Title: Roll Call: Rhett Miller
Post by: Charlie Nakatestes, Japanese Golfer on July 31, 2003, 09:22:00 am
Where are you possibly going to hear cover songs of artists from Elvis Presley and Bing Crosby to the Pixies and the Ramones, all in the same set? Well you'r egoing to have to be a the Black Cat Saturday Night. Showtime is 7 pm, there is an opener, and it all has to finish before 10 pm, since there is a separate show following that.

I've seen Rhett solo four times on this tour, but this is the performance I'm most looking forward to. This time, he won't be limited by a hired backing band whose knowledge of his back (Old 97's) catalog is limited. Nor will he suffer from the time limitations and marginal crowd interest that being an opening act present.

I'll be the big wuss with trendy glasses, short hair, goatee, medium height and build, with the pretty wife. I know that all makes me sound like Mankie, but I'm really a totally different person.

no, they were quite nice actually, and while standing there, I realized that the woman taking tickets was the drummer I saw while getting soaked by rain before D Plan on Monday night

Anybody know if the Food for Thought Cafe food is edible, and if it would open before the 7 PM showtime?

i heard it isn't that bad, but i've never tried it myself. it might open early because of the early showtime, too.

We will be at the cafe for dinner at 7, and go up to the show after that. Looking forward to seeing Markie, Lulu, Mr. Pollard, and whomever else comes!

I think I will be there. Any idea whether this show migh sell out? Thought about the opening band?

We bought tickets ten days ago. When I asked how well it was selling, the Black Cat guy said, "Not well at all." But that was ten days ago. Still, I very much doubt it will sell out.

The first time we saw Rhett play the Cat, a band called the Damnwells opened. The lead singer is doing a solo set opening this show. Kind of generic modern rock...my wife said they sounded like the Goo Goo Dolls, but maybe they weren't quite as slick.

Another excellent show by the Rhettster.

Sorry we weren't able to follow some of you down into the 'hood. A nine mile run, plus standing still for a couple of hours spelled the need to be sitting down for both of us.

Fico: nice to meet you and your pretty girlfriend.

Glad you all enjoyed the show!

Likewise Rhett... I know you were happy to have him play tons of Old 97s tracks... me and my bird are more fans of "the Instigator" since it was the record that introduced us to Rhett.. but it was a good time... I would have traded 4 eyed girl and the El for two other songs from the album ..oh well...

ps: your "the Cure" t-shirt was spot-on!

...which I hope he made himself, wouldn't want the Rhettster to be a hypocrit now would we?

Bought it in 1987 for $10 or so on the Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me tour. I don't have a problem with $10 t-shirts...that's one of the reasons for having t-shirts by lesser known bands...it's the #30-$40 t-shirts I have a problem with.

 $10 in 87 is probably about $20+ today~! Do you have a problem with $20 T-shirts?  ;)

Actually, assuming concert T-shirts kept pace with overall consumer price inflation, the price should be $16.19.

Not true. Using the inflation calculator linked for this page:

 http://www.bls.gov/bls/inflation.htm (http://www.bls.gov/bls/inflation.htm)

you will find that $10 in 1987 is now worth $16.17 in 2003.

While $16 seems a tad bit high for a t-shirt, I guess it's acceptable if the band is your absolute favorite, as the Cure was for me in 1987.  :)

They don't give much info on their methodology.  Is the base the average CPI for 1987?  Or the year-end index?  All Urban Consumers?  Seasonally-Adjusted?

Beats me. But the "About this calculator" link says:
The CPI inflation calculator uses the average Consumer Price Index for a given calendar year. This data represents changes in prices of all goods and services purchased for consumption by urban households. This index value has been calculated every year since 1913. For the current year, the latest monthly index value is used.
 And this link: http://www.bls.gov/dolfaq/blsfaqtoc.htm (http://www.bls.gov/dolfaq/blsfaqtoc.htm)
answers a number of CPI related questions.
