Start your griping here!
-
i got exactly what i wanted. thank you, 930.
-
after feverishly refreshing from 9:58am - 10:01am, i got my tix
-
got mondays with no issues!
-
I got mine ok for sunday night. what night did everyone chose?
-
If no legs get broken, this whole thing will be a letdown.
-
Monday.
-
sunday, only had to refresh 3 times.
-
Sweet...got tix for both nights! :)
-
are they sold out already? I can't get any number or day to come up with availability...luckily i snagged 2 for sunday!
-
I got 2 tickets for Monday. YAY!
-
got monday at 10:02
went back and got parking
just for a lark I checked mondays again at 10:07, they say no tixs available
-
Sunday is becoming a challenge...I managed to get 3 but need 1 more!! I got Monday no problem.
-
wow, looks like both nights are about to sell out
-
i was expecting a first 10 minute sell-out, and i'm frankly surprised that this show is at 930 club (even for two nights) ... the new pornos alone could probably sell out two nights at the club ... this definitely seems like a DAR-size show (maybe two nights there) to me
-
Agreed. There was a lot of tough talk, especially with ladies threatening beatdowns. What a horrible way to lead into the holiday weekend...

got into work late and thought it was definitely over. palms sweaty and raced over to the computer. after 5 tries....I GOT IN! 2 for monday
-
Managed to get my last Sunday night ticket. Weird...I could only buy 3 first time around, then managed to snag an extra for a friend. This was definitely a fast one. Just goes to show, you never know who is clued in to these. It's going to be a fun couple of nights, that's for sure.
-
Had no problems getting in for Sunday, but my friend who was getting Sunday got locked out and ended up with Monday. System was only a little slow, but not too bad.
I hope it's as easy for Philly tomorrow morning :)
-
Things are really much easier when there is no pre-pre-pre-pre-sale. All the tickets up for grabs at one time is so much better.
-
Got 2 for Monday at 10:30 am so they're still selling at this point.
-
The sold out sign is popping up for Sunday, Monday is close to selling out I think. Seems like all my friends that want to go are stuck in meetings.
-
Both shows are now sold out.
-
It appears Monday night is sold-out now, too. Is there any chance they would move this elsewhere (DAR?) after a 2-night-stand sold out this quickly?
-
In general, how many tickets do we think have been released? And how many more will be released? And on what sort of schedule? Or are we all pretty clueless together?
I missed my chance to get 7 Monday tickets, because I thought Sunday being sold out was a fluke.
-
No way, their last show at DAR was the worst.
-
This was the general sale. When it sells out it normally means all the tickets are sold.
-

oh, don't lose hope yet. if someone tall stands in front of me at the show, yeah, that's a throwdown.
(i'm feeling fighty lately. sorry if that offends.)

I just called tickets.com and they said they would release more, and this was just a small number of tickets...
-
No more tickets will be released. Both shows are completely sold out.

Why are you lying and giving people false hope?
-
Thanks Shadrach.
Its pretty obvious it is not a small number of tickets judging from the amount of people who posted on here who got them.

I'm not lying....they can't really be sold out......I'll call tickets.com back. Do you know FOR SURE that this is every ticket ever for both shows? it can't be. it just can't.

Well since I'm the ticketing manager for 9:30 I think I can safely say that both shows are sold out and no more tickets will be released. I'm sorry, but demand was very high for these tickets.
-
Does the 930 club regret not charging $50 a ticket?
-
I literally just slept through the entire time the tickets were on sale, only to wake up and find they are sold out for both shows. I will never forgive myself for this.
Also, the first one to mention the irony in "sleeping the clock around" will get a punch in the face.
-

The asking price on eBay is $87.00 a ticket.
-
We have now posted that both shows are sold out on the main page.
-
The new album The Life Pursuit is really good. Have listened to it straight through twice and am even more jazzed about the show. There's a few songs on there that sound like... New Pornographers.
Which I guess means they sound like Rusted Root, according to some on this board.
-
Looking at eBay makes me cry.
-
Holy that was fast. I barely got into work and they are all gone. Oh well, I'll catch 'em at SXSW. :p
-
I was at the dentist and missed the whole thing.
Is the Electric Factory a seated venue or standing only? And does Philly have a no smoking law?
-
I'll be at the Monday show.
-
If I remember correctly, it's standing for the most part, but they do have a balcony with a bar that might have high-top tables. The place is strange, though; they rope off the drinking section from the rest of the club. That means if you're not planning on drinking, you might be stuck with all of the kiddies.

Hmmm, maybe NYC would be a better bet. We had been planning to take a day trip there anyway. At least it's nonsmoking in NYC, that might be something I can say to convince Celeste she needs to go...
My wife asked me last night, "Now are Belle and Sebastian just two people, or are they a whole group?" and also made the comment that their music is so quiet that it might not translate into a good live club show.
Anybody that has seen them have a comment on the latter statement?

Personally, I wound up liking them a lot more once I saw them live. They're definitely a little more rockin' on stage, but not to the point where songs are drastically different. At their last 9:30 show, they definitely stuck to their poppier songs as well, so the show was a great time. They're fairly funny between songs, too, which is a plus. That was one of my favorite shows of that year (2004?). Just don't expect a high "sexy" quotient.

They've been brilliant (even soundwise) at both 9:30 and Black Cat

what's messed up is that the B&S concert is still not even listed on the 9:30 website! I mean, good thing i get the 9:30 emails but what about those poor saps that had no idea it was going to happen?
-
I got one for Monday, but the original plan had been for a bunch of us to go on Sunday. I don't think any of us realized it would sell out so quickly. Sucks they all won't be joining me and my other friend who refused to say die and each got our ticket.
-
The last two albums are much more rocking...so i assume that translates to a fun show.

I found out about the shows through the Belle and Sebastian mailing list, got the links to tickets through their e-mail, etc. I would have been frustrated because I was expecting to see a link on the 9:30 site, but instead you had to go through tickets.com instead of linking from an announcement on the main page. Plus, it pays to look here. I think I was the one who answered the question that general sale was today, 10am. It really wasn't posted anywhere else that it wasn't a presale.
-
yeah..i saw it on B&S's website and then got an email but yeah..it wasn't a presale with a password like usual...should be a good show...for me and the one friend i bought a ticket for! saw them alone last time they played 9:30 and it rocked...in that chill B&S way.

also, you cannot smoke except for the upstairs area, which is the drinking area.
so downstairs = no drinking, no smoking
upstairs = drinking AND smoking.
also, they have TVs and screens for the upstairs ppl to see the show.

Is it just me or does it seem like to anyone else that tickets.com has improved their site? I was fully prepared to spend an hour in their "virtual waiting room" bullshit, but as it turned out, the tickets came up right away and I was done with the whole process in less than two minutes.
-
To clarify Electric Factory a bit, upstairs is 21 and over only and downstairs is all ages. But you can't get a drink upstairs and then go downstairs to watch the show. If you go upstairs to drink, you have to stay up with your drink. They also sell beers in really large cups (at least 20 oz. I believe). The upstairs gets really packed sometimes and it's impossible to move and now they have little lounges with seats up there (not sure if they're for regular peeps or if you have to be special). Good place for the most part, but I think the talking gets worse there than at 9:30 club.
Oh, and if you're into a bit of the sweet leaf or other extracurricular treats, they do a VERY thorough job of checking guys and girls. I know for a fact that my naughty bits were touched before walking into a Trey Anastasio show. I wanted to be held afterwards. They'll tear into cigarette packs as well. Either way, people still do drugs in there, but the search is very hardcore (depending on the artist). Just a PSA if that's anybody's bag.

-
Was anyone else at the Belle and Sebastian show at the Black Cat in 1998 when you could hear a pin drop while they were playing? That was one of those nights where the audience totally helped turn that show into something special. They went nuts in between songs, but while they were playing you didn't hear a THING excpet for the band. It was pretty cool...hopefully the 9:30 shows will be that enjoyable.

How can you include both of those together? Not dancing and enjoying the music shouldn't bother anyone else in a manner that incessant talking does.
-
oh dear - despite talking to several people about the gig last night I got busy and distracted and work and am ticketless :(

Mayfly
Ease Your Feet In The Sea
The Wrong Girl
The Stars Of Track And Field

hard to beat that. only bad thing was that due to the ridiculous line outside, i missed half of guv'ner's set. and i really, really wanted to see guv'ner.
-
It's not the noisy crowds that are the problem, it's the fact that the band is not very good live period. I mean, let's face it, their shows are boring and sloppy... don't get me wrong, it will still be enjoyable because we know and love the songs, they are one of my favorite bands, but just don't get your hopes up, much better in the studio. Looking forward to New Porno though - have always missed them in the past!
Also, who needs to see a band two nights in a row, seriously, it's a free country do what you want, but why not let someone else get a chance, and this is coming from someone who got tix already.

Geez, what are you trying to do, talk me out of the show?
New Pornos suck live without Neko, by the way. Not sure if there any good live with her.
I agree about two nights. But different people have different tastes and desires, so whatever, right?

People got them both nights in a row? I skipped the second half of my fourth period (left around 10:30) so I could get tickets and they were sold out.
Waited for them forever, checked the website every day for tour dates, and then chemistry exam review ruins my Belle and Sebastian life.
I'm going back to the e-bay hunt. Good luck to everyone trying to find tickets.
-
you're right, those were not my sentiments, they were Cales but I thought you weighed in on the issue the last time The Shins were in town, no?
and thanks to a particularly awesome forumite I think I may have located a ticket

Bottom line though is people can do what they want.

Does anyone know who's opening and who's headlining?

i hate all you bastards that had the nerve to buy tickets to both shows, +5 to one show, or buy 10 each to sell on ebay. some people just dont have the opportunity to purchase the tickets as soon as they become available. pull your heads out of your asses and realize that you and your buddies aren't the only ones looking forward to this show. i've done about as much as i am capable of to obtain these, i even skipped class and went to the library today an hour after the tickets had been on sale, but it's gotten to the point where that's not even good enough. if you suggest ebay to me, i suggest some deceny to you.

Dude, you should try ebay! They have plenty! I have 3 auctions myself!
-
Yeah, I was in school. I tried really hard to get a ride home during lunch so I can get tickets but it didn't work. I raced home right after school but wasn't surprised that it was way too late.
I feel bad too--I was in charge of getting tickets for my friends, and now I'll be really lucky if I get one for myself.
I wish they would start selling tickets at like, 5 in the morning--they'd weed out the people who didn't REALLY REALLY want to go and not just the people who can't get out of their daily commitments.
-
y'all should have pulled a bueller and pretended to be sick so you could have stayed home and been near a computer. the real villians are not those who got tickets, but instead your parents and teachers. they are all assholes.
-
i actually did yesterday when i thought they were supposed to go on sale, i even put up the quote on "how to fake out the parents" as my away message.
-
I don't think there are really any villains here, certainly not the teachers and parents. The bottom line is there is more demand than there is supply.

those of us with office jobs were just sitting here all morning hitting refresh... or hitting refresh from 9:58-10:02. Get a job! slackers

Or take advantage of awesome parents who buy your tickets for you. I have three for Sunday, can't wait. All you kids who were in school, don't whine, if you had some more sense you could have found a more logical way to get the tickets, such as asking someone who DOESN'T attend school to buy the tickets for you.

Amen, to that. Although I didn't have to hit refresh once to get my Sunday ticket right at 10.

That was a quiet show...I was surprised by that because the Elliott Smith show that year had lots of talkers (great show, though...quasi opening and backing him). I thought there was another opener for B&S because I was excited about someone other than them and Guv'ner that night. Can't remember who it was, though. Anyone remember? Maybe I'm wrong.

For what on earth reason should I not get tickets for me and my buddies so that you can go this show? That is the dumbest thing....you wouldn't have gotten my "buddies'" tickets anyway because you didn't get out of freakin' class on time. Sheez. Who's the self-centered figure in this tableau...?!
-
Oh yeah, I got tickets for 47 of my closest friends...we can't wait to go. All 47 of us (not an ebay sale to be made for even one of my 47 tickets). Craziest thing is I have a JOB and couldn't get online at 10:00 a.m. because I was in an important MEETING so I found someone who COULD get online at 10:00 a.m. I know, I know, I musta been my school's valedictorian with a brain like mine.

Guv'ner opened up at the Black Cat show, and I still remember very vividly that they sucked. Momus (I think) opened up the CHicago show on that tour and they were HILARIOUS. Really amusing. But don't worry about missing Guv'ner. 8 years have passed and I remember how sucky they were. So that should say something :)

this happens EVERY time a good band(s) hit the 9:30 Club.
why do people still feel the need to bitch about it?
you got beat to the punch. suck it up and swallow it down, and face the facts; if you want to see this show, you'll have to get over the fact that you weren't lucky enough to get tickets and turn to ebay.
what don't people understand about that?
jeez, i thought everybody got the picture after the 05 audioslave fiasco..
-
and besides, it's not like the pogues, where tickets are selling for hundreds of dollars over face value, because nobody has them.
I'm going to go ahead and say that these cost 110 after fees. I see plenty of tickets for 140-160 range. That's THIRTY DOLLARS OVER FACE VALUE.
if you want to see the bands half as much as you're saying, fifteen dollars over face value/ticket won't mean anything to you.
shut the hell up and buy the god damn tickets. bitching on here isn't getting you any closer to getting inside the doors for either show.
and frankly, we've heard show bitching done a lot better before.

chokey- chill. Generally these sales go on at 10 am so more people can get in on the sale. Oh and there was an Audioslave debacle?
-
How many tickets for $110 after fees? Looking at the rest of your math, I'm thinking you're talking about two tickets.
I didn't get tickets, but I bet two tickets were less than $90, even with fees.

i didn't buy tickets, but i'm pretty sure they were 45 a piece BEFORE fees, which means about 55 AT LEAST after fees. that's at elast 110/pair, possibly 120. anybody who bought them wanna chime in?
-
$84.25 for a pair.
-
Tickets ended up being $85 a pair after all the charges...I picked up two for Sunday and two for Monday.
-
ah, so i misjudged. but 150 on ebay is a LOT better than it could have been.
-
i got mine right as they were making the final boarding call for my flight home from slc. god bless wi-fi.

Has anyone else seen the setlists from the European tour? Good gawd, they are digging out some great songs! And no two nights are the same.

How about posting one, pretty please?

Well I'll be the first to say that Neko doesn't do much for me, looks-wise...though I dig her solo music.
But I still wouldn't call her homely. Certainly not a Stuart Murdoch/ A.C Newman level of homely.

From Belle and Sebastian's newsletter today:
Even more urgently, Stuart is the guest on NPR's "Fresh Air",
errm, today. US listeners go to

find out what time it's on in your neck of the woods. I'm
guessing they archive these things online too. NPR shall also be
broadcasting our show at the 9.30 in DC.

Stuart Murdoch of B&S is a handsome man; he did pull Isobel Campbell for quite awhile, and she's a hot potato.
And Carl Newman is no George Clooney but he's no Philip Seymour Hoffman either. I'm sure he does very well for his pleasure.
You just need a nice looking frontman. Oasis was that and they all have nice houses.
-
Belle and Sebastian are on Conan tonight, I think.
-
Indeed they are...I'm disappointed that "The Blues Are Still Blue" is the next single, I think it's the weakest song off of the new record. But I bet they'll play "Funny Little Frog".
-
a bet you would win......

i like that song, it reminds of a De Novo Dahl track
-
is anyone going both nights? i have 2 for sunday and instead of taking a friend, i am wondering whether i should trade one for mondy. it looks like the shows are fairly different..
-
We saw the show in NYC Friday night.
New Pornographers are still really, really, really bad. Painful to watch.
Belle and Sebastian were good at times, boring at others. Not a good song selection. Maybe they played all the good stuff on Thursday.
My wife fell asleep during both bandss.
There are assholes in NYC crowds, just as there are at DC shows. Two drunk teens came up and sat behind us. When the band launched into Judy and the Dream of Horses (one of the highlights), the boy teen yells, "This is why I love these guys. ROCK ON!" He then proceeded to kick wy wife's seat from behind for five minutes, as my wife held herself and myself back from turning around and grabbing him and strangling him.
-
So I guess the set times have changed to 8:30 and 10?
-
I dunno...hopefully not. I'm not taking any chances, though a little earlier would be good. I'm getting old!!

But it helped keep her awake, so it wasn't all bad, right? Light a candle; don't curse the darkness.

Sorry, my FAQ response was incorrect (twice in a week, I must be getting old too). Better take a nap this afternoon.

so so psyched for the show tonight ...
-
anybody have recent setlists?
-
I posted some setlists on page 3.
-
Any thoughts on last night? I have a setlist to post once I get home.
I loved Belle and Sebastian. What an awkward group of people. There were moments last night that were just beautiful. New Pornographers were nothing special, I only wish they had played that damn "Graceland" song.

were you the girl yelling for that when they ended up playing "Testament to Youth in Verse?"
I thought both bands were outstanding last night.
-
So who all is going tonight...
-
The New Porns were a bit of a disappointment, though that's a harsh term. Kathryn Calder was sick and her voice was completely shot. So alot of the harmonies were lost.
-
let it be known that this is not my scene at all. i'm a hardcore/metal nut. but, there's a special place in my heart for the new pornographers, simply because they're so freakin catchy. and i got stuck with an extra pair of tickets, so i made the drive last night.
let it also be known that prior to last night, i had heard very little belle&sebastian; not because I didn't want to, but because everytime I get introduced to one of these overhyped indie bands, all they do is let me down and anger me. so i was there for the porns. they were fantastic. even though katheryn (she looks like a boy! what!) was sick, they were still (almost) dead on. or as dead on as you could be while your backup female singer was sick. really enjoyable set.
i decided to stick around for B&S, because the girl was with was really into them. so i decided to suck it up and stick around. wow. what a group of people. what a group of musicians. I did not hear one song last night that I did not like; and I take back every derogatory thing I ever said about this band. They are amazing. I was simply blown away; and my next few paychecks will be dedicated to purchasing their collection and finding out what i've missed.
something else that really made the show last night was the crowd. when i came for bloc party, the crowd was completely dead (go figure. dc) and nobody was dancing, moving, or even responding for the most part. that really ruined the show for me, and i was expecting the same thing here. and while i got it for the new porns, when b&s came on, that all changed. people were actaully MOVING! some were king of dancing! they were clapping! they were yelling out songs! they were laughing! I never expected so much interaction from the indie capital of the world. i was shocked.
and one more thing. i've been to a lot of shows in my day; and never before have i seen 2 bands that had such entertaining things to say inbetween songs. there was no "yeah DC! FUCK THIS!" bullshit. they were humerous, and real. and that is something i appreciate.
if i could find tickets, i'd make the drive from Richmond to see the show again tonight. most fun i've had in a long time.

Fox in the Snow
Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying
I really, really enjoyed the show, though Get Me Away was a weak closer I thought. Sleep the Clock Around will hopefully close the show tonight (I'm keeping my fingers crossed). That's probably my favorite song of theirs, though I have so many. Had a great time...Bags, it was awesome to see you again. I'm looking forward to tonight's show. Stuart putting on the tiny v-neck shirt was pretty classic. All in all, a fantastic time. New Pornos were good, though I didn't know what to expect from their live show. I did hear a lot of songs of theirs that I enjoy, so that was cool.
-
The New Pornographers were a disappointment last night. I've seen way better performances from them, particularly last fall's tour (with Neko and that dude from Destroyer-who also opened the show). Still, it's nice to see them on a bill with B&S. B&S were simply amazing! I'm lucky to see them in such a small venue (they are playing at a shitty 10,000 seat venue in San Francisco-the reason I decided to fly to DC). The crowd was also great.
Your comment about Bloc Party - it's hard to get excited once you see them live. They are far way better on record, than live, imho.
-
hmmm i prefer Bloc Party live and remixed... the record is good, but it sounds like they are trying to hard, i like Kele's voice when it's muted in some of the remixed version.
While some early B&S fans are miffed at the new more polished pop direction the band is taking, I applaud it and think it will bring in more fans... The early Nick Drake-lite records while good to listen just faded into the background. My favorite early B&S track is still "Legal Man" which is now an indicator of what the band has become.
-
last nite was the first time i saw b&s and they were superb. the new pornographers, whose catalog i have, sucked. they are one boring live band.
-
Funny, Belle and Sebastian and especially the New Pornos really had nothing very witty in their between song banter in NYC. Maybe they saved it all for DC.
But I guess it's all relative. If all you typically go to are harcore and metal shows, the B&S banter is probably going to sound downright insirational in comparison.
For great hysterically funny between song banter, try a Robbie Fulks show.
-
B&S's banter always seems kind of funny to me, they are just so unbelievably uncool that it actually makes them cool. They seem like ordinary people, until you see how talented they are, then they become extraordinary. The first time I saw them (in 1998) you could tell they still didn't know how to keep the flow of the performance going. I think they really enjoy performing live now, and it shows. I had a very fun time. I kind of wish I had seen the Philly show now.

warms my heart.
i'm going tonight. and judging by the omissions from last night ("act of apostle I-II", "blues are still blue", "dog on wheels", "le pastie.."..."song for sunshine"?)... i'm very psyched. "i don't love anyone" would've been nice though.

Yeah that was me. It came so close to happening like three times. "Testament. . " wasn't a bad replacement though.

Both bands were very "on" last night, so there was lots of chatter. I wouldn't say "witty", but they were chatty and it was natural, funny and cute.
Great show -- I was fine with New Pornographers. Even with the lack of harmonies, I think their songs are catchy and fun, and it works live for me. And they did "Slow Descent," which was just what I needed.
B&S were great -- I'm not too familiar with their catalogue, but had seen them before (at Constitution Hall). It was a lot of fun, they were very in to it, they do a really good job, and it was a good, long show.
Also good to see bearman and his crew, along with my posse who, god bless 'em, always dance! (Well, usually...)

If You're Feeling Sinister is considered their masterpiece. I also recommend Push Barman to Open Old Wounds, the new compilation of EPs and B-Sides.

"if you're feeling sinister" is the essential LP .... most of their best work, however, is on EPs, which are all collected on the double-CD "pushing barman to open old wounds" ... i would definitely start with those two
-

Late. I left at 11:30, at the encore. So there were two more songs after that.... B&S played about an hour forty five.
-
As a newer B&S fan I was of two minds regarding the show. I really dig The Life Pursuit, I think it's a great album and will get repeated play. Thus, it was good hearing Suki, Funny Little Frog, etc.
On the strength of The Life Pursuit I bought Dear Catasrophe Waitress. It doesn't do it for like like the Life Pursuit did.
The sound and banter during the show were excellent and I was glad to hear the back catologue, but there were few tunes that really caught my ear.
The fans seemed generally happy and glad to be there and that energy poured over to me somewhat.
On the negative side, I was standing in the worst possible area of the club, it was late and I had to work the next morning. This all weighed in at various points and put a damper on the experience.
Also, the fact that I didn't hear anything that really motivated me to run out and get Tigermilk or Sinster makes me question my the excitement that The Life Pursuit generated.
Who knows, most likely I'll get the albums, love them, and then wish I had been more familiar with the set list when I saw them last night.
NPs are fine. Great melodies/harmonies and they seemed cool with the banter. I probably would have enjoyed their show back in October when they were the main event. But nothing would have kept me from seeing Rollins that night.
-
a disclaimer, these are two of my favorite active bands, and it was the first time i'd seen either live
i enjoyed the new pornos set, but i just love hearing the songs ("the body says no" was a highlight for me) ... i could tell they weren't at the top of their game, but i liked the all-request feel to the set (i was yelling for "on the table") and it definitely warmed me up for B&S
i'm not sure how many of you were stage right, maybe 10 feet out from the food window, but there was this group of 5 or 6 girls there who might have been the most annoying people i've ever seen at a show ... one of them started complaining during the first song that "everyone here thinks they're too cool to dance," (this is during "stars of track and field," mind you) ... they then proceeded to throw elbows, dance wildly to every song (no matter how slow), and chat up any single guy in a 10-foot radius ... one of them literally talked throughout the entire show, she was physically incapable of keeping her mouth shut for more than 1-2 minutes ... needless to say, we got the fuck out of there and moved back to the bar about 20-30 mins into the show
moral of the story? dancing is not always cool.
anyway, i really liked the B&S set ... not having seen them before, i was expecting them to be much more introverted and awkward, i was really surprised to see how much of a rock star stuart is ... he was bouncing all over the stage, making witty banter, even doing some morrissey-esque hand movements at some points ... his voice sounded really strong, just much more confident then i expected him to be
"electronic renassaince" off of "tigermilk" was definitely a highlight (wasn't expecting to hear that one) ... "jonathan david", "string bean jean", and "a century of fakers" were really nice ... although i love "get me away from here," it was definitely a weak closer, i would have taken "boy with the arab strap" in a heartbeat as a rolicking closer
the problem with seeing them (similar to wilco, or a bunch of other vets from the 90s) is that they just have too deep a catalogue to hear all of my favorites ... i guess i missed the boat, but i have some live shows from the late 90s, and the setlists are just perfect on those ... oh well, i really did enjoy their set, and seeing them definitely takes some of the mystery out of the band, they seemed pretty normal to me

Chokeychicken, if you have an iTunes gift card, pick up the exclusive live version of "If You're Feeling Sinister". I much prefer the live version of the album to the studio one. You won't regret it!
Personally, I am a huge fan of the "Jonathan David" and "I'm Waking Up To Us" EPs. Very good stuff. All of their LPs have something to offer, though "The Life Pursuit" is one of the strongest ones in my opinion. And I know that a lot of people are luke warm on it, but I still think "Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant" is a really solid record, even if there are a couple songs on it which are just OK.

i'm starting to rethink going to this spot every time i come to the club for a sold-out show ... sure, there's great sight-lines and usually some space even when the place is packed, but for some reason it seems like a magnet for at least one pack of loud drunk girls ... any other suggestions for a good spot for a sold-out show?

so apparently they're now offering more tickets at face value?
which really sucks considering I paid $80 for mine on ebay. AO(SJDF I am having the worst luck with this show. but it should be really great nonetheless.
-
Ahh, so I'm a bit late, but I went to the show last night. I'd never seen them before and thought they were absolutely fabulous. I really wanted to hear Step Into My Office Baby, but I suppose that was made up for with Century of Fakers, which I also enjoy. (Really wanted to hear Seeing Other People & Le Pastie...) The New Pornographers...let's just say they were amusing. They wouldn't play the song I kept shouting, and I assume they heard me (I was in the very front row, we got there around 5:30), but I suppose it's because Neko Case would have had to be there. The drummer was the best part. He was just plain awesome.
We had to leave early - because the metro stops running at 12, I guess. That kind of sucked. So we missed the encore and several of the ending songs.
But what made up for it was, on the way out, I heard this guy shouting at me if I wanted to eat chili dogs with him across the street. Then I realized it was the New Pornographers and their drummer, still drunk on the wine. :) It was so cute. I really wanted to go, but I had to go home. They kept pleading for us to come. It was great.
-
By any chance, were you among the group of dancing girls stage right?

I really enjoyed B&S last night, though I don't know if they were any better than when I first saw them at Constitution Hall (Maybe it was the first time excitement thing. I really enjoyed all of the Tigermilk era selections and was thoroughly impressed with all of the new material.
I too would recommend If your feeling sinister
As for the New Pornographers, I'm only mildly familiar with them, and while they weren't terrible last night (I enjoyed the songs), their performance didn't make me want to go out and buy some of their collection.
Hope Stuart gets a medium tonight
-
I'm really excited about tonight. Although, I'm worried that they will play past midnight again, because that will mean that I'll be leaving early to catch the metro

??? That would be VERY unusual for 9:30. AT most, I'd think just a few if the bands were saving tickets. Again, even that would be VERY unusual.
Unless you're talking about random people offering tickets for face value. That always happens -- last minute, friends bail and folks not out to make a buck have tickets available they just want to get rid of. A friend of mine had FIVE tickets available for last night's show at 4:30 that day.

I was stage left too, and there was a large contingent of chatty girls of the scream "I love you" and grab at Stuart when he walked by variety.
Irritating people are at every show, especially down near the front. I've learned to tune them out.

Neko Case
"Fox Confessor Brings the Flood"
(Anti-)
CD Reviews: The New York Times
It would have been easy for Neko Case to stay retro. Ms. Case, who was born in Virginia and has lived in Seattle, Chicago and Vancouver, British Columbia, has a torchy voice that's part Patsy Cline, part Loretta Lynn, and it sounds right at home in country weepers or folk-rock anthems. Onstage, Ms. Case still sings her share of love songs. But she isn't content with straightforward stories or simple declarations any more.
On her most recent albums, and as a member of the mostly Canadian songwriters' collective the New Pornographers, she has moved toward more imagistic, even cryptic songs. Apparently the New Pornographers satisfied Ms. Case's frisky side, because her new album, "Fox Confessor Brings the Flood," turns inward with ballads and waltzes.
Ms. Case produced the album, recording in Arizona with members of country-stretching bands like Giant Sand and Calexico. The music is rootsy but not traceable to any particular era. The guitars might use an old-fashioned twangy reverb, but they're likely to get an undertow of cello or an unexpected twist to the chord progression. And while Ms. Case sings like a honky-tonk sweetheart, she's lavishing her emotion on lines like "It's not for you to know, but for you to weep and wonder/ when the death of your civilization precedes you."
Memories interweave with fantasies, observations with fragments of narrative. For every clear-cut song about troubled love, like "Hold On, Hold On" or "That Teenage Feeling," there are two with far more elusive imagery. At first, the songs can seem remote and arty, but gradually they start to add up; they're filled with a sense of loss and a hope for transformation. It's still an album more for the head than the heartstrings, but Ms. Case isn't keeping her distance. Just the opposite; she's unveiling what haunts her. JON PARELES

I was stage left too, and there was a large contingent of chatty girls of the scream "I love you" and grab at Stuart when he walked by variety.
You don't hate me now, do you? I didn't talk at all. But I was with several people who were younger than me and very loud, who kept leaving to smoke and shoving themselves back in. It was annoying.
Hope we didn't spoil your fun.

I'm trying to listen to the npr webcast tonight but I have a mac and I don't have a real media or windows player... any help?
-
download either of those programs

I just figured out Stuffit was needed.
Thanks!

I don't hate you, haha. I'm sure you were one of the well behaved ones. I had a terrific time, nothing could have ruined that show for me. I'm a teenager myself, so it just especially irritates me when other people contribute to that unfortunate stereotype of my demographic.

excellent show, B&S were fantastic, New Pornos were good, although hampered by a lack of female vocals

Electronic Renaissance
The Loneliness of a Middle Distance Runner

Your Cover's Blown
Dog on Wheels
I'm a Cuckoo
The Wrong Girl

A pretty fantastic show...Seymour Stein was the alternate to She's Losing It. I've never seen them play that, it would have been interesting.

They also played "To Be Myself Completely" after "Loneliness..." Kind of an add in.

Wow. Carl Newman's finger busted open and bled, so the guy in front of us fainted and collapsed. Then my girlfriend decides to re-do her sister's hair during B&S's first song, so Stuart calls them on it, telling some story about how it's kinda like knitting during disco shows(?). Interesting night for us :)
New Pornographers did as well as they could without Neko's or Kathryn's voice. I actually thought they were going to have Kurt attempt Neko's lead in "The Rules Have Changed"...the audience coulda pushed harder on that one. And having someone with a semblance of a voice (Kurt) sing a Dan Bejar song ("Jackie") made the song so different. Almost adorable. Huh.
If Belle & Sebastian weren't having fun, they certainly fooled me. Can't complain about the song selection, and energy seemed way up. There was a nice rapport with the audience, and banter amongst the band members was both playful and sincere. "Forgive me, America, for I have sinned."
Great show, and so happy NPR recorded this one.
-
Great show, the B&S have certainly come into thier own as peformers... The sound level and mix was perfect. They maybe become a band worth seeing multiple times on the same tour... heck i'd dj for free to get the chance to follow them around.
definitely need to figure out a DC artist's song they can cover the next time through... hearing them do "Waiting Room" would be something unique. but Eva Cassidy, "Da Butt" or streching it to the Slickee Boys or Foo Fighters could work.
-
Last night was my first time seeing the the NPs and while I appreciate the catchiness of the songs am still ambivalent towards as I'll give the records the odd listen but little more. Seeing as Kathryn's voice was shot and none of the girl singer songs could be performed , it got a bit tedious as the set went on when they couldn't decided what to play next. Carl's comment about not liking boy singer bands and specifically mentioning Fall Out Boy, Hawthone Hieghts and All-American Rejects was funny. And they played "Graceland" and acknowledged it being a request for the previous night. It's probably just a personal pet peeve, but get a freakin' guitar tech to tune your guitars and stop doing it between songs on stage.
-
I was looking forward to DJing one of these two shows, but B&S nixed the DJs for thier own tunes. However, since I've been planning my setlist for awhile, a couple of us DJs will get together and post our own shadow playlists in a day or two. Then you all can grade us :D
-
I think Kosmo summed it up pretty well. I have all three of the New Pornographers CD's, and as good as they are don't quite measure up live. Wish I had seen them with Neko. Overall, pretty entertaining though, especially when one of the guys tried to put a band-aid on Newmans finger.
Belle and Sebastian were great! The sound was fantastic and good setlist too. I hope they do come back here in the summer.
-
Now all B&S needs to do is setup a Fan Club so I can easily get tickets for multiple shows :D
-
I went to the show on Sunday, and now wish I could have gotten tickets for both nights.
I actually really liked the New Pornographers. They were very charming, laughing and joking with the crowd. Maybe I was lucky that I got *some* female vocals, but I was very happy with them.
B&S...wow! I'm a little sad to see that "The Blues Are Still Blue" and "Judy" got played last night and not on Sunday...
-
I guess I'm the only one who who wasn't impressed by either of the bands live, though as I said B&S were good at times. Both have lisping gingers as frontmen, did anybody notice that?
-
B&S was some of the best musicianship I've seen in a very long time. It's refreshing to wake up the next morning and not have your ears ringing because everyone was turned up way too loud.
-
This was my second time seeing the New Pornographers and my first time seeing B&S. I think I liked the New Pornographers much more this time, if only because Dan Bejar wasn't there. Man, I hated that guy at their last show at the 9:30 Club. I didn't mind the lack of female vocals so much really. I thought they got some decent harmonies with just the guys. I think Kathryn forgot she wasn't supposed to sing. I saw her singing on the final song of the set. Very good set list too.
B&S didn't disappoint, but I'm not sure I'd say they blew me away exactly. Still, I had a great time and I was really psyched to hear "Judy" especially. They put on an excellent show. The sound mix was impeccable last night.
-
If you're really into musicianship, check out the country music festival at the Kennedy Center later in the month. Del McCoury, Earl Scruggs, Marty Stuart, Kenny Vaughan, Vince Gill...the list goes on and on...

Every single person I've ever taken to see B&S or that I know has seen them has walked away totally happy. I've seen them when they're OK, but for the most part they are always great. They praised the 9:30 Club last night, saying it's one of their favorite places to play. Seth, any chance you can bring them back this summer? Stuart hinted they may return. Great, great stuff.
By any chance, does anyone have a recording of any of these shows? I'm dying to get a live version of "Electronic Renaissance" and "Your Cover's Blown".

Great show, I'm happy...it was worth the $$$$$$$$$$
The New Pornographers were alright, I wish they had had a female vocalist but I guess there's nothing anyone can do about that. I'd like to see them sometime again when they did.
I really enjoyed Belle & Sebastian. They played a lot of good stuff and were obviously having a good time. I danced a bunch, and left in a really great mood.

If you have Linux or Mac OS X (or maybe Windows?), you can use MPlayer to capture the streams, play them, and convert them to PCM (so that you can convert it to MP3 by another program, such as iTunes or LAME).
Here's the command I'm using to do just that as I write this:
mplayer -dumpstream 'http://wm.npr.na-central.speedera.net/wm.npr.na-central/asc/live/20060306_asc_bellesebastian.wma?MSWMExt=.asf'

Would you mind converting the B&S and NP streams to MP3 and sharing them? Or, if you email them to me (will ***AT*** eggdropper ***DOT*** com), I can host them.

Why don't we wait until Wednesday? If Graace is right, maybe NPR will post them in MP3 then. NPR has posted at least one of their shows in MP3 format in the past. (Bloc Party, I believe.)
-
I'm listening to the B&S steam right now, and the quality doesn't quite seem up to NPR's usual standards. The vocals don't sound like a soundboard recording and the quality is very compressed. Oh, well. Better than nothing.

For Belle and Sebastian, a New Sound at the 9:30 Club (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/03/06/AR2006030601379.html)
Tuesday, March 7, 2006; C09
The New York post-punk label Matador has released a lot of caustic stuff over the years, but currently its top attractions are a pair of dulcet pop-rock bands: Glasgow, Scotland's Belle and Sebastian, and Vancouver, B.C.'s New Pornographers. The bands, touring together, played the first of two sold-out nights on Sunday at the 9:30 club, where they proved entirely compatible but surprisingly unequal.
Overcoming a reputation for being awkward and introverted, Belle and Sebastian justified headliner status with a performance that was as relaxed as it was well-arranged. The band's 90-minute main set was framed by two ballads from its whispery early days, "The Stars of Track and Field" and "The State I Am In," in which singer-guitarist Stuart Murdoch sounded characteristically fragile, and the other players barely intruded. Yet the bulk of the octet's show was drawn from its new album, "The Life Pursuit," which successfully blends the band's original sound with bits of T. Rex, David Bowie and even Kool & the Gang.
Cello, violin, trumpet and vibes embroidered the sound, but guitars and keyboards drove nearly funky new material including "White Collar Boy" (which actually sounded as much like the Undertones as it did T. Rex) and "The Blues Are Still Blue." Murdoch made an unexpected transformation into showman, proving he can now dance nearly as well as he can brood.
Midway through the New Pornographers' hour-long set, singer-keyboardist Kathryn Calder spoke briefly to demonstrate just how hoarse she was. She sounded fine harmonizing with guitarist and principal songwriter A.C. Newman, but perhaps her strained voice unsteadied the rest of the sextet.
While the audience favorites "From Blown Speakers" and "Sing Me Spanish Techno" were adequate simulations of their glossy studio versions, their roughness did not boost the songs' appeal. When the essence of a band's message is in lines like "ooh la-la la-la," the articulation has to be just right.

Haha, some chick is pretending to be me in the recording. Oh god. Jumping on the Graceland bandwagon.
Without any female vocal at all, the NP kind of lose their edge.

We were right there with you, propping up the bar. I liked the girl in Ben Stillers oscar outfit. Halfway through a song she stopped her conversation, jumped up and down excitedly and screamed "I love this song". Shame you missed half of it you vaccuous tart.
On the whole I didn't find them that annoying although the 7 foot blond always seemed to manage to stand in front of me.

Belle and Sebastian put on one of the best shows I've ever seen. It absolutely blew me away. The setlist was almost perfect, although I would have liked to hear at least something from Arab Strap, and more from Catastrophe Waitress. Luckily I found a ride from the club, so I didn't need to leave early and metro. I really hope they keep their word on that summer show.
I thought the New Pornos were very good as well, even without Kat's vocals. They kept me very entertained.

DCist's review of the New Pornographers from last night.

I pfff at that review. NP put on a good show. The other band members carried the weight of the missing female vocals quite well.

Anyone get their mitts on the Middle Distance Runner (http://www.middledistancerunner.com/) EP the band was handing out after the B&S show? I'm really enamored with them at the moment and can't wait to hear their full CD and see them live. The bands lead singer used to be in a Pittsburgh band called Black Tie Review. Based on the EP they get 7.9 on the kosm-o-meter.

Would have been better than Fugazi, but I can't think of that song and its "surprisingly inappropriate lyrics" without thinking of Arrested Development!

Few things of note..
TIL: The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is a 1962 British coming-of-age film.
there is a 2006 NPR 9:30 recording
https://www.npr.org/2006/03/06/5235927/belle-and-sebastian-the-new-pornographers
Although what is odd, the webpage says Part 2, and it starts after LoaMDR and I can't find part one
would be interested in hearing that
I feel like by 2001 I'd stopped listening to new B&S
at the time that Jonathan David (single..not ep?) had no appeal to me
Legal man was kind of it for me
They have had tons of great songs since then for sure, but I felt like my head was filled with so many good B&S songs it just seemed like diminishing returns at that point
