Title: New Broken Social Scene leaked
Post by: xcanuck on August 23, 2005, 11:41:00 am
The new self-titled BSS cd (originally called Windsurfing Nation) has been leaked a month ahead of it's release. You can find it at Soulseek and apparently there are other links in the BSS Forum (at the Arts and Crafts site).

I just got the whole thing (minus the last song and the bonus EP - for some reason, they never made it out) and am listening to it now.

Kevin Drew from BSS posted on their  site (http://www.arts-crafts.ca/bss/index2.html).
Doesn't sound like he's much too happy about it but what did you expect?

Looking forward to tour dates in the late fall.

(after one listen)

didn't quite hit me like YFIIP, but that can change once i hear the final version with all the songs flowing into one another. it still sounds really good.

"hotel" and "7/4 shoreline" are excellent.

I haven't listened to it, but I can tell you it's pretty mediocre.   ;)

It seems to be alot more produced than YFIP and I'm not hearing the girls as much. I've heard some of these songs live (7/4, Majour Label Debut, Fire Eye'd Boy, and Superconnected come to mind) and they've all sounded MUCH better live.

All the more reason to see them live when they go on tour. There is talk of just hitting LA, NYC, Mtl, Tor, and Van in Oct and delaying the full tour until 2006. The Mtl date is already set for 10/26.

I don't understand this post. Are you a fan of this group? If so why would you spread the word to others to go and download the "leaked" album that the band is clearly not happy about?

Maybe it's just me, but if I stumbled across something like that I wouldn't go and spread the word. It's one thing when it's a band like Metallica who has already cemented themselves as a success, but for a band trying to make their way this could truly hurt them.

Is there any place I can download this without installing a soulseek or a bittorrent program on my computer? If anyone wanted to, say, PM me a link, I'd appreciate it, and would pre-order the album through a website before I downloaded it.

I don't believe leaks like this hurt a band.

The music will all eventually be available online. Whether it happens now or later doesn't really matter so I don't think the leak is going to take away from sales.

Further, I think that this kind of buzz actually helps the band. What's the old saying that any publicity is good publicity?

From a personal point of view, I will definitely buy the CD (already have it pre-ordered, actually).

I'm curious to know how you think a leak like this will hurt the band?

The DC date was posted on the Just Announced thread but here are the full set of dates and openers (so far):

 Wednesday October 19, 2005   Kingston, ON   Grant Hall@Queens ($18)
Thursday October 20, 2005   Ottawa, ON   Capitol Music Theatre($18)
Saturday October 22, 2005   Montreal, QC   Metropolis   w/MEG
Saturday October 22, 2005   Boston, MA   Avalon Ballroom($20)   w/ Feist
Monday October 24, 2005   Philadelphia, PA   Theatre of Living Arts($20) no opener listed
Wednesday October 26, 2005   Washington, DC   9:30 Club($20)    no opener listed
Thursday October 27, 2005   Detriot, MI   Majestic Theatre($16)   w/ Feist
Friday October 28, 2005   Chicago, IL   Metro ($20)   w/ Feist
Saturday October 29, 2005   Minneapolis, MI   First Ave($16)   w/ Feist
 Monday October 31, 2005   Lawrence, KS   Granada($14)   w/ Feist
Tuesday November 1, 2005   Boulder, CO   Boulder Theatre($18)   w/ Feist

Tuesday November 8, 2005   Los Angeles, CA   Fonda Theatre($23)   w/ Feist
Wednesday November 9, 2005   San Francisco, CA   The Grand($22)   w/ Feist
 Friday November 11, 2005   Portland, OR   Roseland($16)   w/ Feist
Saturday November 12, 2005   Seattle, WA   Showbox Theatre($15)   w/ Feist
Sunday November 13, 2005   Vancouver, BC   Commodore Ballroom($25)
Tuesday November 15, 2005   Calgary, AB   MacEwan Hall($20)
 Wednesday November 16, 2005   Edmonton, AB   Reds($20)
Friday November 18, 2005   Winnipeg, MB   Rendezvous

Note that there aren't any openers listed for DC and Philly. Then take a look at Stars tour schedule (with DCFC). Then consider that Feist is opening before Philly and after DC. This leads me to believe that DC and Philly will be triple bills with Stars, Feist, and BSS. In which case, I can die a happy man.  :)

I wasn't thinking so much a triple bill as I was that Amy would show up at those particular BSS shows.

Yeah - I'm thinking big. But given that half of Stars (Amy and Evan) are also in BSS, it almost a sure thing they'll show up. And since half of Stars are there, they might as well bring the other two along and turn it into a menage a trois. Time will tell.

I'm curious how it is that you think it won't hurt the band? Maybe you're such a fan that you'll buy the album when it hits stores, but let's face it most people won't spend money on something they can get for free.

I'm not saying it will or won't help or hurt the band, but given the limited number of responses to this thread I don't think you're creating much of a "buzz". And then there is the question of the band not being happy with the album being leaked. Perhaps the version being downloaded isn't the mastered version and they don't want new listeners hearing a less than perfect copy?

I'm not the downloading police or anything. I really don't care one way or the other what people do in the privacy of their own homes. I simply question the logic of someone who is clearly a fan of this band to advertise to others how to rip off said band?

The music will be available eventually one way or the other. I have no doubt about that. So what do I care if they d/l the leaked version or the 'official' version? It's really a moot point if they have no intention to pay for it anyways.

Surely it rubs some people the wrong way when people d/l a leaked version of something. And it's fine if that's the way it is with you. But when you net it all out, I highly doubt that it will hurt any band.

remember that when the broken social scene hype was generated, their album was not available in the states. i had to have a friend in victoria, bc buy a cd at a show and send it to me. i didn't have dsl at the time, but they became hotshit through downloading. why stop now?

i don't want to get all chuck d on ya'll, but there are many reasons why an artist (especially an indie artist) would embrace the free viral trading of their music

Again I return to the original post that began this thread. Here's the truth as I see it: 1. xcanuck is clearly a fan of this band 2. he posted a thread telling people to go and download a "leaked" copy of their yet to be released album 3. in the same breath he let us know that the band is none too happy about the album being leaked.

So I ask myself as a fan of a certain band, if I was privy to such knowledge would I spread the word knowing that the band was not happy about the situation?

I guess my own personal rules of integrity would not permit me to go and spread that information. But hey that's just me, you guys clearly know what's best for this groups career.

Again, I'm not saying that this is a good thing or a bad thing. I'm just here to play devils advocate and ask how it is that you justify this in your own mind or if you really care at all? To tell the truth I don't care one way or the other.

I can see both sides of the argument: downloading definitely hurts the band (I only download pre-releases if I've pre-ordered the CD), but on the other hand, it's not as though with Pitchfork and other media agencies running stories that it's leaked that this person's post contributed, even in a small part, to the mass downloading of the album.

Who, honestly, downloaded the album and wouldn't have sans this thread?

I agree.

It's still something to think about though.

if there's ever a band that downloading put on the map, its bss. they would not be playing the 930 club if it wasn't for soulseek

sure pitchfork broke the band, but you couldn't buy the record in the states when the article came out. everyone got it through soulseek, which is/was mostly pitchfork nerds anyway
