Title: Morrissey coming to DC?
Post by: saintangelsin on March 06, 2007, 03:29:00 am
I've been following this rumor of a tour on I think this is his offical fan zine...

 www.true-to-you.net (http://www.true-to-you.net) states this:

U.S. tour information, opening date and onsale date details
 4 March 2007

All date and venue information for Morrissey's forthcoming U.S tour will be announced next week. The tour will begin in Stockton (California) on 27 April at the Bob Hope Theater. All tickets for all shows will be available on 17 March.

 Â»
 North America tour information
 19 February 2007

Morrissey will undertake a 40-date tour of North America beginning 27 April. Venue details and ticket prices will be announced within the next two weeks. Tickets for all concerts will go onsale on the same day.Support for all dates will be Kristeen Young.
 -------------------------------------------------
If this is the case, I can't help but wonder where is he going to play in DC? How much are tickets? and Will there be a pre-sale? I just can't wait for him to comeback and play. I saw him last time and it was just wonderful.

Last time, he played at DAR.  Tickets for the orchestra seats were about 60 bucks, after ticketmaster.  I thought the sound kinda sucked, but it also didn't matter b/c it was Morrissey.

Personally, I'm hoping for a summer Merriweather show this time around, but I don't think that will happen.

The sound sucks at DAR regardless. I hope to God he comes to S. Florida, I'll even plant some Gladioli(sp?) in my garden in preparation!!!

If Badly Drawn Boy has not sold out....go see him, he's very entertaining and talented, but don't expect a polished, co-ordinated performance, that's not his thing.

I dont know where he's gonna play, but I do know that I'll be there, I saw him in '04 and it was a great great show, opening with how soon is now? and closing with theres a light that never goes out...

i don't agree with that.  i've been to DAR over a dozen times now, and my acoustic experiences there have generally been positive.  i've always had decent seats (front half of orch or box number below 24) so maybe sound is worse at the back of the hall where reflection might be more of an issue - dunno, can't tell ya.  but to date i have no complaints about sound at DAR.

I'm with the one person about Merriweather. That would be rather nice, but for some reason I get the feeling he'll play something like DAR or Warner Theatre. He is into those sorts of places.

Everytime I have been to DAR (with the exception of Kids in the Hall), I have either been in the front or in the box seats, and every time, the sound has been subpar.

Every time I've been to DAR the sound has been fine.  Maybe it's not the sound thats bad, maybe its the bands that you see.

It was only a matter of time before some chump came up with that one....

I can speak with some knowledge (since I've actually mixed quite a few shows there) and say that DAR is not highly regarded by most audio engineers. It was designed in the pre-amplified sound era and is highly reflective (marble, glass ceiling, plaster walls) so louder SPL shows tend to not sound so great there IMHO.

I have a feeling that they're going to announce the show for DC next week. The website has been updated a few times and so far, only half of the tour dates have been announced. also, tickets will go on sale on march 31st.

I've been to several shows at DAR (Morrissey, Pixies, Sonic Youth, Wilco, Pearl Jam) and the sound has always been fine..

yes, but the tour is a 40 date tour. if you notice NYC isn't until the very end of June. What has been announced thus far only goes up to the very beginning of June. It wouldn't make much sense to have such a huge gap in between dates, thus the reason I'm thinking there are more dates to be announced.

Atlantic Records has developed an advanced electronic security tag that prevents heterosexual men from walking out of a store with a James Blunt CD.

Morrissey is not coming to DC. He is coming to VA and MD, though:
Mon July 2 VIENNA, VA : Wolf Trap
Tue July 3 BALTIMORE, MD : Rams Head

As a VA resident, I think I'm headed for Wolf Trap.

Does anyone have presale info? Tickets are on sale March 31, but seat location is pretty important at Wolf Trap.

Looking forward to seeing him at Wolf Trap... Great summer venue (nice staff too, unlike that piece-of-shit Merriweather / Nissan)

Steely Dan is coming to Wolf Trap.  Maybe Morrissey will get on stage with them and belt out DO IT AGAIN..?  They should rename Wolf Trap: Jurassic Park, because of the dinosaurs.

OMFG....HE'S COMING TO S. FL...BOCA RATON OF ALL PLACES, BUT WHAT THE HELL. HOW DO I GET ON THE PRE-SALE THINGIE AGAIN?

Rams Head Tavern = Annapolis  (smaller, seated)
Rams Head Live = Baltimore  (larger, more like 9:30)

I personally never had a problem with the staff at Merriweather, apart from the fact they stole 8 cans of Boddies out of the panniers on my motorcycle while I was inside enjoying the show....fuckers!!

I am seriously excited. My plan of action is to get tickets for Ramshead first. Then maybe if lawn seat tickets for Wolf Trap are like 18- 20 bucks, then maybe I'll go to that one as well. It would be cool to have a picnic (they still let you bring in your picnic basket right?) and just have a small party with friends. It would be totally rad.

Considering that the Norva is about the same size as Ramshead, that's a pretty great price honestly. I have a feeling it'll be that much in Baltimore.

Last time for Moz, shit seats were like 45 bucks and good seats were 55 and that was at DAR Constitution Hall. So really 40 bucks for general admision at Norva is pretty sweet.

I suppose the tickets are only available through ticketbastard...or will it be tickets.scam?

I need to pre-register so I can just 'one-click' or whatever it is we have to do these days.

it's not that great of a view, and the video screens are nothing like those at mega-amphitheatres

that said, it's my favorite lawn atmosphere ... as long as you leave the smack and meth at home, you can bring pretty much whatever the hell you want with you ... you'll see people with full fine-dining picnic dinners replete with bottles of wine, and (depending on the band) you'll see people with a cooler full of bud ice and some tostitos ... and if you get down close enough on the lawn the view really isn't that bad, but you need to be in the pavilion if you really want to get into the show

How quick of a sellout should I expect for Moz? Tickets for Norfolk go on sale Saturday at 10am and I'm going to be at the NorVa Sunday for Decemberists. Do you guys think I'm safe waiting to avoid the ticket charges?

The lawn is pretty small at Wolf Trap so get there early if you want a decent view. Don't go there hungry 'coz  you won't find decent food there (just chips, hotdogs, and pretzels last year) - eek...bring your own food.

Wolf Trap's website is www.wolf-trap.org (http://www.wolf-trap.org) and they have the summer line-up on there, with the on-sale for these first shows happening this coming Sat 3/31. However Morrissey isn't listed yet.  There's a blurb on the site that says another set of shows will be announced on 4/9, so that's probably when they'll make the official announcment, and the tix for the Morrissey show will likely go one sale the following weekend 4/14.  Just keep on eye on the WT website to be certain.  Tix are usually sold thru tickets.com but the best bet is to actually go to Wolf Trap and buy them at the box office .. no extra fees that way.  Tix for inside the pavillion will probably be in the $40+ range, and lawn will probably be $25.  Keep in mind there are no video screens for the lawn at WT.  But the lawn at WT is a good time, and you can bring in coolers, food, wine, etc.  You just gotta be there when the turnstiles open (around 5:30pm) and score your decent lawn spot otherwise you could be SOL, view-wise. And then you spend your time waiting for the concert drinking and having dinner; definitely the best lawn-concert environment in the area.

He played a bunch of Smiths songs at the DAR show.

I think those tickets were almost 60 dollars for orchestra, so I expect the wolf trap tickets to be about the same. (that includes ticketmaster "fees")

I wouldn't expect Morrissey ticket prices to top:

 Aretha Franklin: 40/25
 Steely Dan 50/35
 Tony Bennett: 42/25
 Chris Isaak: 40/25

In Chicago last November he played:

 Panic
 William, It Was Really Nothing
 Girlfriend in a Coma
 How Soon Is Now?
Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want

But he also did great solo songs The National Front Disco, Everyday is Like Sunday, and Disappointed. I thought it was the best solo show of his I've ever seen. Here's a live version of William: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZaywfqk8xE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZaywfqk8xE)

If you don't like his solo stuff you should probably stay home. The body of work since The Smiths disbanded is double what The Smiths created, there were tours where he didn't play any Smiths and the fact that nearly a half a dozen creep into the set is pretty remarkable.  But this is a Morrissey show, if you want Smiths only there are a number of cover bands or you could just play the albums at home, there are numerous bootlegs that may fill the bill.  But it's your lost, The Smiths catalog is superb and I saw them live three times but a Morrissey show is still to be cherished despite what may seem to be a paltry number of songs from the past IMHO.

I most likely will. But then again Wolf Trap is a beautiful setting and we could take the kids, have a picnic, enjoy some wine so maybe it might be worth it for even 5 songs.....

So do we think there will ever be a proper Smiths reunion? (and by proper I mean Morrissey/Marr - I could care less who plays drums and bass)
Title: Re: Morrissey coming to DC?

If my unreliable memory serves me, during the last tour in DC (at DAR), he played
 How soon is now
 Last night I dreamt
 Bigmouth strikes again
 Still ill
 There is a light

I don't think there will ever be a Smiths reunion tour, but I never thought there would be a Police reunion either. Then again, I don't think there were ugly intra-Police lawsuits.

A Smiths reunion is the only show that could ever lure me to the Nissan Pavilion or the Virgin festival (not that they would likely play at either; I'm just sayin').

The body of work since The Smiths disbanded is double what The Smiths created thus the dominate part of the set list, in fact there were early tours in his solo career where he didn't play any Smiths at all so the fact that nearly a half a dozen creep into the set is pretty remarkable.  But unmistakably this is a Morrissey show, if you want a Smiths only set or even majority Smiths there are a number of cover bands out there, alternatively you could just play all the albums at home, or perhaps one of the numerous bootlegs may fill the bill.  However,  it's your lost, while The Smiths catalog is superb and the three times I saw them live spectacular a Morrissey show is nothing to sleep on and can be cherished in its own right,  despite what may seem to be a paltry number of songs from the pastâ?¦ IMHO.

I am a huge smiths fan. But I also love some of Morrissey's solo work too. I saw him in DC the last time he played. I felt it was well worth it. He did like 5 smiths songs, but also did a few songs from early in his solo career (which are pretty high quality too in my opinion)

Here's the set list he did last time he was in DC:

 How Soon Is Now?
First Of The Gang To Die
 November Spawned A Monster
Such A Little Thing Makes Such A Big Difference
 Bigmouth Strikes Again
 Let Me Kiss You
The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores
Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me
 Subway Train/Everyday Is Like Sunday
How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel?
 Now My Heart Is Full
 Rubber Ring
 Irish Blood, English Heart
 I Like You
 You Know I Couldn't Last
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out

Whoever said Still Ill was unfortunately wrong, but I've heard that he's been playing that one a lot lately on tour. My friend saw him a year ago in Oklahoma and said he did that song!

To the guy who's debating about going with his wife, just go. I swear it'll be a good time for all. I mean even if you only like his first two or three solo albums, I think you should atleast have a good time. I look at it this way, it's my closest chance I have to seeing the Smiths.

Worth the price of admission right there, though "Headmaster's Ritual" would make it almost perfect (with Johnny Marr's presence required for actual perfection).

I think his early solo stuff is good for the most part, then his albums went a bit hit and miss, with still at least three good songs on each album though. His last two albums have been nothing short of brilliant...imho of course.

Then again I think Strangeways is a great album but most think it's shyte so I'm probably outside the box on this subject. I also think How Soon is Now is one of the weaker Smiths songs.

Bressner, just go you old grump. And get some flowers for your kids to take on stage to the lord of misery!  ;)

Presale for Baltimore is tomorrow. Google "true to you" and you'll find it. No presale announced for Wolftrap yet, but the Wolftrap ticket sale date is 2 weeks after Baltimore's.

I saw him do "The Headmaster Ritual" at the Apollo in Harlem and it was pretty awesome, even though it takes three guitarists to play the Johnny Marr part.  He also did "A Rush and A Push..."

He did HSIN?, "Girlfriend in a Coma," "Panic," "William, It was Really Nothing," and "Please,Please" at his last show in LA.  Although I was more excited that he's playing "Disappointed" and "National Front Disco" again.  Yay Your Arsenal!

wow, $100 for orch pit?  in the past orchestra pit has usually only been $10 more than regular orchestra.

i've sat up there before...its ok if you REALLY love the performer, otherwise its nosehair city

center front orchestra are pretty decent seats at the Trap

actually, if you ask me, all seats at Wolftrap are decent...i've never had a bad seat there

It looks like if you just asked for 1 ticket, you got a much better seat than if you asked for 2 or more tickets. I could only pull row N by asking for 1 ticket. I needed 3, so we are in row R center.

I continue to find it annoying that the best seats are often not at the presale, but instead at the general sale. (Unless you don't mind paying $100 for orchestra pit!)

Presales aren't usually designed to get you the best seats.  They're designed to give you the best  opportunity to get seats.  Less competition.  Easier access.  Sometimes that leads to great seats.  Sometimes it means you avoid a show selling out in 4 seconds.  And I think most presales offer a little of everything.  Seats right up front as well as further back.  But they don't claim ALL of the really good seats.  I think that's fair.

Someone said they got seats in Row D.  If you don't want to pay for the pit, it's hard to do much better than Row D.

Being on the lawn at Wolftrap is a much more pleasant experience than being in the amphitheater, anyway. That is, as long as it doesn't rain.

I know many of you need alcohol to enjoy a concert. If you're on the lawn, you can bring your own alcohol in and drink it right there. If you're down in the seats, you can't.

Will DJ Charlie entertain the lawn people with some fresh new tunes during the Morrissey show?
Title: Re: Morrissey coming to DC?

I'm going to have to miss that one, for aforementioned reasons.

But can I also add that I think it's absurd that Wolftrap (and Birchmere, not sure about other venues) would charge full admission price for a two week old lap baby?

I see the point about Wolftrap donors getting first chance at seats. That seems fair.

I think that people who buy at presales are generally bigger fans, and I think they should be rewarded for doing research to find the presale or being on the fan club mailing list. Maybe the very fact of the presale is its own reward, but I think the best seats should be released at the presale. I think at general sales, the best seats are often grabbed by people who plan to resell them. I could be wrong, but that's my opinion.

I personally don't find that there is a better view at any area venue than inside the venue at Wolf Trap - the closer the better is a given.  The sightlines and sound are better than anywhere else.  If you're lucky enough to sit up front, you don't have to look up and hurt your neck all night long either.  The stage is at a reasonable height.

Wow, I read somewhere in this thread that the Pit was $10 over the rest of in-house.  That's going back a way.  The pit has been $75 got most performances over the last several years.  There have been one or two other performances where the pit has been $100.  They are definitely the exception and not the rule.  If you get the opportunity to sit in the pit there, it's definitely some of the best seating you'll ever have.

As far as drinks etc - no, you can't bring anything into the pavilion (water only).  But, you can get there as early as you like - pack whatever you like in your cooler, and hang out off to the side.  It's very easy to get in and out of.  Of course, if you want to consume throughout the show, you'll need to be on the lawn.  But, they don't even inspect the contents of your cooler - bottles of hard liquor, wine, beer - whatever you like - bring it.

For six tickets, I think those are great seats (look to be just off the aisle near the center).

My favorite Wolf Trap scenario is to show up with a picnic basket, some wine or beer, and sit on the lawn over to the side during before the show (and usually during the opener).  When the headliner's about to start, head in to sit and enjoy (and see).  I don't want to show up as early as you need to in order to get good lawn placement for a band I actually want to see.

That reminds me when I saw Morrissey in Key West and he was singing "Shoplifters of the World Unite" and about 20 people rushed the stage during the line "a heartless hand on my shoulder, a push and it's over" and BAM, that was it, show's over.

Shite, he better be resting up for MSG then or there'll be hell to pay!

Morrissey regrettably had to end his show at Boston's Bank Of America Pavillion last night after 30 minutes due to a throat infection that made it impossible for him to continue. The audience of almost 5000 strong experienced a fantastic opening 7 numbers that included classics The Queen Is Dead and The Last Of The Famous International Playboys. In the intro to National Front Disco Morrissey explained to the audience that he was ill and said "unfortunately it will not just be the emotions cracking tonight but my voice as well." Three songs later he was unable to continue and the show came to a cose. Morrissey was seen by a doctor immediately and put under strict orders not to sing for 3 days. As a result the shows in Northampton, Mass tonight and Philadelphia on Friday night have also been postponed. It is hoped that new dates will be announced for each city in the next 48 hours. All tickets will be honoured for the new dates. The tour will continue in New York at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night as scheduled.

Shite, he better be resting up for MSG then or there'll be hell to pay!

The tour will continue in New York at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night as scheduled. [/b]
uh oh.. if he only plays 20 mins in MSG and leaves ill be pissed. im also now debating paying $75 to see the cure there. man the prices are steep but its the f'ing cure! oohhh what to do. so many concerts     :(    [/b]
He'll be fine by Saturday, and he'll slog through the show even if he isn't.  It's going to be recorded (video) just like the hollywood bowl show as the signature gigs of this leg of the tour for a new DVD, and even if he sounds like shite they'll just overdub the vocals from a different date.  In any case, it's Saturday night in NYC it's not like there's nothing else to do.

And for the record your Cure tix are worth every freakin penny, no worries there, you'll get your money's worth and then some.

I'm hoping he doesn't cancel on Tuesday!  That would put a damper on the week.  (but it's okay b/c Wed, I'm leaving for Cedar Point to ride roller coasters)

yes according to Pollstar, a decision about further dates will be announced on Monday.  So we won't know til Monday whether the concert is happening at Wolf Trap that night (or even in Baltimore on Tuesday).  Guess we'll all just have to stay tuned .... Here's the blurb:

 Morrissey Goes On Sick Leave
 Updated 15:11 PDT Fri, Jun 29 2007
Feeling a bit under the weather Morrissey has postponed tomorrow night's Madison Square Garden show.
The singer fell ill earlier this week while performing in Boston. In addition to the Garden date, Morrissey was also forced to postpone shows in Northampton, Mass., and Philadelphia.
At this time Morrissey's people are trying to rescheduled the missed shows, and plan on making an announcement this upcoming Monday.

I can get you two together also -- another friend has a ticket, so he can sit with us and you can have both his tickets.  Front row of the rear orchestra center section (AA), seat 112

MUTHA PH^&*(*^$#@!!!!!!!!!  The only reason I didn't go ape shit about the $$$$$$ I wasted flying from Asheville to NYC for the show cancelled on Saturday was because I had tonight to look forward to.  I usually blow it off when I've read about his cancelled shows over the years because I've thankfully never had one cancelled on me, but two in a week?  What the phuck did I do to the scheduling gawds, I cancelled Werchter to be here for this shit!?  Bloody hell.

If there's any silver lining (of course there's not but) it's that a smiths tribute band is still going to play.  On Saturday a tribute band based in nyc named The Son & Heirs played BB King's and while it was no substitute, with enough Goldenschlager a good time was had by all, .. Gawdammit.

Email I received from Ram's Head.
A free tribute band show will take Moz's place. A nice gesture...but that will not help those who are still ill over the whole situation.

 MORRISSEY SHOW POSTPONED!

Morrisseys concert at Rams Head Live scheduled for tonight, the 3rd of July, has been postponed due to illness.

On June 26, Morrissey was forced to leave the stage in Boston after only seven songs. A viral infection had taken its toll on the singers voice, ultimately causing the postponement of that date, as well as dates in Northampton, Philadelphia and New York at Madison Square Garden. With hopes of resuming the tour as scheduled, Morrissey performed last night July 2 at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Virginia. Following that performance, it became clear that Morrissey is still suffering from the viral infection that caused the postponement of last weeks dates. Despite the shows resounding success, the performance took its toll on the singers voice, and unfortunately, Morrissey is too ill to sing again tonight.

Girlfriend in a Coma, Baltimores Tribute Band to Morrissey and the Smiths, will perform tonight for FREE at Rams Head Live. The Band, originally planned to attend tonights Morrissey concert, will celebrate the music of Morrissey in his absence this evening. The four piece tribute act will take the stage at Rams Head Live at 8:30pm. Morrissey ticket holders and guests are invited to join us for this free concert. For more information on Girlfriend in a Coma, please visit www.morrisseytribute.com. (http://www.morrisseytribute.com.)

Rams Head Live and Morrisseys representatives are currently in the process of working on securing a rescheduled date for this performance. We hope to make an announcement soon. Any tickets held for tonights show July 3 will be honored for the rescheduled date. If a ticket holder is unable to attend the rescheduled appearance, refunds will be available at the point of purchase.

Thank you for your understanding and patience as we deal with these unfortunate and unexpected circumstances. More information will be made available as it is obtained.

i don't have it in me to do something like that. i just think i should do everything i can to be front row center:
 a) i like that spot
 b) i'm an idle seventeen year old with no job
 c) i didn't have class today and getting by getting there early would mean i could study latin for a long time without thinking of a place to go because i don't know baltimore.
 d) a general admission morrissey show doesn't come too often

anyway, it really sucked getting told by the parking attendant that morrissey was too sick to perform.

For what it's worth they ALL usually are.  Only pretty hard core fanS can put up with these type of groups, and since this type of fan knows all the lyrics the crowd usually sings louder than the fake moz and with a couple of pints in ya it turns into a big Smiths group karoke, ala Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I remember seeing Morrissey at Merriweather years ago and he threatened to stop the show if the security didn't stop 'throwing' his adoring fans off the stage....needless to say they didn't - end of show!

Jumping up on stage to give the loved one a hug was all part of the show, and the security acted more like traffic cops so it didn't get out of control, but maybe American liability issues don't allow it at all. (fucking lawyers - except smackie)

Baltimore ticket holders, you might not want to read this...

The backing band was amazingly strong. Finally, the band that he deserves (even if they were dressed like cater-waiters).

My favorite part was the Genghis Khan-style gong that was struck during the end of How Soon is Now.

If anyone's interested, the weird intro "music" to the show can be found  here (http://www.last.fm/music/Big+Hard+Excellent+Fish) or  here (http://brixton75.imeem.com/music/W_WljW-6/intro_big_hard_excellent_fish/). (First link is better but doesn't seem to be working right now.)

"An announcement will be made as soon as possible as to whether it is possible to reschedule any of these shows, and in the meantime ticket holders should maintain possession of their tickets."

ive seen that at every moz show ive been to since the early 90s or so? when has it not been a part of the show when someone (or lots of someones) tries to get on stage with moz and then he leaves the stage 20 mins later      :)     [/b]
still waiting... anyone?  anyone?

and what's the point in the end - to give Moz a hug?  to freak him out, or to see if he remains calm while a fan is tackled by the bouncers?  or is the point just to say that you're on stage with moz and try lasting as long as possible before being kicked off?  i really don't get it. [/b]
Saw the tribute band last night . . . . They were surprisingly solid.  It was a great time.  Met some cool people.  People from this board . . .    :D    But I digress . . . .

After asking 5 die-fuckin-hard Morrissey fans last night for an explanation about the whole stage-rushing thing, I was told it was something that originated during Smiths shows.  The Smiths invited people onstage during their shows, so that was the origin of it.  After that, it took on a life of its own . . . .

On the flipside of that theory, some cats are just plain crazy.  Another guy whom I asked for an explanation said AND I QUOTE,

"Morrissey is like Jesus Christ.  The man is a vegan, he's asexual, he does not pollute his body.  I just wanted to touch him & feel his pureness.  I'm not even gay, but it's just the love.  Touch the pureness, release, then let it go . . . "

 Pause.

BTW, this guy above in question will have seen Morrissey 27 times by the end of the tour.       This is not a misprint.

So there's your crash course on Morrissey stage-jumping 101.

I don't understand what the problem is... it looks like after Morrissey plays Myrtle Beach, Ram's Head has multiple dates available.  What's the hold-up?

I heard DIRECT from from someone that works with booking @ Rams Head, "We are working with Morrissey's people to find a feasible date.  We would have hoped to do a date this (July) month but the club is booked through the end of the month."

If a date doesn't pop up in the next week or so, expect an August date.  All info (unconfirmed) I've heard at this point would point towards a rescheduling as opposed to a cancellation.  Morrissey's pretty adamant about his fan base, so just stay tuned in I guess . . . . If I hear anything else, I'll let you all know.
