Title: Superbowl
Post by: Relaxer on January 31, 2008, 04:38:00 pm
Who do you think takes it?

Personal preferences aside, I think NY keeps it close but NE finds a way to win in the 4th quarter, similar to their regular season game.

Actually, I kind of want to see NE win it, just to see a team at the top of its game. I enjoyed watching the Bulls grab a 72-10 reg season record in 95/96, and then win the championship.

Strahan cements his place as the new LT by breaking pretty-boy Brady's leg in the first half.  Jacobs runs for 150.  Toomer catches a TD to put the Giants ahead in the final 3 minutes.  Matt Cassel fails on the final drive.  Giants win 27-24.

 You heard it here first.

Either New England by 3 like their other 3 SB wins or New England routs them by 17+ to cement "best ever" status. No in-between.

What happened the last time the Giants got this far?  Well, look for the same thing to happen this time.

I think anything other than a Patriots blow-out would be exciting to watch. I would be cool to witness history being made, but not if they run away with it.

Any scenario that has The Giants winning would be amazing since they are such an incredible underdog. Personally I would love to see New England down by a point or two late in the game and driving for the game tying score. They stumble a little and have to settle for a field goal attempt only to watch the kicker miss it. It's a possibility without the great Adam Vinatieri doing the kicking.

It'll be very interesting to see which Eli Manning shows up.  Eli in the zone could make it interesting.  Bad Eli should guarentee blowout/embarrassment.

Tom Petty To Play Some New Stuff He's Been Working On At Super Bowl
 January 24, 2008 | | Onion Sports

PHOENIXâ??Veteran rocker Tom Petty, known for such classic hits as "Mary Jane's Last Dance," "The Waiting," and "Refugee," announced Monday that he will be using the Super Bowl XLII Halftime Show as a forum to "test out" some new songs that he's been working really hard on lately. "There's this one cool one that I'm pretty excited about that's called, like, 'Down And Out,' because it has this really down-and-out-like 'feel' to itâ??it doesn't have a chorus yet, but I think we're gonna open with that," Petty said, describing the song as "like 'Free Fallin',' but weirder." "After that, we'll probably do two different versions of 'Rock Rock Rock (Yeah!)' and see which one the crowd likes better. Then I have this guitar riff which technically doesn't have a song to go with it but it sounds awesome, and then [keyboardist] Benmont [Tench] wrote a song about the Super Bowl that I said I'd let him play." Petty has told the 65,000 fans in attendance and the estimated 95 million TV viewers that any feedback, positive or negative, would be appreciated.

odd-makers are favoring the Pats by 12 points, and the over/under is at 54 - how would you bet?

i'd definitely take the giants +12, that way i'm guaranteed a happy result at the end of the night: either the pats run away with the game, or i make some money   :)   i don't think it'll be a blow-out, 12 points is down-right disrespectful of the giants.  and i suppose i'd take the under, but not feeling quite as certain about it.

Everytime I watch the Patriots I just think of one thing:  How much ass is Tom Brady getting?  Or rather, how much  could he be getting if he was  single and not dating some Victoria's Secret model.

Females out there, who would you rather be intimate with for a one-time thing, Tom Brady, Shaun White or Justin Timberlake?

I think those are the top three.  Many of you are probably going "Shuan White"?!?!?!?! but a LOT of girls think the red-headed thing is hot.

So, pick 2 guys who are almost universally accepted as "sex symbols" and on the top of any woman's list.  Then come up with a random third that *you think* women would find attractive.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

ggw had the score predicted perfectly, only he was 10 points off for both teams.  And seeing as how the Pats had been such a high scoring team the whole season, I don't think anyone would guess that it would take until the 4th quarter for things to heat up.  Bully ggw, good show.

As the world champion Giants have won a record 11 road games in a row, they are understandably reluctant to plan a victory parade in the NY metropolitan area. Top cities in contention for the Giants victory parade are Louisville, Columbus, Sacramento, and Miami, with Miami having an inside track due to the efforts of local businessman Don Shula.

Can we please put aside the "Randy Moss is most talented receiver to ever play the game" talk?  "Most talented receivers" usually come up big in big games.  Moss never has.  And, as expected, after the game, he questioned the Patriot's game plan and adopted a "maybe I'll be here next year, maybe I won't" attitude.

Heck, even Art Monk came up big in Super Bowls.

As far as the ads go, I liked the Coke one with Stewie v. Underdog and the  very brief, clever allusion to Lucy and the football.  The Bridgstone one with Alice Cooper/Richard Simmons and the NFL Network's five months ago ones were good too.

For unintentional comedy, the racist (?) Salesgenie ones were hilarious.  I was almost expecting a Little Black Sambo version in the fourth quarter.

growing a pair: ok, maybe i was being harsh here but i found his comments wimpy and effeminate.  he was clearly anti-meathead, and i like my commercials with an air of meatheadedness so we were bound to disagree.  his refrain of "where are the women?" didn't resonate with me.

growing a sense of humor: i watched the game in a room with 40-50 people in it.  everything that he pointed out as being un-funny, strangely enough, were the ones that got the biggest laughs (like the clydesdale/rocky montage).  and he lost me as soon as he didn't get the roxbury reference.

he was coming from a industry-insider "did the commercial" work point of view (most in evidence in his iron man commentary: "So yeah, I'd say it did the job", and his Claratin assessment).  i tend to take a less academic aproach to enjoying ads, and not worry about rating their effectiveness as marketing tools.  probably the true origin of my disagreement with his assessments.

Why does the qb almost always get the mvp?....the mvp last night was the one who caught the ball between his hand and his helmet that gave the giants the first down to keep the winning drive going...everyone knows I'm no fan of the game, and only watched Tom Petty at half time, then the last two minutes (which took 40+ minutes to complete btw) while I was waiting for House to start...but my god, credit were credit is due, that was some skill to keep hold of that ball Manning the qp had thrown it three feet above his head.

Manning was awesome. A lot of his throws were perfectly delivered and a qb that leads a game winning TD drive with 2 1/2 minutes left of the Super Bowl is almost by definition the MVP.

Tyree's catch was unreal - and also set up by Manning making a great play to avoid the sack and find him.

Tuck, Osi, and Strahan all could have won or shared MVP as well.  Or Shockey who looked like he was putting in solid drinking exhibition in the suite.

 (1) Classy of Belichick to run right past the official (well, he pushed him out of the way actually) telling him that there's one play left, over to Coughlin, and then off the field before the last play.  He's been a terrible  winner all season, but last night he was an even worse loser.

 (2) If I was the Giants, I would have thrown the last ball into the end zone instead of taking a knee.  Then if I was asked about it, I would have quoted some of the famous Belichick quotes from the regular season...oh wait, no I wouldn't because eventually karma catches up to you, like I don't know, last night!

 (3) 6:49 left in the third quarter, 4th and 13.  Stephen Gostkowski from 49 yeards?  He's 1-1 from 50+ and 3-5 this season from 40-49.  I'm not sure what the odds are for the Pats going for it on 4th and 13, but I'm guessing it's nowhere near 60%.  The final margin of loss: 3 points.  I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

I agree, Tuck should have got the MVP.

I also agree with vansmack, they should have thrown into the end zone to rub it in like the Patriots have done all season.

And yes, Bilicheat showed his true colors again by running off the field with two seconds left.  Moss heard about it for years when he did it awhile back, I'm sure Bilichump will also.

Congrats to the Giants and congrats to the Pats who still had an amazing year.

Yeah.  I can't believe this wasn't a huge question afterwards.  Maybe he was that cocky to think that they wouldn't be stopped.  But that touchdown to Burress would have tied things then and sent it into overtime.  Enormous, stupid coaching decision.

Plus, they once gave the Super Bowl MVP to someone on the losing team.  They could have given it to Wes Welker.

It was particularly interesting b/c the Pats had just punted on 4th and 2 on about the Giants 40. Probably the first time all year they punted in that situation.  Then they go for it on 4th and 13? Bizarre.  I don't question Belichick for not going w/ Gostkowski though - he's missed makeable kicks consistently all year and really couldn't be trusted.

Karma did its part in this game for sure.
