Title: --::[ Tape of Vertical Horizon show? (10.8.04) ]::--
Post by: chiLLii on October 10, 2004, 03:26:00 am
Hello -- I was wondering if anyone has a tape of Vertical Horizon's performance (10.8.04). There was this version of "Wash Away" with a cover of the Beatles' song "Lonely People".. it was so.. amazing.
I'd like to know if anyone has a recording of it that they could trade with me, Or could point me to where i could find it? (I've checked the forum on their site, but it's closed down..)

 thanks :-)

I remember when people used to tape vertical horizon shows ... it was about 5 years ago... then they completely sold out, became corporate stiffs, and I think tapers (and their fans) pretty much stopped caring about them ...

Nah, their fans are just five years younger. Or, five years older. Dependent on how you look at it.
 thanks :-)

there were two tapers, one copy is cut, and one has static.

 The song's called Eleanor Rigby.

This wouldn't happen to be the same person who posted on footprints now, would it?

Yes.. it is..  I posted here first, before I found out about footprints.

(and Iā??m asking so soon, because a) Iā??m not familiar with this whole taping thing  (thought it was illegal -- thought Iā??d get flamed for even Asking the question here..), and b) I figured if it Had been taped, it wouldn't be available for too long, so I figured Iā??d ask early).

And.. I posted this same question on STG (before footprints).

So when you see it there, disregard..   :-/

I was pretty sure you were going to get flamed for even talking about Vertical Horizon, but alas...

But this is what the forum is for, so good luck finding your tape.

Oh, and not to get too Barry from High Fidelity on you, but check out a couple Beatles CD's or read a couple of poetry collection books next time you're bored in Borders.  "Eleanor Rigby" is a classic that you should know.  I'm certain it was in my high school English book.  And don't take my word for it, apparently Vertical Horizon thinks you should know that as well.

someone on footprints corrected me on that, too -- i meant to mention that i now know the song is not called "Lonely People".

in fact, if stg weren't down right now .. i'd go over there and delete that post..  (i dont really know any of the beatles' songs  (sad, eh?)... but the guy next to me at the show was like "This is that song by the Beatles")..
 anyway, pardon my ignorance..

No need to trash talk about Vertical Horizon and Nu-Metal, I'll let the Allmusic goons do it for me.

 Go
 Vertical Horizon
 Review
 by Johnny Loftus

As vapid as nu-metal became once the pump backed up and started spewing its smelly backwash onto the stages of Ozzfest, the fresh-scent hallways of what the industry calls "hot AC" might be just as empty. While the metal guys' latent high-school anger and crushed-velvet posturing is pretty hard to take, at least they get to turn up the amps and kick out the jock jams.

In the beige world of hot adult contemporary, interchangeable white guys rock test-marketed riffs under a relatively distinguishable frontman's greeting-card haiku. Goofy nu-metalers may make music for chest-bumping in the arenas, but these guys are stuck writing soundtracks for the Pottery Barn.

In 1999, Vertical Horizon didn't have much with which to follow its breakthrough single, "Everything You Want." And yet, the song's percolating groove provided enough sustenance for listeners led astray by Secret Samadhi, Live's pompous follow-up to Throwing Copper. Now, Vertical has returned with Go, an album that proves the band's lack of ideas wasn't a fluke, and reaffirms their status as third-tier imitators. "When You Cry" stands in for "Everything You Want" and introduces the album's catch phrase psychotherapy. "I can't wait until you let me down," Matthew Scannell sings over store-bought modern rock. "I'm Still Here" seems to cross the band's 1999 hit with Michelle Branch's "Everywhere," which was produced by Go helmer John Shanks.

It's tiresome to keep making comparisons, but it's impossible not to when Vertical Horizon smothers whatever college rock identity it may have once had in layers of insipid radio filler. "Echo" is at once Go's hookiest and most opaque moment. As the familiar acoustic/electric, quiet-loud formula is applied yet again, Scannell indicts his band with another trite lyricism. "I don't want to be just another echo," he sings, evidently not realizing that he already is.
