The lead singer (female) of the buzz band Morningwood. She's awkward and awful.

Ted Leo is verrrrry awkward with banter, moving away from and back to the microphone 3-4 times during one attempted sentence.

The band that opened for QOTSA was called Throw Rag. I didn't find him awkward as much as I did just plain gross. But that band rocked. I thought they were fantastic, very unsettling and gross. Brilliantly sick.

I second Joey Ramone. How do you get more awkward than what essentially looks like a praying mantis as a human? He always looked like he was from another planet.

People are dissin' Sean Doe?  He's embodies all that is Rock and Roll.  And definetely no dissin' Throw Rag.  One of a kind, to be certain.  An LA staple for me for sometime.

Stevie Winwood.  At his last 930 show, he spent the entire set either facing stage left, or with his back to the audience.  It was painful and distracting.

Just when he tries to talk between songs, which, come to think of it, is rare.

I am pretty sure he probably goes whole shows without talking

Do the Jesus and Mary Chain still play with their backs to the audience, or was that just a gimmick from the Psychocandy era?

Also -- Ted Leo didn't seem awkward to me when I saw him at the Black Cat.

i'd have to add tricky to this list ... when i saw him at the club (99? 00?) he sat on the drum riser the entire show with his back to the crowd while smoking, i don't think we saw his face once ... not sure if that's his idea of "cool" or if he was just awkward

That was really just the guitarist.  Jim would sing facing the audience, but since William was trying to get all manner of tortured cat sounds from his guitar he would face his amp.  Saw them back then on the Psychocandy tour when they played college park.  They were very drunk.

I add the singer for 10 Times Big, who were around in the early 90s.  He sang the whole show with his legs tightly crossed, I kept feeling he would fall down.

 That and Cat Power.  Gads.

David Byrne?

I think he is cool, but I can see how someone might think of him as awkward. Just watch Stop Making Sense.

Cat Power's got to be the suckiest, boringest show I've ever seen at the 9:30.

HAHAHAH That's pretty funny coming from a gang who still idolize GBV, Tim Westerberg and the Pixies....btw:  Bob Dylan played shortly after Winwood's show...he's so OLD too...sheesh.

???  No one could fall asleep in a GBV or Westerberg show (I'm assuming you meant Paul Westerberg), no matter HOW old.  Hell, the crowd could be dead and they'd be jiggling a little bit.  I think you missed the point, as in not just that Winwood (and hence his crowd)is old, but he's boring, inciting old and young to fall asleep....

Markie is a gang?

I'm pretty sure Markie doesn't care for GBV or Dylan.  I have no idea who Tim Westerberg is.  Is he related to former Replacements frontman Paul Westerberg?

Yes, they are brilliantly sick. Yet, I was sick by the end. In a good way, I suppose  :D

Are you saying you don't know Tim Westerberg, principal of Littleton H.S.? You're slipping.

Natalie Merchant - slightly awkward? Dances a little odd, gazed look and painfully shy.

HAHAHA Even when Westerberg takes a quick nap behind the drummer?

Nope, sticking with my story:  Saw Pixies three times and needed NO DOZE.  I find a lot to like in much of Winwood's work.  Don't need board's permission to hold my own opinions and tastes.  BTW:  At Dylan's show in April 2004, I'd guess over half the crowd was under thirty.  Just because a performer is old doesn't necessarily mean the fans are...

I think the lead singer of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is probably the most uncomfortable frontperson I've ever seen.
