quick question for you american football fans, this week there was the NCAAF final between the top two ranked teams. I don't recall the coverage and attention these games received when I was in the US, but from abroad I can see that it doesn't receive as much attention as the NCAA basketball finals. I am not talking about coverage in the foreign press, but from sites such as yahoo, nyt, espn... is it that the NCAAB is far more popular or is it the playoffs format?

The playoff format and the hype surrounding it make a large part of the difference. March Madness and it's ease for gambling make even the uninterested, interested. Smackette won't watch a single College hoops game all year, but she will fill out a bracket and watch any game where she has a team still alive.
But I think ABC did a pretty good job this year with the BCS bowls and their ratings were way up. Good matchups and good games. The Final games are closer then you think: 34.66 million viewers for the Rose Bowl, 37.5 million for the NCAA Hoops final last year. It's hard to compare the March Madness viewing to all the Bowl games because the early round hoops games feature prime teams, compared to the weak matchups of early bowl games. Add the holiday time business and the ratings won't be close. But the 4 BCS games draw a comparable audience to the entire NCAA Tournament, which is surprising to most (both draw between 100 and 110 Million viewers).

Growing up with the Bucs in the 80s when they SUCKED and their colors were frickin' red and orange, I can accept any loss.

nope, think you got the wrong photo, i can't believe a camera was around to catch one of the skins' 10 positive offensive plays
that game came down completely to bounces and luck ... all the professional columnists and prognosticators are claiming it was the redskins defense, but they were pretty much picked apart in the second half, the bucs defense (on the other hand) put together one of the best performances i've ever seen ... the turning points were just lucky bounces (brown's, cooley's, and marcus washington's fumbles being recovered by skins players, the missed call on arrington's fumble after his INT, etc, etc) ... pretty shitty game overall
-

I don't think it was luck when Sheperd dropped the game tying touchdown, or when Simms overthrew him on the next play. The Bucs just didn't execute, and when they didn't, the Skins capitalized.
When the Skins didn't execute, the Bucs failed to capitalize.
Accept your loss like a man, especially after you started the trash talking.

Not for skins fans. Pretty great if you ask me. I'd hardly call 10 points scored "picking them apart". Sure the skins offense didn't do squat, but the D made the big plays when they needed to and your guys didn't. End of story.

And btw, that photo is from the game earlier this year...skins were in all white yesterday.

perhaps instead of "luck" i should have stuck with "bounces" ... this game was decided wholly on bounces, and i'm sticking to that ...
a) simms' two picks were off of tipped balls (hats off to the skins D-line)
b) how often do you see a return like the one off of cadillac's fumble?
c) the refs missed lavar arrington's fumble after his interception, easy call badly muffed
d) the bounces from antonio brown and chris cooley's fumbles landed them back in skins hands ... it's not like the skins "wanted the ball more" than the bucs, the ball just bounced their way
the bucs offense completely outplayed the skins offense, the bucs defense turned in one of the best performances i've ever seen (especially in the playoffs) while the redskins defense was good but not dominating, and special teams was a wash (maybe even a bucs win with their kickoff returns) ..... when it really comes down to it, the game was decided on the way the ball bounced
Originally posted by vansmack:

as an insane fan of the bucs, hoyas, lightning, etc, i understand accepting losses, it's just part of the sports territory ... but i also understand when the press takes a "story line" that works well for them and runs with it, even when it doesn't hold much relevance (here it's "stifling redskins D suffocates bucs"), i'm just trying to offer what i see as the real storyline of the game
the bucs offense picked apart the redskins defense ... simms was 16/18 in the first half, and really had a very good game, the bucs offense moved consistently on the redskins D, especially in the second half ... the skins D certainly played very well, but their scheming and talent is not the reason the game was won

Dude no doubt the bounces went the skins way. And stop crying about the national media not giving the bucs d their propers. Everything I hear pretty much says that the skins were lucky to win.
But how can you say the bucs picked apart the skins d? I'd hardly call 200 yards passing and 75 yards rushing a dominating performance. The scheme gave the bucs the short passing game so they could take away the deep ball, which they did. Simms averaged 4.4 yards per pass....hardly earth shattering or dominating.
-
simms had such a high completion percentage because they couldn't throw the ball downfield. the redskins were glad to give them all those underneath passes. their secondary was beat up/retarded and they still made galloway a non-factor. i think he had like 5 passes of more than 10 yards, and three of those were to tight ends/running backs. they did NOT pick apart the redskins defense. they played entirely into their hands, actually. simms had 198 yards -- 168 net yards -- on 38 attempts. that's fucking terrible, actually. not as bad as brunell, obviously. but still pretty bad.
-
football is lame and has no strategy.
go Argonauts!

i never said it was either earth shattering or dominating .... all i said is that they picked the skins D apart, which is what 16/18 is, picking apart ... you're absolutely right that they didn't give up the big ball and that the skins D played great, made stops when they needed to, and forced turnovers, they really did ... but the bucs played their typical "pick em apart" west-coast game on offense that gruden loves to run, a lot of crossing patterns and under 7 yard passes, they just couldn't get the bomb to fall when they needed it .... oh, and galloway had 7 catches for 69 yards, surely not dominating, but he was definitely not taken out of the game
i give the redskins D a ton of credit, they played a very very good game, i just think the game was decided not by the skins D (as all the headlines say), but by bounces ... the bucs forced fumbles and tipped passes as well, but the fumbles just didn't bounce their way and the tipped passes went into the ground, instead of acting like slap shots from a defenseman tipped and redirected by a power forward into the top corner of a net
anyway, i'm done, it was an ugly game that didn't turn the way i would have liked it, congrats to the skins and i hope your offense gets better quick
speaking of the national media, this has been getting to me lately ... does anyone else find it frustrating that ESPN is basically the only major national outlet for sports news? sure there's SI, sporting news, and tons of others out there, but ESPN basically dominates the national sports scene (radio, magazines, TV) and turns their opinions into one big echo chamber ... the echo chamber is more pronounced with things like college basketball (dukie V and the ACC adulation is just too much to handle), but it really cuts across to all sports ... just gets frustrating after a while

Why oh why didn't Lawrence Taylor do the world a favor and break Theismann's vocal cords?

The ESPN Sunday Night Football Drinking Game (http://paulkatcher.com/archives/000565.shtml)
i think i've subjected you all to my rants about the sunday night football crew before, but this drinking game sums them up pretty well:
â?¢ Set yourself up with a minimum of six beers for the three-hour game. If the Ravens are playing (and they are just about every other week), grab eight.
â?¢ Take the assigned number of swigs â?? about the equivalent of one ounce, or 12 swigs per bottle/can. Do NOT drink when Paul Maguire is speaking. You might spit it up.
â?¢ If any of the "chug" criteria is met, you must finish your beer, even if you have to take a leak really badly.
DRINK WHEN MIKE PATRICK...
1 - Raves over the offensive line on a three-yard run
1 - Says a player is one of the best in the NFL when you can name 10 others at his position who are better
1 - Says the home crowd is making it too loud to hear, even though your neighbors can hear him through your TV
1 - Says "What a day in the NFL!"
1 - Says "Are you kidding me?!"
1 - Describes a play as "unbelievable," "amazing" or "incredible." Important: the play itself does not have to be remotely unbelievable, amazing or incredible
1 - Refers to a player as "one of the all-time greats"
1 - Calls a player one of the most underrated in the league
2 - Makes you lower the volume
2 - Says "Let's go down to Suzy Kolber. Suzy."
Chug - Says "Let's go down on Suzy Kolber. Suzy."
Chug - Breaks your ear drum
DRINK WHEN PAUL MAGUIRE...
1 - Prefaces any analysis with "I'm a tell ya what."
1 - Says "I'm gonna tell ya something" right before actually telling you something
1 - Says the word "watch" more than twice on any instant replay, as if you were doing anything but watching
1 - Says something you didn't already know
1 - Admits to being scared of Ray Lewis
1 - Says he talked to a player/coach earlier in the week
2 - Calls Theismann "Joseph"
Chug - Calls Theismann "an idiot"
DRINK WHEN JOE THEISMANN...
1 - Utters the phrase "like a Bill Parcells."
1 - Mentions his own playing career
1 - Points out a flaw in a quarterback's mechanics, whether or not the replay backs it up
1 - Says "What impresses me most about..."
1 - Mentions Notre Dame in any capacity
1 - Says he talked to a player/coach earlier in the week
1 - Says "If I'm the [insert team here]..."
2 - Offers a team advice "if they wanna win this game," as if they're on the fence about whether or not they want to win
2 - Refers to his punting career (one punt for one yard in 1985)
2 - Predicts a penalty that goes the other way
Chug - Refers, again, to any historical genius as "Norman Einstein."
DRINK WHEN...
1 - Ray Lewis is mic'ed up
1 - Ray Lewis is mentioned when the Ravens aren't playing
1 - A special-teams coach is said to have done "a great job"
2 - One of the three announcers accuses another of avoiding dinner checks
Chug - A drunken Hall of Fame quarterback hits on a marginally attractive sideline reporter
Chug - The Ravens are playing and anyone but Ray Lewis is mic'ed up
Chug - Any of the SFL crew mentions Ray Lewis' criminal record
-

or is that their 3rd TE/LS dave moore (who almost lost them the atlanta game)? i'm not sure if joe is as jacked as the guy in that picture

The Bucs got what they deserved. They were at home against a hobbled Brunell. Taylor and Wynn didn't finish the game and they still couldn't pull it off. Go Skins.

That is "Big Nasty" and he is the local bucs fan celeb. He was inducted into the NFL Fan Hall of Fame a few years ago, just like the "Big Dawg" from the Browns and those firemen guys from the Jets. My friend did a documentary on bucs fans and it featured him. He is a very nice guy, met him a few times. However, because of his get up and where his seats are (front section behind the visiting team at Ray Jay), he always makes it on camera.
As a bucs fan who talked smack on the board, I am willing to take whatever ribbings I deserve. I will say this, Redskins can't afford to play like they did on Saturday or else they will get destroyed by Seattle. Neither team played all that great and it was an ugly game overall. It was all about turnovers...

If the Super Bowl ends up as the Bears vs. the Pats, I think the league should mandate a return to the 1985 uniforms:

Fans â?? some of them violent â?? hit the streets of College Park and Bloomington Tuesday night following Maryland's 64-52 victory over Indiana for the NCAA basketball championship.
The Maryland crowd turned riotous, breaking the window of a bicycle shop, throwing bottles and other objects at police and lighting bonfires.
Several officers suffered minor injuries when they were struck by thrown objects, said state police Lt. Bud Frank.
Authorities made 15 arrests, with charges ranging from aggravated assault to disorderly conduct, an official said.
"This is terrible. We've finally started to lose the reputation as the Len Bias death school, and now we're known as the riot school," said student Josh Fingold, 21, referring to the 1986 cocaine overdose death of the Maryland basketball star.
In Bloomington, about 40 people were treated for injuries including burns, cuts and too much alcohol, a Bloomington Hospital official said. Flying debris caused head cuts for two state troopers, who required stitches, and minor injuries to 21 officers, officials said.
Officers used with tear gas, sending hundreds of students and fans from an intersection near the edge of the IU campus.
Police said they arrested about 30 people on charges including public intoxication, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct. Four others were charged with battery on a police officer.
The destruction included torched couches and trash bins, and toppled street signs and mail boxes.
"When students started getting pelted with bottles that's when we decided to move and disperse the crowd," Bloomington Police Capt. Mike Deikhoff said. "If the crowd hadn't started throwing beer bottles and setting fires we wouldn't have had to act."
The damage in Maryland did not appear to be as bad as after last year's Final Four loss to Duke when one bonfire caused an estimated $500,000 in damage and disrupted cable service when it burned through a fiber optic line.
This year, Maj. Jeff Cox of the Prince George's County police, said most of the revelers did not cause trouble, blaming a few rogues.
"I wish I knew why we keep having this problem. I'm hoping tonight we found the formula for taking care of it," Cox said.

You've never been to a sports event that involves any team from Philly then? [/QB][/QUOTE]
Went to the Philly-Bucs game back in '03 when we punked their asses and took the Superbowl. Never seen anything like it. I didn't even dare wear any Bucs stuff on the outside and still got threatened. Saw dudes get pushed around and beers poured on them. Philly fans are the absolute worst. I will give you that. City of Brotherly Love? Bullshit.

detroit and michigan state had a couple notorious post victory "celebrations" and how about the riot that ensued after the GnR show was cancelled in Canada, and the riot in St. Louis for some band I can't recall at the moment.

I can't be positive, but when referee Pete Morelli went under the instant replay hood to look at Troy Polamalu's interception, I bet Paul Tagliabue came on the screen and said: "Yeah, I'm going to need you to overturn this and call it an incompletion, mmkay? See, we really want the Colts to make the Super Bowl, mmkay? So just say he never had possession. Try an explanation with the term 'football move' in it, mmkay? Nobody knows what that means."

Funny you metion rgIIi as i had taped the redkins - seahawks playoff game and watch it yesterday for the first time. Looked like rgIII just isn't a very good QB. The redskins don't have a very bright future with no first round picks the next two years and no cap space this year. RGIII trade might turn out to be one of worst in nfl history.

It really has to be the worst trade ever. Three firsts and a second for a running style QB. They could have drafted Russell Wilson in the third round and had a better version of RGIII. Really no wonder the Landover NFL never wins playoff games. They are so mismanaged. Pathetic mistakes year after year.

no worries, folks, it's monday - atomicfront's trolling skills are still rusty from the weekend. he'll be back in shape in no time. patience.

trolling??? I watched a game and making commentary. I wasn't the one who made all the bad decisions on the landover team. You should switch your allegiance to the Ravens. We are going back to the Super Bowl as we just signed Elvis.

sometimes I think Amomicfront just makes up stuff to get a rise out of people....
At the very least one would have to say its encouraging that RG3's recovery is going so well!
I'm not an expert on American Football but I thought RG3 had a great season...until he started breaking down and Shanahan kept putting him in there...

he only played well when he could run. How many running quaterbacks have won a super bowl?
The point is they could have had someone better in the third round and they wouldn't have had to give up 3 firsts and a second. Especially because the redskins pick last year was so low they could have picked a star with that selection.

RG3 is just as much to blame. Football players always played injured. If a doctor clears him and if the player says he can go, what's a coach to do? Imagine if they PULLED Bobby Griff OUT of that game and they lost, there STILL would have been a shitstorm. If he stays in and wins? What's the talk? Will he play the next week. It's a shame, but it's the truth. He had a more consistent year than Russell Wilson and he proved he should be the #1 and there are more teams that would love to have him now more than ever. Russell Wilson is great IN that system, just like RG3 is in this one. Not to mention Russell in Seattle had some elements oof the same read option that wa sbeing in DC towards the end of their year. Russell Wilson had a more complete team around him than Rovert did and Robert still won the Rookie Of The Year. When he was healthy he burned Russell. When he got injured his numbers dropped. He had one of the highest QB ratings for most of the year [until his injury] and THAT isn't because he runs, it's because he was passing and completing touchdowns. Not taking a single thing awway from Russell, he was brought on a lot slower than Robert. We'll see what year 2 has in store for these 2...

I do agree with you that the coach made the right decision by leaving him in. He hobbled on one play but he still was able to make an 8 yard gain. If they had pulled him and his replacemt threw 3 interceptions people would have bee all over the coach.

i think rgthethree is just lying to everybody and doing body dope doubling during checkups, pulling shenanagans like lance armstrong or something. i couldnt think of anything else to say.

Well that is strange because there is no corelation. Did you fail the SAT's? See Death always gets himself all upset whenever sports are mentioned and he thinks his side is always right. No matter how screwed up his side is. Death is dc sports and Ratbastard is conservative politics.

i just cant stop thinking about the fact that you are six two and built like a football player. you can continue saying whatever . . . .
