Some doodle on the news here said Katrina is America's Tsunami.......is the death toll really up around a quarter of a million!!!!! Holy feck'n jayzus.
-
I believe it was the mayor of Biloxi, MS, which took a direct hit. He was referring to his town, not America as a whole.
-
I wasn't aware Biloxi even had 250,000 residents to perish.
-
I don't believe the death toll has even approached a few hundred, much less a quarter million.
-
I wasn't aware Biloxi even had 250,000 residents to perish.
It didn't. However, it's a matter of scale, which would require some critical reasoning skills to understand, so I won't waste my time trying to explain it to you.
Don't worry, you can still comfort yourself with the idea that several dozen Americans are dead.
-
news flash: someone disagrees with something one person in america said! live footage at 11
-
Someone's a little touchy....could say they have the Biloxi Blues!!!

Thanks to the proper use of technology.
However, I think you will see damage in total dollars reach a pretty high level.

The exact quote was "This is America's tsunami", and it was from a doodle correspondent.
I just found it stupid, over-stated and very self centred....but could we really expect anything else going by the country of origin.
-
I'm wondering if this act of celebration.........

will be banned at N.O. Saints games in the future??
-
so you're complaining about something that a reporter said on irish tv?

Well, we're so sorry our little disaster doesn't measure up to your standards, sir. I'm afraid we doodles just can't compete with them Asians on hardly anything any more. This is the best we've been able to do in the last nine months. We'll try to get to work on something more, uh, disastrous to make it up to you. :p

Okay, I will fuck off, and thank you for proving my point about you lot though....if we don't happen to agree with you, want to kiss your collective arses or bow to your self proclaimed superiority then we can either a) fuck off, or b) get bombed to oblivion....with 'b' being the doodles preferred option.

Whatever you potato eating twat. I don't identify with much of the way things in the u.s. are headed or condone most american foreign policy. But your smug comments about 'doodles' smack of the same sense of superiority you're railing against. Think about it.

Who the shit cares what some Irish bastard has to say? Next thing you know, we'll be listening to the opinions of Negros or Jews. Then the women will want their say too!
-
This is gonna be really interesting - nationally and globally. So far, some 36-hours later, no one has delivered emergency supplies to New Orleans...no water, food, emergency shelters...no Naval ships have been deployed, no emergency Hospital Ships; no National Guard (guess where they are). No helicopters dropping water and first air supplies, etc, as you saw immediately after the Tsunami.
This is very clearly the end of the "Bush" dynasty if something doesn't happen fast. He cut his vacation short and came back to DC for meetings...WTF. There really is NO time for meetings, plans, etc. This is a natural disaster - but where are all the mobilization plans supposedly devised (at HUGE expense) for major terrorist attacks?
So far, it's been the Red Cross, private enterprises/churches or local municipal search and rescue teams... It might be a small blessing that those awaiting help don't have tv's or radios to see how little is happening. ..not to mention that NO OTHER COUNTRIES WILL GIVE A SHIT except to have their embassies send a condolence book...big lessons here on the back of the devastated and dead.

You see, faith-based initiatives really DO work. He's mobilized the prayer team (http://www.pptkids.org/) and cancelled all vacations.

I'm not a big fan of Mankie's "doodle bashing" but the first thing I thought when I read that quote in the paper was that the mayor of Biloxi is an idiot. You can't compare the two. So that I agree with him on.
Secondly, I'm suprised Al Queda or however you spell them, hasn't claimed responsibility for the hurricane attack as a sign from God for killing their people.....LOL

It was actually on the radio and I heard the quote from the correspondent myself....he was on again this morning but I still failed to get his name. I'll try to get it tomorrow as I'm sure there'll be another update from him.
As for Chaz and GGW...this hurricane/tsunami just proves that thanks to hee haw and his band of right wing chicken hawks, even God hates doodles now!!! (Note to self, return my doodle passport asap)

Yes, because Al Queda has a long history of taking repsonsibility for things they didn't personally do. This is in stark contrast to President Bush who oversaw the US experiencing it's worst terrorist attack ever, the economy getting run into the ground, international relations being at an all-time low, and gas flying to $3/gallon, yet takes culpability for none of it. Who does he blame? Oh, yeah, Al Queda. Funny how that works.

There are plans afoot for a large tax-cut as a way to deal with the crisis.

obviously a house completely covered by water is so much better. i mean, just wait for the water to drop and voila!, house is all better. not to mention nice and clean.
btw, badsushi. . bush dynasty? someone has never heard of the 22nd amendment. tsk tsk tsk and btw, several naval ships have been deployed (usns comfort from baltimore, uss bataan from texas, for example). and maybe the reason nothing has gotten to new orleans is because new orleans is being evacuated and abandoned.

Unfortunately, Mankie, you're wrong on the facts surrounding the quote that set you off. The comparison, and the widely repeated quote, originated in the office of the mayor (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20050830/ts_nm/weather_katrina_biloxi_dc_1) of Biloxi, MS. Biloxi took a 30-foot storm surge that destroyed 90% of the city's structures--not so very different from a 50 foot wave taking out 95% of the structures in the coastal settlements of Southeast Asia. The comparison is pretty apt, from the point of view of the Mayor of Biloxi. As to its subsequent re-use by journalists, among them the one you keep mis-attributing with originating it, an argument with their sense of perspective might legitimately be advanced. But extending that to a blanket indictment of all doodles all the time regarding everything rather richly deserves the abuse you've drawn. I would argue that blindly interpreting all observations according to your preconceived notions about Americans is as grotesque a distortion of clear and humane thinking as any of the thoughtcrimes you have tried to hang on "doodles" as a whole.

My apologies,
To anyone who found my comments offensive. I was just completely taken aback by the comments "this is Americas tsunami" made by the American correspondent John Farrell on RTE2 radio, and so reacted accordingly, if maybe innapropiately for some of you. I just thought comparing hurricane Katrina to the tsunami of Dec 26th was just bizzare.
As usual, certain members of this board attacked me for my comments, and I responded with venom as is my nature...which I make no apologies for by the way, that's just me being me.
And for the record, I do not hate Americans, I have very dear friends who are Americans, and I actually hold a US passport which means I chose to be an American, unlike you natural born doodles....and on the subject of the word "doodle", it is used as a harmless nickname, just as "brit" is used for the British, and "canuck" for Canadians (still trying to figure out the canuck thing though...something to do with a canoe I've heard). It's not a put down or insult, merely a term of endearment and I use it because the standard "yank" would be offensive to Americans from the confederate states.
Anyway, this thread and the direction it took has bugged me for the last couple of days so I just wanted to get that off my chest.
I am a prick I know, but not an American hating prick. Sure some things about you lot in general bug me, and make me shake my head ruefully at you all, but even though I'm not religous I went to the local church and lit a candle for the vitims of Katrina today.
BTW....I'm not a potato eating twat, well I am, but I'm an English potato eating twat living in Ireland, which, as a side note I've bought potatoes the last couple of weeks in the local supermarket, the first lot were a product of Isreal and the second a product of Great Britain, a little ironic.......no?

Yeah, the 22nd amendment forbids the election of the encumbent President's relatives, right? So Jeb can't run as the next family member? hahahah
BTW: Those people who "evacuated" New Orleans...were mostly tourists in rental cars - leaving the poor - who coincidentally were predominantly black.
Now we have a race war underway too. Great management techniques here - lots of self-congratulatory film bites from the Administration and homeland security crowd for their prompt response to this disaster - nice suits, dudes.
We're sitting pretty in our clean homes, with food, water and air conditioning, pissing about gas and concert ticket prices, but our government has failed those poor souls. The freekin' emperor has no clothes on...
What a horrible situation. When I see the photos from the football "dome" which have now shown the same scenario day after day, I am ashamed to be an American. O'Mankie: You have a right to slam us...over this.
-
It's sad, but maybe next time they will listen to the evacuation warnings.

NOTHING is more important than concert ticket prices. nothing.
-
Originally posted by Rob_Gee:

I'm sure some of the people that didn't leave were just being stubborn, but in many cases these people had nowhere to go and no way to get there. N.O. residents are something like 80% native to the city, so it's not they all had an auntie in texas they could just drop in on....
-
This is dumb. No reasonable person would think that the comparison made between the hurricane and the tsunami literally meant that the same number of people were killed. What it meant was that both were disasters of staggering proportions. Do you interpret the Bible literally, too?
Also, blaming people for not evacuating is a an asshole thing to do, a lot like blaming rape victims for wearing short skirts. Have you noticed that a lot of the people left behind are poor and black? New Orleans is one of America's poorest cities. It costs money to leave home, it costs money to find shelter. Most of the people left don't have it.

yeah, the media narrative is already being spun in an effort to absolve the authorities and blame the victims
and do we really think if it was 30,000 middle class white people living in their own shit at the Superdome that an evacuation would take 5 days to organize? not likely....

I'm not giving away private info. when I say that Dr. Doom is WAYYYY more plugged in to what the hell is going on with disaster relief/politics right now.
I'd say, just as a point of reference, that he knows more than the average "poster" about misery, deprivation, international opinions/attitudes, and the logistics of aid-provision - and tho he might not have a million dollars to give to Katrina relief, he's emailing you from the HEART of the real Tsunami disaster...where he's been for some time.
I'd say his view of our narrow-minded, politics at ALL costs/spin-meister American life right now is right on. God speed, Dr. Doom.
-
PS: Just caught the story on NBC about a the Leesburg VA Sheriff's department deploying SIXTEEN (volunteer) deputies with a caravan loaded with water, food, gasoline, first aid supplies and emergency communications equipment. They turned around last night and came home. WHY? Because FEMA didn't provide the "OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT AUTHORIZATION" release. WTF. Hope the prez. enjoys his helicopter ride today. The bureaucrats are in control. God help us ALL!
-
I've not really posted much before, never really felt the need to bitch about the shitty show the night before or the amazing one that was just announced, but I read this board from time to time.....
Most of you probably don't know me, but many of the long-time 9:30 staff members do. Obvious clue: Chrissy +1.
I just got back from my New Orleans "vacation" yesterday. I weathered the storm a block from the French Quarter, and I've seen much of this first hand, however the situation as gotten much, MUCH worse since we were able to get out on Tuesday.
Heads are going to roll at the highest levels of the government for this mess.....I can safely say that the only reason we were able to get a ride out of town was because we are white. I know this because we were told as much. There are some serious race and class issues at work down south that have led to all this tragedy.
Despite being white, we were still EXTREMELY lucky to get a ride at all. We got out at the last possible minute. Without the guardian angels that got us out, we would probably be sitting in our hotel with no food & water, or be forced to the Superdome which was nearby. I'm not sure which option is worse.
If you have the means, PLEASE donate to the Red Cross, Salvation Army or any other organization that can help. There were a lot of people that I met throughout this ordeal that are probably still there, and they need help desperately. This is not over by any stretch of the imagination. This is an ongoing emergency, and it will take more money and help than we probably know at this point.
Sorry if any of this was a little incoherent. I'm still pretty loopy from the whole nightmare. I'm tellin' you....the stories I have, most would probably not believe....
Again, please donate.

Actually, it's because we have an incompetent Republican as president. No other President, Republican or Democrat would have botched this like this one has.

Oh God, not him again. I thought we got rid of him when Bush got elected a second time. I guess he didn't realize we don't care what he thinks.

Good message, except for the global-warming diatribe. Global warming has no basis in scientific fact.

Yeah, I suppose there were never any category 5 hurricanes on this planet before now.

Global warming is a myth, sir. There is no scientific basis for it. Neither is the link between global warming and bad weather true. You've watched "The Day after tomorrow" too many times.

You have a keen scientific mind.

you are joking right, there is no science that says that is definitely what is happening, but there is plenty of evidence, I dont get people who seem to want to believe this is a myth, despite the evidence
"The Day after tomorrow" is an exaggeration of what could happen, it would never happen that fast or that dramatically, but there is evidence that the continuing melting of the polar caps could affect the world climate, leading to drought in europe and extreme weather in general
to not want to spend the money or to make poltical treaties based on the available information is one thing, but to say it is a myth is just ignorant and in most cases politically motivated (I have no idea what your politics are so I wont make that assumption)

I'm not claiming New Orleans is the result of Global Warming, I am just saying it is idiotic to blindly say that global warming is a myth, it is not on the same level as square clouds

I thought Sean Penn was moving to France?
Sean Penn's rescue bid sinks (http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,16494464%5E1702,00.html)
From correspondents in New Orleans
05sep05
EFFORTS by Hollywood actor Sean Penn to aid New Orleans victims stranded by Hurricane Katrina foundered badly overnight, when the boat he was piloting to launch a rescue attempt sprang a leak.
Penn had planned to rescue children waylaid by Katrina's flood waters, but apparently forgot to plug a hole in the bottom of the vessel, which began taking water within seconds of its launch.
The actor, known for his political activism, was seen wearing what appeared to be a white flak jacket and frantically bailing water out of the sinking vessel with a red plastic cup.
<img src="http://network.news.com.au/image/0,10114,5044250,00.jpg" alt=" - " />
When the boat's motor failed to start, those aboard were forced to use paddles to propel themselves down the flooded New Orleans street.
Asked what he had hoped to achieve in the waterlogged city, the actor replied: "Whatever I can do to help."
With the boat loaded with members of Penn's entourage, including a personal photographer, one bystander taunted the actor: "How are you going to get any people in that thing?"

Actually, it's because we have an incompetent Republican as president. No other President, Republican or Democrat would have botched this like this one has.
Actually, it's because a lot of people in power didn't bother to plan ahead and because of the last minute actions of a few od our "leaders". I can't out it all on Bush but his actions in this tragedy haven't helped him gain any points in my book.

The Wal-Mart store in uptown New Orleans, built within the last year, survived the storm but was destroyed by looters.
"They took everything â?? all the electronics, the food, the bikes," said John Stonaker, a Wal-Mart security officer. "People left their old clothes on the floor when they took new ones. The only thing left are the country-and-western CDs. You can still get a Shania Twain album."
