I shall be there.
Any thoughts on the opening bands? I just noticed White Magic is also opening for Fiery Furnaces at The Black Cat. I tried allmusic, but after waiting about 30 seconds for the front page to load, I bailed. Are they worth arriving early?
-
I'll be there as well.
White Magic were pretty great the one time I saw them. Very folky/bluesy, in my opinion. It's not high energy, by any means, but (not to sound like a broken record or anything) Mira's voice is enough to send chills down your spine. I've already got my $$$ to pick up their EP this time around.
Don't know anything about Magic Marker, though.
-
If anyone's got word on an extra ticket, I'm all ears.
-
well. i was GOING to go, but again, if thirsty aint goin, i aint goin.
that said, i "might" go tonight.
-
I'll be there.
-
Just swing on by. You'll get a ticket, I'm sure. Besides, it's not like you can't just hop on your INSERT NAME OF IMPRESSIVE NEW BIKE HERE and make it to the club in no time. No pain, no gain.

I'm losing dignity by the minute. I just told someone I'd marry their russian girlfriend to keep her in the country for a ticket.

If you're serious about that offer, I know someone who would take you up on it, but I doubt they have any extra Sonic Youth tickets.
-
I'll be there...I think this is about the 9th time I've seen Sonic Youth.
-
does jim o'rourke tour with them too? (this will be my 1st time seeing them since '95)

Yes.

Yep...he's an honest-to-goodness full time member of SY nowadays. Since NY Ghosts & Flowers, if I'm correct (or at least toured with them since that time).

Looks like I just scored myself a ticket sans Russian mail order bride. Sorry Petra, maybe next time.

That's too bad, I'm sure Petra could have scored you some great seats at the next Gorky Park concert.

I believe that to be a totally fictional event.

I shall be there also. :D

Anyone know what they've been playing on this tour? Of course mostly the new record, and I think a few tunes from Murray Street...I've also heard that "Sugar Kane" has been popping up. But if anyone knows if there will be some other surprises, I'd be curious to know. Thanks!

Actually, the band as of 2000 were still playing gigs, albeit with a hodge podge line-up. Those bumbs Metalica pulled out of a co-headlining Red Square gig in May of 1999 though, may have taken the wind out of Gorky's sails.

if someone has an extra free ticket, will pack for me and get me drunk and drive me home, i'm totally there

Teenage Riot, Kool Thing, and Bull in the Heather were played a bunch out west last month.
-
I personally would love to hear the Empty Page, Mote, Schizophrenia, and Bull in the Heather. Decent setlists, pretty standard for Sonic Youth. A bunch of new songs with some older ones thrown in.
-
i definitely want to hear some new stuff. Pattern Recognition is my fav. from the new disc.
Teenage Riot and Drunken Butterfly are favourites. I still havent heard them play 100% yet.
also i would like to hear:
Wildflower Soul
Silver Rocket
Androgynous Mind
My Friend Goo
those would make me happy please. :)
-
I had planned on going but now can't. Luckily, I am going to shows tomorrow and Friday to make up for it.
If anyone wants to buy my ticket, send me a PM.

none of these songs will be played. judging from the setlists so far this year, they are typical and a bit too predictable for me (though this is because i've seen SY about 15 times). they'll play about six new songs, two from murray street, and a handful of popular older ones like "100%", "bull in the heather", and "schizophrenia". there's usually one or two surprises thrown in.
i will be there, and NOT working. i never miss a sonic youth show, unless it's $40 and at DAR.
for those of you curious about the magik markers, they epitomize amateur no-wave. i saw them last year with subarachnoid space in baltimore, and they were almost unbearably lacking in playing skills. that's saying a lot coming from me, as i listen to some of the most abrasive, atonal shit out there. the markers have a lot of heart, though, and they're fun to watch, but don't expect to hear "songs". it's mostly a whole lot of shrieking and flailing away. i doubt i'll be able to get there on time to see the audience boo them.

i'll be there, probably be late
song wishlist:
dude ranch nurse (I assume this will be played)
swimsuit issue
wish fulfillment
-
I still can't decide if it was a great show or merely a good one. It seems like whenever I see Sonic Youth I get something a little different each time. Here was the setlist:
I Love You Golden Blue
Stones
Pattern Recognition (excellent)
Unmade Bed
Eric's Trip
Mariah Carey
Burning Spear
New Hampshire
Paper Cup Exit
Schizophrenia
Dude Ranch Nurse
Drunken Butterfly
------------------
Rain on Tin
Pacific Coast Highway
------------------
set list says Make the Nature Scene, but I thought that Expressway to Yr Skull.
All in all, it was good to see them again, seemed like the band was having a pretty good time and were in good spirits. Nothing will ever compare to the time I saw them in early July 2002 though.
-
I thoroughly enjoyed the show. I thought the lights behind the stage were way cool, and Thurston still acts like he's 25.
The song choice was the only so so part. Pattern Recognition and Sister were highlights, and the first encore song was incredible, minus the Kim Gordon trumpet.
I did manage to come to one large Sonic conclusion last night. I like the songs that Lee sings the best.
-

I thought Paper Cup Exit was great last night, it had not been one of my favorites on the album before the show.
I enjoyed the show as well, not the best I have seen them but not the worst.
-
Great show. Final encore was Expressway as bunny said.
Anyone know exactly what those video monitors were? Pretty cool.
Yeah, SY was acting pretty youthful last night. The results were good. Although Jim R. seemed pretty subdued compared to the rest of the band, almost like a hired hand.
Pattern Recognition: Wow!
-
Sailor Ripley -- You're spot on about Jim O'Rourke. He looked really bored last night, embarassed even.
The video screens behind them were VERY cool. I haven't picked up their new album yet, shameful --I know, but the new stuff was great. I'm always up for Expressway and I've never heard PCH live before.
-
I musta been standing in the wrong spot cause I was having a hard time with the vocals. I thought they were being drowned out badly by the instruments. But even after that, I did enjoy listening to them. They have such a unique sound to them. I did however leave after an hour, it just wasn't my night, I was waaaaay too tired and didnt feel like standing anymore. Sonick, we missed you on the left side. What happened?

i didnt get in until 930 and we dropped by there, didnt see you, then went to backbar, and by the time we came back upstairs it was packed like whoa. so we went balcony style.
i so sorry ! :)
-
I was a bit tired and cranky myself last night. I was tempted to leave after an hour or so, but every time I was ready to go they'd drop into some mesmerizing noise-fest and I couldn't pull myself away. Good show. I need to pay more attention to them in the future.
I think I saw Rob and possibly chimbly (were you there?), but like I said, I was pretty cranky and just kept to myself most of the night. Had I seen sonick I would have yelled disparaging things about Muse, just to watch him get all riled-up. :D
-
I was more than happy with the set. Hearing the new songs live really cemented the album as a great one, especially Pattern Recognition. And man, the old songs were smoking. Thanks to Thirsty to pointed out that it was Burning Spear and Expressway to me; my noise-damaged ears couldn't place them right off the bat. And even though they played Eric's Trip and Drunken Butterfly pretty recently, I just can't get enough of those songs. BTW, Schizophrenia = AWESOME.
So any thoughts on the openers? Loved White Magic, and I'll be damned if the Magic Markers weren't great just for giving it their all. Like the girl said, you don't need chords to rock, just a lot of heart.

I was near the left bar area facing the stage with my Anthrax shirt on. I thought I saw Skeeter there but I could be mistaken. Other than that, didnt really see any familiar faces. Not that alot of faces are familiar to me.

i did see you
outside, as you were going in , but i was walking up and i didnt want to yell. would you have answered to a resounding "SKEEEEETERRRR"?
-
Ok, I must be lost with the names again, does Skeeter = Bombay Chutney? If so, then we were standing right next to each other at the bar ten mintues before SY came on.
-
White Magic were good from the start. I wasn't into Magic Markers until their last song. Specifically when they yelled, "They're going to tell you you're not Rush. Well fuck Rush! Rush sucks!".
Anyone know Sonic Youth's secret? Why are they so damned good?

I was waaaay in the back left next to the video/audio stuff(didn't get there till like 9:45) but it was fine for sound.
Those video boxes weren't video-- they were just light boxes with changeable gels in front-- that is, plastic color sheets all attached on a roller that would just scroll through. Not the world's most expensive technology, but really looked great.
I was a little bored. I think artistically it was a great show, but the feedback thing got a little old at the end.

Yeah - That's me. I changed my name about a week ago. I guess I was pre-occupied getting my beer. Didn't notice you were right next to me at the bar. Sorry about that.

The feedback did tend to drag on at the end of Expressway.

Yeah...it was interesting to see them doing the feedback thing, but I felt like after a certain point it just lost me a bit. I would have liked a few more of their "hits"...maybe "Bull in the Heather" and something like "Kool Thing". But hey, Sonic Youth has never been that type of band and in a way that's what I love about them. That's why they're still around. It's amazing to see how much they rock out during "Pattern Recognition". And Kim Gordon looked incredible. :)

On my walk home I had the pleasure of running into the guy that screams about how nobody likes him because he's white.

More like Darius Rucker.

that guy is a real treat, was hoping I would not run in to him last night, and luckily did not, he also likes to tell people these days how he has been banned from being on most of the streets around that area, doesnt stop him from being there

yes she did.
those changing-color boxes onstage were a nice touch. i especially liked when they glowed bright orange, coupled together w/ the blue curtain backdrop.
and thank you, 930 music person, for playing "hold on" as the filing out music.
-
as usual, i thought sonic youth were incredible. it was the first time i'd ever seen both "burning spear" and "PCH", and they did not disappoint. "eric's trip" was ferocious, and "schizophrenia" remains one of the most beautiful songs they've ever written.
of the new songs, they played my two favorites first: "i love you golden blue" and "stones". "pattern recognition" was intense and as vital as anything in SY's past.
i know i'm a freak, but i could listen to feedback all day. some of my favorite parts of their sets are when they go on those long feedback tangents. i wish they'd bring back "diamond sea".
sonic youth, in my opinion, once again solidified their hold as one of the great psych bands of the last two decades. they never disappoint me.
jim o'rourke did look kinda bored, though.
white magic blew me away...they've improved significantly from last year. i almost lost my shit when they covered the great society's "grimly forming." mira's vocals are haunting, and the guitarist pulled off some sick psych riffing. i got there right after the majik markers left the stage, so i missed whatever noise they brought.
-
yeah, Kim Gordon = transperent dress, visible thong, still a goddess.
Great show though. Expressway to Yr Skull was definitely one of the encores. I thought it was spectacular when Thurstone has his guitar on top of the stacks and then stood on top of it. The final ten minutes of feedback were well done I thought.

Sonic Youth, in the Raw
Friday, August 13, 2004; Page C04
Customarily, rock bands wait until the climax of their performance before they start battering the guitars and summoning feedback from the amps. For Sonic Youth, however, raw electric noise is essence rather than embellishment. Wednesday night at the 9:30 club, the New York-based quintet opened with drones and squeals, setting the raucous tone for its nearly two-hour set.
The band drew heavily on its latest album, "Sonic Nurse," but many of the songs were altered beyond recognition. The vocals were buried in the mix, although bassist Kim Gordon's raspy soprano sometimes penetrated the din, especially during the insistent "Kim Gordon and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream." While such numbers as "Pattern Recognition" and "Paper Cup Exit" began with identifiable riffs, they soon moved into unpredictable territory.
Guitarists Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo and Jim O'Rourke played lyrical exchanges and interlocking modal vamps, but they also banged their instruments on the stage and attacked them with drumsticks. During some arrhythmic passages, the guitars sounded like prepared pianos, more John Cage than Les Paul.
Over the course of its 22-year recording career, Sonic Youth has recorded punky rockers and pensive ballads. The latter have dominated the group's recent albums, and were well represented when it performed at the 9:30 club two Augusts ago. Any thought that the band has abandoned sheer clamor, however, was dispelled Wednesday. The show may have overemphasized a single aspect of the band's style, but it did so exuberantly.
