Title: The Who
Post by: Bags on March 07, 2007, 03:25:00 pm
This show is listed on Verizon Center's website as 7:30.  There's an opener, Rose Hill Drive.

Usually Verizon Center's ticket time is the time of the first band.  I'm trying to get an idea when The Who will actually go on.

Has anyone gotten reports from other shows, or know where I might look?

 THANKS

I heard 8:30ish from a guy who has seen the Who a lot on this tour.

ROSE HILL DRIVE - three-guy band that rocks well.  V-e-r-y Zeppelin-esque; nice hooks and approach.    I've seen 'em twice, incl DC9 -- good sonic blast; hope the band translates reasonably well to an arena full of people who don't know 'em.
Pete Townshend somehow found 'em and really embraced the group; thus giving this opening slot.

Got me a ticket...and after spending the last 2 hours listening to old Who I have to say I am so ridiculously excited. I know I shouldn't get my hopes up, but I'm just happy that I'll get to hear some of these songs live. I know that what was probably one of the best rock'n'roll rhythm sections is dead and gone, but given the reports I've heard from people, the still put on a good show. Bags, hope to see you there!

You won't be disappointed.  Zak Starkey on drums is awesome and the new bass player is solid.  They were great at the Virgin Festival, even my 14 year old son and his friend were impressed.

Outside of the "Moon is dead so The Who suck!" crowd, I've heard nothing but good things about the current lineup.

We'll be there too, bearman.  Look for us.   Don't forget the earplugs.

Great show.  Roger's voice was very strong and the band rocked.  They sounded as good as they did the first time I saw them on their 1st farewell tour in the 80's.  Zac Starkey is an awesome drummer,  Playing for The Who allows him to show his chops a bit more than he can with Oasis.

Rose Hill Drive were very good too.  Power rock/blues trio, very retro-reminded me a little of Wolfmother.

The main part of the show was really good, but it wasn't until the encore that they went from good to friggin' amazing. "Naked Eye" was superb, but then all the songs from Tommy blew me away. SO happy that I went to the show. Pete is still one hell of a guitarist.

Does the new bassist's bass sound like a bleeding VC-10?

It's the same bassist as The Rolling Stones.

Ummmm . . . I doubt I saw Darryl Jones there last night.  I was in the 16th row on the floor, & I think I would have been able to scope out a black man with dreads.  Yeah.

Since I'm such a nice guy, I will post my view of rock greatness from last night.  The Who are the shit & Pete Townshend's windmill may be the greatest rock star antic of all time . . . The following images have been brought to you courtesy of Heineken & Grey Goose Vodka . . .

The last I heard Pino Palladino is playing bass for The Who.  He took over on short notice after Entwhistle died.  He's worked with The Who, Clapton, and a ton of others.  But, I don't believe he's worked with the Stones...

Good seats.  Section 3 (Pete's side), Row O.  I'm kinda a concert snob. LOL. Aside of 9:30 of course, if I can't sit in the first 20 or better rows on the floor, then I ain't going.  Concerts are my (getting expensive as hell) drug.

My cam is OK. A Nikon Coolpix 5.1 MP.  Cool for concerts, but not the kinda shit you write home about, though.

Sweetcell, e-pal o' mine (LOL),

Since I try to be a stand up cat & a man of my word plus I just happen to have my camera here at work, here's a preview of some of the Peppers flicks I took.  I'll get you the rest later this weekend.  (I procrastinate like a motherfucker.  My sincerest apologies, fam.)  I shot some video of The Who & The Peppers as well.  YouTube's on my office's banned websites list, so I can't access it from here at work.  I'll up some of it when I get home.

I was 6 rows back in Section 120, so just off to the side. It was a fantastic seat. I couldn't imagine being up in the nosebleeds.

I forgot my camera xfer cable, so I gotta get you the Peppers flicks later.  Far as the seat snob thing, (LOL) thus far I haven't had to not go.  But my luck has to run out sometime soon.  On the flipside of that though, once I hear some legendary/favorite group is in the area (by area I mean as far as here to NY) my desire/mission to attend approaches Jack Bauer like levels.  For example, my early Christmas/New Year's present to myself was to fly to Honolulu to see Pearl Jam open for U2.  Words can't describe that experience so I won't try.  Ironically though, Pearl Jam ended their set with "Baba 'O Riley/Teenage Wasteland."  Needless to say, I proceeded to go APE. SHIT.  haha

P.S. The 2nd encore for U2 was Eddie Vedder & Mike McCready coming back out with U2 to do "Rockin' In The Free World".  WOW!  And that was AFTER Billie Joe from Green Day came out to do "The Saints Are Coming".  AFTER I randomly bump into Kid Rock & Scott Ian (Anthrax) while purchasing Heiniken - who for some reason were nice enough to give me a backstage pass.  Experience. Of. A. Lifetime.  (Yes, sweetcell my e-brethren I will send flicks of that as well.)

I'm a seat snob, but it's just getting way too expensive for bigger shows.  I just can't justify the $200+ price.  I'll probably eat my words eventually, but I can't imagine paying that much for any one band, unless it's in a club or somewhere tiny.

I usually end up going straight for the 2nd price level seats.  They're usually not bad and they're about $100 cheaper than the 1st price level.  That'll usually put you on the back of the floor or close on the sides.

That's what I did for The Who.  I ended up in 111.  That was fine by me.

I can't knock you for that.  Concerts are getting kinda crazy price wise.  But I look at it this way, that $205 was spent for a PRICELESS experience.  It's not like I'm ballin' like that, cause I'm not.  But I do work hard so I can afford to nice shit like this.  I'm young, single, plus have no kids and I haven't hit 30 yet.  These are the best years of my life, & it'll be kinda cool to prop up Director Jr. on my knee one day & be like "Daddy was cool once upon a time."  LOL. My scale pretty much applies to a $450 cap for KILLER seats.  That's what I paid to see the Stones, so that's my scale for TOO expensive.  Only a SELECT few groups are worth that to me.  Much as I love the Who, I wouldn't have paid $450 to see them.  But by today's standards $205 for 15th row seats seems fair to me.  As far as my $450 cap limit, only the Stones, U2 (fortunately U2's floor seats are GA and FAR cheaper @ $60), Michael Jackson, & Pink Floyd (never gonna happen) are worth that to me.  The Police are worth that (TO ME) as well, but luckily I scored 8th row Center stage in Hershey Park for $260.  I'm AMPED for that, fam.

It's worth it, cause I feel the energy on the floor in that area is WAY different.  The energy on the floor is indescribable.  There's something cool about being able to look right up & see your favorite group/rock/hip-hop gods standing right over you pumping out classics in your ear.  It's a beautiful thing.  You can't put a price tag on utopia, and that's what concerts are to me.  There's something special about 20,000 black, white, Spanish, Asian, etc. people becoming colorless & just stopping time for 2 hours (2 and a half with encores   :D  ).  I'm not an emotional person by any stretch of the imagination, but concerts touch my heart like no female on the planet aside of my mother & like 1.5 ex-girlfriends never could.  Different strokes for different folks, I guess . . . . So in a nutshell, that's why I don't mind the price tags.  But the escalating prices are starting to blow me . . .   :D
