Title: question for IT peoples
Post by: sonickteam2 on October 21, 2005, 11:42:00 am
If one were to check on their computer to see what internet sites were being looked at.
but they cleared their history...how would you still be able find out....

it cant just be gone after a history clear right?

(and no i am not spying on anyone!)

If you're trying to get rid of your history spend 20 bucks on Window Washer at www.webroot.com (http://www.webroot.com)

To look at stuff that's been cleared you have to know what directory folder to go to in the sys32 (assuming it's windows) nethersphere I do believe.  It's all listed in there someplace.

For more half-baked advice all are invited to Iota on Saturday where I will espouse with great authority and questionable intelligence on any subject of your choosing.

Look at the cookies to see what has been logged.
Check the cache, lots of left over files and bits thereas well.

If it is at work, your IT people probably installed some simple program that creates a log file to show what sites you browsed.

Most current corp-level user-monitoring software tracks not only websites/e-mail addresses accessed by employees, but actual keystrokes (text messages and emoticons)  and images too.   Have a nice day.  :p

I'm sure if any of our companies monitored, we were all fired along time ago.

I once briefly dated someone whose job it was to bring the people at a company who had been caught looking at inappropriate websites into her office and tell them that they had been caught and that were were going to be canned. I think part of her job also involved coaxing a confession out of people.

 What a shitty job.

In an office, there's usually another history log on the network server of everything going through the firewall, so they don't have to look at the one on your machine. In my office they don't care until network performance is getting killed.  Best to download those podcasts after work hours and stay off porn completely.  Use IE for work if required and use Firefox for everything else, mainly to avoid hijacking programs like Adware that thrive in IE.  One guy in my office has Adware on his PC but is too embarassed to tell anyone.. one day I was standing in his cube and a spicy webpage just came up on his screen!  Imagine if it was his boss

Assuming you've deleted your cookies, temporary internet folders and history...check your temp files, history on your pop-up blocker / search function.
Explore your profile folder further, sometimes temp files linger (temp/history/cache/temp. int. folder/music).
Search for .tmp/.html/.mp3, er whatever you were looking at...
Send me a PM - for a few US cents, I can help track it down.   ;)
