My wife's away for the weekend...wanna hang out? ;)

Fruit Bats at Iota, but I meant to ask on the board if anyone knew if I should stick around for the headliner.
They are opening for Steve Wynn, who I guess started Dream Syndicate in the 80s, any opinions?

I'll hang out with anyone who buys me expensive birthday gifts.
who the hell are the fruit bats? sounds fairy

Chicago's experimental folk-pop combo the Fruit Bats feature an ever-changing lineup based around singer/songwriter/guitarist/keyboardist Eric Johnson (not to be confused with the Eric Johnson from Archers of Loaf or the guitar virtuoso of the same name) and keyboardist/bassist/mandolin player Gillian Lisee. Johnson began playing and writing songs on his four-track in the mid-'90s before he formed I Rowboat, a Velvet Underground-inspired indie rock band. Johnson began dabbling in folk with I Rowboat guitarist Dan Strack and drummer Brian Belval as the Fruit Bats. When I Rowboat disbanded, Johnson played guitar and banjo with Califone. That group's Tim Rutili and Ben Massarella, who also own Perishable Records, urged the Fruit Bats to record their work for the label, which resulted in the trio's 2001 debut, Echolocation. Over the next two years the group toured and refined its lineup and sound, adding Lisee as well as more pop and experimental elements to its folk-rock base. In 2002 the group signed to Sub Pop, who released their sophomore effort, Mouthfuls, in spring 2003.

Yeah. He owns the Bellagio and he's got a kick-ass art collection.

One friend who has seen Steve Wynn several times says he is brilliant live. Baltimore City Paper gives a thumbs up to the show. I probably will go to the show in b-more friday.

maybe I will hang around to hear them then, anybody have a suggestion of what time to show up at Iota for a Saturday night show, or is it normally not a problem getting in?

Dream Syndicate's Days of Wine and roses is IMHO,one of the best VU influenced releases ever.I also heard on a recent tour,he played the whole thing in it's entirety.I don't think you'll be disapointed.
-
Depends on the artist of course. But a lot of yuppie types show up just for a place to hang out on a Saturday night. If I were going, I'd get there a half hour before the opener.
While you're there, ask Steve the owner if Pernice Brothers are coming back in Sept. Maybe they'd have it posted on the board in the back. Likely it would have to be sometime between Sept 15-17.

Will you lot stop singing the praises of this Wynn character, I'm trying to score with Samantha for the weekend.
It's just Stevie Winwood, without the wood..must be his age. (Speaking of which, I can get the good old blue pill from a mate of mine so not a problem for me in that area ;) )
-
Thank god there's guys like Mankie around to make me look good by comparison in my wife's eyes. :)

My buddy Ed Neenan is warming up that night and The Mojo is my second favorite place to see a show these days. So I'm considering it as well, might even eat another one of their yummy burritos again.

Is this in addition to the Ottobar show on Sept 18th?
Another cool Ottobar show just announced.
Tommy Stinson & The Figgs, The Figgs, Jake Brennan & The Set-up
Doors at 8pm/ Show at 8:30pm- ALL AGES

Yes, wondering if they are playing DC in addition to Baltimore. They are playing in Florida on the 14th, Baltimore the 18th, and in Vermont on the 20th. Iota and Black CAt are both booked on the 19th, so presumably if they were playing down here it would have to be between 15-17. Most likely the 16th or 17th. Possible other I-95 stops might be Atlanta or Athens, and Chapel Hill or Raleigh.

Just come to 9:30 tomorrow night... Hazel always puts on an awesome live show.

I used to substitute teach members of the Figgs back in the early 90's.

you should go to the live on penn show on saturday. only three bucks. the highlights for me are de la soul and robert randolph. randolph at 9:30 club last december was probably the most fun show i've ever been to. highly recommended!
-
the walkmen are playing the black cat tomorrow night. i also think that is the night of Queercore, a new fun(?) dance night at the black cat. also, minus the bear are playing on sunday at the 'cat, and they're great. i haven't seen them live but i'm curious as to how they'll be.
and happy birthday!

I supposed we need another flirting with indie, yet still bland enough to be mainstream rock band for you?
-
There have been tons of great bands from Chicago. Wilco and Robbie Fulks are two of my absolute favorites. I'm sure we could start another thread listing dozens of great Chicago artists. Cripes, half of the Bloodshot roster is based in Chicago, and they're the best label going, in my opinion.

As much as they make Chicago seem like home, I still consider Wilco as from Belleville, IL

you could go see The Liberation at Firehouse Grill in Fairfax, VA tonight with the Lime Twiggs. The Liberation are apparently, I've never seen them, a local Acoustic Punk-Ska band.

If you have never seen Chuck Brown you need to go to that show. Truly.
It's like Bill Murray says of Tito Puente in Stripes -- Y'know, one day Chuck Brown is going to be dead and you'll want to tell all your friends 'I loved Chuck Brown. I've been listening to him for years.'
-
That's a fact, Jack.

SHIT! I better clean up a bit then.
Tomorrow night 8pm, my gaff.. I'll supply the booze, BYOCD and no drugs.

Go for the GoGo at the 9:30 saturday. Chuck Brown like the other famous Brown in music is great. Should be a hopping show.

Seriously though Rhett and Celeste, I want to live the life of a real urbanite hipster on Saturday....where do you two go on Saturday nights. Let me feel what it's like to be a big city slicker...

Well we had thoughts of going to Old Dominion Speewday for some racing. As it is, we're thinking now we may turn in around 10 so we can get up early and go to Old Rag for some hiking Sunday.

Did that hike and there was a little black bear hanging out by the trail. Looked like a big dog but walked like a bear. When I first mentioned it to the people I was hiking with, they laughed thinking I was joking.

I thought you metropolitans would be turning the fire hydrant on outside your condo to run through the water to stay cool while the neighborhood kids play double-dutch in the street, then in the evening go to some nouvo restaurant to eat something most of us have never heard of, catch an unkown indie band in a hipster bar before finishing the night off with a $10 coffee in a coffee shop known only to the locals, stop by the 24 hour bookstore before flagging a yellow cab down back home.

No. In true American fashion, those who live in the city get out of the city in their spare time, while those that live outside the city go into it.
-
I thought that happened in NYC, you know, the city you want to live in.

From Rhett and Celeste's comments on other topics I just assumed it was their lifestyle.
I would love to live in New York, but only if I was filthy rich.
-
If I won't pay $25 for a concert t-shirt, I sure as fuck aint gonna pay $10 for a coffee. Hell, I've never even had a cup of coffee in my whole life.
And we go see nationally known alt-country bands, usually in the burbs, not unknown indie bands.
And with a baby on the way in a few years, it would be sort of foolish to buy a condo.
I think you're projecting, Mr. Mank.

Oh, Samantha. Sorry to hear about that. Sort of thought that's what was wrong. That's a very, very tough bind to be in. And don't any of ya'll get all moralistic on her. This is her own call no matter what any of us think.
BTW, as much as I love them, the younger guys can sometimes be even worse. It's really an individual thing, just like with women. It's just that they are lucky enough to never, ever get 100% stuck in a bind like that. The good ones will at least either stick with you or do whatever they can to help you out, and they can be of any age.
We've said it before but you need to hear/read it again, you DO have friends here. ;)

Try venues other than those in Cleveland Park or the Bethesda Holiday Inn. Both 9:30 Club and Iota have cool shows going on from what I see.

I have checked everywhere...and hardly ever go to Bethesda unless it's for Indian food actually. Even if I hadn't checked all the venues, the fact that you said they're cool is confirmation they're total feces.

Even Baltimore sucks tonight Mank, or I'd try to woo you up here. Well, it sucks up here a lot anyway. The worst is the Recher Theatre with Hanson. Almost can't believe that kid crap is sold out! Just goes to show that there are still a lot of teeny boppers around who are getting out to shows.

And here I had tought that she was cooler than that. Oh, well. She's still very young and can be forgiven. It's sold out anyway, so no luck for her on that front. Of course, there's always the 9:30 Board Ticket Exchange section. :D

No, she's cool enough, and laughs at herself for still liking them actually. They were the first band she got into though so I think it's more sentimental than anything else. Well that and she's 14 and thinks the middle Hanson kid is hot!!!!

Well I did not end up staying for Steve Wynn, but the Fruit Bats were great despite a short set and not having the full band along for this tour. Took me long enough to finally go to Iota, but I was really impressed and may be going back October 6th for Richard Buckner.
Sorry Rhett, did not get any info about Pernice Brothers and didnt see any posters for them up indicating that they would be coming back soon.

Did you hear Celeste yell "Hi Jadetree" as we passed you as we were driving down Wilson Blvd?
Thanks for checking about PB. It's possible they still may be added to the Iota schedule. Iota tens to book acts closer to the actual date since they don't bother with selling advance tickets.
