Okay, I'm hitting the Lounge tomorrow night to see The Tyde after Fort Reno. Does anyone have an idea (or educated guess) as to when they might go on? I don't know if it's pretty standard at the Lounge for the headliner on a weeknight to go on at 11:00, say, or it varies a lot night to night, etc.
Man I just hope they go on *reasonably* early. (Mondays are usually not good nights for me, plus I'm prepping for a big european jaunt on Wed.!)
Thanks for any help.....

where are you going in europe?

Amsterdam and Berlin for about a week and a half. I'm quite excited -- I've been to Italy a bunch of times, but haven't been to such a fine beer-drinking region yet!
I was hoping to check into cool music summer festivals, but it just got too difficult to roll into the planning. My sister's going with me, and she has a tighter schedule than I do.
Alas, the crappy part of such a cool trip is getting work done before you go. Yuck -- I'm going in at 7:00 tomorrow. *Not* my best time of day!
Welcoming sightseeing and beer tips!
-
Oh, the Hardcore Tour. Bags, I never thought that you were the type.
It's always the ones that you least suspect.
-
Bags, be sure to check out a bar called Tacheles in Berlin. I believe it's in the Kreuzberg district. Very arty, very cool. Stay away from the fire breathing dragon! Also, the Turkish market in Kreuzberg is a fun place. There's another cool bar called the Roter Salon. Unfortunately, I don't remember where that is.
There's a great pizza place in the Charlottenburg area off of the Ku'Damm called the 12 Apostles. The Judas pizza has all the toppings. And, of course, the Pergammon is the top museum in Berlin. The "east side gallery" is one of the longest stretches of the Berlin Wall left.
Berlin is such a cool city. Have a great time. Where in Berlin are you staying?
Viel gluck und bis spater!

Might I also recommend the Tiergarten (a great park near the Brandenburg Gate), and the Berlin Zoo (located right next to "Zoo Station" which U2 named their song after).
And don't forget the Fernsehturm -- a huge East Berlin TV tower, Gedachtnachtskirche -- a bombed out church that stands as a memorial to the horrors of WW2, etc. etc.
Oh, and as for beer, an Augustiner is always tasty, or you could go for the Berliner Weiss -- they add syrup to beer. And no, that's not a shandy.
-
What about that deaf transsexual club you were telling me that you spent a good 6 hours in, Thirsy?
-
That's located in gay Paree, Rhett. Let me tell you though, they certainly didn't run out of Vaseline. Ooh la la.
-
Back to topic, the official line is that doors at velvet are at 8, first act at 9. That said I have been outside the velvet lounge at 9.30 before and they havent been open. I cant remember their cerfew time, but the velvet lounge always seems to run up to it.
-
(1) Thanks for the Germany tips!! I'm noting them all and will see what I can fit in. [FYI, we're staying at the Bleibtreu Hotel in Kurfürstendammâ??. I have not a clue where this is, my sister made the arrangements.] But, we'll be in Berlin for a good 5 days, so we should be able to see a lot.
(2) Think I'll call Velvet Lounge, though I don't see them be super helpful about the times. But thanks for the info, markie -- I wondered if we'd fully lose the initial question of the thread!

how many bands are opening for the tyde tonight. just one? two?

The Deathray Davies just updated their tour dates on their site ( www.deathraydavies.com (http://www.deathraydavies.com) ) and it doesn't show. Although they do have a show scheduled for 8/24 @ velvet lounge.
-
why are we all talking about this still? Rhett has already told us the tyde are rubbish.

Goddamn it. I called Velvet Lounge and there were two opening acts, so the Tyde was scheduled for midnight. On a Monday. Sorry dudes, I have a job that takes some concentration! Just can't do it. Thank goodness someone posted earlier today that The Tyde will be back in late September at Black Cat (opening for Nada Surf, which could be interesting). I will see them then, though it's a bummer to miss a Velvet show -- seeing them with like 70 people.
sheesh. This is the drawback to mid-30s compared to mid-20s, a certain level of responsibility.
If anyone saw them, would love to hear some reviews, good or bad (I can either look forward to the show in Sept if they were great, or feel alright about missing them if they sucked).
-
tyde sucked. limp-wristed wuss rock. as for the black cat show w/ nada surf, yah right. fletcher's would be a great (for the bands) place for a one-hit wonder and a never-has been/will-be.
but you missed out on sounds of kalaediscope. nice pop tunes.
-
I enjoyed both bands, although I couldn't understand a word Sounds of Kaleidescope were singing. The Tyde were great.
-
sounds of kaleidoscope were reasonable, I got the impression that they hadnt done too many shows before. They seemed pretty nervous to me.
The Tyde were great. They played most of my favourite songs of theirs. I did think it was odd that the sound at the start was great and it slowly deteriated over the length of their show.
Oh and Ikarus the tyde are psychadelic pop, with bitter songs about user friends and drug taking. But what were you expecting from a band called the tyde?
perhaps you should stick to seeing bands with "death" in their name from now on?
-
Great -- Pollard, Markie and I tend to be on similar wavelengths, so while I will find it odd to be buying a ticket for a Nada Surf show, I will do so.
How was the crowd -- was the place crowded? And when, oh when, did it end?

I got there early I didnt want to miss it. Half the tyde were in the bar and all of kaleidoscope sounds, whom I dindt recognise. Its was dead in there at that time. But by the time the tyde came on, around 11 it was pretty full. The crowd were ok. But it was hard to judge as we were right at the front and if you turn round you cant see hell of a lot. It seemed a few other people were shouting out for songs though.
The merchandise table was really busy at the end of the show and it looked like they shifted a handy number of copies of twice. It was done by around 12.30. I got home just gone 1.
-
Tyde actually went on about 11:30, and must have finished about 12:30, it was a fairly short set. And Bags, if you listened to the newest Nada Surf you might be surprised and actually enjoy. go to www.nadasurf.com (http://www.nadasurf.com) to listen
-
I just listened to some nada surf,
Its quite straightforword melodic pop isnt it? Its awfully close to bland?

Oh Ok, there is no need to get defensive, I just wondered if I was missing something. I can see more behind the tyde than that. The bitter lrics and drug induced failures are offset nicely by some of the saccharine melodies. Like the beach boys turned old and bitter.
Now try and justify nada surf, without resorting to an attack.

sorry I dont really like to get into defending music on here anymore, I was just trying to allow Bags (who seems to have a bad impression of Nada Surf possibly from their hit years ago) to hear newer Nada Surf. I especially dont want to get in to defending music to someone who has admitted never liking music the first time he hears it and using the same argument about the music he hears being bland everytime he hears it the first time.

I think Markie and Bob Pollard should duke it out on the undercard of the Jaguar - Poorlulu bout.

fine, I have asked before what you liked about nada surf and you never have given me a real answer. Looks like I will never know.
There are plenty of things I have liked on first listen, but they normally trun out to be outstanding in my opinion. Like Delgados hate or even DBT southen rock opera.
Often things I grow to like later I dont like on the first listen, but isnt everyone like that?

I havent yelled at rhett in ages. When I did the only thing I really remember taking umbrage with was the use of certain racial terms.

Oh, nothing of that sort. Just the music arguments.

Possibly, but there is one little thing missing. Poorlulu. All along it's been Markie trying to get his woman to to do his fighting for him. Hell, Poorlulu and I will just get together and have fun and let Markie stew it out with Pollard or whomever else he feels like picking on at the moment. :p

I just asked Jadetree to justify his fondness of a certain band. Is that so weird on a, where are we again, music forum?
I didnt say he should only listen to alt-country the moment he passes 32.

Well we gotta talk about something when it gets quiet on here, havent we?
As for the first part, do you think Lulu was ecstatic about her looks being compared to those of Ms Lewinsky?

Here you go Markie - when I listen to Nada Surf, I enjoy it, is it justified now
-
To Jaguar's credit, she didn't compare Poorlulu's looks to Ms. Lewinsky's. You did, Markie.

have you ever thought about what makes you enjoy it?

no I really dont think so. She alluded to three people from the board being the three people in the photograph, yes?
One male, two women, yes?
Jaguar said she didnt have the drink the big smile and the glasses, yes?
Therefore what is the conclusion?
is that simple enough a recap?
-
Alright, so it'll be a Pollard-Jaguar-Thirsty tagteam match against The Mad Scientist.
Sweet....
-
well if bland pop if what you seek i can probably rustle up some...
based on the 30 second sound bytes on the nadasurf website, i heard loads of variety with a bit of spot the influence. i.e. elliot smith and the church. not bad and i can see why bob would enjoy listening to it.

Jesus Markie, get over it!
If everyone reacted like you are now to some very innocent playing around with pictures posted here than you would have no friends on this board. Period! Many a time you have posted pictures that were much, much worse of others and alluded or even directly claimed that they were that person, thing or animal. Again, you can dish it out but you can't take it. I saw a picture that reminded me of the recent party and selected 3 people that it could remind me of. Thirsty looked a little like Thurston but the person, in his case, did have something to do with it. The other 2 were only 2 other people at the party, within our group whom I selected based only on the very slightest resemblances, and only visual ones. Even then, I selected based on my closer connections. The women themselves had absofuckinglutely nothing whatsoever to do with the selections.
Markie, go home and get laid or beat off or something. You are too tense this week.

She did allude to three people on the board being the three people in the photograph. One of them being Thurston Moore, and the other two being Monica Lewinsky and Kim Gordon.
The only thing in common that any of us three have with that picture is that I use Thurston Moore's name on the board. Jaguar never said that any of us looked like anyone in the picture. It was name association only.

yes really, I am fine. I brought it up because Jag implied that Lulu and her were going to gang up against me.
I wouldnt have bothered if I knew it would all start again.
I had hoped that someone would have apologised for making that association. Am I not allowed to defend Lulu? Who took the comments the same way I did, as did another person from here.

Where in there do you get the idea that Lulu and I would "gang up against(you)"?
My implication is that we wouldn't even bother.
I wouldnt have bothered if I knew it would all start again.
Somehow I doubt that. I'm sure that you've been dying to start it all over again.

I'm sorry that you are upset but I don't think that I did anything wrong. Nothing but the same games we play on here everyday. It was you who read much, much more into that post than was ever intended and I have no doubt that just about everyone else knew how little it meant. It was 3 people enjoying a party, and that's about all it was.

I can't believe that you are so out of it that I have to detail every tiny little thing here. Monica and Kim have not a thing to do with Lulu nor I. Monica was wearing glasses. Lulu wears glasses. She had a big smile on her face. Lulu had a big smile on her face. She had a drink in her hand. We all had drinks in our hands. For Kim, it was just the blonde hair with bangs which I have. Monica and Kim were standing with Thurston. Lulu and I were hanging out with Thirsty at times.
Does that explain it or do you need more detail?

They told me the Tyde would go on around midnight, and that was just too late. I said to my friends, if it's 11:00, I'm going. *AND* I could have picked up a copy of Twice. It was the idea of getting home after 13:30 a.m. that had me nervous (lotta work today).

I am sorry bags.
I can supply you with a CDR of the tyde if you are desperate to listen to it before the next show.
The bartender was having a bad night. There was no contract with the band, and he was having to look after them as best he could. They were making simple enough demands and had ordinary enough questions, but I think it was awkward for him as he didnt know the details of the contract.

Um, huh. Trying to save face, I see.
And I did no hole digging whatsoever. Guess the world looks upside down in there, ha Markie?
And yes, I know how well you thrive on arguement.
For what it's worth, I consider Lulu my friend and had not the slightest intention of insulting her. Hopefully she will see this much more accurately than you did. She plays those games too so I'm sure she has a much better sense of humor than you do this week.

Ditto -- though 30 second snippets bug the hell out of me. I really can't tell at all, but it's mellower than I would have thought. I will certainly stay around and check them out when they hit the Cat.

Can't answer very accurately because the last album was never released here and the one song I did hear off of it was awful, probably trying to recreate the success of their one hit, which was different, and worse, than the rest of that album (high/low).
oh, and if you watch the videos, they are the full songs, although not the best 3 songs on the album in my opinion, but not bad either

Thanks, Markie. I'll buy the Tyde -- I like to support bands, though it has been tough to find the CD.
And I wasn't there last night, so it wasn't the bartender last night who yelled at me (don't want to cast any aspersions on an innocent bartender!). I had a rough time at the Nighties show. What are ya gonna do. I tend to be there when the place is crowded, so tempers may be a bit more raw.

I bought two copies, one from ebay, $10 and one in a record store for $2.50 two weeks before it was released. I guess neither of them helped the band.
I bought a T-shirt and a single last night to compensate. I am wearing the T now.
Amazon now has Once and Twice together for $28.97. Once imho is better than twice.

I know that www.insound.com (http://www.insound.com) has at least one of their releases as that's where I got an MP3 of theirs from. (Sorry, I didn't bother to go look for you.)
Look around a bit though because Insound can be a bit pricey. It's a great store with a great site but they are paying high NYC rents and salaries.

Star Wars Kid Files Lawsuit - Wired News Report
The parents of the infamous "Star Wars Kid" are suing classmates who posted a humiliating video of their son on the Net, according to Canada's Globe and Mail.
Quebec teenager Ghyslian Raza was the target of worldwide mockery when a private video he made of himself practicing his lightsaber moves was uploaded to the Net by kids at his school.
Now his parents are claiming damages of $160,000 from the families of the four classmates who digitized and published the video. Ghyslain's parents claim their son was so humiliated, he is undergoing psychiatric care and may be marked for life by the experience.
Ghyslain's video was posted to the Kazaa file-sharing network in the spring.
The two-minute video shows an overweight teenager fighting a mock battle with a golf-ball retriever doubling as a lightsaber. The teenager twirls the "lightsaber" ever more energetically while generating his own sound effects. It is obviously not for public consumption.
Ghyslain was so teased about the video, he dropped out of school and finished the semester at a children's psychiatric ward, according to a lawsuit filed in the Raza's hometown of Trois-Rivières, Quebec.
According to the suit, "Ghyslain had to endure, and still endures today, harassment and derision from his high-school mates and the public at large." He "will be under psychiatric care for an indefinite amount of time."
The suit suggests that the ordeal may cause Ghyslain to be labeled as "mentally ill," and the stigma could make it difficult for him to enroll in school or get a job, and may force him to change his name.
Ghyslain's story was reported by media outlets internationally. Angered at the cruel remarks made about Ghyslain online, a pair of webloggers raised money to buy the teenager an Apple iPod.
Andy Baio of Waxy.org and Jish Mukerji of Jish.nu raised more than $4,300 from 421 separate donations.
"The outpouring of support has been staggering, far beyond what I ever expected," wrote Baio on his site. "Geeks like us need to stick together."
A petition to get Ghyslain a part in the next Star Wars movie has been signed by more than 16,000 people.
None of the parties involved in the suit are speaking to reporters, according to the Globe and Mail. Wired News was unable to contact the Razas' lawyer for comment.
