Title: London Recommendations
Post by: grotty on October 07, 2004, 02:11:00 pm
I'm leaving tomorrow for a week in London. I'm staying up near Camden.

I think this is my third time. I've done a lot of the usual suspects already (the Eye, the Tower, Big Ben, etc.) I'm more than little disappointed to be missing a lot of good shows while I'm gone.

I checked Pollstar for London next week, but the pickin's look slim. Very slim. I'll grab a Timeout in the airport.

But...Does anybody know of a good other source for checking on shows over there?

Any show recommendations for next week that you know of?

Anything else brilliant that I just need to do while I'm there?

I can find a concert for everyday....

Spiritualized, Lloyd Cole, Le Tigre, Avril Lavigne, Rod Stewart.

 The Delgados are playing tonight.

I like the new Tate gallery and the walk from it across the millenium bridge to St Pauls.

I'll let you in on a little secret.  The Hard Rock Cafe is sweet.

Hit up the Hard Rock on Tuesday, it's burger night.  Planet Hollywood on Wednesday, it's fish and chips night.

I saw the Delgados scheduled for tonight. That's some horrible timing (for me)

I'll be gone by the Spiritualized/Primal Scream next Saturday. NOW - that's what I'm looking for though.

I could always see Maroon 5 (along with Rod Stewart & Avril Lavigne) - they appear to be playing multiple nights.

Or in the London theatre district you can choose from one of many musicals based on the hits of Abba or Queen.  On my last trip, there were two different Abba-based musicals available

I hear there's a chick with blue hair who gives out free Pixies tickets.

So...based on all the smartass responses -

You either have no ideas, or

There really is nothing to do in London.

I should have just waited until later to ask when Jaguar & Kurosawa would be checking. They're more worldly than you yahoos.    :D

 under artist, then tour.

Yes, it's a country music site, but they have listings for all types of music.

i'd post a query of what to do musically over at  Must Destroy Music Forum (http://www.mustdestroymusic.com/index.html), they are pretty hip to the harder side of the rock in London.  They also released the early Darkness singles before they hit the big top.

The last time I was in London, I saw this guy: http://www.sidgriffin.com/ (http://www.sidgriffin.com/) who now lives in London and does regular pub gigs. Doesn't appear to be playing any UK dates until Nov.

Whaqt I saw of him was good, but I was too busy fighting with my soon to be ex-girlfriend to enjoy the show.

London is a cool town.  It sounds like you've done all the tourist stuff, so do what I do, just walk around, pop into random pubs, drink a lot of lukewarm British ale.   Time Out is a decent weekly guide for things going on.  Spend some time getting to feel like a regular in your neighborhood, that's the way you'll really get a flavor for what's going on.

also for hipster goings-on, check out a website called Urban 75 based in Brixton.  I don't remember the exact link, just Google it.

let me know if there's anything more specific you need to know.

Make sure you get a London Broil.  Also Fodor's recommends that you eat at Wimpys.  Make sure you drink lotsa tea and say, "Tut tut..." a lot.  Ride one of those double dekker bus thingies, too.

But don't stay out in the sun too long.

check out Tate Modern.  Unfortunately you just missed the Edward Hopper (http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/exhibitions/hopper/) exhibit.

You definitely HAVE to go to the Tate Modern. And if possible, you should see the Turners at the original Tate Gallery. (Turner is one of my favorite artists.) As for shows, it does look like you are narrowly missing some. But here are a few ideas:

10/9 Clinic, To Rococo Rot, etc. @  Hackney Empire (http://www.hackneyempire.co.uk)
10/12 Bloc Party @  Lock 17 (http://www.lock17.com/) (in Camden!) -and- Club AC30 as Medusa recommended (If you can only make it to one of these, go to AC30.)
 10/13 !!! @  The Astoria (http://www.meanfiddler.com/displayPage.asp?PageID=250)  (very convenient location)
 10/14 Seafood @ ULU (Don't miss Seafood!!)

There are some others (Razorlight), but they are sold out...

If you wanted to travel outside of London to Oxford, you could see several other bands like the 22-20s. And The Blueskins are playing a show in Nottingham.

I always try to catch at least one play while in London. You may want to check the theatre guide when you get there. I haven't looked at the listings lately because it's too painful to miss such good shows.

Perfect that you are staying near Camden. There is a lot going on in that area. The street markets alone are worth checking out. Oh! A terrific tiny venue is the  Notting Hill Arts Club (http://www.nottinghillartsclub.com/) . Just a hangout during the day, but at night they have shows.

And when you get there, tell Robin that you are a friend of Jaguar's.     :(   We were even talking about maybe doing some kind of a Club DC30 thing (at my suggestion) possibly with Medusa and Strange but it's not to be at this time. If we ever work it out, I'll let you all know.

You should have asked days ago and I could have asked Robin for more info or some of my other friends what's going on.

 Also, from the same source:
"The Zillions have got a residency at the Catch bar in Kingsland Road this
month, playing every Tuesday in October.  I've heard fab things about them
and they're meant to be influenced by My Bloody Valentine amongst others so
right up your street if you like Club AC30.  They are on at 9pm each week
and it's FREE to get in...and if that's not enough to tempt you, yours truly
will be manning the wheels of steel on Tuesday 19th under my Columbia Road
guise.  Hope to see you down there!
