A borf sighting...my day is complete. Thanks. I'm up for a forum frolic on Fri. night...and maybe a quick walk - or slow crawl - over to VL for the Pharmacists too.
-
is this The Pharmacists as in "Ted Leo and The...?"
and don't mention it, I live to complete others' days. ;)
-
Sorry, I meant the Pharmacy Prophets...maybe we can tag a little on our way over. ;)
-
I'm planning to attend the Caligari/Phaser/Radio 4 show. :)
-
Who IS this Borf, anyway?
I've been wondering this for a while ...
Cheers
DJ Medusa.
-
According to one story, he is this kid from suburban New Jersey who faked his suicide to escape from an unhappy family life, and has since travelled up and down the East Coast leaving his tag as a way of showing that he is still alive.

I'm going to get smacked for this one, but if I was a kid from suburban New Jersey ... well *no wonder*! :p
Go Borf!
Cheers
DJ Medusa.

I'm more of a watcher than a doer. ;)
I've been meaning to see the Pharmacy Prophets for a while... they are heirs to long-lost DC band the Crippled Pilgrims (http://www.30underdc.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-17).

I hear you're handy with a camera too...!
The lead guitarist for Pharmacy Prophets is channeling Stevie Ray Vaughn on a few songs...like their vocals/harmonies too!
-
Well if their lead guitarist is who I think it is, I used to worship him when I was a scrawny 15-year old geek just learning to play guitar :)

That is ONE awesome photo...it's beautiful even on my crappy little G4 screen...is it DC?
-

You live at 17th & P? Nice. Really nice.
interesting story... my friend lived in the group house at 1702 17th St. It was right there on the corner, across from CVS. The house is gorgeous, and the rent was like $400 for each of 4 roommates. Then, one day, a guy shows up at the door saying the house is for sale. He offers each roommate $5000 to shut up, sign away their right of first refusal, and move out. The housemates obviously didn't have a down payment for a $2M house, so they took the money. Quite the windfall, but now it's condos... so sad.

I'll be there, (of course I have to be there but...). It's going to be fun. Kung Fury with Chaz on guest vocals will be stellar.
Suki/Sayonoro, look forward to chit chatting with you again.
-
wish i could be there, but I'm off to LA to see The Sugarplatic, a band I haven't seen for Nine years
-
Perhaps there will even be a "Mr. White" sighting...a whirling, rockin', dancin' dood if ever there was one. Unfortunately, the VL dance floor is a little small.

Heh... that house your friend lived in used to have awesome parties. :p I would always go to them, although I never met the actual residents....

Sayonoro, I saw White's soulmate at the Galaxy Hut the other night. Painful. His name was Lord of the Yum Yum. I wanted to light him on fire.

Their right of first refusal to what? Buy it? I'd say getting $5K, considering they couldn't buy it anyway, was quite a sweet deal.
I looked at those places -- tiny (I'd say less than 700 sq ft), and at prices ranging from $400K - $500K (though they're all the same size -- one floor), no parking. Great location, though.

We'll have a "white-yum-yum" watch out for Fri. night. They both probably went to the Elaine Bennis school of dance. Estimates for times on Friday night?
-
so back to the subject at hand, I hope to see some of you peeps on Thur and/or Fri :)
-
I'm there: BC and VL... :)

Nice. If you can get there for Kung Fury playing first. Rumor has it that Chaz will be singing some songs with them. I love that band a lot.
Kung Fury - 9:45-10:45
Prophets - 11:00 -12:00
Sovus Radio - 12:15 - 1:15
-
Speaking of which, where is Chaz?
-
Pharmacist, glad to know you're starting relatively late, my insane two-club-in-one-night plan may actually work out and let me see all the bands I want to see! :)
So nobody's going to Phaser/Caligari tonight? :(
-

If he doesn't show, I'll sing. That's a BIG reason for Chaz to post...See you there!
-
Caligari put on a good show tonight :)
-
Review, please.

RC gave me a tape several years ago that has never left the cassette deck in my car.
She's a good one.

You don't have to start applauding yet. We don't play for about 13 more hours. Your proactive adulation is duly noted however and will be annotoated in your record.

You too, you creepy old man. :p Did you even finish your beer??
-
Me? I don't drink beer!
Oh wait...yes I do.
Move along nothing to see here.
-
heh... Pharmacist, I believe with that beer comment she was referring to *this* old man. Although I suppose to her all old men are the same. ;)
-
aahh, a satisying night of good music (Federal City Five, Aqueduct, Metropolitan), good friends, and a garlic-doused pizza slice to top it all off at the end... who can ask for anything more?
Well, I could. I could ask to have seen Pharmacy Prophets as well, but timing and a rain-soaked walk to velvet just did not allow it. Pharmacist, nice to meet you, sorry I missed the show.
time to go sleep off this buzz, gotta kill this habit of posting whilst under the influence....
-
Appreciate you stopping by. We had fun, lots of strange happenings at the show. Next time next time.
-
what sort of strange happenings?
I enjoyed that band that followed you guys.
-
Well....
The roof was leaking onto the drumset so our drummer was a tad concerned about being electrocuted the whole time we were playing.
some nitwit tried to steal my guitarist's Les Paul by just picking it up and walking out of the club. He was caught and we recovered the guitar.
A drunk woman grabbed my private parts and then said, "oh my god I'm so embarassed I thought you were my boyfriend." That was kooky.
I randomly ran into a guy that I had not seen since he sucker punched me in the face about ten years ago. We had some beers, all was well.
I saw Chaz, that's always kookily fascinating.
Entertaining evening overall.
-
all of that sounds like a typical night at the old Asylum on 9th St...

All I needed was Joyce yelling at people who couldn't make up their minds about drinks and it would have been spot on.
I loved Joyce.
-
yes!!!
whatever happened to her? (I'm afraid to ask.)

Hey Pharmacist and Confessions: Sorry I missed the (soggy) "music crawl" last Friday. I came down with a documented case of influenza B, and it took me down really fast . Man, I was really sick for a few days - but I'm coming back - almost ready for a little beer and some good ole rock. BTW: I don't blame Joyce for yelling about people who stand in line then have no idea what to order when their turn comes...hopefully, she's retired and only hanging out with people who are decisive and predictable... ;) Hope to catch the Pharmacy Prophets at their next gig!

Last I talked to her about 6 months ago Joyce was fine, out of the bar business for good but writing songs solo acoustic and thinking about venturing out for an open mic night somewhere in the wilds of Virginia where she lives.
-
Well that's cool about Joyce. I said I was afraid to ask because (if I remember correctly) she had a bout with cancer sometime in the early 90s, but I'm glad to know she's OK. And if I'm not remembering correctly, forget I said anything.
One thing beyond dispute: Murder Ink used to rock!!!
BadSushi: thanks to you, I almost went up and talked to several tall blonde women. But I held back, fearing that saying "are you BadSushi?" might not be received well.
Finally, since this is my thread:

Yeah, you erred on the side of caution, and probably saved yourself a severe beating...I'm going back to Suki, anyway. I am so lost now about who's who here. Of course, walking up to a guy and asking "Are you Confessons of an English Opium Eater" might be construed as rather strange too...but probably wouldn't get me a fist in the face.
That's an incredible photo - as usual. Did you use a tripod?
-
who knows, it might have gotten you on the inside track of DC's elusive post fin-de-siecle underground opium scene....
I did use a tripod!

Hey Doom, I'd be really interested in some photos of my neighborhood -- Woodley Park and the bridges that lead to it.....
-
Bags, I was actually planning to get up there this evening, but things went awry...

I'm in the wilds of virginia.....where the Southside Locos and MS-13 stalk the night.
Idiots.
Anyway if we were doing an oldtimers reunion I would have to include Joyce, Strange Fred, Cat from the old 9:30, (who I have not seen in many years but I think still works for the club), and the survivng members of Thud, Lucy Brown and Party Akimbo.
Speaking of Party Akimbo their singer Rob has a new band called Crashlander that completely and awesomely kicks ass. I think they have a DC9 show coming up.
Nice pix....
Suki I'm glad to hear that you're on the mend.
That would rock.
-
heh... for some reason I was just thinking about Party Akimbo. They had one song in particular that really rocked, some sort of song about not judging people. Can't remember the name.
