I'm sure it was an innocent oversight but you forgot to mention Kelly Osbourne is playing 3/31.  Why would the blackcat book her?  Oh, and opening is Har Mar Superstar.

Fort Reno is fun, it's a good place to chill in the summer, good sunsets. Many a good summer evenings have started out at Fort Reno. The acoustics do suck and Ian McKaye might be pretentious and PETA may try to boycott the ice cream truck. All in all it's a good establishment, glad to live near it, see it every day. I was wearing a Ft. Reno shirt the first time I kissed a girl. alright. sure beats black cat and their drawn on sideburns and thick rimmed glasses, slow service for vegan food.

I've been impressed the times I've seen Q and Not U. I fell for Black Eyes when I saw them play after Aereogramme last summer at that Studio show. (Though I don't think I can match the devotion of formerly-happy-couple Paige and Walkman...) I think they were playing Black Eyes songs Friday night between the Tone and Oxes sets.

The singer from Black Eyes, if that is who youâ??re talking about is quite the scrawny bastard. At Ft. Reno that boy couldnâ??t fill his Dickies, and Dickieâ??s are already quite the ass-less pair of pants.

Just announced (or at least new to me):

 June 21 - Black Eyes

June 27 - Jets to Brazil

July 6 - Sorry About Dresden

July 10 - The Fall (yow!)

They put others up as well, but these are the ones that jumped out at me.

Extremely boring is a bit harsh. I think plain boring would be fairer.

Found this about The Statistics as well, they are on some label called jade tree -

Omaha, Nebraska's all-star Statistics is the new band from Desaparecidos founder, main songwriter and guitarist Denver Dalley. Complementing, yet expanding upon Denver's efforts with the Saddle Creek powerhouse he fronted with Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), Statistics is percolating, hushed electro-pop melded with power-rock dynamics and pure, timeless hooks.

Black Cat's having some mad noise this summer.

  - Black Eyes
  - Melt Bananna
  - The Locust
  - The Ruins

OH man, those will be some sweet shows, not too much some good dancefloor action at the Pietasters/Shakedowns show.

- Black Eyes - DC No-wave, lots of drums, white boy go-go screamo, with Dischord production qualities

 - Melt Bananna - Japanese Art-punk, no-wave, Japa-Noise

 - The Locust - San Diego sci-fi grind/screamo with an organ & costumes. Trendy bastards with tight pants and belt buckles, youth size t-shirts.

 - The Ruins - Japanese brutal prog, originators of no-wave.

The first two come highly recommended by yours truly, while the other two come highly recommended by my arty, chain-smoking, all-black wearing, piercing-ful friend.  So there you go.

P.S.  You can sorta dance to Black Eyes.

No offense to anyone or to Black Eyes. I know you guys really like them and are, in some cases, even friends with the band....but all I can do is RUN from Black Eyes!

Unless The Ruins were from the late 70's, they are nowhere near being the originators of no-wave.  You can check out a compilation called "No New York" with bands such as Teenage Jesus and The Jerks, Mars, DNA, James Chance and the Contortions, etc.  As much as I'm glad that this music is making a comeback, it isn't all that original.

To be fair, The Ruins have been around for almost 20 years...although seeing as Arto Lindsay just turned 50, they're still a bunch of kids in comparison.

Oh yeah, and that compilation is really good.

speaking of no new wave from nyc... checkout Downtown 81 which is currently showing on Sundance.  it's basically Jean-Michel Basquiat wandering around nyc interacting with various scenesters and includes performances by DNA, Tuxedomoon, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, James Black, and The Plastics.

i only caught part of it, but it's interesting little film that was only just finished in 2000. Hence the website.

I've never been to the Black Cat before but was thinking about heading there this Thursday for the Fall show.

I was wondering what time their shows usually end on weekdays, plus if they've got a parking lot nearby (like the 9:30's).

 Thankssssssss
Title: Re: Black Cat Shows
Post by: Bags on July 07, 2003, 01:55:00 pm
No parking as in a parking lot, and their shows tend to run later than the 9:30s.  They don't seem to care if you make the metro or not (though is that still an issue with the expanded hours?).

Typically, if there's one opening band, they'll go on around 9, with the headliner at 10.  But if there are two openers, the headliner can go on as late as 10:30, 11:00.
Title: Re: Black Cat Shows
Post by: plateauxofmirror on July 07, 2003, 01:57:00 pm
The problem with taking the Metro is that it doesn't really run that late and I've heard horror stories of (suburbanite) friendlies getting stuck in Generic Bad Neighborhood in NW and being scared out of their minds.

Is it generally that hard finding parking around the place?

its normally really easy to park around the blackcat. If you are more than a block and a half away you will be unlucky. And it is fine now around that area.

I highly recommend the fall show.

Yeah, I have a super secret place where I always park before black cat shows, but suffice to say, just go around the neighborhood behind the club and you will find a spot.

That sucks man, I'm sorry to hear that.  DC is a big city and it happens all over.  Smackette and I were recently robbed at gun point in Cleveland Park of all places, so it can happen anywhere.

But don't let that ruin your fun.  I find these to be isolated incidents and sometimes just bad luck.  I go to both the Black Cat and the 9:30 often, and have never been bothered.  Instead, just walking home from the local watering hole in my neighborhood I got robbed, so pay attention to your surroundings and be alert, and if accosted, give them the cash - it's not worth bodily harm.

Cheers.  Thankfully, No one was hurt, so you just move on.  It's just a little disturbing to the psyche, that's all.

As for moving - I chose San Francisco instead - just avoid the Tenderloin I'm told.

Isnt all the porn in the tenderloin?

We stayed at a cool resort hotel there one time, the phoenix, it was a bit dodgy around the hotel, but the hotel itself was hipster heaven. Probably the coolest place I have ever stayed.

I didnt mean my last response to be so flippant. If that happened to me I doubt I would want to leave the house for a month. I guess the good thing is that in both cases no one was hurt.

You flippant?  Never.  I didn't take it that way anyway.

I too stopped going out a bit afterwards which is why you didn't see me at too many shows in March/April.  But we've moved on and are out and about and only terrified for that last few yards before our Condo - which sucks!  I should be at The Fall on Thursday.

you too smackie? bugger. ex and i were walking from friend's party last december down towards u street and got robbed at 16th and a couple blocks up from u by 4 men at gunpoint. get this--across the street from a big apartment building and under a street lamp. my friend's house just got broken into on capitol hill. they ripped the bars off the basement window, then ripped out the entire security system control pad on a monday around 12 noon. it can happen anywhere and at any time.  like smackie said, stay alert and trust your gut instinct.

Not to downplay *any* of the incidents discussed on the board, but I've been in DC 13.5 years and nothing has ever happened to me (yes, I realize I've just doomed myself to a mugging in the near future).  And I go to all the places discussed here often.  It's a crapshoot; I'm no more careful or aware then they -- but, as you see, even the folks who've been mugged are still here to tell the tale.  Key is to hand over your stuff, and be obvious about not looking at them enough to i.d. them.

Damn, that sounded scary.  DC isn't scary!!!
