So it's a new year, and I'm looking for some fresh new music.
Anyone know of any good unsigned bands? (DC area or beyond)

Devotchka is the best unsigned band in America according to CMJ in 2003.

they're pleasantly witty guys, too.

I have seen Cedars a handful of times, they are local and very good.

Locally, Ceremony and Dead Heart Bloom, both of whom will be playing in DC in February. :D
You should listen to my show (http://www.930.com/cgi-bin/ubb-cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=012080) sometime. There's often unsigned bands or bands on very, very small DIY labels along with bands on bigger labels who are just getting some recognition. In fact, there's always something there that hasn't even been released yet or some kind of TAU/KRR exclusive or pre-release. You'll also find some old standards thrown in for good measure. It's not your same old WOXY fare.
