according to the wikipedia page (with links to confirmation for the first three):
Lupe Fiasco
New Amsterdams
Jack's Mannequin
Son Volt
The Roots

My big summer plan was to use some of my available time off (switched jobs last year and had a ton of commitments so I had none to spare) and hit either Lollapalooza, Pitchfork or Intonation. But that was before my two best friends got engaged, both of whom are getting married in the fall. Oh well...maybe next year....
-
yeah, my plan was to return to Lolla, but we'll be on our honeymoon over that weekend now...
phooey.

im going to throw this up here because no one has posted the dates:
The three-day concert will take place in Grant Park from Aug. 3-5, and Lollapalooza promoters don't plan on announcing the 130-band lineup or putting tickets on sale for several weeks, until late March or early April.
-
I don't know if anyone is planning on going to this, but if you're down with hostel life instead of a hotel, there's a hostel less then 2 blocks from the venue and you can stay August 2nd-6th for $130 total.

Just watch out for the German junkie who will try to crawl into bed with you at 3 AM.

we stayed at the congress hotel last year...it think it was about $800 (though $200 of that was the fucking $50 a day it cost to park our car in the garage at the hotel!!! and we paid extra for the lake view room too)
not too expensive for chicago, you could do cheaper, but i dont know that you could be much closer...we could hear and see the show from our room!
-
i'm gonna be staying at Grant Park Best Western Hotel... $600 for 4 nights...I think they're sold out now.....

stay with... JOE MAMA!!! :)

This is just rumor and speculation, but I'd be SHOCKED if the Smashing Pumpkins don't play this.
-
CYHSY are in.
-
you might wanna click this....if you're planning on going! (http://www.lollapalooza.com/default.asp?fd=1&sid=9)
-
Damn...I can't get in, for some reason it's blocking pop-ups and I don't even have my pop-up blocker on.
-
Is anyone having any luck? I'm stuck in the queue.
I wonder if tickets.com is in on this. :D
-
heh, i was about to post this link... right after i got my tickets :) (don't give up - i eventually got in, ticket limit is 2)
at that price one can't argue.... looks like i'm going to lolla!
-
I'm in the queue as well. i got these tickets last year, and probably the best deal ever. Last year, I think they were $45 per.
-
I wish I could go! damn.
-
patiently waiting in the queue...

i'd pay $60 a ticket to see Daft Punk alone!
though, seeing them in a club would be WAY WAY better, and seeing as i cant go anyway. fuckitall.
-
finally in the queue...would be fun to go, I can stay with my mom or my sister! Woo-hoo!
-
Argh... stupid software patch forced me to reboot my computer while in the queue... sucks!
-
I've been sitting in this damned queue for 30 minutes...
-
Thanks to sweetcell for texting me and getting me a ticket while I was driving! Now he can use my credit card info to buy anything (j/k! don't do it!)
-
ok, who wants help?
looks like i've good some weird caching/cookie thing going on - i'm able to go directly back to the ordering page. i've just helped Joe M. (aka brokensocscene, joe marshmellow III, etc) get a ticket - he gave me his info over the phone. just ask joe :)
i realize this is questionable... you have my word that i won't do anything with your information other than buy your ticket(s). just trying to help, take it or leave it. PM me with your tel# if you want me to order for you, remotely.
update: doesn't look like it's working anymore - ticket quantity is constantly being reset to zero when i try ordering a ticket... i suspect the presale tickets might be sold out, so no use contacting me for help. sorry eros, i tried!
-
Seems you can also go through 1-888-512-7469. I'm on hold there right now.
Thanks for the effort sweetcell.

...still patiently waiting online and on the phone.
Until someone officially says they're gone I can wait.
-
I pulled up 2 tickets about 30 mins ago but decided I couldn't go...
-
I just got my 2 over the phone!
Perseverance pays off! :D
-
I tried late (on a conference call until 12:30). I've been in the queue for an hour online, and the phone is busy.
-update-
Been on hold on the phone 20 minutes; on hold online 70 minutes.
-
Fascinating. Here's what happened.
I just got through on the phone to an operator. Their system is so jammed they're taking information and will run it later. I am guaranteed tickets, though. Will get a confirmation in email later, and they're mailing tickets.
Very nice ticket agent. Clearly a small ticket company overwhelmed, but they've handled it in a really pleasant manner.
Oh yeah, tickets are $60 each. For two, TOTAL price was $121.25.
-
I got my tix over the phone too. Awesome! I wonder if Queens of the Stone Age will play? I have a feeling they will. If they do, it will SO be worth it for me.

full line-up to be announced next thursday (april 12).

I'm more apprehensive, than excited. It's bad enough to have to choose between conflicts on stages at any one festival, but now I may have to choose between cities and whether to fly back early to Baltimore to see acts at V fest that were hijacked from Lolla.
-
Got my 3-day passes by UPS the other day...it's actually pretty cool to see how they did that. I'm kind of excited, I am assuming that the Beastie Boys will play.
-
Daft Punk will be on the bill ... !

Me! Got my passes last week too.
I still wouldn't count out the Pumpkins being there. V Fest was supposed to be their first "reformed" US date, but I guess the Live Earth thing kinda kills that.
-
I'm hoping for Neko Case since she's not coming around here for awhile.

-
shit, it's looking more and more likely: daft punk, live, outdoors. throw in muse (that i'll be missing here) and a several good dance-punk acts, and the thought of tens of thousands of people freaking out to iggy, and the chances of my ass being on a plane to chi-town have just sky-rocketed.
-
FUCK thats a good lineup!
-
If this is true, I think they're still missing one more big headliner. There were rumors of NIN, Arcade Fire, Radiohead...I'm still pretty happy with it though.
-
For some reason, I don't see V-Fest topping that lineup.
-
sweet if i could see daft punk there vs shelling out 50$ or so in wherever its at in NYC - then this is great!
-
Hmmm no Neko Case. That probably means a Sunday V-Fest appearance.
-
I think the Lolla lineup is FABULOUS, and I'm psyched that I got a $60 three day pass! Woo hoo...
-
If this is real, I'm definitely heading back this year.
-
I think the line-up is great too, glad I purchased the early-bird tickets. Can't believe all the people on the Lolla board bitching about how the line-up sucks.

It wouldn't be much of an effort to top it. The only thing unique about Lolla is Daft Punk and the urban environment of Chicago which presents great post show after hour opportunities. Going Friday, and Saturday to see Daft Punk and whoever else plays those days is enough for me and I'm heading back for the second day of VFest. Now I don't feel so bad about the festivals crossing each other and I can even make it to work on Monday. And fact my ticket only cost $60 makes bailing a lot more palatable, as well as saving a hotel night. Never thought I'd be so stoked about a mediocre line up.
-

I think it's more of a perspective thing. If you're only festival in 2007 is Lolla, it's pretty impressive. But if you go to say Coachella, Bonnaroo, your local radio fest, and a host of individual shows then there's nothing special about it. Pearl Jam playing a festival is their selling point, but is that really all that great? Daft Punk is the highlight, looks like the YYY's only appearance in 2007 as well. Part of the problem is now we have so many festivals that the organizers are running out of "wow" line-ups to throw at us.
-
I'm happy with the lineup. There are several bands that I've missed or have always wanted to see. Should be fun!
-
Roky Erickson is about the only artist on that list of major interest to me, but given reviews of his show at Noisefest and that he's still a few fries short of a happy meal, makes me wonder if there wont be a last minute cancellation for him.
-

True, but most people aren't professional concert-goers.

I didn't say it as a complaint, or did I say TOO many festivals. But rather as a reality that with so many festivals basically copying one another it's difficult to get too much variety. I don't think ANY of the US festivals are on par with the best euro festivals but we have a different mentality here and more obstacles. I think it's criminal to have festivals start at 10am and end at 10pm, having "dance tents" during daylight hours, and cramming everything together so you have to choose between two great acts. But the fact that we have anything approaching a normal festival instead of these "radio shows" is good but not optimal. And don't take my comments and smear the rest of america, I don't speak for them.

True, but most people aren't professional concert-goers. [/b]
I named the most mainstream and easily attended festivals I could think of to make my point, if I was referring to "professional concert-goers" I'd put SXSW, CMJ, Noorderslag, POPCOM, ATP, Pitchfork, NXNE, and assortment of other venues where you could see 75% of the Lolla line-up at smaller, more intimate atmospheres. It's a good thing there are so many opportunities to see a lot of bands. But it makes any particular festival, especially later in the year not that much different from any other. ie. When Bjork was announced to play Coachella it was huge (and still is), but she's also playing Sasquatch, Glastonbury, Connect, Seine, and countless others. Again this is good thing, the earth is shrinking and great music is within the reach of most, but if you even just attend two festivals a year you're likely to have a 50% overlap. Again this isn't bad, but when there were fewer festivals they were more unique (not necessarily better, but different). These aren't complaints just observations.
-
this is great! i could care less that by that time Ill have seen nearly every band in nyc that i had wanted to see.
im extremely glad ill finally be able to see the fratellis. didnt even realize they were back in nyc and of course sold out in 2 seconds. and theres other bands ive just not gotten around to seeing !!! , daft punk, and hearing new interpol stuff. im beyond excited! :)
now if the dandy warhols are added, i might just faint!

I'm there. Already have flight and hotel. Can't miss the only PJ date of the year in the U.S., plus Daft Punk and another chance to see Spoon and The Roots.
I'm staying at the Chinatown hotel about a mile from Grant Park. It isn't pretty, but its dirt cheap.

hahantnahahrhahasdhhhdh
I am so freaking psyched about the lineup
I still can't decide if it is better than 2006's.
Hmm.
I guess we'll have to see how the actual experience is. All I know it's gonna rock.
Lollapalooza is love. And regardless of what other festivals or concerts you go to, just enjooyyy yourrsellf.
P.S- does anyone else throughly enjoy how tons of the lolla lineup is playing at 930?
I like it. :-)
-
And yeah there was a loooott more hip hop last year. I don't know....
hmm..
-
i'm tentative on this. i skipped lolla last year and just went to the lolla after party shows at the metro both nights.

seth, i'm with you, i don't want to make a choice yet - looks like i'm returning from vacation late on the 2nd, i don't relish the thought of getting on a plane to chi-town early the next morning. while tickets won't sell out, flights and hotels are filling up and personally, i need to make arrangements with work.
all that to say: could you give us a hint as to when the VFest line-up will be released? before the end of the month? alternately, could you leak a few more names?
i'm sure the line-up will be great and i'd rather remain local, buuuuut...
-
i'd settle for 1 more leak... :D
-
don't drink so much coffee then

i am getting the feeling seth is enjoying the heightened anticipation for this years event.

Seth, for me, it's more than just Lolla. I'm viewing it as a vacation and chance to get out of town. The V-fest is looking impressive, for sure, but I really want to go to Chicago. Next year, if you schedule it (V) a different weekend, I'll be there.
-
what's wrong with the pimlico neighborhood of baltimore as a vacation spot?
-
actually, they do a great job with Lolla
I'll just be a little busy

im with kurosawa on this one. not that dc isnt a vacation from nyc, but i can stay with my cousin who lives across the street, see family and have a mini-vacation which i really need. v-fest does look impressive tho, and it was nice to see it not being held on the jewish new year.

Talking about drawing the short straw, Interpol is a great band but to have to compete in a festival headlining role with Muse?! Poor bastards are going to be slaughtered, it's not going to be pretty. But that Cafe Tacuba Metro show just shot to the top of my to do list because I'm bailin on Sunday for Pimlico.
-
actually, lolla looks to be much more manageable than coachella was. at one point in indio, i had five bands that i would have wanted to check out playing at the same time!
my conflicts, which are all manageable IMO:
daft punk vs interpol (winner: DP)
the rapture vs. SSPU (winner: rap)
STS9 vs. cold war kids (winner: CWK)
PBJ vs. Yo La Tengo vs. !!! clusterf*ck (winner: should be !!!, but i've seen them a lot recently so TBD)
looks like walking distance between stages was shorter at coachella than it will be in lolla, based on last year's site map.

Arent' DP and Interpol on different days, do you mean Muse or ben harper?

brainfart. meant muse vs. interpol (winner: muse).

The only conflict that's going to bother me is TVOTR right up until P Jam late Sunday night.
My 2 must sees @ the event back-to-back on different stages. Something's gotta give.

ill be at interpol too :) and im most excited to see the fratellis, as its the one band i kept missing in nyc. well daft punk is right up there on that list. most the other bands ive already seen, so its just about figuring out who i most want/need to see.
for me: fratellis, interpol, !!!, CSS, LCD Soundsystem and Daft Punk. guess itll be a dance party for me that weekend :)
now if maccabees will be added id be happy
-
It is indeed a dance party on that Friday...
When is everyone leaving the DC area? I'm leaving on Friday morning at 10 am!
-
the lady and i are leaving at 8:30 am on friday, flying direct and having lunch with mom before heading over to grant park in time to catch a bit of the fratellis (damn lolla starts early each day!).
me = http://lollapalooza.com/schedule/ (http://lollapalooza.com/schedule/) ==> code: LOLLA1584307 - still needs to be de-dup'ed, i have some unresolved conflicts. family obligations might mean that i get there later than currently planned. and as i was reminded at coachella, the best laid plans get thrown out the window when a good set grabs ya :)
-
Not leaving til the afternoon, first act to see likely Black Keys. I refuse to have gay set times rule my life....anymore.
-
My flight is sometime around 7 AM.
First show I want to see for sure is Polyphonic Spree at 2:30, but check in at the hotel is not till 3. I hope the hotel will hold my bag and not rifle through it.
Some questions:
How is Son Volt live these days?
Daft Punk live or do the known-quantity of Ben Harper?
For someone who's not a fan particularly of either, Muse or Interpol?
Tapes n' Tapes put on a good show?

- your bags should be safe at the hotel, unless it's really really shady.
- dunno about son volt, never seen'em, but i'm curious.
- if you're into dance music at all, you owe it to yourself to check out daft punk
- i'd suggest muse over interpol - more exciting stage show (showmanship), virtuoso musicians
- t'n't are fun, i wouldn't say MUST-see but a good choice. at 'chella i couldn't take my eyes off the drummer - thinnest geekiest most limp-wristed drummer i've ever seen, funny to watch, damn effective.
-
I have seen Muse twice...at first I kind of thought they were cool, then just realized that they sound like a hybrid of Queen, Nirvana and Radiohead all rolled into one. I'm probably one of the few people here that thinks they're totally overrated.
-
I'll be there firstthing, courtesy of a semi work visit on Thursday.
-
We don't arrive until 12:45 on Friday which rules out the Fratellis and Son Volt/Ted Leo. I guess the first thing we'll see will be the Polyphonic Spree.
-
Is that particular hybrid a bad thing? We could play spot that influence with just about everyone, but I guess the test is whether they develop a unique identity over time, I think since album 3 they've stopped sounding like a poor man's RH/Queen, and sound like Muse. I suppose they're overrated in Europe and Asia, but here? I'm shocked they're playing this arena tour in the fall, and curious whether there will be any sell outs. I must live in a black hole because I can't imagine how they could have a fan base here large enough to play arenas. Is this an off shoot of MCR tour they did. I don't listen to the radio so I don't know if they're played there or have videos or whatever but one thing is undebatable IMO is that in a festival setting there are few better. I love Interpol and I'm going to see them in AC & Norfolk but on a big stage they don't come across well unless you're a hardcore fan, which I am but I'm still going to see Muse.

Daft Punk is the only reason Lollapalooza is relevant this year, miss them at your soul's peril.

I guess all I heard about Muse for the past couple of years is nothing but glowing praise, which of course is nice (especially for the band), but then it was almost like praise turned to hype, and the two are different. So after checking them out and really giving them a chance, I still feel like I can't listen to them without thinking about the Queen/Nirvana/Radiohead thing. And trust me, I can ignore the glaringly-obvoius influence factor thing all day, but with those guys their music just doesn't stick with me. But it's really a matter of personal taste and not an attack on the band or their fans. Shit, compared to how much crap there is out there, Muse is probably a breath of fresh air, but I just never get the urge to listen to them. Same thing with Bloc Party.

No, you're not. I pretty much can't stand them. But I also don't normally feel the need to slag off on bands that other people seem to be religious about on here. Even in cases where it is so well deserved (Muse, Winehouse).
But you definitely aren't alone.

dunno if you had a look at TM recently, but the only tickets left for the patriot center show are crappy. the floor is sold out, i'd say less than 25% of the tickets are still available... chances of sellouts are high, IMO. they do have a hit on the radio and video channels, "starlight", which has brought them a lot of mainstream exposure. i'm sure the MCR exposure hasn't hurt either. i'll be seeing them twice that week - at lolla and at the patriot center. can't wait.

No I haven't looked at Ticketmaster, I'm going to the Philly show and it's all GA and the smallest venue on the tour so a sell out wouldn't shock me. But I am in danger of Muse burn out. Already seen two festival headline sets in the last month, with two more festivals upcoming along with a headline solo gig. I'm not a Muse zealot it just kind of worked out this way, and fortunately the sets aren't merely by the numbers...while they're not drastically different they are diverse enough to avoid complete predictability and boredom.

Lolla is relevant, if nothing else because its PJ's only US show this year.
I'm a pretty big indie nerd, hence my interest in seeing Daft Punk after all these years, but don't forget about Pearl Jam. There's a lot more to them than just Ten, which is all to which most of the indie crowd seems to associate them.

Key note, only US tour date...and just by a smidge saw them in Hawaii in December. I'm seeing them at a couple of other places so not that big a highlight for me to the point I'm leaving Sunday to come back for V fest. But for those Pearl Jam heads I apologize if I disrespected their appearance, but I stand by Daft Punk is what differentiates this festival from most others even if they are playing other dates in the US. This may be Pearl Jams only US appearance this year, but Daft Punk only comes out of hibernation for live dates a couple of times a decade, the last 20 months the great exception but even then they've probably only played a little over a dozen shows in that time. They are rare, and wonderful. Pearl Jam is just wonderful.

I second that. Hawaii (no need to discuss the other great & wonderous powerhouse band that was there :D ) was my first time seeing Pearl Jam. When they ended with "Baba O' Riley/Teenage Wasteland" I went APE. SHIT. I'd heard a lotta hype about Pearl Jam's shows, and I must say they lived up to it. I didn't expect them to have, say, Mike McCready playing the guitar behind his head. I figured they'd just come out, rock hard, & bounce. But I love "rock star antics", so it was all good with me. But I digress . . . .
Here is my key question, (bnyced0, S Dot Cell, I may be lookin at people like you here) though. I wouldn't call myself a big dance/electronica fan. There's songs I enjoy, but that's neither here nor there. However, I think Daft Punk's nothing short of the shit. Their catalog is DUMB hot. And from what I've gathered from people here on the board, it's beyond just a really good show. To hear you all tell it, it's some borderline life-altering shit. I checked their tour schedule, and it seems that the only place around here that's convenient to my life is the show in BK on August 9th. I know I'll still be spent from VFest though. So, I say all that to say this: Should I just say fuck it and toss caution to the wind??? Are they really that good????
-
check youtube (daft punk coachella) and decide for yourself :)

Encouraging people to go beyond their limits for yet another live concert high isn't my intention, but yeah they are that good.
But let's keep this in context to fair, I've never seen them totally sober, or when they weren't a headliner at the end of an otherwise already great evening of music.
The one club appearance I saw was in the 90s, again reference the above state of mind.
So I guess I would only caution, being super exhausted, a week day show that requires significant travel to/from on the same day, and a show where there's no substantial foreplay before they hit the stage may not give the same impression.
OK so there are the disclaimers, but if you catch DP in the right frame of mind they'll take you over the edge to a new place...not sure if the Youtube video can do that justice, seems like there's a better google video version of the entire Coachella show, that is mesmerizing even if it's just on the computer screen.
The last time I saw them was November in Argentina, and I dragged some doubters and they left worshipping at the DP altar.

Here's my question: are Pearl Jam actually playing the Pete Townshend song/version "Teenage Wasteland" or are people still mistakenly referring to The Who's "Baba O'Riley" as "Teenage Wasteland"? Just a pet peeve of mine - they are two different songs! Though the songs have similar lyrics, they are remarkably different when played/performed.

I simply refer to said track by both names, because unfortunately some individuals are not familiar with the power & greatness of the Who. For a cultured listener as yourself, Smackie :D , the song in question which was performed was "Baba O' Riley".
P.S. Saw The Police at Bonnaroo this weekend, and they DEFINITELY didn't suck. I ain't finnin' to jump out there on some outlandish hyperbole shit like it was the greatest show I've ever seen, but in the same token, I was quite pleased. Okay, I'm catching the Police at Madison Square Garden Friday night, and not getting to Chicago until Saturday morning.
Bearman, we should exchange cell phone #s.
Do we know if Kurosawa is going this year??
-
I'm definitely going. Send me your cell phone number. I'll do the same. I'm flying into CHI Thursday night and staying the whole fest. And I'll be there from the time gates open to when they close. There are a bunch of bands I want to see that are first on stage.
-
I've got to work late into Friday, so I'm missing Daft Punk...argh. I'll be flying out on Saturday. Bags, I will e-mail you my info. But for now, I'm SO friggin' excited about my Social D road trip. I'm going to drive through Minnesota and check out the Norton's, Greg Norton's (Husker Du) restaurant. Call me totally insane, but it's really going to be a fun trip.

Has anyone stayed at the Hostelling International? I heard good things about the place and I want to check it out even for one night.

If you're talking about the one down on Congress, I stayed there in 2000 for the (then) second to last Smashing Pumpkins show at the United Center. I literally was just looking for a safe place to store my stuff and catch a quick nap before an early flight the next day. But it was modern, clean, and very well located. I think there were like four beds per room (bunk beds maybe), and sorta like gynasium bathrooms for showering and err $#@!ing. I don't think I would have spent more than a few hours over one night there, but for a quick in and out it seemed cool and it's super close to Grant Park.

To be honest, after that pumpkins show I was so bombed out that anything could've been happening in there and I would have slept right through it so unfortunately I'm not the go-to-guy for info on extracurricular activities....but wasn't there just a movie out about hostels where not so good stuff happened to horn dogs....?

MMJ will be playing with orchestral accompaniment, according to this NYT article on indie artists going symphonic:
Segue From â??Gigiâ?? to Geek-Chic Indie Rock (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/24/arts/music/24wise.html?_r=4&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&ref=music&adxnnlx=1183137405-b0xzxE2ewBBclJ7mu2vQjA)
Faced with declining attendance, pops orchestras try to lure younger, hipper fans.
<snip>
And now orchestras are even infiltrating rock events. At the Lollapalooza festival in August in Chicago, the Southern rockers My Morning Jacket will appear with the Chicago Youth Symphony. Last summer the band played Bostonâ??s Edgefest with an 80-piece orchestra. Jim James, the lead singer, said that he liked to play orchestra dates because they pushed the band out of its comfort zone.
