Title: Beastie Boys at Patriot Center
Post by: Lamb007 on August 09, 2004, 05:00:00 pm
Rumored for October 8.  Please god say it ain't so.  There is no worse play to see a show.  Merriweather would be amazing.  MCI would be tolerable.  Patriot Center = I'd rather skip it.

Merriweather in October?  Have things changed in the DC climate since I left?

October is still pleasant.  Incubus is there Oct. 11th.  Nissan has shows as late as Oct 17th.  The Jane's Addiction show in 2001 was in October. It was chilly but still memorable.  Personally, I'd rather be at Merriweather on a cold early autumn night than a sultry, steam bath July evening.

If you've ever seen a show at Pat Center, you understand.

Yeah...we all pretty much guessed this would happen...I'll skip.

i've only been to 1 show at each of these places i'm going to mention, but i'd much rather go to a show at the patroit center than at merriweather, constitution hall or the mci center.  i only had bad experiences at all of those places.

i don't live in dc, though.

i'd rather see a show at the pat center than at merriweather. i saw some really great shows there, like oasis and the cure, and definitely prefer it to an outdoor venue in maryland. but hey, i live in virginia.

I friggin' HATE the Patriot Center. They should do the MCI at that point. I'm really not a fan of concerts at either place, but getting to the PC is a pain in the ass. We need a venue on a Metro stop that is roughly that size. Too bad we don't have a venue like the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. Now THAT would be cool.

Anybody who says they don't like Merriweather obviously wasn't in attendance on Friday for Curiosa.  It's an outstanding place to see a "big show."  Arenas are for sports and tractor pulls.

I would agree there...Merriweather was AWESOME, I think it has become my favorite outdoor venue as far as big outdoor places go. My sister, who has been to many of these places (among them Nissan, Hi-Fi Buys in Atlanta, Tweeter Center in Chicago, etc.), says that it was by far the coolest place to see a show of that size and capacity. I would rather see the Beasties play there.

Ditto to the positive comments on Merriweather; I wish there were more bands playing there I want to see this summer/Fall.

I, too, hate Patriot Center.  Pretty amazing that the Beasties wouldn't sell out MCI, though R.E.M. didn't, did they....I swear, I don't get this whole concert thing.

i was actually at curiosa. i had a much better time than my previous merriweather gigs (radiohead and the black crowes/oasis), but i still prefer the patriot center. but again, it's a geographical thing. does anyone really want to get stuck in maryland traffic for hours?

To tell the truth, megs, I'd take Maryland traffic over VA traffic any day.  I've never been caught as badly in MD and I have in VA (not including the beltway, which is just yuckola all around, and why I never get on it...)

i've been to hifi in atlanta, pnc in holmdel, tweeter in camden, pine knob outside detroit, blockbuster in charlotte, jones beach on long island, montage mountain in scranton, hershey amphitheater in hershey, parc jean drapeau in montreal, etc. and the only place i'd rather go less than merriweather is camden.

tops for me on that list were montreal and holmdel, probably.  atlanta's not too bad.

hey.. holmdel's in jersey and it's not too bad at all.  hop off the garden state parkway and you're lead straight into the lot.  lot exits right onto the GSP.

no way!! everytime i drive to/through maryland, i get stuck in something. it's like people can't figure out the lane shift or something. kurosawa and i were inexplicably stuck in traffic for over an hour on the way back from the gig. va traffic might be heavy, but it is not nearly as hellacious as maryland traffic. *shudder*

as far as VA traffic goes, i NEVER have a problem getting in to dc (to 930) unless there's an accident or something.  i've done the drive from richmond in 1.5 hours before (to the club, not just to dc) and i don't speed ridiculously.

i have no complaints about va traffic. i've run into much worse traffic in maryland than va.

Living in the Baltimore area and doing way more than my share of driving between DC and Baltimore I can say that more often than not, I end up in major traffic jams going into DC way more than coming home. Then again, I'm going in usually for a show so it's earlier.

After the show on Friday at Merriweather, I encountered almost no traffic at all coming back to Baltimore. It was a breeze!

Having done plenty of driving in the MD/DC/VA area, I'd have to say that they all suck equally when you are in it at the wrong time. It can be especially nerve racking when you aren't familiar with an area because you don't know their patterns and they aren't always consistant between states. However I have found that if there is a very large degree of traffic very late at night, it's more often than not somewhere in the DC area, specifically the Capital Beltway. I can only assume that Rt. 66 might get like that too.

For what it's worth, I'm totally blown away by how drastically Merriweather has changed. It's still a hike for me but one I've learned to take if I'm going to have a life that just isn't happening in Baltimore. Also, I don't care who plays at the Patriot Center, I'm NOT going!

What is it about Oct. 8th? Q and Not U are at Black Cat. Hope of the States are at 9:30 Club. And now it is possible that the Beasties are at Patriot Center. I will miss it all because I will be in Tampa seeing the Pixies. A popular night for concerts. I recommend Hope of the States out of all of them, by the way. Q and Not U will be around again, and the Beasties are at that arena. (I agree that I would rather see BB at Merriweather. I'm not completely anti-Patriot, but Merriweather has better sound + atmosphere.)

Kurosawa, personally I'll take your Pixies ticket and get my ass down to Tampa if you're really that torn!  :)  I was just listening to my Coachella CD last night and I just cannot wait until I see the Pixies in CHicago in November. I am halfway thinking about going to Bumbershoot so I can see them then.

anyway, i don't really care where the beasties play, as long as i get to see them. and as long as whfs aren't the only people with tickets.

Oh yeah, its always been one hell of a time getting to Merriweather through that MD traffic no matter what concert it is there. Dang that Incubus is playing at Merriweather on a weekday in October, I sure can't go. And then they play at the Richmond Coliseum a day or two later, should've just played east coast first but ah whatever

Oh no, I'm not torn. Just commenting on the popularity of the night. The Pixies win hands down!

Holmdel SUCKS.  WOrst amphitheater I have ever been to.  the whle damn thing is on such an incline even the sober folks have a hard time standing up.  Then they run big ass power cables down all the aisle by the boat load.  Lets not even talk about the piss quality of the sound system.

i've been very close to the stage every time i've gone.  i didn't find the sound to be that bad where i was sitting.  i have no sympathy for someone that drinks so much they can't stand, even if it is on an incline.

Except for getting through downtown Baltimore traffic on a Friday afternoon, I didn't have any traffic problems going to Merriweather either. Never left the state of Maryland and still had a long drive. Seems to me that the mess was in the DC area or NOVA.

Guess I'm one of the lucky ones for Oct. 8th as I don't really like Q And Not U, can't stand the Beastie Boys and won't be in Tampa. It's Hope Of The States all the way for me!     :D     Just heard from a friend of mine in Australia that the HOTS show the other day was fantastic and his best show of the year to date.

Good call.  So that means the actual ticket is only $48.50, which is still way too much to spend.

I hopped on 20 minutes past 10 and couldn't get GA seats, so forget that. I really am not a fan of assigned seats for the Patriot Center. I love the Beasties, but it's just not worth the aggravation to be stuck in the nosebleed section.
