Title: Anyone seeing Prince this weekend @ MCI?
Post by: jardison on August 10, 2004, 11:22:00 am
Who's seeing Prince this weekend at MCI?  I am very excited, but I have heard terrible things about shows at MCI.  I saw Tool there years ago and remebered the show not being terrible (although I am not a Tool fan).  They say Prince's stage is in the center of arena so everyone can see.

As far as major arenas go, I have no major complaints about MCI. It's a big place, but not as huge as other venues I've been to like the United Center in Chicago. It certainly beats the old US Air Arena (aka Capital Center).

I am interested in finding out about an after hours show.  Apparently, Prince has been having one in each city he visits.  It's going to be a great show!

I'll be there Saturday night.  Hope it's better than the Patriot Center show a couple of years back.

Yeah, I'll be there on Saturday.  What happened at the Patriot Show?

I'm there Friday.  I think the round configuration is going to be great and more seats will be really good.  I'm not much of an audiophile, so I can't speak much to sound issues, but I've always enjoyed MCI shows.  Patriot Center is awful; this should be a great show.

So it is a round stage?

Yup, theater in the round.  I mean, I don't know if the stage is actually ROUND, but it will be in the middle and you can see from everywhere, and he'll play to all sides.

I'll be there Thursday night. A friend of mine living in Ohio said it was a great show when he saw it out there.

yup I'm going on Thursday; way psyched. Ya know we all get free copies of the "Musicology" CD just by producing a ticket ?!  Now that's the deal; I've been waiting for years for someone to do this and justify the high ticket prices.  This is going to be my 5th or 6th Prince show ... first time was way back in 1981, at the Tower theater in Philly, the tour for "Controversy".  The Time was the opening act, and the Prince show climaxed with him guitar-soloing on top of a speaker ... the famous 'ejaculating' guitar spraying out over the audience ... AWEsome !

Does anyone know what time these shows are supposed to start, and whether there is an opener?  I may try to get a ticket just before the show.

BTW, I think the whole album giveaway thing was a way for Prince to get the record to the top of the Billboard charts, since they were recorded as sales at the time the tickets were purchased -- every seat sold on the tour counts as an album sale, something Prince hasn't been able to do in probably more than a decade.

I think there's no opener and showtime is 8:00 p.m.

 PRINCE ā??MUSICOLOGY TOURā? ADDS
 3rd AND FINAL WASHINGTON CONCERT
ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 14 AT MCI CENTER

 Tickets are on sale now!

Pop icon Prince and the New Power Generationā??s coast-to-coast Musicology concert tour of North America is proving to be ā??the must-seeā? tour of summer 2004. A third and final Washington show has just been added on Saturday, August 14 at MCI Center at 8:00 p.m., following two sold-out shows on August 12 & 13. Tickets for the August 14 performance are on sale now.

Ticket demand for the Musicology tour has been unprecedented and concert dates continue to be added nationwide. Six concert dates are currently scheduled in the New York tri-state area, five in Southern California and Chicago and three in Detroit, Atlanta, St. Paul, Washington, DC and the Bay Area. Two shows are scheduled in Las Vegas, Dallas, Toronto, Boston, Philadelphia, Denver and Seattle.

The tour comes on the heels of Princeā??s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and his heart-stopping Grammy opening performance with multiple-award-winner Beyonce. The highly acclaimed new CD, Musicology, was released on April 20 on Columbia Records and is now available in stores.

The concert features Prince per4ming some of his most well known hits live 4 the last time and also includes music from the album Musicology. The ticket price includes the new CD and concert attendees will receive it at the show. A center-stage, in the round production allows Prince fans unique sight lines.

Prince has sold more than 100 million records and is regarded by fans and critics alike as a monumental force and influence in popular culture. During the ā??80s, Prince emerged as one of the most singular talents in the history of music, releasing a series of groundbreaking albums that both defined and captured the spirit of the times. With each successive album, Prince has shown remarkable stylistic growth and musical diversity, constantly experimenting with different sounds, topics and genres. Few artists have created a body of work as rich and varied.

Each show is one long dance party with Prince supplying the music!  The production lives within the players themselvesā?¦no gimmicks, no pre-recorded music and no prisoners taken! Performing with Prince are New Power Generation band members John Blackwell (drums), Greg Boyer (trombone), Candy Dulfer (saxophone), Chance Howard (trumpet), Renato Neto (piano and synthesizers), Maceo Parker (saxophone), RAD (vocals and keyboards), and Rhonda Smith (bass).

My friend from Ohio said on the second night they brought out Morris Day and The Time, I don't know what songs or how many. Talk about old school.

If they do that Friday, a friend of mine will have a massive head explosion right there in the midst of the crowd...

Last time around there was an afterparty at 2:K:9 (right across from the club).  Me and a friend showed up and hung around for a while, but no Prince.

prince ROCKED the house tonight. thank god because i've seen him a few times prior in the last ten years and have been sorely disappointed.

2.5 hours of great music. though the sound was really f'd for the first 20 minutes. surprising because the mci generally has a decent sound system. strange, but true!

he did nearly 40 minutes of acoustic stuff, with an absolutely breath taking version of "adore". "pop life" was fabulous as well, with the band.

he has maceo parker on tour with him, plus another sax player and a trombone player.

he was on at 8.20, with a 7.30 posted time on the tickets so for those of you going fri/sat, i think you'd be safe getting there around 8.45 if the posted time is 8 pm.

its center stage too so if your seats are in the middle of the mci, like ours were, you'll have a great view. video screens in all 4 directions.

there are lots of ticket scalpers outside so if you don't have tickets yet, i think you could get some, less than face value. also, remember that the ticket price includes musicology.

i'm thinking about going again tommorow or saturday. though i really want to watch the opening ceremonies.

and we saw it several times. i don't think he was wear undies as there were no undies lines, or he was wearing a thong. which, i wouldn't put past him.

This is the 1st time I saw Prince live. It was an excellent show. 2.5 hours of great music. This was the best concert I saw this year.

I thought the concert was good, It was worth it but I do think the MCI shows for MaDonna and Van Halen were better. I thought the accoustics were too long and the wrong songs (except for the shopping song of course). Also, he didnt play Erotic City which is my fav. Prince song. He didnt play Gett Off either, but I guess thats cause he's the new and improved clean Prince. But he played Cream....hmmmmmmm......I also had someone behind me singing every single word to every single song, picture Anthony Anderson's voice as a heavy set black female voice and thats what I had to go through. All in all, it was great to see him for the first time, but that was about it.

Oh yeah, I thought the ending with Purple Rain was really good!!!!!!!!!!

That acoustic set could've lasted all night for me.  I'd love to hear more of his songs stripped down like that.

There aren't many artists who can really work a crowd and make such a big building seem like a small place.

yeah the sound was surprisingly bad .... they should have had more speakers aimed directly at the upper levels, instead of just toward the lower sections.  Still, it was a rockin' good show, and Prince is a marvel.  The acoustic set was awesome, especially "Cream", "Adore" and "Sweet Thing".  My fave tunes of the night were "Pop Life", "Controversy", and "DMSR".  Plus tantalizing bits of "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" and "Sometimes it Snows in April" .. maybe he'll do those tonight and tomorrow.  Enjoy !!

I went on Saturday night, at the last second. I got good seats though, 400 level but in the first row, so we had no one blocking us, and i think the sound was better than if we'd been higher up.  It wasnt the best, but i wont complain.

Prince is the man, and one of the best guitar players around.  i didnt know too much of the stuff.  A Medley of hits in the early goings and then some stuff at the end.

I like the acoustic stuff the best, along with the Zeppelin cover and the last song (Purple Rain) was great too.

He's an amazing performer, and I'm very glad i chose to stay in Balt/DC (instead of going to NYC) and seeing him once.

It was also cool to get his new CD  free upon arrival!

Prince was awesome on Saturday night!  The show was a 2.5 hour funk jam that was backed up by an amazing band (Maceo Parker on sax!!).  I was up in the 400 level and people were dancing like crazy.  Also, since he was in DC, Prine did a tribute to the go-go genre by doing exceptional covers of Bustin' Loose and Pass the Peas.  Definitely one of the best shows I have seen this year.  Did I mention that 1/3 of crowd was dressed up as if they were going to the Players Ball.  What fun!

I went Friday and was down in section 113, four rows up from the floor.  Fabulous.  It was a fantastic show, as I thought it would be.  Prince is just so good, and his band is so good -- it's the antithesis to big arena shows like Britney, Madonna, etc., which is all "broadway spectacle" rather than musicianship.  And yet, he's also so exciting to watch.  A guitar is simply liguid in his hands.

Didn't want to go a second night, though, as the setlist appears to be the same every night...

SAT night..2 hours and 45 minutes...37 songs...Chuck Brown and Zeppelin covers were both great...the sound was very good on SAT...Maceo is truly the best sideman ever...Prince is THE BEST live performer...AND he writes all his songs and plays almost every intrument....period.

For those who went Saturday night, Did Prince happen to pick Sonick out of the crowd to go up on stage and do his little R&B dancing for a few songs?
