should we have two Carolinas, does the population numbers support it?
Wouldn't the world be a better place if we rolled a bunch of these red states into one and they could have their own industries, elections, same-DNA marraige laws, guns for all, etc.
I'm thinking The carolinas, virginias, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia (special dispensation for Atlanta), Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Iowa, The dakotas, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, would have enough in common for a kind of defacto secession, and we could even let them keep the handful of professional sports franchises they have, though I'm sure they'd prefer to establish a Queer-shooting league and expand NASCAR with indoor tracks so they could go year round.
Then come election time to avoid disenfranchising anyone we could give them say an electoral vote for every point they add to the overall GDP. Separate but equal, the founder fathers would be proud. :p
Now before anyone launches a tirade against my suggestions, I kidd because I love, I was born in a red state, as were my folks, and I seem to be dating women from red states lately so I mean no disrespect, really...... :roll:

Lauren Caitlin Upton, Miss South Carolina Teen USA, whose mangled response to a pageant question has become an Internet sensation, will have a second chance to answer it on Tuesday morning's Today show.
"I didn't do anything wrong," she told South Carolina's The State newspaper. "I wasn't expecting [the question]. I lost my train of thought."
She added she "completely misunderstood" the question, which she'll get a second stab at on Today.
The beauty contestant's video on YouTube has received more than 2 million hits thanks to her amazingly off-the-mark answer at Friday night's pageant, when she was queried about why Americans are so bad at geography.
Specifically, she was asked why one-fifth of Americans can't find the United States on a map.
"I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because some people out there in our nation don't have maps," she ventured.
During her meandering response, she also tossed in out-of-the-blue references to "the Iraq" and "Asian countries" and their need for the support of the American educational system in identifying the United States on the map.
Upton is described as a varsity athlete and student leader at Lexington High School, where she graduated in June with a 3.5 GPA.
Despite the on-camera gaffe, Upton finished as third runner-up.

She graduated, yet there's no mention of the proud University that accepted this student leader and her hard earned 3.5 GPA.
Perhaps she planned on deferring a year or so while she finished out the Bush Administration as Chief Foreign Policy speech writer, I mean they really do need someone that can equal the President in his grasp of the nuances of the "The Iraq" and Asian Countries challenges that face our country.

I don't have any "Ivy League" roots as me and mine are West Coast educated, but I think it's great that there's placement for people like Ms. Teen SC, perhaps someday we'll have the time to find placements for less blonde, less white, less financially advantaged, and less photogenic girls and boys from the inner city as well.
But first we should probably ensure they have elementary, junior high, and senior high schools that prepare them to be HOT, HOT, HOT...

i personally believe that the performance given by miss SC stands on its own, regardless of skin or hair color.

Appalachian State University, located in Boone, NC, is part of the University of North Carolina system. I cringed (as I imagine other North Carolinians did) when I read that that's where Miss Teen SC is going.
I remember some not-particularly-bright people from my high school who couldn't get into UNC-Chapel Hill going to Appalachian State. However, in ASU's defense, I think it was also supposed to have a smaller student population, more friendly atmosphere, etc.
So... hardly a top-tier school, but it imagine it has its merits. I'm not sure where it stands in prestige rankings vs. other non-flagship UNC-system schools. (UNC-Chapel Hill is the flagship and N.C. State would be second, but I'm not sure how ASU rates against UNC-Asheville, UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Wilmington, UNC-Greensboro, etc.)

I didn't see the contest, but I'd wager there were less than a handful of contestants that weren't cute blonde white girls, but that wasn't my point.
Anyone looking that stupid would have been ridiculed, but I was talking about the larger fascination about this demographic that permeates nearly everything, and the absolute indisputable fact that if ANYTHING good or bad happens to a cute blonde white girl, it is "NEWS." And we are going to see, hear, and read about it ad naseum.
And perhaps you Canadians don't get it :p

You're comparing apples and oranges. The UNC schools are R-I universities as determined by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. App State is a Masters granting institution. In historical context, these were traditionally Normal Schools that were created to prepare teachers at the turn of the century. Today, they are more like work force development and training schools, not research schools, so attendance would depend on what you were going to school for.
In the case of Miss Teen South Carolina, a graphic design major would not go to an R-I school. I doubt UNC-Chapel Hill even offers the major.

I'm also not sure what you meant by "favored," I'm certainly not making that argument, nor insinuating that have a priviledged position in our society, but rather they are the only thing that seems to be "newsworthy," and the amount of time spent fretting over them by the media (and I would assume by americans, who if they weren't tuning in would squash this trend) is disproportionate to their otherwise non-productivity or relevance to society.

anyone watch the TMZ TV show yet? will it require the taking of a shower after watching it?
