Two rollcalls for the price of one! With moi being the DJ for both shows.
So anyone attending either show planning on going in costume? Wouldn't want to show up being the only one wearing one... I'll be the one dressed as a DJ ;) Or perhaps as in the past wear a homemade Beatles t-shirt and go as Glen Matlock. I'd go as Sir Christopher Wren but the wig is in the shop. Maybe even go as the real Kosmo Vinyl.
Funny story...Got an email from some bird in the UK wondering if I was the same Kosmo Vinyl that drank in such and such pub in 84/85. I politely said no, however I can guess what Mank's answer would have been ;)
Back to whats at hand... Seeing as it's Halloween think I might give the fans a real scare by letting flawd guest DJ whatever he's listening to these days. Death Metal?
Any favorite Halloween tunes?

I'll top that idea with just one word: SACRIFORCE.

nah... for Hanson i might bust out some guilty pleasures like Robbie Williams, Spice Girls and George Micheal. And how often does one get the chance to do the time warp again...
rufus means that i can spin the Twinkle's orginial version of "Golden Lights" and the Rhino Girl Group boxset is in heavy rotation at the moment. Anyone know that Toni Basil, yes that Toni Basil, released a single in 1966 called "I'm 28"?

Any favorite Halloween tunes?
The Ghost and the Black Hat - The Go Betweens
Ghosts for Hire - The Standard
There is a Ghost - Marianne Faithfull
Ghosts - Mark Geary
Little Ghost Song - Nick Cave
Attack of the Ghost Riders - The Raveonettes
-
Don Hinson and The Rigamorticians - Riboflavin-Flavored, Non-Carbonated,
Polyunsatured Blood (there's a halloween mix on the net that has this and a bunch of other weird old halloween tunes, if you have trouble finding it, i can upload it on yousendit.com or something)
somethin by zombina and the skeletones
-
my halloween songs would be something like this:
bauhaus- bela lugosi's dead
alien sex fiend- now i'm feeling zombified
ministry- everyday is like halloween
x-mal deutschland- incubus succubus
screamin jay hawkins- i put a spell on you (i know cheesy, but if you there, might as well also go with some alice cooper)
course, you could also just play the entire oeuvre of helloween.
also, i like that idea to play "time warp" before hanson.

I think this will be a hilarious show to DJ...think about the transition from songs for the OK Go crowd to songs for the Rufus crowd. I was thinking about that last night when I found out you're DJing. Do you transition halfway between the two bands, does Rufus get more attention because he's the headliner, blah blah.
I will be at the show, in costume as an OK Go fan from 2 years ago (in comparison to a new fan who saw their video online and caught them on Good Morning America and thinks they're so funny and cute...). Don't know how much of Rufus I'll stay for, but some. Which means, K, that I'll be hearing much more of your set than I usually do!
-
How different will an OK Go crowd and a Rufus Wainright crowd really be?
It's not like we're talking about Merle Haggard or Luis Miguel playing with Rufus Wainright.

would have to say that part of the OkGo crowd will be younger and female into energetic pop songs, while the Rufus crowd will be a mixed older crowd, with a gay contigent which like more sophisticated pop... any certainly there will be fans of both bands there. it's also possible the OkGo crowd got scared away by the ticket price too.
needless to say i usually try to save my top shelf stuff for between bands which will be along the lines of Cardinal, Magic Numbers, John Hoskinson, and keep the fun stuff for from when doors open.

Which of these two completely distict categories do you fit into?

Absolutely...I have friends not coming (not even young girls!) because of the price tag. It's a crime...OK Go better come back on their own.
FYI, you can see 5 live performances by OK Go on Rolling Stone'swebsite (http://www.rollingstone.com/artist/_/id/38615/okgo)

What can I say, I'm an old chick into the energetic pop. The inconsistencies are just going to get worse the older I get. Though give me David Sylvian or Duncan Sheik anyday...(Rufus' voice annoys me).

Then how can you be sure that there aren't plenty of other square pegs who don't fit into your/Kosmo's narrow little stereotypes (which to me still aren't that far apart from one another)?
To me, an OK-Go/Rufus pairing is comparable to a Def Leppard/Bryan Adams pairing.

How about this...."whatever." You want me to have narrow little stereotypes. I think the pairing's more akin to Liz Phair and Jason Mraz.

Which one plays the OkGo role of energetic kiddie rock and which takes the Rufus role of sophisticated adult gay pop? :D

Excellent choices, imho. ;)
With there being a bit of a Gay contingent and it being Halloween, bringing out their wild sides, I think that I would also add
Soft Cell - Sex Dwarf
and sneak in some fun Glam such as
New York Dolls - maybe Personality Crisis
Also, for the still into younger cartoons set for the 1st time around, I'd definitely include
Gorillaz - (whatever)
and maybe some
Puffy Yumi Ami or whatever they are called, for that schoolgirl Anime(sp?) touch.

You guys have it all completely wrong. This is my third Rufus show already, and I can tell you right now; he attracts more women to his shows than males--even homosexuals. Ok Go has quite a large male fan base too, but I'd say that the show will be inhabited by a good mix of everyone. There actually are very few "young" pop-driven girls that are into Ok Go. It'll be a lot of college-age gals and guys for Ok Go, and middle-aged women and gay men for Rufus. Or, at least, that's what Ok Go's crowd has been...it might be different due to all the press and "cutesy music video" tabs they've gotten for Oh No.
There will be very, very different crowds though. Most of my friends that are into Ok Go do NOT like Rufus (I've heard most of the same critiques about disliking his voice...), and most of the kids that I know that are into Rufus wouldn't know who Ok Go were if they hit them on the head. But, of course, I'll be there for both (moreso for Ok Go though); ever-defying the stereotypes. Yay for me.
Kosmo, you better play The Monster Mash. Where will you be, so I can come say hello? My friends and I will be the girls dressed up as OK Go...I'm assuming that the "I'm-So-Hipster" DC crowd will majority NOT be actually dressing up. You should see how they do Halloween shows in LA...insanity...& so much more fun there.

She's right. Saw Rufus at Wolf Trap last year. In the bathroom, after his set, was a (for lack of a better word) gaggle of late teens/early twenties girls chirping on and on about how sexy and cute he is and how they were going to try to track down his hotel so they could hook up with him.
I didn't have the heart to burst their bubble and tell them there was no chance of a hook up. Even if they found his hotel.

HAHAHA! That's completely amazing. I just met him at The Wiltern in LA this summer after a show, and it was all pretty much girls, and Ben Folds fans, crowded behind the venue to meet him. Poor guy. Women think he's "cute," because he's gay. Give me a break. Coming from one of the biggest gay-rights advocates in the DC area...that makes me sick. It's so wonderful that he's gay and all and completely open about it--that's fabulous; but people that listen to him deliberately because he's gay and enjoy going out on a limb to tell others that "hey, we're politically hip and cool and tolerant and listen to Rufus Wainwright!" are just making the problem worse. I'm sorry, but that wouldn't constitute at ALL towards equality.

That prediction thrills me, as I'm in the OK Go camp. ;)

HAH, same here! But, I mean, the reality is that EVERYONE should come see them...right? They are probably the most fun live band out there right now. I'm already excited, and hope they get in at least a good hour set...god I love those guys. Stay for Rufus, too. I really didn't like him in the beginning and it has taken me almost two years to finally get into his music, but now that I have I'm REALLY REALLY liking it.

aren't you confusing them with the go! team?
-
ok i'm guilty of talking out of ass i was basing my opinion on very little first hand research... oh well..
monster mash is on the short list if i can track it down in time.. and the dj booth is past the coat check area in the balcony, but since the coat check will be active it will be hard to catch my attention...
-
Hey, Kosmo. I just happened to coincidently run across something that is perfect for you for any rocking Halloween gig.
Bet you Dupek knows them.
Well, their music, that is.
The Ghastly Ones
<img src="http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000007OSU.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg" alt=" - " />
A-Haunting We Will Go-Go
A cool mix of Surf and Horror.

Young lady, you need to see Sloan. Next time they're in town I will talk to your parents, you ARE going to see them. ;)

Beyond "Monster Mash"
The A.V. Club's Definitive Mixlist (http://avclub.com/content/node/41957)
-
Thanks for the suggestions but given the popularity of these acts, think I best be sticking with the hits. Although "Everyday Is Halloween" is on the short list. Am also considering a couple less obvious songs such as Beautiful South "Women In The Wall" with it's Poe type narrative. "I Put A Spell" CCR as well...
-
for some reason i've always thought of "for the benefit of mr. kite" as a halloween song ... i think it scared me when i was 5 years old or something

Just put on some Residents and watch everyone run out screaming.
The Cramps are always good for Halloween fun too.

Oh, I ADORE Sloan! I wanted to see them ridiculously badly when they came in the spring, I flipped out...but it was a school night. And none of my friends here like them anyway. A good friend of mine who loves Ok Go is currently obsessed with The Go! Team...so I shall check them out definitement.
Kosmo, what about after the show? I just realized too we'll be there early to secure front-row spots, which means no balcony going for moi...
-
hmmm can't make any promises about after the show... the coat check will likely be hopping with activity and djs aren't always used after the band is over.
-
well then, all i can say is if you see a bunch of girls dressed up like sexy, flamboyant men, and one of them isn't blonde--or short; come say hello.
-
So Betty, apparently, you've convinced Mom. ;)
What did the trick?

Every day is like Halloween - Ministry (Or was that too obvious)
Yo-yo-yo, Mr. DJ, if you're spinning at the Hanson gig y'all, give a shout out to my daughter willya bro? (seriously, check pm)

Dead mans party - Oingo Boingo, or most any of their stuff for that matter.
Anything by Dead Can Dance
Suffer little children, The Simths

I think you should play The Rakes' song Terror! at full volume. (For anyone who hasn't heard The Rakes album yet, you should check it out.)

Nooo, have certaintly NOT convinced the parents. We just bought our tickets to this show before they decided to ban me from the club...meh heh heh. My straight-A report card is coming soon though, for awesome ammo. Though my Rooney show just sold out...I'll have to, like, prostitute my way in or something. That is, after they say yes. And I mean, to the show; not just the prostituting.
Oh boy am I weird...
-
Yea or Nay on "Bohemian Rhapsody" at the Rufus show tonigth...

I would say yea

yea

Only if it's Suzie's version, not Mig's.
